During this unit in health, we had learned about many different types of mental health issues along with the entire meaning of what it is and how we can resolve the issue ourselves.
I had used to think that mental health was a condition thats kind of like a choice (Not really), where in which when you had bad thoughts or things thats when you got a mental health condition like a choice. Another thing that I used to think was that it was kind of easy to get rid of mental health issues by just being more happy for example if you were depressed, but then once I learned about it, I realized how wrong it was.
Now I know what many mental health issues are not a choice but a serious condition, you could get it from genetics or just grow into it, not because of simple things like thinking of bad thoughts. Another thing I learned was that it was not easy to get rid of such mental conditions than just to “Get rid of it” for example PTSD, during our final project we had researched that in PTSD you have to deal with professional therapists, doctor and just trying to face the fear or control it.
The purpose of my conference is to… student to explain why they are here and what they want to share with their parents about their learning journey.
I’d like to share:
What I’ve done and what I still want to achieve
Some areas of growth, struggles, and some of my work
My goals and how I plan to achieve them
My Vision Board
Some of the things included on my vision board are:
Some of my goals from the poster is that I want to sleep earlier, and have no late work
I wanna learn about economics
I like Anime, and Roblox
I want to get good grades, and get better at football
These are important because:
They represent me and my goals.
My Goals Are:
1.
Get good grades
2.
No late work
3.
Sleep early
Trans-disciplinary Transfer Goal (TTG)
The TTG I chose to reflect upon throughout the year is effective collaborator as I want to work on being able to work with a group and holding each other accountable. And how I plan to show it is passion project.
Core Subject: Math 🧮
I will now share my progress in Math, in Math class I am doing very well in my opinion as I understand all of the materials and how to use the equations to solve the questions.
I will now share my progress in Science, in Science I feel like I am doing great. As I frequently get good grades barely any bad grades. And I am good and understand most of the subjects in Science, though I may need more practice in C.E.R as I sometimes accidentally might put reasoning into evidence section.
This year my Chinese has improved drastically, as I can read well now, and I am able to get good grades from writing, reading, reading comprehension, and more. And I am frequently getting good grades, none bad.
During this project/unit, we had to learn about migration and the different aspects of it, such as push pull factors, human and physical characteristics. And for the end project, we had to make a creative final product of the entire story of a persons migration from an interview. For this project I had interviewed my Dad (Jan Willem Röben). And I made a magazine style project to showcase my Dad’s story from the Netherlands to Shanghai.
One strength I bring to math class is collaboration. Collaboration is a important skill, as it lets you work together on math problems, and speedrun work.
Another strength I bring to class is my winning mentality. Winning mentality is very important, as it can cause me to lock in, and always try, as even if I forget something or am not able to do something on a question. This mentality can let you keep on trying.
A third strength I bring to class is humor. Humor is very important as it can cause people to release stress when laughing. Another reason why humor is good is because humor can make people laugh, and due to the amygdala causing it to release dopamine into our brains, we can actually learn faster while having fun.
Area of Growth:
One habit I want to nurture this semester is showing my work better. I need to work on showing my work off better as I usually might not write down some steps, or I forget a sign even though I calculate it.
This is an area of growth for me as if I do not do it, it can affect my grade, and make it harder for me to recreate it.
Plan for Growth:
I will work on this habit by double checking everything when I write, and make sure all of my steps are down, even ones from the calculator.
One specific action I will take is double check everything, as it is important I get full score and not miss anything through my bad organizational skills.
Math Notation and Communication:
My math work has improved over time, this is shown through how much I organized throughout the time.
Overtime my math notebook shows more of showing my math and organizational skills.
A goal is to go further BEYONDDDDDDD
And have even better organizational skills.
Evidence of Understanding of Key Concepts:
This is the sticker project, where we made different shapes and patterns through showing our understanding of movement in math of shapes.
This is evidence of organization, because throughout the year I have been keeping track of every task and unit that we have worked on in my table of contents. I also color coded them to make sure I know which unit they are each in. Because of how well organized I keep my notebook, it is a great tool for learning as I won’t get lost inside it and is easier to be able to find things.
This is my active learner, it is a self grading on what I think I would get if I got graded by the teacher on active learning. Throughout the year from that point which was October 15th 2025 still, I gotten way better at some parts such as being on time and bringing tools I need, and might even get more exeedings on some ends.
Here are some comments that show good active learner. These comments talk about how, when I make graphs and such I include all the parts that I need. Another few comments would be that I participated in group discussions and did what I needed to do. Throughout all of this I feel like I improved the most on “starts and ends class well”, “keeps materials (and self) organized”, and “makes improvements based off of feedback”.
Evidence of Understanding Key Concepts:
These grade images show my understanding of key concepts very well, as from the images of my grades from making models and graphs that I make every graph well and use all the key concepts I need in it. Another piece of evidence would be my 3/3 (three for three) as it gives us 3 questions that make 1 point each, and each question is an important key part of what we learned so getting 3 for 3 on all of them except 1 shows how much I understand all the key concepts.
Evidence of Growth in Science Skills:
Standard 1: Developing and Using Models –
Standard 2: Constructing Explanations and Designing Solutions –
Standard 3: Engaging in Argument from Evidence (CER) –
Standard 4: Asking Questions and Defining Problems –
Standard 5: Using Mathematics and Computational Thinking –
Standard 6: Obtaining, Evaluating, and Communicating Information –
These are all the important and big standards in science class, and the one I will be showing my progress and improvement in is C.E.R. I chose to show this standard because this is the standard that was more difficult and annoying to me at the start of the year, but now I am fine with it and can do it quite easily.
My first time in 8th grade science C.E.R
What happens to blood temperature after a person dies? Every hour that a person dies, the blood temperature goes down by 1 celsius. Mr. Tafel is still alive, and his blood temperature is 37 celsius, Daniel Radcliffe’s blood temperature is 23, and has been dead for 14 hours. This suggests that every hour your blood temperature goes down by one celsius, this is shown through how Mr. Tafel is still alive and has the average temperature of 37 celsius, and Daniel Radcliffe has the lowest blood temperature of the bunch which was 23, and has been dead for 14 hours, and it is 14 celsius under 37. To conclude, every hour that a person dies, the blood temperature goes down by one celsius.
This C.E.R had a lot of flaws in it, such as sometimes putting reasoning into evidence though ever since then ive gotten better now I can make a good C.E.R like this.
This C.E.R was so much better than the first C.E.R as I was able to connect ideas together well and I was able to keep things int heir own section, claim in claim, evidence in evidence and reasoning in reasoning. Another reason why this C.E.R is better is because I was able to add R+ which is kind of explaining what things are.
In this PE unit, we had learned two sports, badminton and pickle ball. I had experience in badminton beforehand, so I will talk about that. Beforehand, I had classes about badminton not in PE. Though during PE we had been playing doubles, which is a mode I cannot play since I train 1 on 1. So it was a fun experience, as I can serve better now and also learned to do better doubles, as now I can work well with a teamate and know where I should be and how it works.
This unit we learned about many parts of the human body. Including things like the Amygdala, Hippocampus, Pre-frontal Cortex etc. I will go into more detail about what they are in a bit. But for the final project of this unit, we had multiple choices about what to make, such as a poster (what I made), some other choices could have been a presentation, a video etc. I decided to use my WOOP goal, to let me sleep earlier. And thats what my presentation was about, I talk about how it helps stress management, I used an app called “slumber” that plays like sounds, and stories to help you sleep. It works pretty well. So back to the things of the human body, we also learn about how they work, and how they work together in things. Such as the hippocampus being kind of like the memory vault, and the amygdala being like the emotions and also the bodyguard of the body. Another one would be the pre-frontal cortex, which is the last to develop, and is the thinking part of the brain.
I already have quite some experience in badminton, as I had classes in it for quite a while. Though during the Badminton unit, we had only played in doubles. And I usually do not play in doubles, so I really improved on my teamwork in badminton, with the back and front, left and right. Something I still need work on is my movement, because my movement is kind of L.
During this unit, we were working on robotics, this one being VEX robotics, we had multiple challenges such as wall climbing, sumo wrestling, or racing. We also had to build our on robots with our own modifiers. We also got partners, in this case, I was partnered up with Linda, and we were cooking, we broke the record for racing. But also in some parts we were not good. Overall I am proud of being able to break a record. Overall this was a great unit.
During this unit, we had to make idea for what our box would be, and I was thinking very hard and came onto the final idea of turtles in the ocean. Not only that, but we got a design choice in which I got the option of arts and crafts, and the stained glass style of it. I used the stained glass style to make the ocean with multiple colors and many lines to make it look nice. Something that I was proud of was how much work I put into it, I worked day and night to be able to get all the tape off, and then coloring it. Something I would change would be to make my lines bigger, because I was not paying attention to the measurement when making it on Inkscape so I made it too small, but in the end I finished it and it looked nice.
