Social Studies Unit 2 Reflection

  1. What did I work on?
  1. During this unit, ‘Why should we care about the past?’, I worked on
  1. Making observations, inferences and wonderings
  1. Using photos and articles as evidence
  1. Writing a CER paragraph
  1. Asking and answering open and closed questions
  1. Taking part in the Otzi Mock Trial, my role was prosecution lawyer number 3
  1. Why should we care about the past?
  1. We should care about the past because it tells us about the origins of humans and their culture.
  1. What worked well?
  1. I am proud of the following work my CER paragraph, research about Otzi the iceman and how I worked during the mock trial.
  1. I am proud of the work above because I put in efforts and I did great on all of my assignments.
  1. What did not work well?
  1. I found some of this work challenging, researching evidence of how Otzi was murdered, writing open-ended questions and consolidating knowledges about Otzi’s death.
  1. I found the work above challenging because it takes a lot of time and is complicated to do.
  1. Personal Relevance
  1. Collaboration and communications skills are important in my future because it can improve how I work effectively with others and these skills also enhance my vocab during active communication.

Balloon Car

Me and my partner created a balloon car using a piece of cardboard, two thin straws, on thick straw, four wheels, two sticks and, a balloon. The criteria for this is to build a car powered only by a balloon that can travel the farthest distance in a straight line. We also used hot glue guns, rubber bands and, tape to build the car.

Newtons first law of motion is when an object at rest tends to stay at rest and a object in motion tends to stay in motion un less the object is acted upon by an unbalanced force. A real life example is when I kick a ball and it rolls. Newtons second law is law of acceleration this law states the acceleration of an object with constant mass is proportional to the net force action on it and is in the same direction of the net force. An real life example of this is when I ride my bike the bike accelerates every time I ride it. Newtons third law states for every action theres an equal or opposite reaction. A real life example is when I shoot a gun the reaction is the bullet flying onto the target.

I struggle with making my balloon car go on a straight line and the design of my car. Our design was too weak and the wheels kept on getting stuck which makes the car go very slow. Another thing I struggle with is when the car broke and we have to tape the car over and over again. In the end our car broke in half and the tape fell of.

I think what we learn using the balloon car relates to the real world by making us understand how friction or forces work

EGG CAR REFLECTION

The egg car criteria is to design and build a car with a safety system that will deliver an egg safely down a ramp.

We see Newton’s third law in action with the egg car when the car hits the brick and the reaction is when the egg tries to fly out of the “seat”.

We see Newton’s first law in action when the car is moving down the ramp. The force acts on the brick which caused the car to stop in the end.

What worked well was the crumple zone and the seat belt for the egg because it protect the egg really well. We had to build a strong crumple zone that protects the egg from cracking.

The structure of the car was not successful because it was too weak and it broke easily. To solve this problem we tape the parts together but the wheels still broke.

It is important to know Newton’s law s because it is used to

• It is important to know Newton’s Laws because the science is used to develop a crumple zone or seatbelts in vehicle which to keep us safe. When a car hits the wall is the outside force thats moving it.

Art reflection

An art work I am proud of is my clay bald eagle I made it out of clay and I blend while making different parts of the eagle. One method I applied is carving and connecting different parts of clay together. I am very proud with my art work because it is the best clay piece i’ve ever made so far and it help me discover different ways to slip and score. While i’m building the eagle I discover how to hollow the clay out to make the clay lighter and dry faster.

Creative writing reflection

What are we doing ?Writing a fictional story based on a theme that matters to me.

What are we learning? Theme (my purpose for writing this story, my message to readers)

Character Development (creating believable characters with positive & negative traits)

Plot (the sequence of events in my story; Western and Eastern approaches to storytelling)

Setting (the world that I create for my story)

What’s working

I enjoy planning and writing the characters because each character has different elements and story behind them. I am proud of my plot because it is similar to my favorite book chainsaw man. I got my idea from a book made by Tatsuki Fujimoto the author of chainsaw man. My favorite line from my story is “For the New world”

Areas For Growth

The plot is the most challenging because it needs a lot of details and concentration. I solve these by thinking about different story i’ve read. My least favorite part is when I write the ending because I don’t want to end my story.

Personal Relevance

I think creative writing help me because I don’t really write a lot and it helps me think. I enjoy creative writeing because it lets me think carefully

Critical thinking-Gravittrax

Critical thinking is a problem solving skills.

I made a marble roller coaster which the marble glide down a track it self.

I struggle when the marble gets stuck in the middle of the way but eventually I solved that problem.

We manage to make the marble slide down the tracks smoothly without any troubles.

Today’s learning will help me understand more about gravity and how to build more and better structures.

I learned how to use a Gravittrax and how to build a marble coaster.

Fiction Reading – Character Analysis

What are we doing ?

Reading Demon Slayer series and determining important character traits

What are we learning?

How to analyze Character traits (Character Actions, Thoughts, Dialogue, and Other Characters’ Reactions)

What’s working

What’s working is when I was writing down my thoughts before thinking of some specific character traits. Another technique I use is I often read the characters page before analysis the traits of a main character. Another success is I did a great job on identifying character’s actions and dialogue

Areas For Growth

I need to summarize a more important character trait and identify the character’s thoughts. Also give more specific details for a character trait.

Personal Relevance

Analyzing fiction character traits helps me because I could relate to a character in the story and it also helps me contribute to challenges in my own life.

Unit 1 Olympic Portfolio Reflection

1. What did I work on?

a. During the campaign for the Olympic unit, I worked on researching our host Olympic city and country by using the SAS DATABASE. I worked on improving my speaking skills. I worked on my positive collaboration skills with my chosen partner. I also worked on using persuasive sentence frames to convince the IOC to select my host city/country. I worked on memorizing my script and speaking loudly. I worked on creating a presentation in Canva.

2.What did I learn?

I learned about why global sporting events exist and the history behind them. They exist to help countries all over the world unite and bring the host country’s economy.

3.What worked well? I think I did well on my presentation because I have enough persuasive language and sentences. I also done my script well and researched a lot about my host country.

4.What did not work well? I didn’t do well on presenting my presentation and writing my note cards. Because I got nervous and frustrated, I also didn’t practice my script a lot which makes me forget stuff in the presentation.

5.Personal Relevance this will help me in the future because I might need it later in my academic career such as high school, college, also 7th and 8th grade.

Nonfiction Writing Reflection – Paragraph Structure

What are we doing ? An academic paragraph about a character trait

What are we learning? Paragraph structure (topic sentence, Transitions, Conclusion)

What’s working

Before, I used bad topic sentences and lack of vocabulary word. But now I learned how to write a good topic sentences and a good paragraph structure using advanced vocabulary words.

Areas For Growth

I want to improve on my transition words and better details.

Personal Relevance

This is important because I will write more essay or academic paragraphs.

Welcome to Your New Portfolio!

Why have a digital portfolio at SAS?

Creating a portfolio, or blog is a great way to collect all the work you’ve done throughout your academic career. You can include academic, athletic, and personal artifacts or experiences that you want to share with a wider audience. This is a great way to organize all your learning in one place and you can take it with you when you leave SAS.  When you make your portfolio, you create posts that are categorized according to your subject. Some categories have already been set up for you, but if you need more categories you can add them as needed. It’s important that your posts have the following:
  • An engaging title – this should not include the name of the subject since this is referenced in the category. Think of this as the first opportunity to engage and hook your reader!
  • Body – this is where you share your learning. This should include a combination of text and media in the form of images, graphics, and embedded videos. You should always consider how your post looks to your audience. Is it engaging and organized? Do they want to keep reading?
  • Category – select one that has been set for you or add a new category. Posts can have more than one category e.g. Humanities and Myself as a Learner
  • Tags – create tags that can be used as keywords to describe your post. Tags help organize your post a little more! Aim to have 3-5 tags for each post. For example, if you are posting about a novel you wrote, you might want the following tags: #Fiction, #MurderMystery, #Theme, #PlotDiagram

Take a look at the images below to find a few helpful tips for creating your posts and using the block editor:
