What was the most important thing I learned during the preparation for the debates?
The most impotant thing I learned during the preparation for the debate was from my AWESOME partner Miranda, she taught me to think about different perspectives and use out of the box ideology to get reasoning that the other side don’t have. But other than this, after the debate, I also realized debating is not that scary and wasn’t as bad as I thought it would be, and that if I was to do a debate again, I would speak more, and try to get my thoughts in.
What was the hardest part of this process? How did I work through it?
The hardest part for me was to get up and ask/answer questions during the crossfire. It seemed as though anything I said could be used against my argument, so it was hard. Furthermore, I had to sort of think on my feet and rebut the opponents as best I could. How did I work through it? Well I just did as much research as I could, and tried my best (I was up to the people who actually do debate, unlike me 🙁 which was very scary) But I tried my best and answered and gave questions successfully.
What piece of research or evidence do I feel was most powerful for my debate presentation?
I would say the best piece of evidence I had was “According to their research, before COVID-19 vaccines could ever be tested in humans, they were first evaluated in animals—including mice, rabbits, and monkeys—as required by global regulators. These preclinical animal studies provided essential proof of safety, demonstrating that the vaccines were not harmful and were safe to administer even to people of reproductive age. This critical step, gave researchers the confidence to rapidly advance into large-scale human trials. (LOGOS) ” (from the EFPIA) This evidence gave me physical proof of animal testing successes.
Where did I show persistence, preparation, and effective use of class time? Where could I improve?
I showed persistence, preparation and effective use of class time in most of the class times, I did a lot of research and tried my best. But, I think I could improve on getting into the mode more. Sometimes I’m reading, but my brain just doesn’t really cooperate, so I think I should take some brain breaks inbetween to just get the debate off my mind for a few minutes. I also think I should of put more time into practicing my script for the debate.
In what ways did my debate presentation effectively communicate my thinking? What would I change or improve if I had more time?
My debate presentation effectively communicated my thinking, it included all my important points supported with evidence and reasoning. If I have more time, I would have definitely practiced more with my script because I skipped a few parts due to the time.
What new skills did I gain during the debate preparation or the debate presentation?
Since I never debated before, this debate showed me what a real debate is like. It made me more confident and also less confident on my abilities. I realized that speaking up during a debate is very important, and I don’t have do depend on my partner just because she has debate experience.
1. What individual feedback did you see consistently? Glow/Grow?
I saw feedback about how I should practice debating more, and being more confident/talking more. A glow was how I have very good pacing.
2. What team feedback did you see consistently?
I saw a lot of feedback about how we should show more emotion, taking too much time on answering/giving questions.
3. Did the overall feedback map what you expected? Why/why not?
Yes, I think it made sense, but I think me and my partner both had a lot of emotion, we just didn’t get very fired up.
