PE –> Badminton Reflection

What did we do/learn?

In this unit, we learned how to do underhand & overhead drop shot and underhand & overhead clear shot. We also learned different ways to serve the birdie so that it would be hard or not possible for the opponent to smash it. We learned that the birdie has to go diagonally and over the serving line. The three main steps were: the preparation, the shot, and the recovery. We learned techniques that could help us improve our movements, looking at demonstrations from the teacher and other videos. We chose our partners to work together and help each other improve our skills, and we played singles and doubles against friends. Today, we learned the easier way of smashing/ attacking the birdie to the opposite side of the court: the kill shot (it’s way easier than the smash!)

What did I improve/ what do I need to work on?

I am a newbie at badminton and I don’t know the techniques. Each year in this unit, I feel I can barely pass and get a 3. Still, I work hard to learn my skills and I did improve in every section; all in skill, collaboration, and encouragement. I improved my skills and my movements, correcting them along the way and listening to advice my peers and teachers gave me so that I could not hurt myself, hit further/better balls, and lastly, win games. I still need to improve on my trajectory skills because although sometimes I’m already facing the diagonal while serving, I can’t help myself but hit the birdie to the half court across from mine side. I also hate my backhand skills so I need to practice more on my partner throwing the ball towards my left (I’m a rightie) to help practice my backhand hitting skills.

Others:

I want to thank my peers and teachers for helping me learn badminton. I really was bad at it, but my peers encouraged and forgave me along the way whenever I hit a really bad ball (undernet/ not over the net) or didn’t serve well. They taught me new techniques and ways to hit the ball so I could earn points for myself/ my team (doubles/ me and my parntner).

TTGs –> Skillful Communicator: Chinese and VMM

I want to improve on my skillful communicator skills in Chinese and VMM class.

In advance low Chinese, we are expected to communicate using Chinese every time we speak. English is not prohibited (not excepted) in class, and will have consequences to it if used too often. We communicate ideas and share different experiences with each other, sometimes working with partners to complete projects and sometimes on our own. We work with table mates to define the meaning of important vocabulary from stories we study in class, and we discuss problems with shoulder partners when we encounter them.

What I want to improve in Chinese class is that although I don’t speak English when taking the course, and I want to keep up the work of following the ground rules of the class. I want to share more of my ideas to peers and group mates, so people could have an idea of what I think about something.

In VMM class, we are expected to complete project on time, work well with peers and group mates, and share our ideas if we have any. We encourage other people to share their ideas out loud, and we respect them by listening carefully. We learn new songs to sing and to perform both in and outside of school. We also use apps in our computers, such as GarageBand, to make and crop songs for projects and to match a scene. We live play music using instruments that are provided in class and worked with others to create music that could match a scene of a drama show.

What I want to improve in VMM class is that I want to contribute more to the class by asking more questions, raising more hands more, and sharing more ideas out loud. I want others to know what I think, and sometimes I give advice, although they might not be good, I want others to think about it and give comments on them.

Vision Board/ SMART Goal Reflection

  • Goal Progress: Have you made progress towards achieving your goal? If so, what steps did you take to work towards them?

I have made progress towards achieving my goal. Although I still need work, I still read at least 25 minutes every 5 days a week. That isn’t my goal, so I haven’t reached it yet. I will make more time each week to complete my goal.

  • Challenges: What challenges have you encountered while pursuing your goal? How did you overcome these challenges, or what strategies do you plan to use to overcome them in the future?

Some challenges I reached when completing my goal was that sometimes I had a lot of classes on one day, and I couldn’t make 35 or even 25 minutes to read. Thankfully, I wrote 5 days a week my SMART goal, so that spared a day for me. That taught me how to schedule my time better everyday to make time for reading.

  • New Insights: Have you gained any new insights or perspectives since creating your vision board? How have these insights influenced your goal or the way you approach it?

I gained new insights and perspectives since I created my vision board. These insights influences the way I’m approaching my goal, because I listened to the advice that people gave me to improve what I could be doing to reach my goal.

  • Accomplishments: What accomplishments are you proud of since creating your vision board? How do these accomplishments align with the vision you had for yourself?

Most times, I complete my goal every week because I don’t have that much homework from school. But, sometimes I don’t do it, because homework from school piles up assignment after assignment, and it takes up my time, trying to complete everything in one or two days when I could have just split the work into a little bit each day.

  • Revised Goal: Do you feel the need to revise the goal on your vision board based on your experiences and growth since creating it? If so, what changes would you make and why?

I do not think I need to revise my goal because I think I need the time and effort, the process it takes to be what really is a good completion towards a goal. I want to work hard towards it and spend more time on it.

  • Support System: Reflect on the support you’ve received from others in pursuing your goal. How has this support impacted your progress and motivation?

My mom and my dad motivated and tells me to not forget to read every day, and that has really helped me, but I’m wishing to change myself and not need their help this new semester.

  • Next Steps: Based on your reflection, what are your next steps towards achieving the goal on your vision board? What specific actions will you take to continue moving forward?

I would spare out time each day, or at least 6 days a week to read and compete my weekly goal, and another goal is to try and not pile up my homework.

Unit 2 Formative #1 (Literary Elements)

What are you proud of?

I am able to apply what I have learnt in class into a formative assesment. I chose answers wisely before cirling them (although I still got one wrong) and checked my work after answers all the questions. I wrote full sentences and a complete paragraph for the mirrors. I correctly identified the dynamic character and the round character (which was basically the same person).

What were some challenges for you?

I was stuck on the windows CER because I didn’t know what to write but I figured it our at the end and wrote the paragraph. I got everything correct and got a 3, which is the full score, but I could have studied before the class/assesment to get more questions right. I took my time to complete the test because I was struggling when writing the CER but I still completed it.

If you could redo the assesment, what changes would you make?

I would read the questions more thouroughly and that is because I got a multiple choice question wrong. I would have gotten it right if I studied for the formative assesment beforehand.

What will you do between now and te next formative to ensure you meet standards?

Although I already met the standards, I would study for the next formative to be more confident.

Unit 3 Summary

In this unit, we mainly learned the basic concepts of percentages, which includes calculating percentages from equations and word problems. We completed a tiny project for our end-of-unit submission. We learned the percent change formula (C/O = %/100), the compound interest formula (P*I*T(in years) = A), and the simple interest formula (P*I*T(no years) = A). Compound interest and simple interest have to do with banking, while the percent change formula can deal with any kind of calculation for percent. We used these formulas to calculate the answers from equations and word problem, in addition to finishing our project. We can use these in daily life when baking, because interest is mandatory when doing banking and it’s very important to calculate the interest and the percentage correctly if you are depositing/ withdrawing the money into your bank account. Later in my life, it can be used/helped with banking if I need to deposit/withdraw money from my bank account (if I have one).

Semester 1 Reflection (ELA): Me as a Collaborator

How did I interact/respond in these following situations:

  • When I was placed into new table groups?

Of course everyone will complain if not placed with best friends, but I didn’t act like I was upset and I slowly accommodated with the people I’d be around for the next month or so. Sadly, when I’ve just familiarized with the people around me, the tables would change again.

  • When my table was deciding who would put the folders and notebooks back?

Usually, I would want to study at home so I always take my notebook and folders home with me, although my table mates never argued about getting folders and notebooks, because we all each get our own supplies and we don’t rely on each other.

  • When I was asked to turn and talk with my shoulder partner?

I would participate actively, sharing my thoughts and ideas while respecting others, such as being quiet when others are talking. I would respond to their replies with meaning and suggest useful ideas or new points/knowledges to keep the conversation going.

  • When I was asked to raise my hand in class and contribute to disscusions?

I would think before I speak, because if what I want to say is irrelevant or not to the topic, I would choose another time, such as breather or lunch, to express my opinions. I would ask questions and suggest ideas (not often) to contribute and participate to class discussions.

  • When I worked on the crowdfunding campaign with a partner?

I suggested ideas to begin with, and once me and my partner got the general idea and planning down, we started working. Me and my partner tried our best whenever we were working and stayed on task. We collaborated well and didn’t argue or blame each other.

  • How would I rate myself as a collaborator and why? Highlight one:
  • Exceeding/Meeting/Approaching/Beginning

I would choose meeting because there is a lot of space for improvement, such as speaking out more and participating more in class, such as raising my hand more often and suggesting more ideas.

  • How would another student describe my collaboration in class?

Student A: Fiona is a really active student during class. She works well with others during the project (formative) when the class chose a partner and worked on the crowdfunding campaign.

Student B: Fiona suggests ideas to me when we were doing the crowdfunding project together. She came up with the idea of writing about her cat, who was injured and needed a surgery.

  • What will I do to start improving when starting school again (JAN)?

I would keep my old habits, but I would like to add more on to it, such as raising my hand more, and suggesting more ideas.

Social Studies Unit 2: Visual Presentation

The task for this assignment/ assessment was to use a creative way to explain and show how our communication/ transportation tool impacted the world (the claim from the essay). I chose to make a board game, inspired by Monopoly. Technically, I wasn’t suppose to be “inspired” by making basically the exact same board game, but I still did. Why did I choose to make a board game instead of an animation or something else? Well, I like spending my time on drawing and creating my projects, and for this project I really did spend a lot of time planning, making, and perfecting my presentation.

What I did well was that I spent an average amount of time presenting the project to every person, not missing out any detail, explaining my project fully to everyone who came by and stopped to listen. What I could do better is I could spend more time practicing to myself or a smaller audience (mom, dad, brother, etc.) to practice my presentation so that I could get a higher score for the in-class presentation (where we presented in front of the whole class).

Social Studies Unit 2: Essay

What brief steps did it take for me to get to write the essay?

First, I did research on my topic, the automobile, on safe websites (mostly given from the school website, MySAS -> Databases), and then cited on my research organizer. I marked down the important and related information, later used in my essay. Then, our teacher provided us with a template to write essay paragraphs (separately from our real essay), which was later used to put together and added on the write the real essay. Finally, the real essay. It is used to asses our final grade that was put in Schoology.

What did I do well, and what can I improve on?

What was going well for me was that I didn’t struggle with the reasoning like I did in Language Arts when writing my CERER on conflict. It went very smooth for me as I wrote the essay, average speed and maybe even faster. I could improve on elaborating my ideas and explaining the evidence more in the reasoning section. I could also have used more relatable and specific evidence from articles and texts to get a higher score.

What are my next stpes?

From this portfolio, I learned that I can take my time and focus on deeper explanations in my reasoning to get a higher score.

U2 Summative Reflections CERER, Outline, Pitch, In-Class

The CERER summative was about conflict, where we received a story that we read had before, and we had to identify the internal or external conflict between the main character and him/herself or with a group of people, such as the government or the society. The outline is a dystopian or sci-fi story outline where we decided what internal/ external conflict the protagonist will have, what mirrors and windows we were gonna include, and what round and dynamic traits and changes we were going to put in our story. The in- class assessment was where we had 10 scenarios (E.g. Natasha is _______________, but later in the story she notices that the government is forcing the country to _______________, and Natasha starts investigating.), and we had to decide whether the main character was flat, static, dynamic, or round, and we’re given multiple choices to choose from.

When I saw my grades from the CERER formative, they were really really bad. I got a lot of approachings and only one meeting; in which case, the meeting was on conventions, the easiest section for me. But for summative, the total score was out of 16, and surprisingly I got a 16 out of 16. In every category, I got a four, which is the best you can get. I was very surprised and I was proud of myself for practicing, since I knew that practice pays off. When I saw my grades from the pitch presentation, I knew that the grade was already very high for me because I did not speak fluently but I still got a 3. When I saw my grades for the in class assessment, I wasn’t surprised about my grade because I practiced using the bot (Flint) at home and I knew that I would’ve gotten a 3, which was the grade that I got. Hard work always pays off!

For my CERER summative, I only had one challenge: I had trouble finding evidence in the text, and for my reasoning, I wrote a lot, but not really to the point. How did I face these challenges? I read through the whole story and found the evidences that were closest to support my claim. And, for the reasoning, I erased the part that were unnecessary and kept what was needed. I wouldn’t change anything from my summative because I got all 4s and I would like to continue that good work. I really didn’t have any problem with my pitch presentation because I knew I got what I deserved, which wasn’t the highest score because I did not practice beforehand. And, for the in class assessment, I got through fluently and I did it fast and I got the grade that I wanted.

Next unit, I would like to continue more on my my assignments and completing them on time and to the best quality. My goal for next unit is is to get good grades, such as meeting or above if it’s an L3 or L4 (although I’ve not really gotten a bad grade except for my CERER formative this unit), and try my best.

L4: Artivist Piece Reflection

The title of the artwork for one on the left is called Help. The intended audience is everyone in the world, and the message is to raise awareness of the environment and the damage we are causing to the Earth. It is also to help change the world and stop sea pollution. One of the design strategies I took inspiration of (not exactly used) is the Rule of Thirds, because I kind of split my sticker into thirds and took the 1/3 on the bottom and filled it with a plastic bag, fish nets, and an empty glass Coke bottle, representing the sea pollution that we are causing to the oceans. Another design strategy I used is colors, because the blue gradient colors from light to dark represent how deep the water is, and the black represents how dark the deep sea can be, with it all full of trash and garbage that humans throw into the ocean.

The one on the right is named Enjoy Life. The intended audience is both for people that have a happy life already, and for those who don’t. The message that I’m trying to send is that everyone lives a short life (at least much shorter to what people think they should be), and that everyone should enjoy their life and have fun. One of the design strategies that I used was colors and placement, because yellow and orange clash into each other, making my artwork and engaging piece, and where I placed the sun made it look clear and noticeable, giving viewers a good first impression. The second design strategy that I used was fonts and texture, because the font that I used was in caps and very fancy, making the viewers think that my art piece is creative, and the brush I used creates feeling of texture and 3D like feeling, which digs deeper into the meaning and makes the viewer think.
