UNIT 4 DYSTOPIAN FICTION REFLECTION

What did I learn about dystopian fiction?

I learned that dystopian fiction is a genre of storytelling about a world that the main character thinks is a utopian world but the reader knows for sure that it is not a perfect world rather than a disturbed world. It also includes 7 topics which is totalitarianism, constant surveillance, social control, illusion of utopia, control of nature, dehumanization, and conformity.

How does dystopian fiction encourage me think about real life?

Dystopian fiction has made me consider that our life is that our life is not as perfect as the world in dystopian fiction. For example, the world in The Giver is that when a newborn is not quite a limit of what the citizens are supposed to be. Then the newborn gets released and unfortunately dies. This is completely different from our life. You don’t just kill someone because they are not what you want. Instead give them a chance.

I enjoyed the giver because it was a very specific and detailed book and the characteristics of Jonas was a normal twelve year old boy living in a messed up place where there are so many messed up things happening in that world.

How has my ability to write academic paragraphs improved?

How have I become better at literature discussions?

I became better at literature discussions by practicing in class and at home. My ability to validate someone has also improved a lot. This discussion has built many friendships between me and my partners.

HEALTH COMIC UNIT 1 REFLECTION!

This is our comic named Funny but Funky Filters!

I think safety behaviours like sleep and addiction and filters are important for physical and mental health. Because without enough sleep, the melatonin dissappears and you get dark circles around your eyes which is ugly! So don’t let social media and tablets to harm your health.

You can go to your parents, your guardians, your teachers if you are not feeling safe online.

Social media and technology most significantly impact teens by shaping their mental health through constant social comparison, cyberbullying, and sleep disruption, fostering unrealistic views, while also affecting attention and potentially hindering crucial skill development .(While offering connection, the relentless exposure to idealized lives, curated content, and the pressure for constant validation can lead to increased anxiety, depression, poor body image, and loneliness, creating challenges for self-regulation and healthy development.

I would put guardian mode on and check if this is AI or real. I was proud of learning how to protect myself online.

SOCCER RELECTION PE

What did we learn?

We learned how to kick a soccer ball legally and pass to our teammates. We learned how to collaborate effectively with teammates and win a match or two. We also learned how to dribble.

What worked?

My team was a mix of boys and girls so we learned how to collaborate even though some of us was not as good as the other people.

Personal Relevance

The soccer unit helped me learn about how to collaborate with other people and work well. This unit also helped me learn more soccer dribbles and passes and shooting skills. It helped me a lot and will do to in the future.

What is something YOU can work on?

I can also work on something like my technique because some of the time when I get the ball, it gets stolen and I was frustrated so if I can work on my technique better, it will help me be a better soccer player.

Unit 2 Otzi Unit Portfolio Reflection

  1. What did I work on?
  1. During this unit, ‘Why should we care about the past?’, I worked on
  1. Making observations, inferences and wonderings
  1. Using photos and articles as evidence
  1. Writing a CER paragraph
  1. Asking and answering open and closed questions
  1. Taking part in the Otzi Mock Trial, my role was expert witness and I made slides and practiced answering questions that me and my partners think would be asked and by not knowing the questions that were asked in the real mock trial.
  1. What did I learn? Why should we care about the past?
  1. We should care about the past because it brings knowledge of how the future was made. Also we now know that neolithic people were skilled and resourceful. But also when we dove deeper into Otzis health problems, we found out that he had similar ones as the ones we have today.
  1. What worked well?
  1. I am proud of the following work the Otzi mock trial, where we did the real trial and I was confident and fluent about the questions asked. I am also proud of the CER paragraphs I wrote because they meet the goals well. I am also proud of the sketchnotes I did because they had photos/drawings as well as words to make it more fun and engaging.
  1. I am proud of the work above because I have shown good work in all of these activities.
  1. What did not work well?
  1. I found some of this work challenging, because when I was practicing the answers I was going to be asked, I was frustrated and anxious about the actual questions lawyers would ask. Since I had no one to practice with, I managed to use the AI chatbot and made it work.
  1. I found the work above challenging because it was a hard part of not knowing what questions the lawyers are going to ask but to practice on your own.
  1. Personal Relevance
  1. Collaboration and communications skills are important in my future because when you are doing a big project, you will have to communicate respectfully with your partners and make sure no one is left out. Also being a good collaborator means that you work well with anybody and don’t make drama about things you wish you didn’t get selected to do.
  1. This is a photo of my work about sketchnotes with drawings and words explaining what archaeology is.

Bake Sale : Tasty Profit Project Reflection

What did I do?

Me and my partners made snickerdoodles and sold them for some fake money at the ………… Day 1, we chose the type of cookie/dessert we were going to make. We also determined the ingredients needed to bake it. We converted the cups into grams. So we chose snickerdoodles because it is a unique and mind blowing thing to eat and sell. Day 2, we also determined the unit price of each cookie by . Day 3, we created an explanation for a cost of 1 batch of recipe. Day 4, we prepared a pitch and printed the papers that would show the math behind the project for the next day.

What did I learn?

I learned how to calculate the unit price for the batch and marked up the price so I can make more profit. I also learned that collaboration is key in the work because i wouldn’t have made it without the help of my partners. Doing the actual baking was hard because we were not professional bakers but we pushed each other and made it. For the percent markup, we chose a price which is not too expensive, and added the markup price to the price it took to make the cookie.

What worked?

Our buissness was pretty successful since our income was 1592 yuan and by subtracting the cost to make 1 batch, it was 1268 yuan. Our profit was 1268 yuan and me and my partners were super happy about it.

What did not work well?

Overall the whole unit worked pretty well but sometimes we have small problems. Like on the morning of the bake sale, me and my partner tried to take a whiteboard downstairs and he insisted on breaking the whiteboard apart instead. So I was pretty frustrated about it and was scared that he didn’t know how to fit it back. But he solved it and I was pretty happy.

How is this relevant for me?

It was very fun being with my partner and doing the bake sale. I enjoyed every bit of it (maybe not the math part) but still it was fun.

P.E L4 SWIMING REFLECTION

What did I learn?

I learned how to use a snorkel properly and improve my stamina and swimming properly. In freestyle, I learned to kick harder and push myself to my limits. And in breaststroke, I learned to kick harder and bend my legs to push forward.

What can I improve on?

Since I am in the highest group, the swim team people are much faster and stronger than me and my other fellow people. But we pushed and managed to keep up with the swim team and I am pretty proud of it. I can still improve on my stamina and keep going forward to push myself.

Personal Reflection

Even though I had some problems with the snorkel, I did good at swimming and snorkels! 🙂

Science Egg Car Reflection

Video linked here:

https://saschina-my.sharepoint.com/personal/melissa_kirwin_saschina_org/_layouts/15/stream.aspx?id=%2Fpersonal%2Fmelissa%5Fkirwin%5Fsaschina%5Forg%2FDocuments%2FB2%20Egg%20Car%20Videos%2FIMG%5F0315%2Emov&referrer=StreamWebApp%2EWeb&referrerScenario=AddressBarCopied%2Eview%2Ed2d346cc%2D7320%2D41c2%2D9cd2%2Db078e6184642

What did I do?

Me and my partner created a egg car show that it can roll down the ramp freely and save the egg from cracking.

What did I learn?

I learned that Newton’s 1st and 3rd law can connect to my egg car. Newtons 1st law, an object at rest will stay at rest while an object in motion will stay in motion unless acted on by another force. I can see this from when the car hits the cement block, the car ushers to a stop which is the object in motion. Then the egg will keep wanting to go forward because of inertia. Newtons 3rd law states that every action there is an equal and opposite reaction and we can see it in the car where the car hits the cement block (action) then the car goes back (reaction).

What worked?

The car we made was a tube shaped place where we put the egg in, and shock absorbers/ crumple zones to make the force smaller. I also worked well in collaborating since we did different parts at first, then put the parts together to create an egg car.

What did not work?

At first, our design was great but we soon realized that it was too long. So me and my partner had to cut the egg car shorter in order to barely fit the length limit. We also suggested that if the tube goes face forward up, the egg will likely crash since you might not know when the egg might fall out.

Personal Relevance

I now know that in order for cars to be safe, they need seatbelts, crumple zones, airbags and many more. We tested that if the size of the crumple zone was larger, the percentage of the passenger surviving is larger. I used the website in onenote to experiment too. This is stating that if cars have all of these safety procedures, the passenger/person will have a bigger chance of surviving.

BALLOON CAR REFLECTION

WHAT DID I DO?

The balloon car was built by using 4 wheels 2 axels, 2 straws, 1 balloon, and styrofoam board. We used it to learn about Newtons Laws and how to draw a free body diagram. The criteria was to make a balloon car to move forward in a straight line.

WHAT DID I LEARN?

I learned the Newtons laws :

  1. An object in motion will stay in motion while an object at rest will stay at rest unless acted on by another force. We see this in the balloon car when the balloon lets out air, causing the car to move forward.
  2. Force = Mass x Acceleration. We see this when we put washers, weights on the car allowing there to be more mass on the car so that we need more force to make the balloon car move forward.
  3. For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction. We see this in the balloon car when the balloon is letting out air, it is pushing the car forward which is the opposite reaction.

WHAT WORKED?

My partner and I built an balloon car that at first, didn’t work. It couldn’t go forward because the balloon didn’t have much force. But the next lesson we fixed the car and it actually went in a straight line and zoooooomed across the classroom. For the data gathering, we were also very specific about the numbers and measured it to the hundredths. So overall the investigation worked well.

WHAT DID NOT WORK?

Connection to the Newtons laws was hard because I didn’t really know about the “Law of INERTIA” and the word INERTIA itself. So in order to get a brief understanding, I went home and searched online to learn about the word. In the test, I think I didn’t get the word still so I need to practice that for the next test. (If we still have one)

PERSONAL RELEVANCE

When I watch the TV, there is a channel to Science so I used to love watching it but didn’t get it. But now after this unit, I can make connections with Newtons 1st, 2nd, and 3rd law to the TV channel. I can also get what the action / reaction is and can connect it to real life + TV too! 🙂

^-^

French Reading Reflection

1- Post a screenshot of the reading

2- Attach your recording. You can download it from Schoology.

3- Explain what is hard (or a bit hard) to you and why? Give an example.

I think it was hard because some words I don’t know very well like difficile. But after I listened to Ms. Inna’s recording, everything made sense again.

4- Explain what you think is quite easy. GIve an example.

But most of the words were ones that we learned in class, so that makes the recording much more easier.

5- Explain how was your pronunciation the first days of school and how it’s now. Did you improve ?  How much? I improved a lot because at the start of the school year, I was saying the letters that I shouldn’t have said. And now, I can identify it and say it correctly! 🙂
