Semester 1: Integrated Mathematics 8

Active Learner Habits

Describe three strengths you bring to math class.

One strength I bring to math class is I am well prepared with materials to class.

Another strength I bring is I work well with everyone, so I even if I am paired with someone I never worked together before, I can still cooperate well and I am also really good at being creative and finding different solutions.

A third strength I bring is asking questions when I don’t understand something.

Area of Growth
Identify one Active Learner habit you want to improve during second semester.

One habit I want to improve this semester is to make sure I am responsible and remember to do all my work on time.

This is an area of growth for me because is to organize my notebook better so I am able to use it to its full potential.

Plan for Growth
Explain how you will work on improving this habit.

I will work on this habit by finding a better organization schedule.

One specific action I will take is to make a table of contents for all my notebooks.

Math Notation and Communication

The first image is the first few classes and the second one is recent, this shows improvement because I labeled my papers so I know what I am opening, or if I am looking for something.

Understanding Key Concepts

These are both from the sticker project, although they are not my full project. I strength this shows is how I am able to make accurate drawings including math concepts and make a simple idea come to life. Something I need to grow on is to maybe include the L4 standards better (I did the L4 but I’m not sure what happened so yeah)

Overall my work shows that I have grown in this semester, although some improvements still need to be done.

PE: Badminton Unit Reflection

I really like badminton, it’s a great sport and I am even starting a badminton class with my friend (Pinn Yi). In this unit, I learned about backhand and forehand serving, I realized that backhand serving is actually not that hard. I also learned how to cooperate with my team when we are playing (for some reason I usually prefer to play singles) I think I can still improve on communication with my team during plays (sometimes I am not really focused). Overall I think this as a great unit and was very fun.

Math: Designing a Story Problem Reflection

This is my story: Nancy Noodle began with 100 RMB in her pocket. For one week, she earned 10 RMB per day walking Sir Barks-a-Lot, a pug with more attitude than your math teacher on a Monday morning. But then Nancy decided work was interfering with her phone-scrolling time, so her boss, the terrifying Mrs. Grumbleton, slashed her pay to a pathetic 5 RMB per day for the next week. After Nancy’s laziness reached legendary levels (Sir Barks-a-Lot actually posted a selfie from her phone), Mrs. Grumbleton FIRED HER! Nancy then blew through almost all her cash in just 1 and a half days, leaving her with only 2 RMB to her name (spent 201 RMB in 1 and a half days). Desperate, she bought a lottery ticket the next day with her last 2 RMB and won 500 RMB!

Describe your story and what real-life situation it modeled?

This story is very relatable, many people have jobs and many people have been fired, it is a experience nearly everyone will have to go through in their lives. In my case this story idea came from a story I read. It was a story called The lottery. It was a dystopian story about a creepy lottery basically, but this led me to bring up the idea “lottery” which is how the story ends. Instead of going down the hill into dystopian we decided to make it a happy ending. Basically our story modeled a person who went through luck and unluck (as we all do) but in the end got a good ending.

What part of your project are you most proud of? Why?

I am most proud of my graph, because it took a while to find a good scale and sizable piece of paper.

What was the hardest part of creating your piecewise function?

The hardest part of thinking of a good story, even though we have a story, it wasn’t exactly interesting (as so to say) so this part was the hardest and we did not completely do it either.

If you could revise one part of this project, what would you improve and how?

I would of made a better more engaging story, maybe adding some fictional properties.

What did this project help you understand better about piecewise functions?

This project sort of gave me a clearer idea of what piecewise functions are and how word problems related to it will maybe look like.

Unit 3: Identity and Healthy Relationships Reflection

Analysing Healthy Relationships Video: https://www.canva.com/design/DAG7ESqbDsI/Ej2RAjIk5ybkWMM-0b_fKg/view?utm_content=DAG7ESqbDsI&utm_campaign=designshare&utm_medium=link2&utm_source=uniquelinks&utlId=h458fbacdba

For this project, me and my partner Gracy made a video analysing whether the two characters in Spy Family, Loid and Yor Forger had a health relationship. In this process, I learned about how media could portray the fact that honesty is not good in a relationship, although it could be just the context of this anime. Loid and Yor Forger both keep secrets from each other, but are also able to remain a pretty healthy relationship, in real life might not be possible. The “Health Watch News” which was the project me and gracy made, analyzing Spy x Family’s Forger family revealed a lesson about relationships about how daily acts of respect and teamwork can create the illusion of health even when foundational dishonesty undermines true intimacy. Because, although Loid and Yor demonstrate green-flag behaviors like mutual support, co-parenting synergy, and protective loyalty, their relationship remains structurally unstable due to the secrecy surrounding their spy/assassin secret identities. This highlights a critical distinction, how they have a surface-level harmony built on shared goals (Loid’s missions, and Yor’s trying to fit/Not being on the radar for being suspicious) cannot substitute for vulnerability and transparency, which are essential for making lasting trust. This further shows how media, showcasing how fiction can romanticize “noble lies” while actually modeling positive interpersonal habits, which sort of affects audiences to admire the characters’ care for one another but might also affect how audiences react and view secrets. This could also lead to people thinking that they don’t need to be honest because they have a good reason, but in reality, without transparency, relationships can easily fall apart.

Social Studies: Unit 2 Reflection

What was the most important thing I learned during the preparation for the debates?

The most impotant thing I learned during the preparation for the debate was from my AWESOME partner Miranda, she taught me to think about different perspectives and use out of the box ideology to get reasoning that the other side don’t have. But other than this, after the debate, I also realized debating is not that scary and wasn’t as bad as I thought it would be, and that if I was to do a debate again, I would speak more, and try to get my thoughts in.

What was the hardest part of this process? How did I work through it?

The hardest part for me was to get up and ask/answer questions during the crossfire. It seemed as though anything I said could be used against my argument, so it was hard. Furthermore, I had to sort of think on my feet and rebut the opponents as best I could. How did I work through it? Well I just did as much research as I could, and tried my best (I was up to the people who actually do debate, unlike me 🙁 which was very scary) But I tried my best and answered and gave questions successfully.

What piece of research or evidence do I feel was most powerful for my debate presentation?

I would say the best piece of evidence I had was “According to their research, before COVID-19 vaccines could ever be tested in humans, they were first evaluated in animals—including mice, rabbits, and monkeys—as required by global regulators. These preclinical animal studies provided essential proof of safety, demonstrating that the vaccines were not harmful and were safe to administer even to people of reproductive age. This critical step, gave researchers the confidence to rapidly advance into large-scale human trials. (LOGOS) ” (from the EFPIA) This evidence gave me physical proof of animal testing successes.

Where did I show persistence, preparation, and effective use of class time? Where could I improve?

I showed persistence, preparation and effective use of class time in most of the class times, I did a lot of research and tried my best. But, I think I could improve on getting into the mode more. Sometimes I’m reading, but my brain just doesn’t really cooperate, so I think I should take some brain breaks inbetween to just get the debate off my mind for a few minutes. I also think I should of put more time into practicing my script for the debate.

In what ways did my debate presentation effectively communicate my thinking? What would I change or improve if I had more time?

My debate presentation effectively communicated my thinking, it included all my important points supported with evidence and reasoning. If I have more time, I would have definitely practiced more with my script because I skipped a few parts due to the time.

What new skills did I gain during the debate preparation or the debate presentation?

Since I never debated before, this debate showed me what a real debate is like. It made me more confident and also less confident on my abilities. I realized that speaking up during a debate is very important, and I don’t have do depend on my partner just because she has debate experience.

1. What individual feedback did you see consistently? Glow/Grow?

I saw feedback about how I should practice debating more, and being more confident/talking more. A glow was how I have very good pacing.

2. What team feedback did you see consistently?

I saw a lot of feedback about how we should show more emotion, taking too much time on answering/giving questions.

3. Did the overall feedback map what you expected? Why/why not?

Yes, I think it made sense, but I think me and my partner both had a lot of emotion, we just didn’t get very fired up.

Health: Unit 2 Reflection on Learning

I used to think mental health was about just how you can control your emotions, actions, and beliefs. When listening to other people’s presentations (Anxiety, Depression, OCD, Addiction, and Eating Disorders) I thought that eating disorders where about how someone could not eat, maybe like an allergy or something, but now I know that eating disorders are not just about not eating, it is also about eating too much and then losing too much weight afterwards (eating a lot and then using drastic measures to take it all out again). For example, if someone ate a lot of food and then try to vomit it all out later, that would be a sign of having an eating disorder. I also noticed that all of these mental health conditions are connected to genes and family background, this changed my thinking very much. I used to think that genes don’t really matter and the only thing that matters was the way you do things and slowly get a mental condition, so I think it is very important to know and think about how family members may also have conditions and how they might affect me.

After this project I also realized that there is actually quite a lot of STIGMA in the media and even in some famous movies, this led me to think and look at a lot of different movies and books differently. For example, in percy jackson, they talk about how all the demigods either have ADHD or dyslexia, but I think this books shows it in a good way, saying that if they have it, they have a high likelihood of being related to a god. But in other movies like maybe the joker, they sort of put the scary and horror into mental hospitals which gives the feeling of having a mental disorder a negative connotation.

During this unit, I was surprised that there are so many different mental disorders that I don’t really understand and that they are all hidden in a way, so other people can’t really see. This made me think that I should be more careful about what I say and try to notice if any of my friends need support in any way.

Science Semester 1: Active Learner Reflection

My current goal is to submit all my assignments before the due dates. I have been doing this by writing down all my assignments in notes as soon as I get them so I can remember and complete them.

I am most proud of the effort I put into my comet (sound and light waves) project.

The biggest challenge I have been through was managing my time. I barely had enough time to finish my project due to the social studies project that was also going on.

I stayed positive during the whole time I was working on my project, even though I was a little stressed about the deadline being so close to other projects. A goal I have is to make sure I complete all the work in my notebook as well as the assignments on schoology.

Math: Unit 1 Reflection and Goal Setting

1.    I chose the L4 question about congruence as evidence of my best thinking because I read the question (Triangle DEB was translated so that D goes to E) which told me all that I needed, so instead of wasting all my time solving it I just read the problem.

2.    I chose question 8 as evidence of my best thinking because I thought I answered it wrong, but I actually got it right.

3.    Throughout this unit, I improved the most at using mathematical notation, during my pretest, I did not really know how to use it, but after I learned, I was able to use it in my summative. I also realized that reading the questions properly, makes doing the questions so much easier.

4.    I feel that I still need to work on just the general knowledge of math, for example, when I was doing the L4 question 2 I did not understand whether the order of the actions of transformations matter or not.

My strengths so far are congruence, transformations, and finding congruence. I want to work on using critical thinking while answering questions, double checking my work

My goal is to remember my homework and not do it last minute.

In the next unit, I would like to try to be more vocal in class. I might be awkward. If i get stuck I will ask my friends and my teacher.
