Dystopian Fiction-The Giver

What did I do?

I learned about dystopian fiction by writing academic paragraphs and disscussing topics related to the book ‘The Giver’.

What did I learn?

I built my vocabulary by learnings vocabulary words and taking tests. I also had discussions in groups to help me understand more about the book.

What worked?

When we discussed about the book and found many dystopian fiction characteristics.

What did not work?

I wasn’t that focused in class

Personal Relevance

Sometimes I can use these methods to learn words.

Math Baking Project

What did we do?

We made snowflake crisps using math. First, we decided on what we are making and buying, and got the recipe with the price online. Second, we add up the price of each ingredient and divided the price with the number of servings and got the price per serving. Then, we marked up the price by 100% and rounded it to a whole number to get the final price. Last, we made the snowflake crisps and sold all of them.

What did we learn?

We learned how to mark up the price by X%, and how to change the cups to grams. We used a graph for the changing, for example, 1/2cups=2.5grams for calculating. We also learned how to round different prices to different numbers.

What worked?

I am proud of promoting our baked goods to people and proud of doing the calculations. Our change of unit also worked very well and we got a lot of profit. We are all proud of working together calculating precisely.

What did not work?

During work time, we were working a bit slower than other people. If I were to do this unit again, I would be more focused and would be working faster to make more progress.

Personal Relevance

This unit helped me learn about how to calculate many things for a sell. If I were to sell things in the future, I would use those skills to help me. For example, now I know how to calculate a profit and can do it in the future.

Egg Car Challenge

IMG_0252.mov

What did I do?

The criteria of the egg car is: Width has to be shorter that 6.5cm, length has to be shorter that 16.5cm, can only use 1m of tape and 3 pieces of paper.

What did I learn?

I learned that newton’s first law is seen when the egg car bumps onto the wall, because that an object at rest stays at rest, an object in motion remains in motion, unless acted on by an outside force. I also saw how newton’s third law worked when the egg cracks, because that what goes up, must come down, same with the egg cause it is pushing to the wall and the wall is pushing out. Lastly, newtons second law states that the greater the mass of an object, the more force needed to accelerate it, and that shows how a fake egg works well, but the real egg cracks/flys out.

What worked?

The seat belt we made prevented the egg from flying out. Also, we made the crumple longer so that the egg wouldn’t crack.

What did not work?

I noticed that the two holes we made for the wheels had friction with the egg and made the egg crack. Next time we can put the wheels on the car, instead of in the hole.

Personal Relevance

Now I know that it is important to put on seatbelts, because that you may fly out during an accident according to newton’s first law. I also know that in the future, cars can make longer crumple zones so that people in the car won’t get smashed according to newton’s third law. Since now I know the three laws, I would tell more people in the future to put on seatbelts and watch out for accidents.

Science

What did I do?

The balloon cart was built using a balloon, a plate, some bottle caps, and some straws. We used it to learn about how Newton’s 2nd law worked. After we built the balloon cart, we added washers and measured how far the cart went with the same amount of air. After this experiment, we learned that the greater the mass of an object, the more force needed to accelerate it, and that is how we learned the newton’s second law.

What did I learn?

Newton’s first law says that an object at rest stays at rest, and an object moving remains moving, unless acted on by an outside force. We saw this law in action with the balloon cart when it did not move, and remained at rest, unless the air in the balloon is released. Newton’d second law says that the greater the mass of an object, the more force needed to accelerate it. We saw this law in action with the balloon cart when it had more washers, the distance the cart drove was less that it had less washers when given the same amount of air.

What worked?

The car design worked well because that I shared my ideas with my partner and she shared hers with me. We both added more and more designs to the car when there is a problem. We had to test it again and again so that it is the best version.

What did not work?

It was a struggle when identifying the laws for the car. To solve this problem, me and my partner thought about the definition of the three laws and see which one conforms to the car. We also tested the car many times to identify the laws.

Personal Relevance

The balloon car is like an airplane in real world, when the balloon car’s air gives force to let the car move and how airplanes are the same. I see newton’s 3rd law in life when I throw the volleyball up high in the air. “What goes up must come down” perfectly describes the ball being thrown up in the air and bumping to the ground. It is important to know these laws because that it can help us avoid many accidents in life.

Art Reflection

I am proud of making my plaster cake. It is a cute cake that I made with plaster. I smoothed the surface of the cake with my hand. I also used acrylic paint to color it. I am proud of this artwork because that it is cute and nice.

Science

What did I do?

I used my critical thinking skills to complete challenges with Indi robot cars and build rollercoasters with Gravitrax.

What did I learn?

I learned about how I would be graded for Critical Thinking. Critical thinking is my ability to solve problems and make the right decisions.

What worked?

I thought critically when I problem solved to figure out which color has different fiture.

What did not work?

I struggled when focusing in class.

Personal Relevance

Today’s learning will help me use my Critical thinking in life to solve many problems.

Unit 1 – Campaign for the Olympics Reflection

What did I work on?

During the Campaign for the Olympics unit, I worked on writing a script and creating a presentation about why Los Angeles should be the host city for the summer Olympics, 2032. While presenting, I made eye contact and spoke with a loud and confident voice. Me and my partner added more details to our presentation when we thought something was missing.

What did I learn?

I learned that Olympics was originally created to honor the god Zeus. I also learned how to make a presentation more effective. We learned how to use AI effectively and learnt how to make a logo using AI (although it was very difficult).

What worked?

I found that working with a partner is more efficient. We can share many PPTs and make it easier and faster. I improved my eye contact and voice while practicing my presentation with my partner.

What did not work?

I found that I had many filler words like: and….. yeah, uh, um, ok….eh, etc. If I were to improve my presentation, I would take out my filler words and would be more confident. Next time, I will practice more and improve my sentences to take out my filler words.

Personal Relevance

The collaboration and communication skills I practiced during this unit for the future is that I learned how to communicate with my partner effectively. At first, we weren’t communicating effectively, but I found out soon and changed our way of communicating. I also learned how to speak loudly, and this would help me present my work later on in the future.

What are we doing? I wrote a paragraph analyzing a character’s trait in my book.

What are we learning? We are learning how to analyze a character’s trait in a single paragraph.

What’s working? I understand how to write a paragraph analyzing a character’s trait in my book

What’s not working? Nothing.

PE Ping Pong Reflection

I learned how to do serve, fore hand shot and back hand shot.

I improved on the fore hand shot and can beat my opponent with it.

It was really fun when we were playing the King and Queen of the Quarts.

Some challenges I faced was doing the back hand shot. It was really hard.

I am looking forward to table tennis next year, because that it is really fun and I can improve my skills.

I wish that I can do better in my back hand shot.

I am proud of my fore hand shot and serve.

What are we doing?

Language Arts-personal narrative, identity wheel

Advisory-personality test, Venn diagram, Thursday morning collaborative challenges

What are we learning?

We are starting to focus on the personality traits that make us who we are. We are trying to understand ourselves better.

What’s working?
