Apprenticeship Activities Reflection

Creative Learner

While working on my creative learner task, in which I had chosen to ask the question of rewriting a fairytale in modern times, I encountered a block in my motivation. I wasn’t able to find a good fairytale to base a story off of. Each fairy tale I had encountered brought me to stories that were boring at best. And so, I met with a friend named Eric Jiale Song and we decided to do this task together. Eric had decided to write about Cinderella whilst I had chosen Little Red Riding Hood. We wrote together, I didn’t need to know what Eric was writing, just writing with a friend was enough. After finishing his writing, Eric left me, he had wrote only a paragraph’s worth of a story, while I had written a chapter, dialogue and all. After a little while, I had also finished my story and was able to show it to Ms. Harris. This task taught me how to have patience because creativity takes time and I shouldn’t rush things for a grade. Eric went on to lose his story and his 30 minutes of writing.

Critical Thinking

During critical thinking, I personally believe me and my partners in the tasks we did were pathetic at best. The task I would like to talk about though, was the “That’s Outlandish” task. I did it with my friend, Eric, and we decided to try to convince Ms. Harris that Earth was flat. Emphasis on try. Eric and I, with no preparation beforehand, attempted the task. And so we went to Ms. Harris and tried to convince her that the Earth was flat. We gave her 0 evidence and had not prepared an argument other than, it looks flat. From this experience, I learnt that proper preparation prevents poor performance. Because me and Eric didn’t prepare, we ended up improvising.

Resilience

For resilience, I decided to do a mindfulness walk. I first went on a 2 minute stroll outside the learning lab, thinking about what I would write for the activity. Once I came back, Ms. Harris told me to redo the mindfulness walk and take time with it. So then I went back outside and took a real mindfulness walk. I went through and walked all over the campus, even going to the elementary school. After walking for well more than 10 minutes, I decided to retrace my steps, as I slowly walked backed to the learning lab. So I headed up the stairs, but by the time I finally went up and wrote a reflection, the class was over. I had wasted the initial time I had trying to skip the walk and now I had missed my chance. This taught me how I should do everything genuinely without finding the easy way out, learning that some things require actual care.

Communication

There wasn’t a really memorable story for this one, but I was able to work on a presentation for a game that I really liked. It was the first ever task I did. And while my friend was doing the easier tasks that got him 60 points in just a few minutes, I was doing something that I actually enjoyed. I was having fun researching the topic and creating the slides on the gameplay and all the characters, because this was my actual passion. So after 3 days or so, I finished my presentation and got the 60 points, but I was also able to do something fun for learning lab

Collaboration

In this one, I decided to work with my table and do the Silent Murder Mystery. The first time we tried this, we were promptly denied because Ms. Harris wasn’t in class and she was the only person who knew where the materials need were. After a week, we asked again and started the activity. There were two halves on the table, one with me and Bitchan working together, and the other with Eric and Daniel. I’m unsure what those two were doing, but Bitchan and I were working hard on the mystery, sorting the texts and trying to find a coherent story. Once we ended the activity, we were able to solve the mystery. This showed me that collaboration and teamwork was important.

Mindfulness

As I left, remembering what Ms. Harris told me, I opened the door, revealing a gust of cold air as it blasts into my face. I thought about taking out my phone and watching a few youtube shorts, even checking my messages, but decided its best not to. Then I walked down the stairs, hearing the metal clanging with each step on the turquoise stairs.

As I went on the walk, I noticed the sounds around me, of the fountains, and of the leaves, rustling. I continued to walk, past the gymnasium, observing 3 curious plate like metal items. taking a left, I walked near gate five, hearing the sounds of construction, the clanking of tools, and the yelling of workers. Seeing to people walk by, I decided to turn around, taking a turn to the cafeteria this time. I walked on the pebbles, each of them making a crumbling sound as I walked on them. It was at this moment where I truly felt peaceful.

I felt my throat to be dry, so I decided to head into the cafeteria, looking at some of the lunch ladies talking, and then noticing my presence. I asked for peach juice, yet they didn’t have any, so I then asked for the soda water. I opened the door, embracing the wind, and wondering where to travel next

So I continued on my journey, heading on to the track. Remembering the times of 4th grade, where our teacher, Ms. Negley, would release us early to lunch, only to make us go for lap around the track, it truly was the most enjoyable of times. And so I started my lap, noticing finally, the rustling of my coat, each item shaking around. As I walked, I kicked a football, which I named Gilbert, because of the words printed on it and its manufacturing company.

After the lap, I noticed the time, and decided to finally head back to the learning lab.

Modern Fairytale👻

Little Red Riding Hood

A young girl stands in front of a gravestone, lying in the rain. The only thing saving her from the harsh weather being a tattered red hood, worn on her dark hair.

“It’s been 5 years since your death… They said that you… you… killed yourself. No… no, no, no, no, no. I refuse to believe that you would ever do something like that. I know what I saw.”

A phone rings in her pocket. She looks down, and takes it out.

“Hello? Who is this?”

“Young lady, you’ve been outside in the rain for 4 hours already. Get back here. Now.”

“Sorry… I just…”

“I know you miss him, we all do, but that doesn’t mean you should just put your future on hold, you only have so much time”

“Yes… I know”

“Come back soon, or else you’re grounded for life”

“Coming back right now!”

The girl puts her phone back into her pocket. One hand on her hood, she runs quickly to the side walk. She pats down her jeans, the dirt on her knees crumbling down. In the rain, laid her bike, the seat soaked by water, handles aged down to rust, and tires, so flat they could barely move. She gets on her bike, peddling back to her home.

“Mom? I’m home.”

“Oh! Good, grandma needs you to deliver her medicine!”

“Seriously? This weather?”

“You’re already dirty, so might as well bike to her home while you’re at it!”

“Fine…”

She ended the conversation, with a sigh. Turning back to the door, grabbing a bottle of pills. Going back on her bike, she noticed that there were holes in the tire. Heaving another sigh, she stares at the forest, behind her house. It was a shortcut, a muddy path leading directly to the back yard of her grandmothers home. The girl put the bottle of pills in her pocket, and walked slowly into the forest

The trees were as tall as the eyes could see, the bushes covering almost every path. The girl walked around ever obstacle, getting her boots muddied, and her hood, now soaked. In the distance, she saw something. A shadow. One of a large humanoid, nearly 3 meters tall. But with a blink, the shadow was gone. The girl started to breathe, heavily. More and more, memories rushing in.

She was still 10 at the time. Her dad was in his home office, while she played with her toys. Telling tales of wolves and hunters, so real in a child’s mind. Crash. Growl. Scream. Her dad, down the hall, screaming, right before. Bang. The little girl, wearing her hood, stepped slowly to her dad’s office. The portraits on the walls seemingly glaring at her. The wooden floor, creaking with every step. The floral wallpaper, starting to twist and spiral. She put her hand on the golden door knob, opening it slowly. Then, she saw it. A pistol on the table. The window behind the desk broken. Files, pens, books, scattered throughout. A creature. A growl of a wolf. Claws of a beast. Eyes of a monster. And her dad. laid down on his desk. A hole, through his head.

She looked up. No, she thought to herself. That night. No. Soon, she continued walking. Through this dark forest.

“Grandma? I’m here!”

Not a single sound. The girl turns on the lights. Looking at the switch confused, she pulled out her phone, light shining from the camera.

“Grandma? Are you here?”

Entering the her grandmother’s room, the girl was consumed by nausea. On the bed of her grandmother, laid a creature. So horrible, just a sight caused the girl to freeze.

“Oh, grandmother,” she stuttered, “what big ears you have…”

“The better to hear you with, my child,” was the reply. The creature, wearing the skin of the girl’s grandmother, each limb tearing it apart.

“What big eyes you have,” The girl’s eyes, staring at the creature, shocked.

“The better to see you with, my dear.”

“Grandma, what large hands you have…”

“The better to hug you with.” The creature said with a smile.

“What a terrible, big mouth you have.”

The girl, from her back pocket, pulled out a pistol. The very same that her dad had. And with a scream, she fired the pistol, the creature lunging at her…

Finally, with a lick, the creature stood on top of her body.

“The better to eat you with.”

AI Use 👁️👄👁️

Instead of using AI to do all the work for me. instead, I would like to use it for inspiration and help with my ideas and begin my creative process, while still making my work unique and my own. To know I’m making progress, I will log all of my AI usage and write it down on a document. I will also write down my thoughts about the usage of AI in a journal each week to help me reflect.

EUA Skit 😁

From the skit, we were able to learn how to get past language barriers to work with other people of diverse cultures. We were also able to learn that we shouldn’t get mad at people just for not knowing a language.

The Tome of Reflection🪬

The challenge that tested our abilities the most, personally, is purple, this one was chosen because I believe that this one is the most open ended question, with only an outline to base our answers off of. To overcome it, we had to work together as a group to finally be able to come up with a sufficient answer about the ethics dilemma.

High School Excitement😁🫠

I look forward to the freedom of high school, as well as the new opportunities that it provides, such as being able to utilize tools that middle school didn’t have or didn’t allow before. I hope to be able to have a better learning experience during high school and be able to use the tools that I’m given. I hope to engage more during classes to be able to spend my time on more progressive work as well.

Looking back at middle school, I wish I had known more about the middle life and what to expect for high school to be able to better prepare for the challenges that lie ahead. I hope to also have known and had more experience. I wish to have known more about how much my middle school activities actually transferred towards my high school life. I wish to have been able to do more to help with my current learning experience. Learning more about high school could have been able to get me to build up my experiences to have more background for STUCO or even the after school activities in high school. With the knowledge I have now, I hope only to be able to work towards an experience where I’m able to have my best high school life.

Even during elementary, I had still tried to “prepare” myself for high school by studying, though of course I didn’t understand any high school topics, but still, I tried to understand. This helped me a build a foundation of both perseverance and endurance. I was able to study every night, though now, I wish that I could tell myself not to skip ahead, because what was the point if I didn’t understand a single word?

Welcome to Your New Portfolio!

Why have a digital portfolio at SAS?

Creating a portfolio, or blog is a great way to collect all the work you’ve done throughout your academic career. You can include academic, athletic, and personal artifacts or experiences that you want to share with a wider audience. This is a great way to organize all your learning in one place and you can take it with you when you leave SAS.  When you make your portfolio, you create posts that are categorized according to your subject. Some categories have already been set up for you, but if you need more categories you can add them as needed. It’s important that your posts have the following:

  • An engaging title – this should not include the name of the subject since this is referenced in the category. Think of this as the first opportunity to engage and hook your reader!
  • Body – this is where you share your learning. This should include a combination of text and media in the form of images, graphics, and embedded videos. You should always consider how your post looks to your audience. Is it engaging and organized? Do they want to keep reading?
  • Category – select one that has been set for you or add a new category. Posts can have more than one category e.g. Humanities and Myself as a Learner
  • Tags – create tags that can be used as keywords to describe your post. Tags help organize your post a little more! Aim to have 3-5 tags for each post. For example, if you are posting about a novel you wrote, you might want the following tags: #Fiction, #MurderMystery, #Theme, #PlotDiagram
