1. Describe your story and what real-life situation it modeled?

Our story was about Johnny, an employee’s annual income throughout his years working at the company called “The 67”. Our model represented his overall increasing annual income, increasing until the 4th-5th year working at the company, and lastly when he gambled all his money away.

2. What part of your project are you most proud of? Why?

I’m most proud of how clearly I explained what each slope means in my graph and how it connects to the story. In my example, every slope shows how Johnny’s income changes over time. For instance, during the “As an Intern” stage, the slope of 25,000 means Johnny’s income goes up by $25,000 each year at a steady rate. When the slope is 0 in the “Official Worker” stage, it shows that his income stays the same for that year. In the “Gambling” stage, the negative slope of –60,000 shows that his income is decreasing, which makes sense in the context of the story. I also pointed out that the steepest slope is during the “Senior Developer” stage, meaning that’s when Johnny’s income increases the most.

I’m also proud of how I explained why slope-intercept form works best for this problem. In this form, the slope shows how much Johnny’s income changes each year, and the y-intercept shows his starting salary. That makes the graph and equation easy to understand right away. Compared to point-slope form, slope-intercept form is simpler and more direct, since you don’t need extra steps to interpret what the equation is telling you.

3. What was the hardest part of creating your piecewise function?

The hardest part was managing my time. There were a lot of parts to this project, and it was easy to spend too much time on one section and then feel rushed on the others. If I improved my time management and had a clear idea on when the deadline is, I would have finished the project with less stress.

4. If you could revise one part of this project, what would you improve and how?

If I could revise one part, I would improve how clearly I labeled and explained each interval on the graph. I would add more clearer notes or annotations directly on the graph to make it easier to see which part of Johnny’s career each line represents and why the slope changes.

5. What did this project help you understand better about piecewise functions?

This project allowed me to strengthen my understanding about piecewise functions on basically every aspect of it. It had a well rounded requirement on our understanding of eg. slope, intercepts, and different formulas on equations of the function. Overall, the projected bettered my ability to deal with piecewise functions.

Health U3 Reflection

The purpose of our U3 project was to analyze an unhealthy relationship that’s portrayed by the media, to analyze characteristics of unhealthy relationships. The media portrayal we chose was Family Guy, with the unhealthy relationship between Peter and Lois. From our analysis, we drew the conclusion that Peter and Lois had an extremely unhealthy relationship because of constant conflicts, demonstrating traditional stereotypes, lack of communication, violating each other’s boundaries, and lack of consent when performing actions.

Some of the most important ideas I learned this unit was:
1. the different characteristics that demonstrated red flags in an relationship.
2. What consent is and why it’s important
3. Gender stereotypes in modern day

Health U2 Reflection

My old thinking around common mental health issues as OCD or addiction were actually following the common mistaken stigma around them. For example, because of the influence from media or movies, I did think people can overcome or snap out of issues as depressions when they wanted to.

Media and shows were a significant factor that contributed to my misconception. For example, in many storylines, a character may face a crisis and, through sheer determination or a pivotal conversation, suddenly emerge from their depression. This narrative neglects the reality that mental health issues often involve biological, psychological, and social factors that cannot be resolved through willpower alone.

However, now I think and know the true accurate causes, risk factors, and impacts of common mental health illness as depression. I learned that many mental health conditions may be caused by genetic factors from your family, and external environment can greatly contribute to it. Furthermore, after the unit, I realized the need to show more care and inclusivity to ones suffering from mental illness, and to protect them and provide extra support.

Semester 1 Active Learner Reflection

My goal is to turn in all my homework and class work and assignments on time. I have made quite well progress towards my goal, as until now, I have submitted all my work for science on-time.

I’m most proud of myself showing persistence when faced with hard topics as waves, and adapting fast to the new model rules.

My biggest challenge still would be understanding hard topics even though I persisted through them, this affects my ability to stay focus in class.

I show persistence in class when faced with tough challenges, this goes along the lines of staying positive.

U1 Sticker Project

I really liked this project because it allows me to showcase my creativity and design my sticker as I wish. Furthermore, I also liked this project because it had plenty of flexibility within and I can have really great freedom of the allocation of my time.

I wish the project could have provided a longer amount of time to work on it, as it’ll allow us to create better and more detailed designs.

Unit 1 Reflection and Goal Setting

I chose question one as evidence of my best thinking because I realized my mistake at the end of the test and went back and revised question 1 correctly.

I chose the L4 section’s question 1 as evidence of my best thinking because I effectively and well proven the congruence between the triangles, while being specific and not having any mistakes.

Throughout this unit, I improved the most at naming angles or shapes. At the beginning of the unit and throughout when I worked on my sticker project, I mistakenly named angles and shape with lowercase letters which I later on learned as incorrect. However, throughout my summative, I correctly named shapes and angles with uppercase letters, which demonstrated by growth and improvement.

I feel that I still need to work on being chill and not stressing at the near end of the test’s time. I over stressed significantly at the end and it led to me fumbling over the last question of the L4 section.

List three of your strengths so far this year.

  1. Translations of figures, as I feel comfortable translating shapes with rigid transformations and dilations.
  2. Proving triangle’s congruence, as I was able to successfully finish every question regarding triangle congruence correctly on the test.
  3. Writing correct notations for translations, as I did not have any mistakes on my summative test regarding small mistakes on notations.

What I can improve during the next unit
  1. Notations – accuracy on my work, for example, when do I put the segment symbol above figures.
  2. Push myself more, by completing challenges when opportunities come.

 7.    Create an academic goal by completing the sentences and answering the questions.

In the next unit, I want to challenge myself more by completing even optional practices, and holding on to opportunities that challenge me when it comes.

However, my laziness and time organization may get in the way of completing this goal, but I can try to overcome such struggles by prioritizing challenging myself before other tasks. For example, choose to finish optional practices for math before scrolling on social media. Furthermore, I can try to use my planner or notes to allocate my time so that I leave time for challenges in math.

If I get stuck or need help, I can reach out to my parents or Ms Baldwin for support or guidance, which can definitely help me significantly.

ELA U1 First Contact

During unit one, we were focusing on the learning of grammar through a role playing activity around having first contact with an alien that landed on earth. I learned plenty throughout the unit, from basic parts of speech, as conjunctions or prepositions, to shades of meaning.

I had the most growth from learning about shades of meaning. Shades of meaning refers to “the different meanings of a word”, with denotation being the literal definition meaning and connotation being the implicit, cultural, or hinted meaning of the word. Before the unit, I had no understanding at all about shades of meaning, but I now completely understand the basics of shades of meaning.

WOOP Goal

Based on my WOOP goal, the app Structured would help me achieve my wish of being more organized by keeping my desk clean. This is because Structure can act as a calendar to keep reminding me if I do not clean my desk, and help me plan ahead of when I would like to start to clean. Even more, I’ll likely be more organized because Structured has a “checking off” function, which brings gratification when I do finish cleaning my desk and “check off” the task.

Three measurable outcomes after around a week of use of the app Structure would be; 1. I have a clear and clean space to work and study, 2. my books and notebooks are stacked and organized on the side, and 3. Random paper and useless junk is either thrown away of organized into drawers.

Some baseline wellness metrics related to my goal could be the wellness compass scale on organization, I could complete my organization section on the wellness compass again, and that will allow me to measure my growth. Furthermore, I could visually see how clean and organized my desk may be after around a week, which offers a clear comparative when I look at the before and after pictures of my desk.

Part 2:

Structure’s core feature for supporting my goal of cleaning my desk on a daily basis is that it helps me plan out and organize my time that I can organize my table. Structure acts as a calendar and keeps me on track for my goal.

I used the calendar the most often as it helps me the most by mitigating the biggest challenge for me, being stalling and procrastinating before I finally do finish my task if I even start.

Structure claims that it is/can “Enhance time management with Structured, the top digital planner. Merge calendars, manage tasks, and boost productivity with the best planner app.” From my experience, the claim and promise seems somewhat over-exaggerated, especially parts where it claims itself as the “best planner app”. However, Structured has enhanced by productivity by keeping me planned, especially keeping me on track with my goal.

Nonetheless, the app still have certain limitations. For example, the app’s calendar feature only helps me when I actively choose to open up the app. If I completely forget about my goal, the app is unable to remind me to keep me on track. It would be greatly more helpful if Structured could add a message reminder feature for my planned goals. The message could act as a cue for my brain to incentivize myself to finish my task.

In Part 1, I used the Wellness Compass’s scale to assess my organization skills and initially scored 44. After approximately two weeks of using the Structured app, I retook the assessment and achieved a self-reported score of 64. This proves the effectiveness of Structured, being able to effectively improve my organization of my life.

My hypothesis for part 1 was that the app Structured would help me achieve my wish of being more organized by keeping my desk clean, and based on the comparison of my two test results, the improvement of 20 points surely indicates that the hypothesis was effectively support.

Structured at the same time also brought some unintended behavior changes to me. When Structured kept me on track of cleaning my desk, I was also reminded to do my work, as it encouraged me to think what else I have to do that day. I ended up being able to be more productive, which was what I did not expect.

The app Structured can effectively support people of different jobs, demographics, and lifestyles. For example, Structured can help students plan ahead for tasks, homework, or make efficient study plans. It can help professionals and workers enhance workplace productivity and work-life balance, or help parents coordinate family activities. The app can effectively reduce overwhelming feelings, encourage consistent exercise, and ultimately support users with their own personalized different wellness goals.

Some designs that Structured have in place include the calendar function, which keeps user on track and encourages continuous practices of their goals. This function is a win-win function for both the developers of the app and the users, as it allows users to better achieve what they have planned while increasing usage of the application, that in turns generates profit for the developers.

The profit structure of Structured is selling and advertising a subscription based upgrade plan. Structured constantly sends out advertisement and encouragements for users to sign up for the VIP subscription plan within the app. This certainly impact’s it’s design choice, as it encourages Structured to lock away certain beneficial, crucial, and useful features from users that are enrolled with the free version. This decreases the enjoyability and functionality of the application for free users.

It’s unlikely for users to truly “depend” on Structured, as it simply offers a calendar to remind users of their tasks and functions as a to-do list. The calendar is not at a addictive level to truly make users dependent at it, and users likely will not even need the calendar as a planner after they make their healthy lifestyles a crucial habit a part of their life.

Health U1 Teen’s brain

In this unit, we were learning about the differences between the teen’s brain and the adult’s brain, stress resilience+coping mechanisms, and emotional regulations. The most important thing I learned during the unit was about the amygdala, hippocampus, and the pre-frontal cortex. I learned that the amygdala’s primary function is to keep you safe, the hippocampus is involved during the process of learning and storing memories, and the pre-frontal cortex in for us to make smart and logical choices. Furthermore, I learned that the biggest difference between a teen’s brain and an adult’s brain is how developed the pre-frontal cortex is. Adults have a fully developed pre-frontal cortex, where the teen brain’s PFC is only semi-developed.

Learning about brain science, especially our brain’s response to stress, has significantly improved how I deal with my emotions and make choices under stress. When I know about what’s going on during these scenarios, I’m more able to make the best choice when I’m in them and get the most beneficial outcomes.

Furthermore, we also learned about instant gratification and delayed gratification, along with coping mechanisms for stress. The additional knowledge greatly improved my capability of dealing with issues in my life.

The most surprising thing I learned about the teen’s brain is that emotions often override logical thinking during decision making, due to the different levels of development of the parts of brains that’s involved in decision making.

If adults also understand how the teen brain functions, it would greatly improve communication and understanding between them. For example, if the adult gets disappointed at the teen’s choices, they understand better why they made the choice, and the teen is simply more understood while the choice is more accepted.

The best stress resilience mechanism for me would be taking a walk, I think I could put that into my calendar by planning regular weekly walks in my compound on weekends.
