Dystopian Fiction/The Giver

What did I do?

I wrote academic paragraphs had academic discussions. I used new words successfully, including transition words. I also did reading comprehension.

What did I learn?

I learned about Dystopian Fiction by reading The Giver and writing academic paragraphs responding to questions about the text. I had academic discussions with my peers, learned new words, learned how to use transition words, and learned how to comprehend my reading.

What worked?

My academic paragraphs and discussions worked. I used words perfectly and comprehended my reading with no problem.

What did not work?

I had a little trouble preparing for my discussions. Even though I had a minor setback, I still contributed to my groups discussion.

Personal Relevance

This unit helped me cite evidence and discuss with my teammates. This will help in the future because when I have a job, I’m gonna need to cite evidence and collaborate. Overall, this unit was very helpful for me.

Roller Coaster L4 Lab and Model

We all made a lab report to report what happened in the lab. I was put in a group of 4 and we built a big roller coaster model. After we finished building the model, we collected our data about the roller coaster model.

BAKE SALE

What did we do?

We had to make posters for our bake sale booth. 1 of them was listing the ingredients for our cookies, another 1 of them was a poster to get peoples attention, and 2 of them were about explaining our prices for the cookies. To be honest, I don’t think the ingredients and our prices are something that customers are interested in.

What did we learn?

We learned to make an ingredient list. We also learned to make 2 types of posters. One type of poster was only to look flashy and get customers attention and the other type was about explaining the price for our cookies.

What worked?

Our posters worked very well because I remembered to do every single one. I remembered because I always checked my schoology. I also reminded my partner to help me finish the posters.

What did not work?

Our collage was a bit of a fail because we didn’t have any photos of Aiden and I baking together since I forgot we needed to bake our cookies. I also turned in my cookie poster and ingredient list late. Next time I’ll be able to print it in color.

Personal Relevance

In the future I will be better at remembering things I need to do. I will do this by writing my homework in my planner. After I get home, I will check my planner so I won’t forget.

Unit II – Ötzi Unit Reflection

What did I work on?

I worked on a KWL chart, sketch notes, Ötzi the iceman, interpreting 3 images, a CER, sentence starters, how a mock trial works, and reading articles. For the KWL, I did the first part at the beginning of the unit and I did the last part at the end of the unit. Sketch notes, Ötzi research, and CERs were a breeze.

What did I learn?

I learned how to make a CER. I also learned how to make sketch notes. I also also learned more about Ötzi and his death.

What worked well?

I made a good CER. I made good sketch notes. I also did a good job being an expert witness on the mock trial.

What did not work?

I wasn’t confident enough when I was presented as an expert witness. I was very nervous standing in front of everyone. I didn’t finish analyzing the 4 images in lesson 4.

Personal Relevance

In the future when I am participating in a mock trial or real trial, I will have experience talking in front of people. I will always use CERs in the future. I will continue to research articles the same way I did with the Ötzi articles.

Egg Car

What did I do?

My partner and I made an egg car using 3 sheets of paper, 1 meter of tape, 4 wheels, 2 axels, and 2 lessons to finish our car.

What did I learn?

We learned the law of inertia, the law of acceleration, and the law of action/reaction. We used these laws to build an egg car that we hoped would protect the egg. Unfortunately, the eggs inertia reached the concrete and there was a reaction.

What worked?

We made a seatbelt for the egg. We also made a big crumple zone that should’ve worked. And we built a stable spine.

What did not work?

Our crumple zone didn’t work because there wasn’t a roof so it was loose which made the egg slip by the cushion and it cracked. Our spine also broke because we had to make the car shorter since we accidentally passed the limit and then we removed the middle part and taped it together but it was super bendy.

Personal Relevance

After failing to protect my car, looking at another car makes me realize how safe a car really is. It’s got seatbelts and airbags to resist inertia. The people are put in the middle so only the sides get hit, and cars easily crumple so it absorbs reaction force. I’ll keep this in mind when buying my own car in the future.

Balloon Car Experiment

What did I work on?

The Balloon Car was built using foam, straws, axels, wheels, and a balloon.   We used it to learn about  how every action has an equal and opposite reaction.

What did I learn

Newton’s 1st law says an object at rest will stay at rest and an object in motion will stay in motion unless acted on by an unbalanced force.  We see this law in action with the Balloon Car when the car stayed at rest until we released the balloon.
Newton’s 2nd  law says force equals mass times acceleration.  We see this law in action with the Balloon Car when the car had less acceleration because of the added weight.
Newton’s 3rd  law says every action has an equal and opposite reaction.  We see this law in action with the Balloon Car when air is pushing out the balloon and the car reacts by moving the opposite direction.

What worked?

The second time my partner and I made our car, it worked well because we learned from our mistake the first time and we took a little inspiration from our classmate’s cars.  We had to rebuild another balloon car to continue with the next lesson’s.

What did not work?

It was a struggle when Aiden completely destroyed our first balloon car.
To solve this problem we had to build another balloon car that actually worked this time.

Personal Relevance

The Balloon Car was like an airplane in the real world, when I go on a flight and the engines thrust the plane to the sky using action and reaction kind of like a rocket thruster.
I see Newton’s 1st Law in real life when I suddenly shift a certain direction when the subway starts/stops.
It is important to know these Laws because it helps engineers to build big stuff that doesn’t fall over.

Growth and Development

It’s important to understand the changes that occur during puberty because if kids go through puberty without knowing what’s happening to them, they’re gonna freak out and have poor mental health.

When I start getting smelly, I won’t worry. I’ll just buy some deodorant or cologne. Fortunately, my parents already have that stuff.

I’m most concerned about my future mood swings and self-consciousness. I want to have inner peace and serenity, not depression and self-doubt.

When looking for credible sources, I will never use wikipedia or sites that have .com at the end of their URL. It’s not that .com is bad, it’s that all sites that have misinformation always use .com and I’m too lazy to check website’s credibility. And when I’m checking if websites are appropriate, I’m also too lazy to check, I just don’t care and keep on using it.

Creative Writing Reflection

What are we doing?

Writing a fictional story based on a theme that matters to me.

What are we learning?

We are learning what a theme is, it’s a message to the reader. We are also learning about character development; developing a character that seems realistic and has good and bad traits. Also learning what plot is; it’s a sequence of events. We learned about settings; which are places that the story takes place in.

What’s Working:

I enjoyed writing my 5th paragraph because I included a lot of creative and descriptive details to spice up my writing. I’m proud of the dialogue in my story because I included some actions to go along with it and I never used the word “said” because “said is dead”. I got the idea for the story because I chose “abuse of power” as my theme and I jokingly wrote that someone in power deports someone else’s parents. Turns out, that was the only idea I could come up with so I stuck with it. My favorite line from the story is; “Jose kicked some rocks on the floor, “Nah, I’m focusing on the spelling bee today.”” I like this line because I showed the reader that Jose is bored by making him kick rocks on floors. I showed the reader, I didn’t tell the reader.

Areas for Growth:

Writing the introduction was a bit challenging because I didn’t know how to start a story. Mr. Degeer helped me by showing me an example from “Bad Hair Day”. My least favorite part of my story is also the introduction. It’s because I feel it’s too cringe and corny and feels AI created. It’s also too long and boring.

Personal Relevance:

In the future, I can utilize my creative writing in my life by using it in job applications, presentations, speechs, and birthday cards. I enjoy writing creatively but I’d rather be playing video games.

Unit ! – Campaign for the Olympics Reflection

What did I work on?

During the Campaign for the Olympics unit, I worked on sketch notes which are notes that have sketches inside them. Then, I showed a presentation to a “member of the IOC” explaining why New York City should host the Winter Olympic Games. While I was doing all of that, I was also researching to make the notes and the presentation.

Why Global Sports Events Exist

Global sporting events exist because it’s important for countries to participate in a global event so that people can explore different cultures and Earth can be united. If each country was isolated from each other, then major stereotypes would emerge, and everyone would be like an alien to each other. Since there are Global Sports Events, a vast majority of people do understand that foreigners aren’t completely different from an average person from your home country.

What Worked?

One thing that worked was the sketch notes. I met all the expectations and didn’t get an approaching or beginning. I even made a detailed sketch with shading.

What didn’t Work?

Two things that didn’t work for me were making the script for the presentation and presenting the presentation. When I was making the script, I couldn’t use enough persuasive vocabulary in my writing, so it was very bland. When I presented it, not only did I not persuade the audience, but I also messed up a lot of other criteria in the rubric.

Personal Relevance

Although my campaign for the Olympics wasn’t perfect, it at least helped me develop useful skills for future projects. One skill was my collaboration with my partner; there are going to be many projects where I must work with a partner so getting used to having one is very beneficial. Another skill is presenting, doing a presentation can be very nervous so getting used to presenting is crucial.

Critical Thinking in Science

What Did I Do?

I used critical thinking skills to complete challenges with Indi robot cars and build rollercoasters with Gavitrax.

What Did I Learn?

I learned about how I would be graded for critical thinking. Critical thinking is my ability to solve problems and make the right decisions.

What Worked?

My Indi team successfully completed one Indi Robot Car challenge. My Gravitrax team successfully made a working rollercoaster.

What Did Not Work?

For the Gravitrax Challenge, my team failed to use some special blocks and only made a simple boring coaster.

Personal Relevance

Today we practiced our critical thinking skills so that we will have even more critical thoughts in the future.
