Badminton Unit Reflection

I learned about the different types of serves and clear shot. I also learnt ways to hold your racket. I had played it before but I hadn’t played it very seriously. I think this was very fun and interesting to learn and I was able to understand what kind of level I was on compared to my classmates. I was also able to improve on top of what I know.

Unit 4 Dystopian Fiction Reflection

WHAT DID I LEARN ABOUT DYSTOPIAN FICTION?
I learnt about how dystopian fiction books connect to real life and societies dystopian fiction books take place in are usually totalitarian societies.
I learnt that totalitarian governments controls every aspect of life with fear but still making the community have an illusion of utopia.

HOW DOES DYSTOPIAN FICTION INVITE ME TO THINK ABOUT REAL LIFE?
Dystopian fictions stories make me think because every time I think something is so weird and unsettling, I think about how that benefits the society. For example I thought of Birthmothers. The way Birthmothers are “used” in Jonas’s community was so creepy, but when I thought about it a little more I realized that with Birthmothers there will always be a good level of the Old (which they kill at a certain age) and newchildren which can keep the economy steady.

I ENJOYED THE GIVER BECAUSE…
I thought being able to read about a society so different from mine was so interesting and the story was engaging with chapters ending with cliffhangers.

HOW HAVE I IMPROVED MY ABILITY TO WRITE ACADEMIC PARAGRAPH?
I was able to naturally write academic paragraphs by the last Common Lit assignment. I was able to learn which parts of the story would be the most relevant and interesting.

HOW AM I BETTER NOW INTERACTING WITH OTHERS WITH LITERATURE DISCUSSION?
I am better at praising and connecting with others and acknowledging others ideas. I am also better at clarifying others ideas.

Unit 1 Online and In Person Health

I think being safe online is the most important. You don’t know who you are even talking to. In real life you can see who you are talking to, and that may help you be aware of what is happening. On social media people can act like anything or anyone.

Some people I can trust and talk to are my mom, dad, my sister, and my friends.

I think social media and technology affects teens’ sleep the most. The blue light can affect melatonin.

One strategy to protect myself in real life is to wear helmets when I go on a bike to protect my head if I fall.
Another strategy in real life and on the internet is to beware of what is going on around you. Try to think of the situation from someone else’s perspective.
A third strategy online to stay safe is to turn on age restrictions and privacy restrictions to make sure you don’t see anything inappropriate or so that no one can get to your private information.

I was able to learn the most about how blue light affects sleep and learning

Volleyball Reflection

This unit I was able to learn how to serve underhand, bump, and toughen my skin for harder volley balls. In the end I was able to improve my volleyball in general. Before I didn’t know anything about volleyball, and I was able to improve a lot. There were challenges like the hard volley balls hurting my hands and they became very red, and I think I twisted my wrist once, but I still kept going and served. (even though I didn’t succeed) I think I was able to grow in skill and mentally because volleyball isn’t something I’m familiar with.

Unit 2 Ötzi Unit Portfolio Reflection

1. What did I work on?

a. During this unit, ‘Why should we care about the past?’, I worked on

i. Making observations, inferences and wonderings

ii. Using photos and articles as evidence

iii. Writing a CER paragraph

iv. Asking and answering open and closed questions

v. Taking part in the Ötzi Mock Trial, my role was defense lawyer

2. What did I learn? Why should we care about the past?

a. We should care about the past because when we know about what

happened in the past and what kind of lives our ancestors had long before

we were born, we can understand who we are now. We can also learn how

certain languages came to be, how our culture evolved and developed. We

can also learn about the similarities and differences between the past and

right now.

3. What worked well?

a. I am proud of participating in the Ötzi Mock Trial, researching and finding

good evidence, and writing my C.E.R.

b. I am proud of the work above because it was my first time participating in an

Ötzi Mock Trial and writing a C.E.R in Social Studies. It was my first time

researching with a large amount of resources. Although it was my first time

doing all of these and it was hard, I still did it which made me proud.

4. What did not work well?

a. I found some of this work challenging, the Ötzi Mock Trial, writing my C.E.R,

and doing observations, inferences, and questions.

b. I found the work above challenging because I was nervous to talk in front of

many people. It was my first time doing CERs and mock trials, and I couldn’t

really think of anything for the OIQ.

5. Personal Relevance

a. Collaboration and communications skills are important in my future

because I will be using this no matter what job I get. If there are people, then I

will use collaboration and communication.

6. This is a photo of my Ötzi Mock Trial

Math Bakery Reflection

WHAT DID I DO? I found out the best dessert, calculated the costs, and calculated the income and profit after selling them,.

WHAT DID I LEARN? I learnt about income, markup percentages, profit, and dug deeper into rates.

WHAT WORKED? It worked with the price that me and my partner set. We set our price to 15¥ and it was the perfect price. It was a slight bit expensive but people were cooperative to buy it. We changed the amount of servings we made per batch and one serving was worth 6¥ rounded.

WHAT DID NOT WORK? I think we should have made more because we sold out easily and weren’t able to give everyone our dessert.

HOW IS THIS RELEVANT? I was able to have fun and bake while learn about math and I think that is why it is relevant to me.

Soccer Reflection

WHAT DID YOU LEARN?
I was able to learn and practice dribbling. I was able to play games and learn strategies.

WHAT HELPED?
Being able to get advice from my teammates and plan strategies together helped my participation and how well I did.

WHAT IS SOMETHING THAT YOU ARE PROUD OF?
I am proud of how I was able to learn new things in soccer and be an active learner, because before, I didn’t participate a lot in soccer units.

WHAT IS SOMETHING YOU COULD WORK ON?
I could work on my kicking because my kicks were not very accurate and awareness of my surroundings because I wasn’t able to do passes to people who would have been the best for my team.

Egg Car Reflection

WHAT DID I DO? I made an egg car with my team mate, Hayoon, where we used 3 pieces of paper, straws, wheels and axles, and 1 meter of tape.

WHAT DID I LEARN? I learnt about how the Newton’s 3rd and 1st Law applied to our egg car. For Newton’s 1st Law, we made a seatbelt because of the inertia of our egg, our egg tries to keep flying forward, so we used our seatbelt to make sure the egg would stay in place. For Newton’s 3rd Law, we made a crumple zone because the wall would push back at the egg car when the egg car crashed into the wall, we made a crumple zone to absorb the force.

WHAT WORKED? Our crumple zone and “seat” helped our egg stay in our car and not crack. I think the crumple zone was especially useful because it really absorbed all of the force that came upon our egg.

WHAT DID NOT WORK? I think we could improve by making our design stronger and more stable, because although me and Hayoon’s design prevented our egg from cracking, one wheel fell off. By making our design more stable, like using a smooth axle without any dents because a dent in our axle made our wheel be unstable when connected to our axle, could help and improve our design.

PERSONAL RELEVANCE I think that although I wouldn’t build egg cars in the future as an adult or high school/university student, I will use a lot of problem solving skills. Problem solving was one of the biggest parts of this project other than knowing and applying Newton’s 1st and 3rd Law to our designs, like when our car was too wide or too floppy. I think that I was able to problem solve and use my critical thinking skills to make our car the best it can be although it was a bit rushed.
