ART SKETCHBOOK

One of my first known artist was Georgia O’Keeffe, I loved her drawings especially because they were unique and different from the artworks in her time which was mostly realism. Her artworks of rural areas and of flowers were always really inspiring so I decided to write her name using creative ways that incorporated popping colors and the nature, expressing how my ideas can be influenced by others.

I also made an abstract section which represents some parts of my life. Sometimes my ideas don’t make sense and is pretty unexplainable. But that is part of my identity, showing how I think outside of the box. The “outside traits” of this section is my love of abstract art. I like to use different shapes and organize them so they fit with each other and create drawings that don’t have a specific message.

Some of the design strategies I used were texture, pattern and shape.

TEXTURE: Two of the texture parts were the color palette and the paint brush. I tried to use crayons to create a bumpy texture representing the paint. Then the paint brush, I created a 3D brush part with tissue paper. It took sometime to think about how I can make it.

PATTERN: The pattern is in the abstract section. It kind of resonates with the starry night drawing but is drawn in my own way. This kind of pattern is mesmerizing for me because it goes in spirals which I find interesting.

SHAPE: I used a ton of different shapes in this drawing, triangles, rectangles, circles and so much more. Shapes make everything have an outline and is a crucial part of art. It also used unnamed shapes, “liquidy” shapes to fill up blank spaces that look clunky.

SOCIAL STUDIES VISUAL PRESENTATION

IMG_0418.MOV

For the unit on transportation and communication technologies, we also did a visual presentation. First, we chose a media, either doing a physical project or a video. I choose to do a physical project of two comparison drawings. The presentation had to show positive impacts, negative impacts and how to society fixed it. Then, we did some planning on our notebooks to have a clear plan. Next, we started creating the project for 3 whole lessons plus 2 extended learnings. I sketched and painted. Finally, we organized a script saying, again, the positive negative impacts and how it was fixed, also a short reflection on the entire duration of the project.

ONE THING I DID WELL: I did well on the visual creation where I used my creativity and organizational skills including time management. Furthermore, I tried my best to express the key points of our learning content through art.

ONE THING I NEED TO IMPROVE ON: I need to improve on practicing my speech as I didn’t really practice it with an audience and did way better on the day that we presented to the parents.

THANKS FOR READING MY PORTFOLIO!!!

REFLECTION ON MY SMART GOAL #1

SMART GOAL: Read EVERYDAY in one sitting.

GOAL PROGRESS: I made some progress in achieving my goal. The times I read and durations had increased but I didn’t get to read everyday.

CHALLENGES: Some challenges was that I didn’t have time to do read because of other homework that was assigned. One way I can overcome this challenge is to set a reading time and do my homework earlier in the day.

NEW INSIGHT: My new insight is that keeping a consistent pattern of reading is harder when you don’t have a good book, so reading everyday may be harder if the book isn’t that hooking.

ACCOMPLISHMENTS: My accomplishment is I always put reading for 20 minutes on my to do list, despite not doing it everyday. Also, I always read in one sitting and not like what I did before, for example reading 5 minutes for 4 times each day. It doesn’t help me connect each part of the book.

REVISED GOAL: I think my new goal would be setting a spot or time for reading 20 minutes and try to reach 7 days a week of reading.

SUPPORTERS: My mom was always a big supporter on reading. She sometimes reminded me to read in my leisure time that helps me improve towards my goal. Also, Ms. O’Dwyer and Ms. Sawyer recommended very interesting books that I loved reading, those were the books that kept me reading for 20 minutes each week.

NEXT STEPS: In the future, I would not only write read 20 minutes on my to do list but also write the specific time I’m going to read so I don’t go off doing something else.

ESSAY: TRANSPORTATION AND COMMUNICATION ✨SOCIAL STUDIES✨

In social studies, we first did a little reading on different technologies then chose a transportation or communication technology. I chose cable cars because it had resonated with my personal experience. After that, we did a research organizer which separated into 3 parts, corresponding to the 3 paragraphs we wrote in the essay. Searching for 3 different essays for evidence, we annotated it and labelled important information. Positive aspects, negative aspects, and how the technology got fixed were all included in this process. Next, we combined all the information and added a claim with reasoning. I wrote an essay on the technology.

ONE THING I DID WELL:

I did well on researching and finding evidence to support my claim and reasoning. It was easy for me to find different essays and putting it in the research organizer where I did well on separating my and checking my research.

ONE THING I NEED TO IMPROVE ON:

I need to improve on choosing a topic wisely and also connecting my evidence with my reasoning. Cable cars was a hard topic for me as not a lot of things were fixed. Furthermore, in my essay, the reasoning sometimes was just restating my evidence and didn’t provide further explanations that helped me connect it to my claim.

📖THANKS FOR READING!📖

UNIT 3 MATH PERCENTAGES

  • U: What do you understand in this unit?

Percentages in this unit helped us in our daily life. We had a summative about connecting percentages to real life problems. I understood that learning how to calculate percents, finding original prices and determining what product is the better buy using math can be crucial to saving money and consuming effectively in everyday life.

  • N: What new information did you learn in this unit?

We learned to find the taxes, discounts, or the original prices of things which can help us determine what product is the better buy. We did that by learning about new formulas like the percent change formula and the percent change formula to calculate more easily. After that, we learned about the percent changes, which meant we can analyze data and how much it has changed to create an impact. This can be helpful when it comes to concluding a project or doing a reflection.

  • I: What was interesting in this unit?

I think the discounts in the unit is interesting because it helps you determine which is a better product and helps you compare different prices. Discounts can be interesting because you get to see when a shop decides to lower their prices whether it’s for attracting costumers, or for a holiday.

  • T: What was tricky for you in this unit?

Something tricky was the calculations in this unit as it can be confusing when it comes to large numbers and more complexed formulas that we need to solve within the process. Also for decimals, it can be adding on to the complexity.

SCIENCE UNIT 2 CELL AND BODY SYSTEMS

Part 1 Essential Question and Standard Reflection

  • What was the essential question you chose to answer?
o A: What happens inside our bodies when we get sick?
o B: How do our body systems work together when we play our
    favorite sport?
  • How did what you learn about cells and human body systems help you
    to answer this essential question?

We learned about the functions of cells and body systems so we can know how it works, and what it does while we play sports. If we didn’t know the functions, it would be hard for us to determine which parts we use to do what. For example, we now understand that the lungs help us breathe.

  • How does this relate to the idea that the body is a system of
subsystems made up of groups of cells?

It relates because the body systems that support our daily life is made out of other subsystems like tissues and cells. Body systems also need to be built, it doesn’t come out of thin air. If we don’t know about other subsystems, then we wouldn’t know how or why the body system can work.

Part 2 Learning Experiences

  • Which learning experience was the most impactful or memorable for
    you as a learner?
o Stations Activities (Organization of Life, Body System
    Interactions, Specialized Human Cells)
o Self-directed notes (Human Body and Cell Notes)
o Watching Videos (Ali Isaacson, The pathway of Oxygen,
    Microscope Parts)
o Teacher Mini-Lessons (Heart flow diagram, Direct instruction,
    Explanation of Body System functions)

    o Dissections (Pig’s heart/ lungs and Bullfrog)
o Group work (VR or Cardboard Human body project, Cell
    Analogies, Microscope Observations, Connectors)

o Extended learning activities (digestion simulation, mini-lung
    models, and knee reflex check)
o Modeling activities (Edible cell, clay or digital models)
o Review Games (Kahoot, Gimkit, Cells Guess Who)
o Independent research projects (Blind Box Project)
  • Explain why by reflecting on the type of learner you are.

I am someone who likes direct and clear information, things like models are good for me because the labels help me connect to the picture. Sometimes videos can be harder for me because they move fast and can be quicker than my thinking process. I take time to write notes, and understand so it can be memorized and well comprehended.

Part 3 Improvements

If you could improve ONE aspect of your learning in this unit as a
whole, what would it be and why? Provide a change that could enhance
future learning experiences.
o Adding all required elements of a model (title, labels,
descriptions, scale, and color)
o CER writing (checking that evidence does not include reasoning
or that each point of evidence is linked back to the claim with the
use of your learning)
o Reviewing more for L2 quizzes
o Checking the rubric more carefully
o Using a final checklist before submitting assignments
o Submitting assignments on time
o Work towards extension (L4) opportunities
o Try to achieve an L3 initially without the need for resubmissions\

Sometimes I don’t check the rubric because I can’t find it, or I think I know the expectations already. I need to find it and check my work before submitting so I don’t miss crucial parts. For example, in the cell analogy project, we missed an organelle. Finally, checking rubrics can allow my thinking to be more straightforward so my work is easier to follow.

DECIDE WHAT TO DO – HEALTH DECIDE MODEL

#DECIDE #PeerPressure #Safety

The decide model requires you to pause and analyze all the possible ways to find the solution. It has 6 different steps. First being define the problem, you have to find the root problem, and what had happened. Then, it’s explore your options which requires you to find all of the solutions and what you can do so you can choose from it. Then, it’s consider the consequences, making you think wisely about what to do including the results. The fourth step is to identify your values, meaning to weigh your options, and feel which one is the most important to you. After that, it’s decide what to do. This is an important step as it will impact your action. Finally, it’s evaluate your decisions.

UNIT 2 MaTh POrtFOlio

  • U: What do you understand in this unit?

I understood that when you want to create something proportional, you multiply all sides with the scale factor. Furthermore, I understand that the scale copies are all proportional, making the shape the only factor for having a scale factor.

  • N: What new information did you learn in this unit?

I learned about the relationship between area, perimeter, and the scale factor. I learned that if you want to create a scale copy, you can determine the perimeter by multiplying the scale factor by the original perimeter and the area by the scale factor squared.

  • I: What was interesting in this unit?

I found drawing the shapes the most interesting as you can see the results through your art. If your calculations were wrong, then your shape would look wacky. However, when you get your calculations correctly, drawing a perfect scaled copy creates a sense of satisfaction.

  • T: What was tricky for you in this unit?

Something tricky for me in this unit is when it comes to unit conversations. When I have to apply the conversions into scale copy and factor rules, it makes it more complex, not only for calculations but also for the formula to be incorporated.
