Reflections

Extra Curricular Activities

One of the extra curricular activities I am working on right now is MEC, which is a business competition for high school students. We just started working on our project, and have an idea of what we want to do to make an impact on the society. Working with three other teammates for this competition, it requires us to collaborate effectively and think critically. We need to consider various aspects in the planning process, including what we want to include in our project, our goal, how to make money, etc. To do that, my teammates and I need to collaborate with each other and come up with different ideas. We take different roles while working on the PPT and organizing work. I really look forward to our final product and prototype.

Science Project Reflection

We recently just started a science project, to create a drag race car. I don’t really know my teammate really well, but I think our strengths and weaknesses are pretty different, so we’ll be able to collaborate effectively. We just started on the project, so we only started brainstorming, but everything is going pretty smoothly right now. I think one of our challenges right now is that we only have a few ideas as it is our first time doing something similar. However, I think with collaborating effectively and constantly sharing ideas, we will be able to come up with a good design.

TTG- Critical Thinker

Task 14: Survival Game 30pts

Task 15: Gomuku Game 30pts

Task 4: Altruism in Media 15pts

Overall Reflection:

I think critical thinking is one of the hardest TTG apprenticeship tasks to complete. While completing those tasks, I really had to think hard and think from different perspectives. Something that was really challenging and fun was the Survival Game. I did this with a partner, and it was really challenging because we really need to think about what we need under extreme circumstances. Us, being very privileged right now living a life where we have access to a lot of things, really need to think about what will happen if we were just trying to survive and what is a need and what is a want. In addition, for the Altruism in Media task, The Kendall Jenner Pepsi ad was criticized for trivializing serious social justice issues which led to the resign of the whole team. In contrast, Zappos’ Zappos for Good initiative is viewed as an effort to engage with communities and promote social responsibility, and there was no similar criticism. Lastly, these critical thinking skills will help me in other subjects because I will know how to think rom different perspectives and possibly analyze something with a different view.

TTG- Effective Collaborator

Task 2: Zoom In Puzzle15pts

Task 5: Reading with ES 15pts

Task 9: Create a training plan 60pts

Overall Reflection: I completed three tasks for the TTG, effective collaborator. The first task was a Zoom In Puzzle, where each person in the class had a different piece of an artwork that was extremely zoomed it. This really challenged our collaboration skills because we had to sort out the order and put the pieces together through working with each other and communicating so we successfully complete it. The second task I completed was going to the ES library and reading to Kindergarten kids. This task was fun and challenging. It was fun because I got to spend time with kids, but the challenging part was that i had to talk with little kids in the language they can understand and work with them in a way they will have fun an understand. The last task I completed for this TTG was to create a training plan. This was the hardest one because I really had to think about what makes a good training plan. I planned a swim training for myself that would improve my endurance. Overall, I think my collaboration skills were developed through completing these tasks which can also help me in other subjects academically as well as use collaboration skills in my social life.

TTG – Skillful Communicator

Task 9: Create a Social Media Post 15 points

I was a skillful communicator when I posted something related to recent Swim Meet at Beijing on social media. This developed my communication skills because I had to be aware of what I was posting. My color choices were blue because it seems like it was related to water and I also used different perspectives from what I saw including selfies, the pool and the champion trophy.

Task 3: Speed Debate 15 points

We speed debated on the topic of whether left-hand scissors should be mandatory in all classes. I was the proposition side and said they should, because we should prepare a learning environment that accommodates all people that want to learn in different ways and have different ways of doing things.

Task 2: Debate 60 points

I did a debate with someone else and used the Lincoln Douglas debate format. Some takeaways are:

  1. I got to learn about what the Lincoln Douglas debate format was.
  2. Even though you can do research prior to starting, a lot of improvisation and having a clear logic is very importnat.
  3. Within the short amount of time, you might need to form an argument that you don’t believe is correct but still fight for it.

Task 4: Presentation 60 pts

I made a presentation for MUN on my committee. My committee had 35 people and I typed up amendments so everyone was able to see them.

TTG- Resilient Tasks

Task 8- Mindful Coloring 15 points

I was practicing the skill, Resilient, through Mindful Colourings. Coloring the sheets, it feels very satisfying and fun. Even though there were times where I didn’t want to work on it, I still finished the drawing at the end, which was a way of practicing resilient skills. This TTG helped me to take some time out of school work and other work and just focus on something that is relaxing for me

Task 6- Mindfulness Eating No.1 15 points

I did this task when we were outside in the courtyard. I got a sushi and corn chips from the HS Commons. Some of the ingredients include rice, seaweed, tuna, corn, and oil. I think these ingredients are from the farm, as well as from the sea. However, after it is processed and remade, it is not certain whether or not the ingredients were fresh and the origin.

Task 14- Vision Board 60 pts

I created one page that shows my friends, where I’m from, my hobbies, goals, and a quote. I’m not able to show a picture because there are too many parts that show faces.

Task #11- Personal Goal 30 pts

I practice the piano daily for 2 hours each day, usually after I get home from school or other activities. I am currently practicing a piece by Bach, Toccata No. 5 in E minor.

Task #12- Act of kindness 30 pts

I am part of a group called Xiaohusai. During the International Fair, I helped with selling the tea from the Xiaohusai village to SAS parents and students. The money went to helping the kids at the village in Yunan with education without going through another charity that earns part of the money.

TTG- Creative Learner Tasks

Task 3 – Sci-fi story 60 Points

I chose to do task 3 and wrote a short science-fiction story because I really enjoy writing. The story is about a girl who went through a magical door into another world. I think it was pretty successful because I could continue writing the whole time and because I wrote things like this before. One thing that was challenging was coming up with the plot. Overall, it was pretty fun.

Task 10 – Bake-off 60 points

During the weekend, I did a bake off with a few of my friends. We did cupcakes and used icing to draw different cute drawings. Some of the ingredients used were flour, sugar, and milk. Though I don’t have a picture because I couldn’t use my phone with flour all over me, it was a very fun and rewarding experience as it was the first time my friends and I met after I moved to Shanghai.

Task 6- Plan event 30 pts

Over the summer, I helped my previous school and their MUN program plan an MUN conference that occurred in November. I was mainly in charge of emailing schools and building the website. The event ended very successfully.

In What Ways Was I…

I was a creative thinker when I wrote a short Science-Fiction story. Writing the story pushed me to really think creatively about what can happen in a fantasy world. For example, I used things like a magic door that led to another world in my Science-Fiction story. This really encouraged me to think out of restrictions. This TTG also helped me in other classes such as English because we had to think creatively to create a documentary which really required me to use a lot of the skills and combine them.

I was an effective collaborator when we did the Zoom In card activity. It required me to talk to other people and work with them in order to solve the puzzle. This TTG helped me outside of Learning Lab because it helped me learn more about how to effectively collaborate with other people and what to do when working with classmates.

I was practicing the skill, Resilient, through Mindful Colourings. Coloring the sheets, it feels very satisfying and fun. Even though there were times where I didn’t want to work on it, I still finished the sheet at the end, which was a way of practicing resilient skills.

I was a skillful communicator when I posted something related to recent Swim Meet at Beijing on social media. This developed my communication skills because I had to be aware of what I was posting.

I didn’t do a critical thinker task yet, and I will work on one this week. I think the TTG really helped me develop skills that are not only beneficial when completing the task, but also in other classes and even outside of school.

Zoom-in Zoom-in 🔎

Task #4 15 Points

In today’s Learning Lab lesson, we went outside to the Art Courtyard and did a fun activity. Each person had a card with an image on it, and without showing anyone, we had to line up in order from the biggest, to zooming in to the most detailed part. The TTGs, Communication and Collaboration, was practiced in this activity because we had to talk to other people and also listen to their descriptions in order to complete the task. I think our class was pretty successful in this activity because we talked to each other and we were able to effectively communicate. Something we could have done better was using better words to describe the image on our card because there were times where I didn’t understand what the other person was talking about.

Using AI Responsibly🎯

One goal when using AI is to integrate AI tools into the creative process as a complementary resource while developing and maintaining my distinct artistic voice and vision. Even though I can use my own thinking and creativity, in today’s world where AI is developing rapidly, we can see that AI can do anything you ask them to do. When I ask AI to do something, it does it immediately with a lot of detail. If I ask AI first before thinking about my own ideas, it would be hard to maintain my own vision. In addition, when AI provides you with a stance or opinion on a topic and you read it, you might agree even though you previously had an opinion on the other side. Therefore, this would be a barrier when achieving my AI-related goal. To mitigate this challenge, I will form my own ideas first before asking AI. Even when I am using AI to help me with my work, I would ask for an outline or some ideas rather than having it do all the work. I want to achieve my goal by my next big project and will track my progress my noting what ideas are mine and what are AI generated.

Digital Citizenship

One of the takeaways for this lesson is: We should be responsible for the content you post and aware of the impact it can make on others. When performing the skit, we performed a scenario where one person makes misleading edits in a video and made other people sad😭💔 Therefore, when we are posting any content on social media, we should be aware of how other people feel when they see the content. Before posting, we should check if any content violates anyone else’s privacy or would make them feel hurt.
