What did I learn about dystopian fiction?
I learned that dystopian fiction is a genre of storytelling about a world that the main character thinks is a utopian world but the reader knows for sure that it is not a perfect world rather than a disturbed world. It also includes 7 topics which is totalitarianism, constant surveillance, social control, illusion of utopia, control of nature, dehumanization, and conformity.
How does dystopian fiction encourage me think about real life?
Dystopian fiction has made me consider that our life is that our life is not as perfect as the world in dystopian fiction. For example, the world in The Giver is that when a newborn is not quite a limit of what the citizens are supposed to be. Then the newborn gets released and unfortunately dies. This is completely different from our life. You don’t just kill someone because they are not what you want. Instead give them a chance.
I enjoyed the giver because it was a very specific and detailed book and the characteristics of Jonas was a normal twelve year old boy living in a messed up place where there are so many messed up things happening in that world.
