Eagle Apprenticeship Reflection

Skillful communicator

For our project on skillful communication, we decided to take on task #14, which involved creating a BuzzFeed-style quiz. My partner and I chose to design a quiz based on the magical world of Harry Potter, where participants would answer a series of questions, and based on their choices, they would be sorted into different Hogwarts houses. We began by brainstorming a variety of Harry Potter-related questions, crafting scenarios that would challenge participants to think about how they would react in various situations. Additionally, we included simpler questions, such as asking about their favorite animal, to add a fun and engaging element to the quiz.As we worked together, we used logic to determine how the questions would flow into each other, ensuring that each answer would lead to a clear and appropriate house selection. This required effective communication regarding which questions would be most impactful and how they related to specific houses. Once we reached a consensus on our final questions, we proceeded with our ideas, refining them further to create an enjoyable quiz experience. Throughout the process, our ability to communicate effectively was crucial, allowing us to collaborate successfully and finish creating the quiz with a sense of accomplishment and teamwork.

Critical thinking

During Task #14, we faced a significant challenge that involved ranking various items based on their usefulness for survival on a deserted island. This task required not only critical thinking but also strong collaboration among team members, as we needed to assess which items would be the most beneficial in such a dire situation. Each member of our team brought a unique viewpoint regarding the usefulness of the items, which made the ranking process particularly complex and sometimes contentious. We found ourselves in several spirited debates, one of which involved determining which type of food would be more important than the other. This discussion was particularly challenging because one option offered significant nutritional and caloric benefits, while the other was better suited for the environment, more adaptable, and had a longer shelf life. Ultimately, we reached a consensus on selecting the water filtration straw, which could convert salty ocean water into clean, drinkable water. We made this decision because we recognized that having access to fresh water was more crucial than food; humans can survive for a more extended period without food than without water.

Effective collaborator

In Task #7, we engaged in a silent murder mystery, a unique and challenging exercise that required us to communicate without using any words. This task pushed us to rely entirely on non-verbal cues, such as hand gestures and the strategic movement of cards, to express our thoughts and ideas. Initially, we struggled to establish a common foundation for our story, which led to a few non-verbal disagreements as we navigated through our differing interpretations. However, once we identified a clear starting point, our ideas began to align more effectively. During the murder mystery, I was specifically assigned the responsibility of locating cards that matched our chronologically organized sequence and placing them in the appropriate positions. Although we continued to experience brief moments of conflict, we managed to maintain our pace and stayed focused on solving the mystery. This experience was quite enlightening, as it highlighted the crucial role that verbal communication plays in our daily lives. Without the ability to articulate our thoughts clearly, we found it significantly more challenging to collaborate and complete the task. Our reliance on gestures and expressions underscored how essential clear communication is for problem-solving and teamwork. Overall, this task served as a powerful reminder of the importance of effective communication, illustrating that while non-verbal communication can be valuable, it often falls short in comparison to the clarity and efficiency that verbal communication provides. This reflection has encouraged me to appreciate the nuances of communication and the impact it has on collaborative efforts.

Resilience

In Task #1 of my apprenticeship, our group took on the exciting challenge of learning a new skill, and we collectively decided to focus on juggling. To kick off our journey, we began by watching a comprehensive YouTube tutorial that covered the fundamental techniques of juggling. Initially, I found it quite difficult to get started; my throws were erratic, and the balls seemed to be flying everywhere except where I intended. However, as I continued to watch the video and absorb the instructions, I began to grasp the essential movements necessary for juggling. To build my confidence, I first practiced the motion with just two balls. This allowed me to get a better feel for the rhythm and timing involved in juggling. Meanwhile, I noticed that some of my partners were picking it up more quickly, which added a bit of pressure but also motivation. Despite feeling a bit overwhelmed at times, I was able to focus on how to throw the balls into the air in a controlled manner, and gradually, things started to click. After dedicating some time to practice at home, I was thrilled to find that I could manage juggling three balls simultaneously. This progression not only boosted my confidence but also reinforced the importance of perseverance and practice when learning a new skill. Overall, this task taught me valuable lessons about patience, the effectiveness of visual learning, and the satisfaction that comes from mastering a challenging skill through collaboration and dedication.

Creative learner

In Task #8, our assignment involved creating an engaging travel brochure for the vibrant city of Toronto. This project was particularly exciting for me because I had little prior knowledge of the city’s main landmarks, while my friend had a wealth of information about them. This dynamic made me feel much more confident in our ability to effectively capture the essence, culture, and notable attractions of Toronto in our brochure. To bring our vision to life, we utilized a user-friendly template from Canva, which allowed us to design a visually appealing two-page brochure. We made sure to highlight many of Toronto’s most famous landmarks, showcasing a diverse range that included everything from futuristic skyscrapers to more traditional museums. As we worked together, I was impressed by how informative our brochure turned out to be. My partner excelled in explaining the significance of each landmark we featured, providing context that enriched the overall presentation. This collaborative effort not only enhanced my understanding of Toronto but also taught me the importance of teamwork when tackling creative projects. We managed to blend our strengths—my partner’s knowledge and my enthusiasm—into a cohesive and appealing brochure that effectively conveyed the allure of the city. Overall, this task was a wonderful opportunity for learning and creativity, and it deepened my appreciation for Toronto’s rich cultural landscape.

My goals with Generative AI

My goal with Gen AI is to use it as a handy learning tool, and not as the leader of ideas💡. I also want to use it regularly so that I can enhance my school work. I will regularly check with myself for whether or not I am using AI, and I am using it responsibly. I want to achieve my goal by the end of the 2024-2025 school year🗓️, so that I have a lot of time to understand and achieve my goal.

High School excitement: What I am looking forward to.

I am a high school freshman, meaning I am new to high school. It would obviously mean that is am looking forward to many things, and here are a few:

I am looking forward to competitive sports such as soccer and badminton, because of how much I love these sports. Going into high school, I expect sports like these to be much more thrilling and exhilarating.

I am looking forward to the new people that I will meet and group with. Interacting with other people and getting to know other people’s opinions is a fun, and creating debates with those people is even better.

Finally, I am looking forward to learning new subjects and ideas such as robotics and science. Subjects like these show us how our world works and how important it is to value these items. Also, I am waiting to be challenged and tested by high school and its work.

Why it is important to be a critical thinker.

Being a critical thinker, is to be aware of the technology around us, which is why I think it is important to be a critical thinker. Safety always comes first, whether it is in real life, or online.  A simple post about someone could mean the end of their career. That is why I think it is really important to be aware of what the consequences of an action could be.
