Vision Board Reflection

Goal Progress:

Some weeks, I achieved my goal and I was able to play the amount of time I wanted. Other weeks, I found myself procrastinating and I had a hard time playing more.

Challenges:
The main challenge was time. My time management skills aren’t the best and I had always had a hard time balancing the time I spent on each thing.

New Insights:
I used to think “better” just meant playing harder songs. Now I think “better” means playing with more feeling, or cleaner rhythm, even if it’s not a harder piece.
Also, practicing slowly actually helps more than rushing through. I didn’t get that in before this goal.

Accomplishments I’m Proud Of:
I can play some songs I used to think were impossible. And I feel like shifting positions while playing has become way easier so I’m pretty proud of how I grew in the past few months.

Revised Goal:
If I were to change my goal, I would change it into playing 30 more minutes of scales each day. After playing more pieces, I learnt that scales were also equally as important.

Support System:
My cello teacher helped a lot since he noticed when I improved and also called me out when I got lazy. My mom also helped me by supporting me when I was not feeling like playing cello.

Next Steps:

I’ll actually start practicing my scales more because I’ve noticed that a lot of playing techniques are used when playing scales.

Art Sketchbook Reflection

In my sketchbook design, I added things that matter to me, like music and the music artists I love. On the top left, I included a cello, as I spend most of my time after school playing it. Besides the cello, there are also music notes drifting across the notebook to echo the rhythm in my life. On the top right, I drew a stage with five people (the band I listen to constantly). I also put in musical symbols, like crescendo (meaning to grow louder), to deepen the theme. I also added a pencil to represent me as a writer. The carrot in the middle hints at another music artist that I love. In the middle, I placed a small stick figure of me because all these surrounding traits represents my story. After finishing the sketches, I felt the cover needed some color, so I added vibrant squiggles to express my energy. If I did this again, I would sketch a clearer plan from the start, because I don’t think my plan was detailed enough and I’d also try going with my plan and not changing my artwork at the last moment.

Unit 3 Math Reflection

What are we learning?
In this unit, we learned how to work with percentages in real-life situations, especially those involving money. We focused on calculating percent increase and decrease (like discounts during a sale) and how to add things like tax and tip to a total bill. We also learned about simple interest, which is calculated using the formula: Simple Interest = Principal × Rate × Time. This unit also helped me understand how money can grow in a savings account.

What did we do?
I worked a presentation about a banking. For my presentation, I researched how long it would take to earn my goal money by using simple interest if I put my savings in the bank. I had to research the interest rate for different banks, and I added the amount I had originally, and I calculated the time to reach the money needed.

What worked?
The final presentation project pretty fun and using word problems (real-life examples) in class (like shopping and dining) also helped the concepts make sense.

What didn’t work?
Sometimes it was tricky to remember all the formulas and rules such as tip before tax. I also had some time management problems so I had to work on my project at home too.

What will you redo if I could do this again?
If I could redo this unit, I would create a cheat sheet or something similar for myself so I could remember the formulas easier. For the presentation, I would practice my explanation more beforehand so I could talk about my calculations more confidently.

Overall, this unit was valuable because it taught me math I will actually use in my life, from shopping to saving for the future.

Unit 3 Science

What are we learning?
In this unit, we learned about the cell organelles and body functions. We learnt how they come together to form complex systems. First, we learn about the seven major body systems (like the digestive, circulatory, respiratory, nervous, muscular, skeletal, and immune systems). Then, we studied cell organelles, which are like the tiny organs inside each of our cells (like nucleus, mitochondria, ribosomes, lysosome, ER, cytoplasm, vacuole ETC…).

What did we do?
We did two main projects. First, we wrote a CER. My CER was about how cells and body systems work together to play soccer. We had to write a claim, research for evidence, and explain the reasoning that connects them. We also created a model of a cell with its organelles.

What worked?
The model project really worked for me. Building something made the parts feel easier to remember. Also, breaking down the CER helped me understand how to support my ideas with science facts, not just random guesses.

What didn’t work?
Sometimes, it was hard to remember all the organelles and all the body systems at once. For the CER, I struggled a little with the reasoning. I found it hard to explain why the evidence proves the claim was tricky.

What will you redo if you could do this again?
If I could do this unit again, I would organize my notes better from the start. I’d make a chart or a table to list each organelle and system with its function, so I wouldn’t have to search through my notebook later.

Social Studies Visual Presentation Reflection

What did you learn?

In this unit, I learnt many ways to show my understanding of how the telegraph impacted the U.S society.

What did you work on?

I worked on showing how the telegraph changed the U.S society by making a visual presentation about the telegraph. It was the first time I used a shoebox to create a project and I enjoyed the process of making a shoebox.

What worked?

Decorating the shoebox worked a lot and I had a lot of fun adding text to my box. Designing my shoebox also worked pretty well and my box ended up better than I expected it to be like.

What didn’t work?

Time management was a huge problem for me because I did not complete the work I wanted to complete in the given amount of time. At first, I wanted to create 3 shoeboxes to show 3 scenes. The positive impact, negative impact, and solutions to the negative impacts. But I ended up only have enough time to create 1 box. I had spent too much time staring into blank spaces and I spent too much time cutting the cardboard box. I spent 1 and a half classes cutting a cardboard box into 3 pieces and 2 pieces ended up in the trash can anyways. I also spent A LOT of time creating the telegraph model and it took me about 2 classes creating the board of the telegraph. The board ended up looking pretty weird so I used paper to cover the board in the end.

What changes would you make if you could redo this project?

If I could redo this project. I would manage my time better by writing a schedule of what I’d do each class. I’d also stick to my original plan. If I didn’t finish the work I planed, I’d stay in during lunch to finish rather than to just change the plan.

ELA Effective Collaborator Reflection

How are you an effective collaborator?

I’m an effective collaborator because I’ve learnt to pay attention to those around me and I’ve also learnt to collaborate in group projects. For example, if I’m the first one to arrive at our table, I’d grab everyone’s notebooks and folders. I also collaborated with Kristyna when we had to create a dystopian story. We had to brainstorm the setting, the characters, and the plot together and we had a lot of fun doing that. We combined some ideas and our story ended up pretty fun.

How can you improve as an effective collaborator?

I can improve as an a collaborator by speaking up more. I need to get better at sharing my thoughts out loud in the moment even if I’m not totally sure my idea is right. I can try to add to what someone else said or ask a question that helps our group. I can also try give eye contact when I’m asking questions or just simply having a conversation.

Unit 2 ELA Summative

How do you think your summatives compared to your formatives?

I think that I did much better on my formatives for both my CERER and my outline. For my CERER formative about windows and mirrors, I got a 3 and I included a claim, 2 evidences and 2 reasonings that went along with the evidence. But for my summative I didn’t understand the story and I confused the main conflict with the side conflict. I also did better on my round and dynamic character formative than my summative. When I was writing my outline summative, I did not proof read my work and I ended up submitting a summative with a wrong definition of round and dynamic characters.

What are you proud of?

I am proud that I collected useful evidence when I was writing my CERER and I am also proud that I added a summary of my story in my outline that I’m satisfied with.

What were some challenges for you?

For my CERER I had trouble deciding which conflict I should write about and I ended up choosing the wrong conflict. Our class worked on the story ‘Harrison Bergeron’ and I claimed that the MAIN conflict of the story was an external struggle between George and the government’s handicaps. The actual main conflict was an external struggle between Harrison and the government and what I wrote was actually the SIDE conflict. For my story outline, I had trouble thinking of traits that decided my main character and I ended up choosing some feelings instead of traits to describe my main character.

If you could redo the summative assessment, what changes would you make?

If I were to redo the summative, I would make changes to both my CERER and outline. For my CERER I would change my claim and write about the main conflict of the story, I’d also add some more detailed reasoning. For my outline, I’d change the characteristic traits and I would also change my explanation of how Catty’s (the character) traits describe her as a round/dynamic character.

What advice would you give yourself for Unit 3?

PROOF READ ASSIGNMENTS!!! For unit 3 I would want myself to proof read assignments before submitting them so I won’t make silly mistakes.

Social Studies Essay Writing Reflection

What did you learn?

In this unit, I learnt how to write a detailed essay on how technology impacted the society. I learnt the steps of creating an essay and it was more complicated than I thought it would be. Besides writing, we also learnt about the importance of finding credible cites to research with.

What have you worked on?

We wrote an essay that explained the importance of technology to the society. The first step was to choose a topic, I chose to write about the telegraph and its impact on the U.S. society. After choosing a topic, we researched about it. We learnt the importance of finding a credible website and we researched the negative/positive impacts our topic brought to the society. We also researched about those who helped resolve these negative impacts and after researching we were ready to draft. There was a template we could use and there were also sentence starters that made writing paragraphs easier. After finishing drafting, we got peer feedback from our classmates and our peers gave us information that helped us make our work better.

What worked?

Writing a claim worked for me because I found it easy to answer the main question (How did the telegraph have an impact on the U.S society) clearly.

What didn’t work?

Researching about my technology was difficult and I had trouble finding credible articles. When I started researching the impacts of the telegraph, I couldn’t find any information I wanted. I found long and complicated articles but the articles I found only focused on the history and basic facts about the telegraph but I wanted information about what the telegraph brought to the society. So after checking with Mr. Tyner and my peers, I changed my browser and I tried searching with different browsers with different key words and at the end, I was able to get articles I wanted.

If you could redo this unit what would you change?

If I were to redo this unit, I would work on time management. Throughout the unit, I had a hard time focusing and I wasted a lot of time talking and searching with wrong key words. I barely did anything the first 2 classes and I had to do more work in the 3rd and last class and I ended finishing my research notes at home. So if I were to redo this project, I’d work more and talk less.

Artistic Swimming Reflection

For this unit we worked on artistic swimming and being safe. This unit was honestly better than I expected and it turned out pretty fun. The biggest challenge for me was the sculling. My legs wanted to sink, and I had choked a lot of water. But our teacher broke it down into small steps and we had rotations which helped me a lot. I also learned how important teamwork was for this sport. For our final short routine, my group and I had to create a small sequence together. We had to talk it out, plan it, and encourage each other but we it was hard finding a time to practice together. One member went to a competition while the other was unable to swim, we had to be flexible and we tried our best. If I was to do the unit again, I’d work on time management and sculling 🙂

Using The D.E.C.I.D.E Model

What we did: We presented a skit and we created a poster to show our understanding of the DECIDE model. Our skit and poster was about stopping our cousin from using nicotine pouches.

What we learnt: We’ve learnt how to cooperate DECIDE model in our normal lives if someone offers a vape or drug of some sort. DECIDE stands for define, explore, consider, identify, decide, evaluate.

What was working: Research went well without computers because using computers were distracting.

What didn’t work: Presenting didn’t work because we were embarrassed
