PE Badminton

What did I learn?

I learned forehand and backhand grip, forehand serve and backhand serve. Also how to hit the shuttlecock really hard when you want to hit a long serve and where do you stand when you want to hit a short serve

What did I do good?

I did good on forehand serves and forehand grips.

What do I need to improve on?

I need to improve on the backhand stuff like backhand serve and backhand grip

Unit 4 Dystopian Fiction Reflection

What did I learn about Dystopian Fiction?

I learned that there are many different types of Dystopian Fiction. For example, totalitarianism, control of nature, dehumanization, social control, illusion of utopia, and sameness.

In The Giver, each birthmother will produce only three newchildren is an example of dehumanization due to that in the real world, mothers should be able to control how many babies they want and not controlled by the government.

And not allowing the citizens to see color is a sign of control of nature and dehumanization due to that normal humans should have the right and should be able to see color, but changing their genes and taking their ability to see color is making them grow farther and farther from normal humans.

How does Dystopian Fiction encourage my to think about real life?

Most of the things I see in The Giver encourages me to question the real world and think if that also happens in real life.

For example, in The Giver, if you break three rules, you will be released which means to inject a chemical in your body that kills you. That happens in real life too, if you make a big mistake or if you break the law too many times, you will also be put to death and just like The Giver, in some countries the way that you are going to be put to death is the same way in the book.

Did you enjoy The Giver?

I enjoyed The Giver because it entertaining but also, in some parts, disturbing. The book allowed me to explore more into a world that is completely different from our’s world.

How has my ability to write academic paragraphs improved?

I practiced in Commonlit every time I finished reading one or two chapters and because of that practice, my topic in the paragraph has gotten more clear and I can now clearly present my reasoning and the logic in my paragraph to the teacher or the reader.

How have I become better at literature discussions?

We have three literature discussions through the time when we are reading The Giver. These are chapters 1-5, 6-11, and the last one, 12-19. I learned to validate other for example, ” I get your point!” “That is a really good point!” Also, I learned to paraphrase what others say to show that I’m listening to what they say and to show them what I think.

Unit 2 Ötzi reflection

What did I do?

During this unit, ‘Why should we care about the past? I worked on

  1. Making observations, inferences and wonderings
  1. Using photos and articles as evidence
  1. Writing a CER paragraph
  1. Asking and answering open and closed questions

Taking part in the Ötzi Mock Trial, my role was defense lawyer #2 .

What did I learn?

We should care about the past because it helps us learn about the past, how we got here, and how to change the future.

What worked well?

I am proud of the following work: Writing questions, predicting answers of the witnesses and questioning the witnesses

I am proud of the work above because I spoke loudly during the trial, and I predicted most of the answers of the witnesses correctly.

What did not work well?

  1. I found some of this work challenging: Thinking of more questions, saying things that made the witnesses say my predicted questions.
  1. I found the work above challenging because the witnesses might just not say your predicted answer, and you have to try questioning them more, so they say that answer.

Personal Relevance

Collaboration and communications skills are important in my future because I need to collaborate with my friends or the people I work with to complete good projects.

This is a photo of my work about predicting the witness’s answer given that their topic is cold weather and personal belonging

Bake Sale Reflection

What did I do?

I worked with my partner to calculate the unit cost for our two products and and calculated the income, total cost, batch cost and the money in the bag after all the calculations. We sold mango grapefruit drinks and marshmallow cookies with pretzels and dried fruits on top.

What did I learn?

I learned how to use ratio tables to calculate the batch cost and the unit cost for both of our products and how to relate the batch and unit cost with the recipe cost to the total cost and the total money made and got the final money in the bag.

What worked?

The income and the money we predicted that we would spend matched up so we successfully calculated the final markup price and the markup percent. Also, after we subtracted the money that we spent in the stands, we got the final price. I also collaborated with my friend really well with the part of who stay in our stand while the other one go out to buy stuff.

What did not work well?

We expected that the mango grapefruit dessert would be delicious and many people would like it, but we didn’t do it earlier. Instead, we did it the night before and we found out that it is not so good tasting so we changed our plan of making the dessert so we put all the ingredients that was supposed to make the dessert in the blender and blended it into a drink. We should have tried earlier and not have waited till the last minute.

How is relevant for me?

This project taught me how to always prepare ahead of time and to discuss with my partner on how to do our project and our separate jobs like packaging and making the drinks and going out to buy food from other stands while the other person stays at the stand to sell the products.

Egg car reflection

The criteria for the egg car is that the car must have two safety systems, our car has a bumper on either side of the car and a big one in front of the car to protect the egg from the force when it hits the cement block.

We see Newton’s 1st law in action with the egg car when it hits the cement block. Newton’s 1st law states that an object in motion stays in motion unless acted upon by an outside force. This is shown in the egg car experiment when the car hit the cement block and the block restrains it from keep moving.

We see Newton’s 3rd law in action with the egg car when the car hits the cement block on the bottom of the ramp and the car bounces back. Newton’s 3rd law states that every object in action has an equal and opposite reaction. This is shown when the egg car hit the cement block and bounces back, the force that the egg car hit the cement block hit back so the car will have a force that brings it back.

The part of building the car went well, we agreed on how to build the car and added parts with our own thinking in it. For example, he added his part which is a bumper on each side of the car and I added a bumper in front of the car. I also added a “roof” to the egg so it wouldn’t fall out. We had to strap a seatbelt to the egg out of tape to make sure that the egg won’t have the momentum to keep moving forward.

The part where we had to actually use the real egg and do the experiment didn’t go well due to that we only practice about how the egg won’t fly put of the car. But what we did not worry about was how to keep the egg from not cracking. The egg car will have an impact of force acting on it when it hits the cement block, this is the main reason of why the egg cracked in the back. To solve it, we might need to put a bumper right behind the egg to reframe it from cracking because of the impact.

It is important to know Newton’s law because science is used to develop airbags and seatbelts in the vehicle to protect the passengers and the driver safe from an accident. When a car is stopped by an outside force, the people inside the vehicle will keep moving forward because there is a momentum that keeps moving you forward and the airbags, seatbelts and the crumple zones prevent that.

Art Reflection

Artwork piece

Plaster Pumpkin

I made this pumpkin by crumbling a few pieces of paper to look like a ball and then I wrapped some rubber bands twice around the ball to make the parts that sink in. Next, I wrapped a layer of paster around it and after I finished the first layer, I wrapped another group of rubber bands around the parts that I wrapped before to make it look like it is sinking inside even more. Lastly, I painted the pumpkin orange that I mixed and a the stem purple and black.

Creative Writing Reflection

What are We Doing?

Writing a fictional story based on a theme that matters to me.

What are We Learning?

What are we learning?

Theme (my purpose for writing this story, my message to readers)

Character Development (creating believable characters with positive & negative traits)

Plot (the sequence of events in my story; Western and Eastern approaches to storytelling)

Setting (the world that I create for my story)

What’s Working?

I enjoyed planning how my story is going to work out and changing the plots and the story’s theme, also, I really liked giving my character names to make them feel live and that they are really interesting and has a lot of character traits to write from. I got the inspiration from my favorite series of books called “Dork Diaries” and it is just like my story, which is filled with high school drama and friendship problems. My favorite sentence is “e up at four in the morning the next day and went to the stadium with my early packed gear. I skated around the rink, trying to think of what my friends, my parents, and my coaches.”

Areas for Growth

I need to stick more to the topic because at first, I was telling an interesting story about a hockey game and and it sticked to the theme very well, but after a while, I just didn’t write anything that is related to the theme.

Personal Relevance

It helps me relieving all my worries by say them in my story through the characters and it helps me explore more in my imagination and allows me to find ways in real life problems

Swimming Reflection

I learned how to use a snorkel and how to use flippers to improve my kicking in the water. Also, I learned how to use signal underwater to gesture to my partner if I am well or not. What’s more, I learned how to enter the water on the “beach” to snorkel and with my partner’s help, put on my swimming gear.

Critical thinking Activity reflection

What did I do?

I built a path with the color cards for Indi (a robot car) to make it go in different directions. I also built a rollercoaster for the marble with different paths to get to the end

What did I learn?

Critical thinking is solving problems with many ideas and figuring out how it works with the problem. For example, we built 3 different paths or choices for the marble.

What did not work?

I struggled to build different paths and connecting it for both the rollercoaster and the Indi robot car. I also struggled to make the marble go the way I want it the go.

Personal Relevance

I did good on building the paths once I started, it was very smooth the follow my own thinking and build the puzzle. But I need to work on my actual critical thinking on how to build the paths for the marble rollercoaster and the Indi robot car.

Unit 1 Olympic Portfolio Reflection

  1. What did I work on?
  1. During this unit, Campaign for the Olympics, I worked on creating a pitch and persuade script to convince the “IOC” to choose Los Angeles to host the 2032 summer Olympics. I used note cards to help me memorize my lines on the script. I also created a presentation using Canva using the SAS databases to complete my research about Los Angeles. I used persuasive sentence starters to make my presentation more persuading to the audience.
  1. What did I learn? Why do global sporting events exist?
  1. Global sporting events exist to make the city’s economy better and to bring people together to celebrate different cultures through sports. They showcase the host country’s culture is a positive influence in the world.
  1. What worked well?
  1. I am proud of these things: I did the presentation beautifully and completed my script well by stating evidence and inserting explanations along with the evidence I found.
  1. I am proud of the things above because I have never stated evidence and explained it before and now, I know how to write a good presentation with evidence and explanations.
  1. What did not work well?
  1. I found some things challenging, I can’t memorize my note cards, so I got an approaching on the rubric where it says that I can make eye contact with the audience 70% to 80% and sometimes read from note cards.
  1. I found the things above challenging because I printed My note cards just the night before I don’t really have time to memorize them properly. I only have time to read through them one time.
  1. Personal Relevance
  1. Collaboration and communications skills are important in my future because I need to collaborate with my partner to complete the criteria together and we need to talk about how we make our presentations.
