Collaboration

My experiences with collaboration have been transformative, particularly through the activity where I brainstormed and prioritized ideas to make our school better (task 6). Working with peers on this project allowed me to appreciate the diverse perspectives within our group. As we exchanged ideas, I learned to listen actively and encourage contributions from everyone, fostering an inclusive environment. This process helped us identify the most impactful initiatives, and I realized the power of compromise and collective decision-making. I earned over 75 points in collaboration, which has made me more adaptable and open-minded. This experience has not only improved my ability to work in teams but has also strengthened my leadership skills, as I now value and leverage the strengths of others to achieve common goals.

Creativity

Exploring creativity has been a remarkable journey, particularly through the activity of designing a book cover for the Elon Musk book. This task encouraged me to think outside the box and express my ideas visually. I experimented with various design elements, colors, and layouts, which allowed me to tap into my creative potential. I realized that it’s not just about artistic skills but also about innovation and problem-solving. This experience taught me to embrace trial and error, overcoming my fear of failure and viewing mistakes as opportunities for growth. I now approach challenges with a creative mindset, confident in my ability to generate unique solutions and express my ideas in compelling ways.

Critical Thinking

My development in critical thinking has been both rewarding and enlightening, especially through the activity of performing a magic trick. This required me to analyze the mechanics of the trick, understand my audience’s perceptions, and anticipate their reactions. I earned my points by evaluating different approaches and refining my performance to ensure it was engaging and thought-provoking. This experience taught me the importance of skepticism and the need to support my conclusions with evidence. I learned to break down complex problems into manageable parts and evaluate their implications. This growth has equipped me to navigate challenges with greater clarity and confidence, making me a more effective thinker and decision-maker in various aspects of my life.

Communication

Enhancing my communication skills has been an enriching part of my learning journey, especially through the activity of interviewing SAS IB coordinators. This experience pushed me to prepare thoroughly, formulate thoughtful questions, and engage in meaningful conversations. I learned the importance of clarity and active listening, as these skills are crucial in understanding others’ perspectives. I also became more aware of non-verbal cues, which enhanced my interactions. This journey has equipped me to express myself more confidently and connect with others on a deeper level, making me a more effective communicator in both academic and personal settings.

Resilience

Reflecting on my journey with resilience, I can pinpoint specific activities that have shaped my growth in this area. One significant experience was going outside for a mindfulness walk. This task allowed me to step away from academic pressures and reconnect with my thoughts. During the walk, I focused on my surroundings, which helped me clear my mind and recharge my spirit. I faced challenges during this time, such as moments of self-doubt and distractions, but I learned to embrace these feelings and transform them into motivation. Earning these points in resilience has taught me that it’s not just about bouncing back; it’s about learning to adapt and finding strength in vulnerability. This experience has empowered me to tackle challenges with determination and a positive mindset, reinforcing my belief that perseverance leads to growth.

Extracurricular – basketball

Reflecting on my basketball career, I am proud of how far I’ve come since joining the Shanghai Select Basketball Club in grade 3. It feels like a lifetime ago when I first stepped onto the court, filled with excitement and a bit of nervousness. Over the years, I’ve developed not only my skills but also a deep love for the game. Being part of the middle school team in grades 7 and 8 was a pivotal experience. I learned the importance of teamwork, discipline, and perseverance. Each practice and game taught me valuable lessons about resilience and the need to keep pushing myself, even when faced with tough opponents.

Now, as a ninth grader on the junior varsity team for high school, I feel a sense of accomplishment and responsibility. The competition is fiercer, and the expectations are higher, but I embrace the challenge. I’ve grown more confident in my abilities and have developed a better understanding of game strategies. Playing at this level has pushed me to refine my skills and work collaboratively with my teammates. Basketball has not only shaped me as an athlete but has also instilled values that I carry into other aspects of my life. I look forward to what the future holds on and off the court.

Big project

I began by identifying my strengths and kryptonites. I acknowledged that leadership and resilience are my key strengths, allowing me to guide our group and stay focused on overcoming challenges. However, I recognized that listening and communicating effectively are my kryptonites. I often find myself so eager to share my ideas that I sometimes overlook the importance of truly hearing my partner’s input. Fortunately, I believe I have the perfect partner in Ryan. Our complementary skills make us a strong team. While I can take the lead and push us forward, Ryan excels in listening and articulating ideas, which balances out my weaknesses. I feel confident that together we can create a successful project. Although we haven’t begun the actual work yet, I am already proud of the collaboration we’ve established.
