Dystopian Fiction-The Giver

What Did I Do?

In this unit I learned about dystopian fiction by writing academic paragraphs and discussing topics related to the book: The Giver

We learned about building vocabulary, writing academic paragraphs, using transition words, and doing collaborative discussions.

What Worked?

Something that worked or I learned well was that I collaborated actively with my peers during collaborative discussions, I often talked and discussed actively with my peers and led the discussion when we ran out of things to discuss. I also got good grades on the vocabulary tests and I learned many new words.

What did not work?

Something that didn’t go well or I could improve on is that I could use even more transition words and more advanced vocabulary. When we had summaries and answered questions on the story, I could use some more transition words and use the vocab words that I learned more often.

Personal Relevance

By reading The Giver, I understood that there are many ways that a country could mistreat its people, and I also realized that we should be grateful that we live in a place where mistakes could be accepted, and we have the freedom and right to decide what we wear and our appearance. And we do not have such cruelty in our community. I also understood that not all books are where the story ends happily and the setting is amazing or fine.

The Crazy Comic Creation Activity and Unit 1 Online Safety

Safety Behaviors

Some safety behaviors that are important for me are to never open any unknown link on the internet, never do something that a stranger asks me to do, and also share the things that I see on the internet.

Trusted People

My 5 trusted people are my mom, my dad, my little brother, my health teacher and my Advisory teacher

Social media impacts

In my opinion, social media impacts the teens the most in mental health and self image. This is because on social media, people always tell you the good side of them so you think that a lot of people are greater than you. Also, you might recieve bad comments on the videos you share about yourself.

Safety Strategies

Some safety strategies that could keep me safe are to report any online harms that could be dangerous to your trusted people, never sharing any personal information, wearing a helmet every time you ride a bike or scooter, knowing your mom or dad’s phone number, and blocking people who harm you on the internet.

Biggest takeaway

My biggest takeaway from this unit is that we need to be careful online and in social media.

Unit 2-Otzi unit reflection

What did I work on?

In this unit, we worked on 3 main activities. The first one is Observations, Inferences and Wonderings. In this activity, we looked at some photos, and we first made some observations on the photos, and then we made an inference based on the observations and made some wonders or questions. The second one is CER writing, in which we wrote a paragraph and gave a claim, evidence, and reasoning. Lastly, we learned and answered open and closed questions, in prep for the Otzi mock trail.

What did I learn?

We learned about the essential question, why should we care about the past? We found the answer to it by learning about Otzi the iceman, which is a prehistoric man carrying loads of tools and clothing on him, and contained many pieces of evidence that could let us understand the past more. We used these pieces of evidence on him to argue whether Otzi was murdered. And at last, we answered the essential question of the unit.

What worked well?

Something that worked well for me was that I did a great job learning about Otzi the Iceman and his history and the discoveries made on him. In this unit, we studied articles and images of Otzi, and made inferences, wonderings, and conclusions based on the information. At last, we did a mock trial on whether Otzi was murdered, and I worked hard to prepare evidence and possible questions to be asked by the lawyers to use in the trial.

What did not work?

Something that didn’t work was that I was very nervous in the mock trial, and I think that that made me do less than I expected myself to do in the trial. For instance, in the mock trial, I was very nervous since it is not often for me to be in front of a lot of people and not memorize the things to talk about. When the lawyers asked me questions, I had some difficulties trying to answer the questions. If I could improve, I would try to be more prepared for the lawyer’s questions so I would not be so nervous and also practice more.

Personal Relevance

In this unit, a large thing that we practiced was communication and collaboration. To prepare for the Otzi mock trial, I was paired up with a partner to gather evidence to answer questions. We often had to communicate to each other and tell others our ideas. We also had to pay attention to others when they are sharing their thoughts. These skills could help us in the future when working with others in work.

Math Tasty Profits Project

What did we do?

In this project, students have to prepare for a bake sale, we first decided what we wanted to bake and sell to the customers. We then listed the quantities and price of the ingredients. Next, we did the price calculations, such as the markup and percentages. Lastly, we baked the products and sold them. We recorded the income and calculated the profit.

What did we learn?

From this project, we learned about how to quickly find and calculate prices and incomes. We learned about percentages and used them to create the prices for our cookies. We also used double line graphs and models, we also used fractions.

What worked?

Something that worked well was that we successfully calculated the prices and incomes correctly, and we also made a lot of profit in the bake sale. Our work was neat and organized.

What didn’t work?

Something that didn’t go so well was that I sometimes had different opinions with my partner, we argued sometimes, I could improve by coming up with ideas that could respect both people’s opinions. Also, we did have some errors in calculating, which we fixed later.

Personal relevance

From this project, we learned a lot about economy, like income, prices, markup, etc. These skills could all help us in the future by letting us have more experience about how you calculate your prices in your business in the future.

Egg Car Challenge

What did I do?

In this activity, we have to build an egg car and drive it down a ramp and try to make the egg not crack. We could only use paper, tape, and wheels to build the car in about 30 minutes. The car can’t be too long or wide.

What did I learn?

In the challenge, we learned about Newton’s 3 laws. To prevent Newton’s 1st law from making the egg fly out of the car when it hits the block, we designed a seatbelt. To prevent Newton’s 3rd law from making the egg crack, we designed a zone on the car where it would reduce the force put on the egg.

What worked?

Something that worked well with our design is that the car did not get stuck on the track like some others did. This is because we made sure that the car goes straightforward by adjusting the wheels.

What didn’t work?

Something that we would like to improve about our car design is the crumple zone, or the zone that reduces the force put on the car. Our crumple zone was not hard enough, which made the egg crack, we would design a stronger crumple zone next time.

Personal Relevance

Currently, I know that in the real world, cars and trucks also have safety systems, such as distance detectors, airbags, and seatbelts. These systems all guarantee our safety during crashes, and our challenge relates to the real life because we also designed safety systems to prevent Newton’s laws cracking the egg.

Design Technology Trimester

In the laser cutting unit , we used a software called Inkscape to design either a coaster, earrings, or fridge magnet. We first chose the client that we will design a product for. We then emphasized the requirements for the design. We used the software to design shapes and pictures to be laser cut on plywood. We then made the product and asked our client for feedback and asked them for improvements.

In the 3D modeling unit, we formed different groups of about 8 people, we then designed 3D chess pieces using an webpage called Tinkecad. We first came up with a design for our chess pieces, and then we used the website to make the design. We then print the designs using 3D printers. We used the pieces to play chess at last.

Creative Writing Reflection

In this creative writing we are writing a fictional story based on a theme that matters to me.

We learned:

Theme (my purpose for writing this story, my message to readers)

Character Development (creating believable characters with positive & negative traits)

Plot (the sequence of events in my story; Western and Eastern approaches to storytelling)

Setting (the world that I create for my story)

What’s working?

I enjoyed writing the heading of the story, where I provided deep visualization of the story. I came up with the story idea by thinking that I wanted to write about something from the medieval times. My favorite sentence was when I provided the deep visualisation of the kingdom Eruptus .

Areas of growth

The climax was the hardest part, I needed to make it thrilling and interesting for the reader. I solved it by brainstorming ideas of exciting scenes that could happen. My least favorite part is the ending because I didn’t have enough time to finish my story completely.

Creative Writing helps us express our thoughts in real life, and also lets us use our imagination to create imaginary worlds. I enjoy creative writing because it is fun to be creative and imagine and create worlds and dimensions however we want.

Balloon Car Activity

The Balloon Car was built using cardboard, wheels, a balloon, and some tape. We used it to learn about Newton’s 1st, 2nd, and 3rd laws, and also learned other concepts about forces.

What did I learn?

Newton’s 1st law says that an object at rest tends to stay at rest, while an object at motion tends to stay in motion , unless acted upon by an unbalanced force. We see this law in action with the balloon car when the car stayed at rest while at rest. Newton’s 2nd law says that more force is needed to accelerate a heavier object. We saw this law in action with the balloon car when the car went faster as we put more force on the car. Newton’s 3rd law says that every action force has an equal and opposite reaction force. We saw this on the Balloon Car when the air released from the car made the car go forward.

What worked?

The Balloon Car’s ability to drive fast worked well because it had a good design and I collaborated with my partner effectively. We had to race our car with the others, and we won some races.

What didn’t work?

It was a struggle when lost some of the races, but we still learned many concepts from using the balloon car. We also solved the problem when we improved and changed the design of our car, which made the car go faster.

Personal Relevance

The Balloon Car was like rockets in real world, when I used the balloon to push the car, it was like flames being pushed out of the rocket as the rocket went upward. I see Newton’s 2nd law in real life, when I needed to push a door harder as the door was heavier. It is important to know these laws because it helps us improve safety features of cars and rollercoasters, and it also helps us give a good design of many things that move. It also explains many things we encounter in real life.

Science Critical Thinking Activity Reflection

What did I do?

In this lesson, I used my critical thinking skills to work with my teammates to solve different Indi car challenges. In the next half of the lesson, I used my critical thinking skills again to build a Gravitrax marble track. I worked with my teammates to create a track that the marble can go on and doesn’t fall out.

What did I learn?

In this lesson, I learned how to use my critical thinking skills to solve different kinds of problems. In the Indi car challenge, I figured with my teammates about the directions of each colored card. In the marble track, I fixed the track with my teammates whenever the marble rolled out of the track.

What worked?

Something that worked was that our team managed to make good use of our critical thinking skills on figuring out the directions of the cards, we also quickly overcome each challenge. In Gravitrax, we managed to solve all the problems on the track and the track worked at last.

What did not work?

Something that I can improve on is that I can collaborate more with my teammates and stay more on task. During the Indi car challenge, our group sometimes played with the Indi car without using the challenge tracks before we were supposed to.

In this lesson, I strengthened my critical thinking skills by doing team challenges, this would help me in the future by making me able to solve problems and challenges by my own.
