Unit 2: Cells and Human Body Systems Portfolio Reflection

In this unit, we chose an essential question to answer, I chose to answer the one about illnesses: What happens inside our bodies when we get sick? I learned in the unit that a system is made up of subsystems made up of different subsystems made up of cells. The EQ was supposed to be a guiding question to prove that the claim is true. In my project, I chose to research PKD (polycystic kidney disease), mostly on the different interactions between different body systems. I also learned about a different cell organelle in this process. Earlier in the unit, we did answer the claim but I was sort of struggling with that.

I believe that the self-directed notes (Human Body and Cell Notes) helped me the most in my learning process. I am more of a hands on learner but doing research and writing down facts help me remember better. I found the research notes very helpful even though I am less of a “writer”.

The edible cell model also helped me familiarize the different cell parts, which helped me prepare for the final project. This activity directly helped me visualize my cell model.

I believe that I can improve on is my CER writing. My reasoning is often week and somewhat repeats the evidence. What I can do is checking my writing before submitting, spotting any errors.

Math Unit 3 Proportionality and Percentages

Summary Sheet

We made a summary sheet to document everything we learned in this unit including key concepts, vocabulary, and formulas.

UNIT Reflection

  • U: What do you understand in this unit?

After this unit, I fully understand how to calculate percentage, tax, and tip. I also understand what the subtotal is, along with many other vocabulary words. I now know that the tax is based off of the subtotal (the total cost of the items on their own) and then adds to it to create the total.

  • N: What new information did you learn in this unit?

In this unit, I learned many new vocabulary words and what they mean, such as subtotal, interest, and sales tax. I also learned how to calculate them using the percent equation, which also helped me clearly show my work when asked to.

  • I: What was interesting in this unit?

The final project, creating a presentation about a certain topic which has to do with percentages, was very fun. I loved exploring and comparing different values but moreover, I love the creative process of putting together a presentation.

  • T: What was tricky for you in this unit?

I often found myself miscalculating values which resulted in the final answer to be incorrect. I often also misread the question/scenario, ignoring important details such as the number of people/servings.

Health Unit 3 D.E.C.I.D.E Model Reflection

In this unit each group was assigned a different scenario and we were supposed to analyze the case with the D.E.C.I.D.E model and present it.

What we choose to do was to create a script along with the actual poster. Our scenario was about nicotine pouches. We researched the short and long term effects of the product.

We summarized the information from our research and based our model on it. The script we made was completely based off of our model, which talked about different steps to make a decision.

Math Unit 2 Proportions and Scale Drawings Reflection

Summary Sheet

We made a summary sheet to document everything we learned in this unit including key concepts, vocabulary, and formulas.

UNIT Reflection

  • U: What do you understand in this unit?

From this unit, I learned how to find scaled copies of different figures by using the scale factor. I learned how to determine the scale factor, lengths and area of the original/scale copy, and the transformations of angles throughout the process. I learned how to determine if two figures are scaled copies of each other.

  • N: What new information did you learn in this unit?

In this unit, I learned that for two figures to be scaled copies, their side lengths need to be proportional to one another, linking back to the first unit. I also learned how to find the area of a scaled copy which I didn’t know how to in the past, you do it by squaring the scale factor and multiplying the original area by it.

  • I: What was interesting in this unit?

I found it interesting finding the approximate lengths of real-life objects/landmarks. Though finding the distance was complicated and difficult, I found it interesting to find a more efficient way to get legths rather than to actually measure the distance. During this process, I also learned about the scale at the bottom of the map, converting the scaled lengths to real life measurements.

  • T: What was tricky for you in this unit?

I often found myself miscalculating values and matching the wrong sides of scaled figures, this led to the incorrect scale factors. I also, quite often, misread questions which lead to my answers being incorrect.

PE Unit 2 and 3 Reflection

Swimming 🏊‍♀️

In this unit, we learned how to do certain skills related to artistic swimming. We learned skills such as floating and underwater formations. As a summative project, we organized an artistic swimming routine and performed it to the class.

Soccer ⚽️

In this unit, we played games of soccer with other students. We learned how to dribble, pass, and scor goals.

Health Unit 2 Reflection

I used to think that people on all websites with a ‘Dr.’ in front of their name are professionals since doctors are usually very credible and trustworthy. As many people on social media claim to be doctors but have no qualifications, they spread misinformation to many people who instantly believe what they are saying only based on their profile.

Now I think that I should only believe people with proper qualifications or provide fact-based information that is proven to be true. In health class, we learned how to figure out if an influencer’s claim is valid by using the CRAAP test-Currency, Relevance, Authority, Accuracy, Purpose- which helped me check many misleading health claims in videos.

During class, we filled out some CRAAP test evaluation sheets to practice identifying true and false health claims that were made in influencer videos such as the cayenne pepper with cinnamon sprinkled on oranges will help with constipation, which was proven to be false.

This was our presentation which we talked about Ashton Hall’s face icing routine.

We received feedback on our presentation and it seems like we proved our point really well.

Math U1 Reflection

In this unit, we studied proportions, we created summary sheets to show our learning in this unit.

  • U: What do you understand in this unit?
    • From this unit, we learned that to be proportional, the numbers need to have the same ratio (simplify to the same ratio). This is like equivalent fractions, in fact, ratio’s can be represented as fractions. The main idea is that if one value increases/decreases (multiply/divide), the other value has to change the same way.
  • N: What new information did you learn in this unit?
    • In this unit, we learned about the CoP (Constant of Proportionality), which is basically the value that you need to multiply/divide a number to get the other in the ratio. We also recalled to what “unit rate” was, which was covered in 6th grade. Unit rate is the number of one part of the ratio when the other equals to 0. Finding the unit rate is also finding the CoP, since they are always the same number.
  • I: What was interesting in this unit?
    • I loved the final project and finding the best value of items using the unit rate and CoP. Though the great amount of calculations and comparing was a bit frustrating, I still enjoyed setting up my party. I believe that this is a life skill that is mandatory for life to bargian for things and determine what the better item to buy is, which was similar to the final project.
  • T: What was tricky for you in this unit?
    • I found it difficult sometimes to read a graph and find out what the CoP is. This is because not all graphs (especially on the summative) show the y value of when x is 1, so you need to find the unit rate by dividing two points on the graph. I often misread the graph, causing errors inthe final answer.

Social Studies Unit 1: Media Presentation

Agnes Yu Gold C2 Media Presentation .MOV

1. What are some pieces of feedback that you received and then incorporated into your work?

Even though most of my feedback was to finish my work, I incorporated the ways to help the children in poverty into my script and then my video. I did this by telling the audience that they can donate to Gloria’s crowdfunding campaign in order to help the people.

2. Explain 1 thing that you are proud of from this unit.

I am proud of me finishing the project before the timeline and that I could use Magic School to assist my learning and revise my work. Since I don’t have decent time managing skills, being able to finish writing the script and video in time is a huge achievment.

3. Explain 1 thing that you want to keep working on.

I could’ve worked on the video editing and use more effects/transitions to make a more interesting video. This is because my original video had a very small amount of graphics/effects which makes the video less interesting.

4. In your own words, explain what Bias is.

I believe that bias is something that you believe that shapes your perspective, allowing you to side towards a side in a situation. Bias is something that is shaped overtime and you can have a different bias at different times.

5. Explain 1 positive outcome of people having the same perspective might be.

In this situation, everyone will be able to understand each other and conflicts will be reduced since everyone has the same stance on everything.

6. Explain 1 negative outcome of people having the same perspective might be.

In a world like this, there will not be any opposing opinions and even though there won’t be any conflicts because of this. A world like this may be boring and decisions may be made only based on one point of view, ignoring the potential risks.

Health Master Chef – BeiLiYa Frozen Yogurt Granola Cup👩‍🍳

Unit 1 Core Concepts 👀

A core concepts that was covered in this unit was how to eat with a healthy and balanced diet. We also learned about the macro- and micronutrients in foods and how they can benefit.

Application of Learning 💭

We applied our knowledge of nutrients and a balanced meal to create a healthy snack that benifets the human body by providing many different nutrients in the snack. Our group made a frozen yogurt granola cup which contains fiber and healthy fats.

Ethical Global Citizenship 🌏

My current diet is quite healthy and balanced, however, it may not be the miost sustainable. My protein mainly comes from fish, pigs, and cows (who produce a lot of greeen house gasses when they fart) and I also eat lots of vegetables. Usually in the afternoons, I get a snack for myself. These snack sometimes are dairy products which comes from cows.

Habits and Goal Setting 🥅

In the future, I want to achieve the goal of eating at least 2 kinds of green vegetables each meal (not including snacks). In this unit, we studied the balance of nutrients using the Harvard Healthy Plate and on the web page, it was recommended that you should have intakes of food from all the colours of the rainbow. However, I want to start with a smaller goal so I will start with eating green vegetables first and then inch forward. I chose to set this goal because I often find myself eating unhealthy snacks a lot which becomes a habit since i’m often hungry so I need to eat the leafy greens to balance the intakes of the unnessecary carbs.
