Band Semester 1 Reflection

In this semester, I rejoined the band and committed to our winter concert, Halloween parade, and a trio performance.

Above are some photos of me in the year.

Strengths: I can connect music to my experiences effectively at school, because I am able to identify themes in music and apply them to my life. I can also read notes and have correct finger positions when playing.

Weaknesses: I need to improve my ability to use formal vocabulary and apply more dynamics. I do understand what the vocabulary means but it is important to incorporate them in my responding tasks. Applying dynamics is something I can improve on especially when playing in a trio.

Expansion: To further extend my learning, I plan to apply to ASA Jazz after Lunar new year and I’m currently doing Amis Solo and Ensemble right now.

Band Performance Task reflection

Our group chose our music based on our own tastes and how we could accommodate our instruments to play the piece. We chose Feel It Still by Portugal. The Man, because it allows clarinets, trumpets, and drums to play together and has a catchy rhythm. We learned that picking music that one likes is important to encourage passion when practicing.
I learned that as a drum player, I am able to control the beat organization when playing. I gained the skill of leadership as I was able to choose the music that everyone can agree on and keep the music in pace when playing. I felt more confident about collaboration.
A setback that I experienced is that I cannot find an adequate score from the drums, so I had to “attach” drum rhythms to the tune Kai and Evan are playing.
A factor that contributed to our success was practice. We were consistent in practicing, and I spent time after class refining my skills.

Semester 1 Report Card Reflection

My report card was relatively stable during the first semester, and there were no approaching grades. I am proud of my high grade in English Language Arts, as I had multiple exceeding grades. I did great in making a dystopian storyline and pitching it to others. (Partly due to the soft grading of Ms. Devin) However, I did badly on math as it was my strong subject, and I didn’t get even one exceeding, even though my grades didn’t look bad. (Mainly 3 and 3.5’s) If I would go back and change something about how I approach this semester, it would be that I would want to be cautious with tests and review for it as the first scores of formatives hit me hard in the start of this semester. Some actions I can do to improve is to review the points the teachers told us that we are going to be accessed on the test, so I can clearly know the format of answering and ways to correctly calculate the answer. Below is my report card.

Band-B flat scale and The Tempest

These are lately I do in band. I chose this because one I preformed good, and the other one was a great piece for playing, and our band played it well. I learned to count rests, name notes, and find when I need to cut in. I am proud of this because I preformed great on the scale and collaborated perfectly in the song. If I would do these again, I would have to focus the whole time and be careful to miss notes.
