Dystopian Fiction – The Giver

What did I do?

I learned about dystopian fiction by writing academic paragraphs + discussing topics related to the book: The Giver.

What did I learn?

I learned how to build better vocabulary and words that I never learnt, using transition words, writing academic paragraphs and collaborate discussions.

What worked?

the part that worked in this book is that I was learning new vocabulary in a more fun way because this book is also very entertaining to read and it makes me want to add on more with only 23 chapters which added a cliff hanger, so It made me very curious what happened next? We collaborated a lot with something called discussion notes by picking a topic and taking notes connected to it which mkaes that summarizing the story

What did not work?

I struggled with using academic paragraphs because usually I wouldn’t stretch a whole long paragraph in a box i would usually make them a 2 sentences by explaining the story in a good way but it wouldn’t count as academic.

Personal Relevance

When I don’t know what to do I write stories that I read before and get inspired, reading this story as a class helped me a lot and it made me connected so well to the story which felt like I was in the story like kind of spectating everything and watching scenes then recording everything in our notebooks with ideas and such good information.

Unit II – Ötzi Unit Reflection

What did I work on?

We worked on observations, inferences, Wonderings, CER’s, practicing open and closed questions etc. For observations we looked at images to see if Otzi was murdered or not murdered with Inferences and wonderings. CER (Claim, Evidence, Reasoning), So I tried working on convincing that how and every specific detail of when he was murdered, so the opposing team (defense) would have weaker evidence and proof of Otzi. During the court trial, I worked on my arguments and questions so they could be well stated and strong, I wanted my closed questions to be specific and well-done for expert witnesses to show proof which also can lessen the defense team’s evidence.

What did I learn?

I learned about why we should care about the past, because it’s very interesting and unique for people to learn about what happened in the past vs present *now meaning today or this year you’re living in* because for example you have a problem that was like 2-3 years ago but you have to think back hard, what did I do, how did i cause this situation to happen to you try to do like a sort of active recall to remember the situation and problem causing or preventing it to happen.

What Worked?

During the court I’m proud that I wasn’t as nervous as I thought I would be because usually talking in front of big crowds or a lot of people make me stutter because I’m scared if what I said make sense or if I was wrong or right (depends if I’m trying to make a statement about something than yes, I’m nervous) but I practiced asking my questions out loud to make sure I’m clear and looking like I understood/understanding the assignment.

What didn’t work?

I think I could have been  a little more confident because I didn’t look or seem like I was really into asking them the questions it just looked like I was reading a passage and the letting them answer, I could’ve made a statement about if I disagreed and showed them that I have a different thinking and want to show/prove it my way by being more efficient and confident.

Personal Relevance

This is important because in this overall unit/lesson we got to collaborate and communicate more which helps us with different projects or PPT’s to have a strong statement and conclusion, therefore, this helps me by better sharing my opinions to make people agree and convince them that this is what I think and I recommend that you should think this way too.

Bake Sale Reflection

What did we do?

we first calculated the amount of ingredients we were going to use and then calculated the profits, markups, selling price etc. And then after doing all the calculations me and Yubeen wanted to do Strawberry matcha Sago for the Bake sale.

What did we learn?

This was also my first time baking and learnt how to do unit prices (cups to grams etc.)

What worked?

I’m really proud that we also sold out and tried our best to make an equal amount and at first we only had 3 customers but then more people started coming with curiosity and interest so it became pretty popular.

What did not work?

We were rushing and behind in this project with late work and forgot to bring the posters (we just used our laptop to showcase) and then we made a big mess aftermath.

Personal Relevance

This made me learn how to make something new and in the future now I know what profits and how to calculate when buying something.

Egg car Challenge

what did I do?

in this challenge, we made small cars out of paper, wheels, and straw, we used an egg as a passenger. the hard part is trying to not make the egg crack and fall out.

What did I learn?

Newton’s 1st law (Inertia) and 3rd law (Action-Reaction) were seen in this activity. Inertia was mostly about the seatbelt and not making the passenger fly forward. Newton’s 3rd law was seen when the car hit the rock/bricks which causes the car to have an reaction.

what worked?

The egg didn’t fly out and it was safe, at first we and my partner were a bit nervous that the egg and car would get demolished, but after it was tested the car and egg was safe. we decided to make the front the back so the egg wouldn’t hit or get cracked, and there was a pretty strong crumple zone.

what did not work?

when we just started this egg car challenge, me and my oartner didn’t know what to do because we already saw almost half of the group was almost finished, we both decided to make a long crumple zone, make a hole inside of the paper tube with tightening the tube.

Personal Relevance

Now I know why crumple zone of cars are so important for safety in life, and I can see the different during car crash tests. having a gigantic and strong crumple zne will be able to make the person in the car more safe and careful.

Dance reflection

1.What did you learn about dance in this 13 week course?  Think about the different styles of dance, how to create choreography, how to collaborate and performance skills?

i learned how to collaborate with people more.

2.What skills can you take from dance class to other subjects and activities?

by collaborating more with other people during projects or small group work etc.

3.How can you improve your dance skills?

by locking in on what/which movement do I need to work on by looking at each dance movement clearly so I can improvise.

4.What styles of dance are you most interested in?

I’m most interested in hiphop, street dance and, k-pop (depends what type),

5.Evaluate your Spotlight performance.  How did you do?

I think I could improve with my core muscles and lessen my dance strength, but I did do good on face expressions and doing my best on looking at the audience.

6.How do you want to engage with dance in the future? (In 7th grade).

for the options (no more rotations), i want to choose dance because, I think dance is a passion I really like, and i think it’s very fun by learning new cherographys and concepts that are new to me.

Creative writing reflection

What are we doing?

In our current unit, Creative writing. We are writing a fictional story based on the theme that matters to me.

What are we learning?

Theme (my purpose for writing this story, my message to readers)

Character development (creating believable characters with positive and negative traits)

Plot (the sequence of events in my story; Western and Eastern approaches to story telling)

Setting (the world I create for my story)

What’s working:

What story elements did you enjoy planning on?

I enjoyed planning on making the character traits for my protaganist and my antagonist, because they are both very different but still is unseperable until the antagonist kind of like back stabs her own best friend because their too different even though friendship doesn’t matter how different you are from your best friend in reality.

How did you deal with these challenges?

It was a bit hard for me to think of a theme precisely so it would be a very good connecting story and a very heartful one too

The best line from my story:

“I will never ever forget the day I met you.”

Areas of growth

I think kind of went thought the story like a little too rushed to I think I can improve on starting with a slow beginning and then the story gets even more interesting.

Personal relevance:p

How can creative writing help you in real life?

Creative writing helps me to think better about having like a fun dramatic life and brings me home and makes me feel good about a story I wrote.

Do you enjoy creative writing – would you possibly want to continue using your imagination to tell stories that matter to you?

Yes, anything related to fiction or fantasy is what I really like.

Balloon Car

What did I do?

The balloon car twas built using weights, straws, cardboard (plastic type), bottle caps as wheels, and obviously balloons. We used it to learned about Newtons 1st law (law of Inertia) and Newtons 2nd law (Force, Mass, Acceleration) *F=ma*.

What did I learn?

Newtons 1st law says and talks, about Inertia. Inertia means an object will keep doing whatever it is currently doing unless net force. For example, If you kick a soccer ball and it’s just staying in the same position on field, until someone/something kicks it. Now, for Newtons 2nd law, we learned about force, mass and acceleration, This law means the net force on an object is equal to it’s mass multiplied by it’s acceleration. (For example), If you push a shopping cart just a little bit, it speeds up a little bit because you didn’t use that much strength and force to push the cart, if you pushed it twice as hard, than it would go twice as fast. Lastly, Newton’s 3rd law was about action and reaction, This law means, every Action has a equal , opposite reaction, this was from Sir Isaac Newton himself.

What worked?

After tons of hard work on this balloon car project, me and my partner put the right size of straw and balloon was blowing out good amount of air and the whole balloon car was moving to a Applied force *Fa = the right force*. It wasn’t the fastest car but it still moved quite well, which was pretty impressive already.

What did not work?

When we just started. this activity, the balloon car wasn’t moving at all because the size of the straw wasn’t big enough, so the air wasn’t causing the vehicle to move, It only wasted the balloon’s air.

Personal Relevance:

This will achieve my goals in life by being a critical and active learner because this balloon car unit teached me a lot about the type of enviorment or scientific thinking that makes me so curious each time and I want to learn more about it and how it was invented, so I think this activity of balloon car was a very creative idea and I wish/hope to do it again.

Growth and Development Health Unit

Why is it important to understand the changes that occur during puberty?

It’s important because you need to take careful of yourself when you start puberty, because it can happen it any time. So it’s important to always to be prepared and know some knowledge about it.

What is the change that you feel most confident about

I feel most confident about trying to hide my mood swings when I really need to so I don’t spread my mood swings to others or scare the person away.

What is the change that you feel most concerned about?

maybe learning about when girls start their menstruation because that’s usually the main thing that happens to girls with involving acne, mood swings, cramps etc.

When looking for information online. How can you ensure it is credible and appropriate?

you make sure that it’s spilling correct information and showing that you think your ready to read it if your mature enough.

What is one aspect of your learning you want to improve on moving forward?

I want to improve on getting better at remembering the puberty units so I am prepared.
