Art Unit 1: Sketchbook Cover

My artistic process started with the planning page (the photo above). I have included several designs that represents my identity. First, it’s the ballet shoes. I have dance ballet for over 5 years now, and it’s one of my favorite hobbies, so I’ve decided to put this design on my cover to show my competitive and artistic identity. Following the straps on the elastic straps of the ballet shoes, it would lead people’s eyes to the airplane. The airplane represents my love to travel and discover new things. Following the airplane’s flying direction, it would lead to a bushes of daisies. Daisies are my favorite kind of flower while it represent my love for nature. Lastly, the big letters on the bottom of the page represents my initials, (Emily Chai, EC), reinforcing the fact that all of the designs on the page represents my identity. I had also used design strategies like overlapping and lines to complete this sketchbook cover.

Me as a Collaborator

I would give myself 3.5-4 (meeting plus to exceeding) if I am rating myself as a collaborator.

This is because I often start off the conversation while we are discussing as groups in the classroom, also when my table mates is going off topic, I would often politely pause the conversation and remind them what we are suppose to talk about.

But what I would want to improve on is to participate more actively in class discussion. This is because I often don’t feel as comfortable to share my ideas to the whole class and the teacher compared to sharing my ideas to a few classmates. So in the future, I want to change my mindset and participate more actively in class.

U2 Summatives

Comparing my summatives to my formatives, I think I have improved a lot because looking back at my grades for formatives, I usually get 2s or 3s (approachings or meetings), but for my summative, i got three 4s, and one 3 (exceedings and meeting). This shows great improvement of me as a CER writer.

One challenge for me was to avoid using personal pronouns like I, me, you. Because I had used a “you” in my claim, I had only gotten meeting instead of exceeding even though i have the ability to score a four. So that’s what challenged me and that’s what I want to change if i have another chance to take the summative again.

My future goal for unit 3 is to as always, use feedbacks from teachers to make improvements and try to get all exceeding on the next summative.

For the outline, I was satisfied with my grade because I got a 4. And I think I got four because I reread the example Ms. Devin had gave me multiple times to understand the concept of this task and complete this ppt to my best ability.

For the Pitch presentation, even though I only got 3, overall, I think I did a good job because I have fully memorized my script and I was having constant eye contact with the audiences. But what got me a 3 was me being to serious while presenting when I’m suppose to be more enthusiastic so my speech could be memorable.

Math Unit 3: Proportionality and Percentages

U: In this unit, we had learned a lot of things about percentage. We had learned to solve percentages using double number lines, tape diagrams, percent equations, percent change, word problems, etc.

Key concepts:

  • change/original=percent/100-very confident
  • part/whole=percent/100-very confident
  • x=percent x whole
  • tape diagrams
  • double number lines

N: I have learned new things such as new formulas, new ways to model problems.

(change/original=percent/100, part/whole=percent/100, x=percent x whole)

(tape diagrams, double number lines)

I: Something interesting was when I realized you can use perccentages in your daily life. For example, you an use it while you shopping, dining, etc.

T: I don’t think this was tricky for me because i got all questions correct on CFUs and I got a 4 on the summative project.

Visual Presentation

The task was to create a visual presentation on the benefits and negative impacts of smartphones, and how to solve those negative impacts. I chose stop motion for the presentation because it offers a unique and engaging way to visually present complex ideas. It allows me to use physical objects and scenes to clearly illustrate both the advantages and disadvantages of smartphones. Additionally, stop motion can effectively show step-by-step solutions in a visually appealing manner. This format makes the presentation more memorable and impactful for the audience.

I successfully expressed the key points about smartphones’ benefits and negative impacts through creative stop motion scenes. Overall, the visual storytelling effectively captured attention and communicated the message.

The timing and pacing of the stop motion video were inconsistent, making some parts feel rushed and others too slow. For future presentations, I’ll focus on smoother transitions and more balanced pacing to maintain audience engagement. Additionally, this is the first time I’ve ever tried this type of presentation form, so with more practice, future video would flows seamlessly.

Social Studies Unit 2: Essay

To write this essay, we had to come up with 3 claims, multiple evidences and a paragraph of reasoning for each claim. The first step was to research on reliable websites so later on, we can use quotes from different articles as evidence to support our claims. After that, we organized all our information in a research organizer. Lastly, we connected all the information in the research organizer to make all the body paragraphs and added the introduction and conclusion to make the essay complete.

One thing I did well on the essay was having strong reasoning to support my different claims. My reasoning had clearly explained how the evidence supports the claim and I also appropriately elaborated during the writing process.

Things that I want to work on is to write more complex claims, write more developed conclusions, and remember to put in multiple evidences to support my claims.

DECIDE MODEL (Unit 3)

This is the decide model that we have created as a group. A decide model is just like it’s name because it’s a model that helps you make difficult decisions. The D in the decide model represents define the problem, the E represents explore your options, which means listing out all the choices you can make. The C represents consider the consequences, which means listing about all the consequences of your options. The I represents identify your values, which means identifying what kind of person you are, therefore you can chose a option that suit’s you the best. The second D represents decide what to do, which means choosing one option from the step explore your option. The last E represents evaluate your decision, which means evaluating the decision you make (is it the right or wrong decision).

After explaining the DECIDE MODEL, it shows how effective the decide model is, and how it can help people make the best decision possible.

Unit 2 Math portfolio post

U: According to the summary sheet, we had mainly learned about scale copies and scale factors. And I feel the most confident calculating or figuring out the scale factors because there’s already a formula given to you-SF=copy/original and the only math you’re doing is substituting.

N:

I learned new formulas to use and different ways to identify scale factors and different ways to draw scale copies. I learned formulas like SF=copy/original and copy=original x SF. I also learned we can see this kind of math in everyday life like blueprints and maps.

I:

I think the most interesting thing in this unit was the review at the end of the unit. Because you can practice your communication skills, math skills, and sports skills while reviewing for a summative.

T:

I think everything was okay for me. But for one on the summative, I wasn’t confident in the answer I got, so I changed the correct answer into something else. And questions was one scale factors with different unit. So, I think I need to improve on how to find the scale factor when the two numbers are in different units..

ELA Unit 2 Formative #2

One thing that I’m proud of is meeting all the standards of this second formative while exceeding one of the standards on writing a claim. I followed what I’m suppose to do on the rubric and I think I could try to go for an exceeding for the summative.

One challenge for me is finishing everything on time because I always tend to work slower then others. This is because I always want my presented work completed to my best ability, so if I could redo the assessment, I would work faster and check my work all together at the end. Other things that I would want to improve making the order of my reasoning more organized and some little problems on conventions.

Between now and the summative on CERER, I would use the flint bot to practice my conventions and how to write reasonings in an organized way. I would use 15 minutes to practice it on days where there isn’t a lot of homework .

Unit 2 Formative #1 ( Literacy Elements)

I am proud that I did a great job in analyzing windows and mirrors by writing 2 CERs. But what challenged me was identifying the most central type of conflict in the story and the best evidence of a round character. If I could redo the assessment, I would review on my mistakes and choose better answers for types of conflicts in the story and evidence of a round character. So between now and the next formative, I would review my mistakes and review what we’ve learned on my notebook. And the advice I would give myself if reread the answers for multiple questions and remember to choose the BEST answer out of all of them.
