The task was to create a visual creation of what we have done research about and written an essay on. We had many choices on how to create our piece, wether we want to create it digitally or an actual hands on model. I decided to create a 3d model of a hot air balloon because I always prefer working on something in real life instead of on a screen. So I decided that I wanted to make a physical moveable model and that’s exactly what I did.

I think I did a good job at staying on task, because I was productive and used my class time well. I made progress each day and improved my model after receiving feedback from a peer.

So when I created my sketchbook cover I wanted to make sure it represented me but is also colorful and pretty. I decided to use a various types of materials such as collage, different textures and colored pens and poscas. Everything (almost) on my sketch book cover is in somehow connected to me, so I’m going to list the most important ones

Some design strategies I used in my planning for the sketch book cover is symbols representing me. I used different textures to make the sketchbook more interesting ti view and touch. I also used multiple patterns to guide the viewer through my different main elements of the art piece. Lastly I decided to emphasize the pig and the eyes by making them pop in different colors.

I want to improve my critical thinking skills, by being able to connect my prior knowledge to new information being learned and apllying skills to my every day life in math and science specifically.

Math: During math I will practice using things I’ve learned before to my new units, so if I learn something like how to multiply negative fractions with positive numbers, then I can use my prior knowledge of how to use fractions to help me with the new project. I am also going to be thinking about how for example percentages can help me in my every day life when going shopping to see the prices. By being a critical thinker I want to be able to expand my knowledge and use what I’ve learned in my everyday life.

Science: In science I will practice connecting things I’ve learned before such as cells and parts of cells to understand how DNA works by making connections that part of the cell, nucleus is connected to the DNA. I am also going to be trying to use percentages in my outside life by for example being able to understand what happens in my lungs when I run and why I become so out of breath.I can also use science for thinking about when I play soccer how my body provides me with energy from what I’ve consumed so I can play!By being a critical thinker I want to be able to expand my knowledge and use what I’ve learned in my everyday life.

Goal Progress: I have made more progress towards my math goal, I am not fully at only exceeding but I am at a meeting level, meaning I am improving my grades! I have not been able to make any progress yet in my running goal, but I am making progress in sleeping, I now prioritize my sleep more. I also drink a lot more water then I did before!

Challenges: Some challenges I faced with my math goal was that it was hard, some topics I don’t understand, but with the help of a math tutor I have been able to improve my grades and increase my knowledge. A challenge for my running goal is that I injured my knee, and I haven’t been able to go running for a long while, I’m trying to overcome it by resting and doing rehab exercises. A challenge with my goal of sleeping more is that I have so much homework to get done, I have tried to overcome that by getting my homework done as soon as possible and then trying not to finish it all late at night.

New Insights: I have gained some new insight on the math goal by realizing that sometimes it’s not possible to be perfect, at least not for me, because even though I try my best at the tests, it’s not always at an exceeding level, so to manage my “disappointment” I have decided that to succeed in my goal I only need to get 1 exceeding this year, because otherwise I put too much pressure on myself and end up getting disappointed.

Accomplishments: I have accomplished my sleeping goal because almost every night I get over seven and a half hour of sleep instead of what it used to be between five to six hours of sleep. I have also accomplished my drink more water goal, not only because I decided to do it as my goal but also because I feel good when drinking water. I have noticed that days where I don’t drink as much water I easily get headaches and have a hard time concentrating.

Revised goal:I might have to change my running goal due to my knee injury, because it’s going to take a while to get my knee back to my “normal” so I’m going to change that goal to trying to heal my knee and be able to do my normal activities.

Support system: I have had a support system around my for all my goals. For my math goal I have received help from my math teacher, my math tutor and my parents, these people have helped me understand questions, concepts and encouraged me to keep trying! My parents have helped me with my sleeping goal by reminding me to do my homework as soon as I get it and to remind me to go to sleep.

Next Step: My next steps to accomplish my goal is different for my different goals. For my math goal it is to practice by doing IXL’s and practicing at home. Social Studies Unit 2: Essayย 

To create my essay I had to go through a long process from beginning with drafting an idea to having a fully done essay. It started with getting an idea of what we wanted to do, I chose hot air balloons, then we had to find articles about the impact and history of hot air balloons. Then we had to annotate the articles and collect information on a research organizer. After that we took one body paragraph at a time, we started with the positive effects and then negative effects, then we had to write a paragraph on who was responsible for fixing the negatives effects and why. Lastly we had to add a introduction and a conclusion and edit many times, first by our selves then with a partner and lastly with Ms. Sawyer. Then we had a complete essay and that’s how the final product was made!

One thing I think I did well on my essay was my claims, because based on my own opinion and my feedback, I created strong detailed and accurate claims that were well written. My claims were good and properly opened each pargraph!

U- What do you understand in this unit?

In this unit I understood how to find the percent change by using the formula, %change=change/original, using this formula I was able to understand how to find solutions to problems. I also understand how to find the tip, I have learned how to find the amount of tip from the original cost and how to add that number to the total cost. I have also learned that percentages can be very useful in my day to day life.

N-What new information did you learn in this unit?

In this unit I learned a lot of new information such as formulas, vocabulary and models. I learned some new very useful formulas such as: n=x%โ‹…y and %=x%โ‹…n. These formulas were very helpful and are what helped e understand our current unit. I also learned A LOT of new vocabulary related to percentages(the list is a image under) Learning the new vocabulary was helpful for my reasoning and explanations, but also for understanding the meaning of the words in questions such as the word “commission”, if I don’t know the meaning of the word then how am I supposed to be able to solve the question. Lastly I also learned how to use two types of models related to percentages, tape diagaram and the double number line.

I-What was interesting in this unit?

In this unit I found it interesting how I could use percentage calculation in food which is something very important to me. I thought it was interesting learning about the food I eat. Now I can confidently take a look at a package of pickles and be able to tell you how many pickles you need to eat to fill your daily salt goal,(2 to 3 medium-sized dill pickles). I also found it interesting that I could use percentages to save money, using percentages I was for example able to figure out what is the better deal for burgers: Shake Shack or Charlies Burger๐Ÿฉท๐Ÿ’š๐Ÿ”

T-ย What wasย trickyย for you in this unit?

In this unit it was tricky for me to work with finding a percentage change, I struggled with understanding the concept of it and then when i did eventually understand I couldn’t remember it for long after. I also found it hard to use tape diagram because I had a hard timing understanding how and why it is useful to use a tape diagram. But after I learned how to use one I also discovered they are very useful and I am glad I learnded how they work.

Part 1:

I chose to answer this essential question:
“How do our body systems work together when we play our favorite sport?”

Learning about human body systems and cells was important to help me understand how to answer my essential question. When we play sports we need energy which we get from digesting food through the digestive system. Then the nutrients gets transported around the body to the muscles with the help of the circulatory system. The nutrients in the muscles tissue produces ATP energy with the help of the mitochondria in the animal cells. The muscular system uses this energy to move and then play sports. All of these body systems, circulatory, respiratory and the muscular system works together when we play sports. Understanding how each system and parts of cells work together made me understand how no things is independent in the body and how everything works together helps me understand and anwser the essential question, “How do our body systems work together when we play our favorite sport?”.

Part 2:

I found the dissections and the microscope observations the most helpful and my favorite parts. Being able to see inside the frog during the dissection was help full for me because it helped me understand how it really looks like inside. The microscope observation was fun because it helped me show it is real, that these things exist in real life and I got the chance to see how they look like. I learn the best when I have a physical thing in front of me that I can look on and touch in real life and not on a screen.

Part 3:

If I could improve one aspect of my learning in this unit as a whole I would say review more for L2 quizzes. Substance use has negative effects on our body depending on what we try and what age we try it. Alcohol is dangerous for your body because it messes with your brain development causing loss of brain cells at a young age. Many risks are also involved with drinking such as death from alcohol posing, car accidents, drowning, being exploited and addiction which is both dangerous and expensive. Drugs such as cocaine and marijuana are also dangerous because they come with many health risks and can cause addiction which is very unsafe and can result in death and or bankruptcy. Smoking is dangerous for your lungs and can lead to cancer or wholes in your lungs. It also makes your teeth very gross looking. Smoking can lead to addiction and many risks that are not worth taking. Overall substance abuse, drugs and smoking are all very unhealthy for you and I would recommend NOT doing it!๐Ÿšญ๐Ÿบ๐Ÿ’ŠโŒ

N- What new information did you learn in this unit?

In this unit the new information I learned was how to find areas and perimeters of shapes and scaled copies of shapes by learning various formulas. To find area of a scaled copy for example I learned that you use this formula: Scaled Area= Original Area x (scale factor)ยฒ. By learning this new information I was able to better understand how do find areas and perimeter of scaled copies and shapes which helped me a lot during the summative test.๐ŸŽ‰๐Ÿ’ช

I- What was interesting in this unit?

I though it was interesting in this unit learning about areas and perimeter and being able to connect that to other situations such as circles. I also found it interesting being able to connect my ability of making scaled copies to real life in Science where I had to make some measurements and make a smaller copy of the cell and could then find the measurements with the help of what I learned in math which was interesting because I didn’t know math could be so helpful in my every day life.๐Ÿ’ช๐Ÿง

T- What was tricky for you in this unit?

In this unit I think it was a bit tricky was finding the area for triangles, because I didn’t know that all rules don’t relate to all kinds of shapes in the begging. So I used the normal area formula for triangles and then got the answers wrong until I understood that to find the triangles area I have to use the formula but then divide the answer in half by using this formula instead: w(h)โž—2.

We had 8 classes of swimming where we got to practice artistic swimming and normal strokes. For artistic swimming we learned how to tread water, float and how to make formations. I enjoyed the artistic swimming because it was something I never tried before.
