Dystopian Fiction The Giver

What did I do?

I learned about Dystopian fiction by writing academic paragraphs related to the text.

What did I learn?

Building vocabulary and writing academic paragraphs and doing collaborative discussions. Using transition words.

What worked?

What worked is the discussion because we were able to collaborate together and talk about what we thought about the Giver book

What didn’t work?

I could’ve been better at using transition words because I wasn’t sure when to use it and I felt that I was not very good at using transition words. Also my notes were illegible

Personal Relevance

Learning about Dystopian fiction can be helpful in the future because maybe dystopian fiction is actually going to exist so it might be helpful in what we know also maybe some things we learned in the book can help in the future.

Math Bake Sale Reflection

What did I do?

We did multiple things including a bake sale. During the bake sale we sold things for money (fake) we had to communicate to the customers and we also had to talk about the process and what we did and the price per batch and price overall. We also had to plan out when we were going to bake before the bake sale

What did I learn?

I learned about unit rates and math calculations of rates and ratios we also did calculations for the price per serving and per batch and what we needed for the amount of ingredients. After the bake sale we made 79 RMB in profit and we were able to make more than most of the other stands.

What worked

What worked is the math part of the project because we were able to cooperate and get the answers together and we were able to figure out waht to do and what ingredients we needed for a successful cake.

What didn’t work

What didn’t work was the time that we had to arrange because we all had different schedules so it was hard to arrange a time where all of us had time to bake the cake also we weren’t sure when the bake sale was so we accidentally did it early.

Personal Relevance

Learning about rates and ratios can be of big help in my future career as it can help me calculate the money and amount of something which is helpful because then it helps us put a set price that we deem worthy.

Unit II Otzi Unit Reflection

What did I learn?

I learned about why we should care about the past and how the past helps us. I learned that the past gives us valuable insights into things because it shows what we originally did and how we should change it to be better or how we did things that were not good and how we should change it to be better. Learning about the past is like reflecting on something we learn what we did wrong and we change.

What did I do?

I did many things including a mock trial about Otzi and many other things related to his life. Firstly, we learned about Otzi and researched about him then we learned why he was so special and how he was killed. Secondly, we were split into different groups to do a mock trial about how he was killed I was split into attorney but there were two other choices being an eyewitness or a court reporter. We also worked on CER writing and what this meant and how to write a proper one.

What Worked?

What worked was when we did the mock trial because we prepared for a long time and even though we didn’t win the mock trial, it was still fun, and I felt that I did well and was able to go against the other team that was trying to prove he wasn’t murdered. I think that the research about Otzi also helped us a lot in preparing for a big project. Another thing that worked is the open and closed questions as I was good at understanding them.

What didn’t work?

What didn’t work was that I could have done better research before we did the mock trial as I didn’t have enough evidence therefore I couldn’t counterargue as well. Another thing is the CER as I wasn’t sure what to write and wasn’t good with evidence. I think I could’ve improved my opening speech for the mock trial as I didn’t really explain the evidence, and that might’ve been the cause of us losing.

Personal relevance

This helps in life as if we learned how to reflect well, and we did a mock trial which could help if we ever go to court (unlikely). Learning more about the past helps us because we learn how to reflect on what happened in the past and how we can change to be better. This also shows reflecting on what you did is good even if it is something small and you think irrelevant. Everything can cause a change in life, even the tiniest of turns changes where your life is headed.

Egg Car challenge

What did I do?

The criteria of the Egg Car challenge was to make a Egg Car that would ensure the eggs safety with only three pieces of A4 paper, 1 meter of tape, and 4 wheels and axles. The Egg Car had to be able protect the egg from even the tiniest crack.

What did I learn?

I learned that that Newtons laws can be seen in everyday life and that even in accidents newtons laws are still there for example we learned that when a car hits a wall the wall pushes back with an equal and opposite force this is because of Newtons third law of action-reaction. My partner and I made a box for our base and it worked out pretty well we weren’t sure if it would work as we didn’t have time to test it before we had to actually use an egg. Another example of what we learned is when we added the egg we realized that the inertia of the car with the egg would be much more as the more mass an object has the more inertia it has so we had to remove the rubber wheels or the friction would be too much. Lastly we learned how the more mass the car had the more force required to move it so we added crumpled pieces of paper into the seat but sadly the more force we put the more force is pushed back on us so our egg cracked.

What worked

Some things that worked was our prediction of how much resources we needed and we managed to save a lot of resources for the important parts of our Egg Car. Another thing that worked out was when we were able to stick the crumple zone to a protective layer of paper on the outside and we were able to keep the car in one piece.

What didn’t work?

What didn’t work was when we actually put the egg in the car as it was much heavier than we expected and the our car wasn’t made to carry that force so it made our car slump down also our crumple zone didn’t work out as well as we wanted it to.

Personal Relevance

This relates to my life as we learned what happens if a crash happens and we learned about how Newtons laws are always true even in real life this connects what we learned to my personal life as it helps me understand more about what is happening in real life.

Ballon cart Investigation Reflection

What did I do

The balloon cart was built using styrofoam and a few axels. We used it to learn about Newtons laws. The criteria of this investigation was to help us learn about Newtons laws and to help us understand more while having fun we also learned about how Newtons laws worked and were in our lives all along and that Newtons laws are all true. We also did many experiments with the balloon cart such as adding mass so we could test if Newtons second law was true and even though the results were weird most of it was still correct.

What did I learn

Newtons 1st law says that “an object at rest tends to stay at rest and an object in motion tends to stay in motion unless acted upon by another unbalanced force”. We see this in our everyday life as whenever you are on a car and it suddenly stops you get thrown forward because your inertia is not as much as other peoples more mass=more inertia. Newtons second law states that “an objects mass is equivalent to its force times acceleration (F=ma)”. We see this whenever we are on a car or other vehicle as more force is required to move something with more mass for example if somebody tries to push a sofa by themselves it might not be enough force but if there are more people than the amount of force will be enough.Newtons third law tells us about how “every action has and equal and opposite reaction”. This also happens in our everyday life but as nobody really notices because most don’t know that this applies to every thing as if I push on a sofa it pushes back with the same amount of force.

What worked?

Creating the car went well because me and my partner worked together and collaborated well also it was fun with somebody else to do it with we tried new ideas and at the end we were able to get 2nd in the race. We had to make adjustments to our car as their was a lot of errors and most things didn’t work we also had to adjust our design so that it was faster.

What didn’t work?

It was a struggle when we had to fix our car too many times and when our car had many places where it was kind of broken for example our wheels kept on falling off and it caused our car to turn and bump into the sofa which caused us to lose in the final part of the balloon cart race. To solve this problem we used some tape and tried to make adjustments and improvise at last our car lasted pretty well copared to some of the other cars.

Personal relevance

The balloon cart helped our critical thinking and imagination skills as we had to create it with many constraints and we had to improvise a lot in the real world this could help us when we are older and have to work as we could think critically and make up solutions even if temporary on the spot. I see newtons law being useful in the real world as most jobs require calculations and if I knew the science behind the things and knew how things worked this would help me a lot when doing things that required me to know things.

What I did in Art

Firstly I made a pinch pot when we did the materials unit and I also made some random shapes like coils and spheres then we worked in plaster and I made kind of a random shape butI thought it would be funny if I made it a golden chicken leg so I named it chicken leg. We also worked in cardboard where me and some of my other peers made a mini apartment with a bunk bed, tv, sofa, and kitchen. I made a plaster project for my final artwork.

This is my artwork:

Swimming Unit Reflection

What did I do:

In this unit I did multiple things including learning how to snorkel and multiple strokes including freestyle, backstroke, and breath stroke. We also learned how to enter the beach property properly and beach safety. We also learned how to paddle.

What did I

Critical Thinking Activity in Science

What did I do?

I used my critical thinking skills to complete challenges with Indi robot cars and build rollercoasters with Gravitrax.

What did I learn?

I learned about how I would be graded for Critical Thinking. Critical Thinking is my ability to solve my problems and make the right decisions.

What worked?

What worked was that me and my team worked together and cooperated well we also made the Indi robot do the puzzles really well for example 14 we didn’t know 5 of the pieces but we were still able to figure it out.

What didn’t work?

Nothing didn’t work because I am big brain

Personal Relevance

I think that this will help me in life as if I want to learn more about forces I will already know the basics of it and it helps our brains grow as we are thinking critically.

Unit 1 – Campaign for the Olympics Reflection

What did I work on?

During this unit we worked on multiple things I think the thing we worked on the most was the script and presentation where we introduced our city and country to a “I.O.C” member and presented our reasons why we think that our city and country should host the Olympics. My partner and I made a presentation about Oslo, Norway and I think it went well.  We also worked on the script for the presentation where we had to write about our evidence and use the major 4 SAS databases, we mostly used Britannica, Culture grams, Statista, and Our world in data. We wrote about our reasons for why we thought that Oslo, Norway and supported it with evidence that we thought of without the use of any more databases.

What did I learn?

During this unit I learned many things including how to prepare a presentation and how to make a presentation. One thing I learned was how to make a presentation I learned how to prepare for it by doing the script which helped me a lot during the presentation also we learned how to use databases efficiently and responsibly we also learned about our country a lot as we had to do a lot of research on our place.

What worked?

I think what worked out well was the presentation time as I got an exceeding and I didn’t look at my notes often which I am proud of also I didn’t read out the presentation and my fluency was great as I didn’t  stutter or mumble only using filler words when I couldn’t remember what I was talking about and even then I mostly just paused to think not just saying random words to fill up the silence. I also feel proud that I prepared my presentation well as I practiced at home and I didn’t mess anything up when I met the “I.O.C” member.

What didn’t work?

Something that didn’t work out as well was my script as I was hurrying too much and didn’t notice the many small errors also in the presentation, I repeated persuasion too much and I think the fact I didn’t get a bad grade because of that is a miracle I also think that the presentation was not the best that I could’ve done as I made many mistakes while doing it and I forgot a lot of things.

Personal Relevance

I feel that the skills we learned this unit is important for the future because if we don’t learn how to make and prepare for a presentation and don’t do hands on work in the future we might not be able tom work on important business presentations which could cause your company a huge loss and while presenting might seem useless now it is a very important skill to learn and practice early on in life.
