Integrated Mathematics 8 Semester 1

1. Active Learner Habits

-One strength I bring to math class is active participation.

-Another strength I bring is hardwork.

-A third strength I bring is being an effective collaborator.

Area of Growth

-One habit I want to improve this semester is trying not to get distracted in class.

-This is an area of growth for me because I talk to peers to often and time passes really fast.

Plan for Growth
Explain how you will work on improving this habit.

Example sentence starters:

– I will work on this habit by motivating myself to finish the classwork (+everyone else at the table) before talking.

– One specific action I will take is working hard in class to make sure I can finish the work.

2. Math Notation and Communication

Reflection:

My math improved since I have been trying harder and learning many new key concepts.

  • Over time, my math notebook shows how I can show my work clearer.
  • My math organization has stated the same overall.

3. Evidence of Understanding of Key Concepts

Reflection:

My math has improved through my willingness to do math and my overall skill level. Learning many new things such as transformations, congruence, linear relationships, functions, and now powers.

Sketchbook Design

Creating my sketchbook cover was a meaningful way to express who I am. I included K-pop group logos because they represent my love for music and the community I enjoy. The characters Madoka and Bachira Meguru reflect my interest in storytelling and creativity.

For the design, I chose bright colors like pinks, greens, browns, and hints of blue to create an inviting look. I layered the logos and characters to add depth, placing the elements all over the artwork to create a balance showing that I love my interests equally. I wanted the audience to engage with the layout by guiding their eyes through the design. The arrangement highlights the important elements and invites viewers to connect my interests to my overall identity. The Instagram post format also reflects how I am an open and sociable person, further emphasizing my identity in an artistic way. Overall, this sketchbook cover serves as a reflection of my identity and interests.

Designing a Story Problem

The story problem my partner and I designed modeled a ‘Friendship Level’ between friends as the day goes on. If something they both felt good about happened, then the level would increase.

I am most proud of being able to identify each interval of increase and information about each one of them.

I think the hardest part may have been drawing the graph since we had to be careful about making sure the lines were accurate and lined up with what we wrote in the story.

If we could revise a part, I think we could have made the story more clear. If the story were clearer, there would be 0 issues with understanding how the story and the lines match up.

This project helped me understand piecewise functions more since I was able to learn to graph them and identify each part of the piecewise. Learning through the project was more helpful than some practices in class (in my opinion)

Identity and Healthy Relationships

The purpose of the project was to choose a relationship and identify the healthy and unhealthy aspects and what could be done to improve this and make further conclusions about this relationship. In this project my group analyzed Beck and Jade and we found out that a relationship can not last with only attraction. They both love each other but constantly do things that make the other angry or uncomfortable.

The most important ideas I found to be are:

-being able to identify red flags, neutral and green flags

-communication in relationships is essential

-media portrayals are often inaccurate (for relationships)

-identity is a complex thing, made up of sexuality, gender, sex, and many of your own feeling and experiences

PE Swimming Reflection (Water Polo)

In this unit we mainly focused on playing water polo games. Since we had already covered basic swimming techniques in 6th grade we can do something more complicated now. We first learned the basic rules such as only one arm for holding the ball and sometimes the ball needs to be reset. Initially, I struggled with the fast pace and the need to constantly tread water. Personally I think it was actually surprisingly fun although it was super tiring. I think it was fine overall but in the future I hope that we can play more games rather than doing regular swimming to warm up since I feel that it can be tiring and sometimes kind of useless…

Social Studies Debate Reflection

1. What individual feedback did you see consistently? Glow/Grow?

Speak clear but needs more emphasis and needs to slow down. Needs to have more eye contact and has needs more clarity. I think I could have worked on this by making a more through script and practicing speaking with eye contact even more even though I did alot.

2. What team feedback did you see consistently?

Overall it was pretty much the same but mainly that the reasoning was good and the theme was not super clear. This shows I need to focus on making my main message stand out more.

3. Did the overall feedback match what you expected? Why/why not?

It kind of matched what I expected. I think their feedback was okay but I think I did a bit better than what people said. But I will still take their feedback very happily.

Unit 2 Portfolio

I used to think mental illnesses were something that could be overcome easily with a new mindset, but I learned that it is far from the truth. Many mental illnesses can completely destroy or have a huge impact on one’s quality of living. I had many conceptions about different illnesses at first but through these presentations I learned much more about mental disorders, causes and symptoms of them.

Now that I know more I think that mental illnesses are a serious issue and need to be treated with kindness and respect. People with illnesses should not be wrongly potrayed or thought of less since they have these illnesses. Media should consider the way they are potraying mental illnesses more. My perspective was changed and I greatly believe that people with mental illnesses should feel open to discuss their feelings with others. They should be able to have an enviroment that they can discuss it freely in. And society, should not simply say such casual things about disorders such as “I have _____” or lie or make inaccurate claims if they don’t have this mental illness, as it can harm people who do.

For example during the eating disorder presentation I learned more about different types of eating disorder and not all eating disorders stem from body image. One thing that suprised me was that depression isn’t easily seen in people and usually one of your friends who you might think is fairly happy may also have depression as shown in their visual representation. My thinking changed since I think the classmates and I all showed our understanding of this topic throughly and this helped us be able to comprehend each others presentations. This knowledge will affect how I behave towards mental illnesses in the future, such as taking it more seriously.

Sticker Project Math

I liked this project since I was able to be creative but I found it to be bit of a hassle and it seemed to be boring since I had to write out all the statements which wasn’t necessary to show my learning. (in my opinion!)

Unit 1 Reflection and Goal Setting

1.    I chose question 5 as evidence of my best thinking because I was able to identify the theorems and I used correct notations.

2.    I chose question 8 as evidence of my best thinking because I was able to perfectly find the congruent triangles using the evidence provided.

3.    Throughout this unit, I improved the most at mapping on a graph and how to use correct language on describing a graph.

4.    I feel that I still need to work on using a ruler when drawing graphs.

5.    List three of your strengths so far this year.

-Doing work on time

-Being prepared to class

-Being enthusiastic

6.    List three things you want to improve on in the next unit.

-Don’t procrastinate

-Be concentrated at class

-Memorizing information

 7.    Create an academic goal by completing the sentences and answering the questions.

In the next unit, I want to work more towards improving all of my critical thinking and my attitude towards math.

What might get in the way of this goal?

Me not liking math, but I guess I have to push through it…

What can I do if I get stuck or need help?

I can ask for help from AI or ask a friend or my parent or check my notes.
