Dystopian fiction – The Giver unit reflection

What did I do?

I learned about dystopian fiction by writing academic paragraphs and discussing topics collaboratively. We read the dystopian fiction book: The Giver. We also did many vocabulary tests where we write a short story and include the words that we learned from the book. We also did commonlit assignments for homework where we summarise and answer questions about the book.

What did I learn?

During this unit, I learned how to write academic paragraphs and answer questions about the book. Through many vocabulary tests, I built my vocabulary range and used more advanced words. I also learned to use transition words and how to do collaborative discussions.

What worked?

I completed all my commonlit assignments on time with transition words and good answers. I participated in a lot of discussions and I always knew the answer to the question. I understood the dystopian characteristics of a dystopian fiction book and I learned how to identify them without too much trouble. The Giver was also very fun and interesting to read and I always enjoyed the read alouds.

What did not work?

Sometimes during vocabulary tests, I would get a little stuck on how I would use the words I would pick. Sometimes I get confused about the word meaning and how to use a word in a sentence. During discussions, sometimes we would just talk over each other instead of acknowledging each others ideas.

Personal Relevance

Learning how to discuss with other people and acknowledge their ideas is very important because it will be very useful in the future when I am discussing with a research partner or a friend. It will help me be more productive when I am trying to express my ideas and make others feel like they matter. Writing academic paragraphs will also help me later on when I am writing an important essay for something. It can help me make my essay feel more professional and formal.

Addiction comic book reflection

What safety behaviours do you think are most important for you?

I thinking being cautious around strangers, being aware of your surroundings, and being in a safe place, are the most important safety behaviours to me.

Who are your five trusted people you can go to if you feel something isn’t right either online or in person?

My mom, my dad, my grandma, my grandpa, Ms. Dani.

How does Social Media and Technology impact teens the most in your oppinion?

I think that social media and tech affects teens the most by making them addicted to it. Nowdays almost everybody is glued to their technologies, especially teens, this affects their learning and concentration.

What stratagies can you use to help protect yourself in everyday life, online and in real life?

I think good stratagies are setting a good password, being in a safe environment, being aware of your surroundings, and not trusting strangers.

What would be the biggest takeaway you have?

The biggest takeaway I have is that I learned how technology can be harmful to your mental and physical health and how to avoid the harms.

Here is a social media comic strip that me and my partner made:

Here is some peer feedback that I got:

Rollercoaster L4 Lab and Model

What did we do?

We started by completing an investigation to determine the relationship between potential energy and the rollercoaster starting height. The data we got was that as the starting height increased, the potential energy also increased. We then used our data that we got in our investigation and made a small movie/video from Imovie. Here is the link to the video:

Soccer Reflection

What did you learn?

I learned how to pass the ball to a partner using the inner of my feet. I learned how to dribble a ball and shoot a goal. I also learned how to play a soccer game.

What helped?

Playing mini soccer matches withmy classmates helped my dribbling and passing skills. We also did drills practicing our passing skills with a partner, these drills improved my passing and dribbling.

What is something you are proud of?

I am proud of my soccer skills since I sucked at soccer before. I used to kick the ball with the tippy tip of my feet, but now I learned to kick the ball with the inside of my feet.

What is something you can work on?

I could work on my passing skills because even though I pass with the inner of my feet, sometimes the ball just goes flying or in some random direction. When shooting goals, sometimes I would completely miss or my ball would have no power in it, causing the goalkeeper to catch it very easily.

L3 Unit II Ötzi unit reflection

What did I work on?

I worked on a CER paragraph regarding how Otzi died. Whether he was murdered or not murdered. We also read various articles and watched many videos to gather information and evidence for our CER paragraph. We also answered many closed and opened questions. At the end of the unit red and gold did a mini mock trial regarding whether Otzi was murdered by another prehistoric man or not.

What did I learn?

I learned multiple facts and interesting things about Otzi’s death and his life. From reading many articles and watching many videos, I learned about the belongings that Otzi carried with him at the time of his death. For example, a copper axe, a stone dagger, a bear skin hat and many more. I also learned about the various health issues that Otzi had at that time. I also learned about open and closed questions and how to answer them in the best way.

What worked well?

My Otzi CER paragraph was made pretty well with enough evidence and reasoning. I was the expert witness at the mock trial, and I was able to answer all of the questions that the lawyers asked me (except for the ones that were not my area of expertise). My graphic organizers are fine, and I was able to understand and answer open and closed questions.

What did not work?

When researching about Otzi’s death, I was a bit confused about the information the articles and videos were giving me. Since one article said that Otzi bled to death by an arrow, but another article said that the arrow was not enough to kill Otzi. Lots of information and facts from different articles contradicted each other and made me very confused about what to put in my CER paragraph and what not to. I could improve next time by reading the articles more carefully and including the information that helps me in my CER paragraph.

Personal relevance

Practicing writing CER paragraphs and reading articles could help me later in school or work whenever I am going to write a persuasive essay about something. My teacher also mentioned that we will also be doing CER paragraphs in 7 grade and 8 grade along with the other subjects that I am learning, so practicing writing CER paragraphs right now is very important. Learning about open and closed questions can help me later when I am asking questions and I want to direct the conversation in some way. Practicing mock trials can help me later when I am doing mock trials in collage or actually attending a real trial.

Math bake sale reflection

What did we do?

We formed into groups of 1-3 and worked together to plan a math bake sale. We did worksheets regarding markup prices, material costs, income and profits. We then grouped together and baked or things and sold them at a bake sale for fake money. Me and my partners baked brownies.

What did we learn?

We learned about what a markup price is, and how salesmans determine their final sale prices. We learned how to use rates to solve problems that will help us in the bake sale. We also learned how to use cross multiply divide and precent proportions, strategies used to solve rate problems.

What worked?

We did pretty well on doing the math correctly and determining our batch price and our final sale price. Our brownies turned out pretty good and very delicious. We made a lot of money at the bake sale and everyone liked our brownies.

What did not work?

When calculating the material prices, we accidentally got the actual materials and the materials we wrote mixed up together. This caused us to readjust our prices in the middle of the bakesale and sometimes customers got confused. We also sometimes gave discounts to people so the data might not be that accurate.

Personal relevance

Learning about planing a sale and about rates might help me with future sales and math. The bakesale also practiced our patience and problems solving skills whenever something went wrong. This would help me in the future when I am doing something very challenging our calculating profits and incomes for a new business.

Swimming reflection

What did we learn?

We learned how to use snorkel hand signals and body language underwater to express different meanings. We learned the beach entry and the giant stride entry, these are two ways to enter the water with a snorkel on. We also learned how to use a snorkel and what to do when snorkeling.

What worked?

I understood the different hand signals that we use in snorkeling and used them correctly when snorkeling in the pool. I did the beach entry and the giant stride entry correctly. I also collaborated well with my swimming partner in snorkeling.

What did not work?

I sometimes forget to put the snorkel on my neck when getting out of the pool. Putting on the snorkel without it overflowing with water halfway and making sure it is tight is sometimes challenging. I also sometimes forget to do a partner check when doing the giant stride entry.

Egg car challenge reflection

What did I do?

Me and my partner built a car out of A4 paper and tape to protect a raw egg. We then dropped the egg car down a steep slope from the top of the classroom towards a concrete brick and observed wether the egg broke or not.

What did I learn?

I learned about the defenses and strategies car engineers use to protect a driver in a severe car accident. For example, crumple zones are zones at the front of the car that crumple easily to cushion the force of the impact. Seatbelts are also used to stop the driver from flying out of the car. We also learned about Newton’s 3 laws of motion.

What worked?

Our egg car was built pretty well and it did not fall apart when going down the slope. We added seatbelts and crumple zones to cushion the landing and to stop the egg from flying out. Our test runs with the fake eggs went pretty well.

What did not work?

Unfortunately, our raw egg did not survive the impact and got cracked against the concrete block. Me and my partner removed the rubber from the wheels to reduce the chance of the car flipping over but without the rubber it made the car run down really fast and caused the egg to crack. We also ran out of tape when building the car some parts are a bit loose at the end.

Personal relevance.

I now know about the safety systems of cars and how they work. This challenge also practiced my patience and perseverance. These things can help me in the future when I am doing more challenging projects like these. This knowlage about car safety can also help me when I am either driving a car or riding a car and I (hopefully not) get into a car accident.

Design Tech

Graphic design unit

Below is the ppt of the graphic design unit.

In the graphic design unit, we designed either a fridge magnet, earring, coaster, or key chain for a client of our choice. We design our product in Inkscape and then cut it out in plywood in a lazer cutter. I designed a ragdoll cat fridge magnet for my mom.

3d printing unit

Below is my ppt of the 3d printing unit.

In the 3d printing unit, we worked in goups of 6 to design a full set of custom chess pieces. We get to pick a theme for our chess pieces. Our theme is zodiac signs and I got to work on the knight chess piece and my zodiac is cancer.

Robotics unit

In the robotics unit we got to work on building robots in pairs. We built a robot that turns 90 degrees and comes back when it touches a wall. We also got to fight each other with sumo robots inside a special arena.

Creative writing reflection

What did we do?

Writing a fictional story based on a theme that matters to me.

What are we learning?

Theme (my purpose for writing this story, my message to readers) Character Development (creating believable characters with positive & negative traits) Plot (the sequence of events in my story; Western and Eastern approaches to storytelling) Setting (the world that I create for my story)

Whats working?

I enjoyed a lot of writing my own fantasy story. When learning about characters and themes, we also got to watch short videos to help us determine those things. I really like the fact that you get to choose your own fantasy theme and your own characters, it lets your imagination go wild.

What did not work?

I was a bit stumped on what I should write about in my fantasy story at first, it took me a long time to think of my characters and plot. I also did not get enough time to finish my story so it ends in a cliffhanger three quarters of the way through. I think that I need to add more detail to my story because I was rushing too much to get it finished in a few days.

Personal relevance

Practicing creative writing will help me later on in school and life whenever I am writing some kind of creative story. It also helps me find the protagonist, antagonist and supporting characters whenever I am reading a book. Creative writing made me think more about themes (the message in the book), what they mean and what the theme of my story is about.
