Unit 2 Portfolio: Reflection on Learning

I used to think that mental health meant about the information in the brain and how the daily life actions will impact the brain’s mental health. Before this unit started I thought that some mental health conditions will be some people having negative conditions such as depression and anxiety. Some assumptions and misunderstanding I had is that I thought mental health did not impact the physical health but it turned out that it did impact the physical health of some people.

Now when I think about mental health I think it is a very important thing for a lot of people to learn about because it can give them a critical impact later on in the life. Some new information I learnt throughout this unit is how some negative conditions can be caused. For an example, for eating disorder the condition might just be cause when a person wakes up and asks themselves ‘Am I good enough?’. Before I learned about this unit my perspective for mental health is that since the person chose this decision they should take care about it but after learning about it I learnt how painful some mental health condition is and I also learnt that some mental health condition is not caused by themselves.

Language Arts: U1 Alien Grammar Communication

This unit was about teaching an alien(ai bot) that knows zero english. The final goal was to make the alien say a full fluent paragraph without any alien words in the middle of it. There was a role play where I was the FBI agent. For me I reached the final goal.

The most challenging part: The most challenging part for me on this unit was teaching the alien its first word. That was the most challenging part because if I said a word that the alien did not know then I had to use other words to explain it and if I made another mistake I had to do it again. Therefore, this part was the most challenging part for me in Language Arts unit 1.

The thing that I am proud about the alien unit is when I was making the poster. This was the proudest thing in U1 because there was a activity where we had to check every poster and when I checked some some alien was still having some alien words but my one didn’t, so I was proud that I was good at this part in Unit 1.

WOOP Goal

I think that MyHomework will help me manage my homework, and other important events for me. I predict it will prevent me from getting overdue and it will also help me by using time effectively and also use my day more usefully.

MyHomework is an app that help me organizing my homework and also reminds me of my home works. I used the feature ‘Homework’ the most because I can write down all of my homeworks down there and it will remind me when the due date is close. The app promised that it will help on organization and it did because there is a feature called planner and it can plan my days. Some limitations of the app is that some of the good features requires money so I can’t get all the access.

After I started using MyHomework App I think I got better at organizing time. Rather than spending more time on my phone by socializing, I could focus more on my homework assignments. I hypothesis was supported since now I think I am pretty good at organizing my time. Some side affects of the app was that some of the good tools I needed to pay money to have access. The app’s assignment organization system proved particularly effective for my goal . However, its effectiveness likely varies depending on user needs – it would be most beneficial for students with multiple classes and complex schedules, while students with simpler academic loads might find it unnecessary.

MyHomework effectively supported my goal of completing assignments on time by providing clear due date tracking and timely reminders. MyHomework app makes money by having some really nice features that needs money for access. MyHomework kind of organized all my assingments for me. After using MyHomework for about a week I did feel that I was more organized with my time and homeworks. I did not learn any different types of way that help organize my homework.

  • Right now I don’t think I specifically need the app to stay organized now. I would also not panic if the app was not working when it needed to be since I think I am more organized with my time. The app does not make me use other organizational methods or make me less likely to use them. Additionally, if there was a notification from MyHomework I would go right away and do my homework so the notifications were helpful. There is nothig really special about the design.
  • Although this app helped me with organizing my work and assignments, I would had prefer an app that helps me more with my screen time management. I think this because even when I do my homework when my phone is next to me, I tend to get distracted and look at my phone. Therefore, I would have preferred an app that helps me more with my phone screen time management.

Unit 1 Transformations and Congruence Reflections and Goals

I chose my final COL as the evidence of my best thinking because the test results were really good compared to how I started this unit. At first of this unit, I was really confused and got some of the skills mixed up but at the test I really focused and got a score that I was aiming for. One skill I want to improve on is double checking my work. I want to work on double checking my work because for one of the questions I got a partial correct since I did not include the center of rotation in the question.

Throughout this unit I improved the most at explaining and writing all my steps clearly by using mathematical precision. At first, I did not show clear work and just wrote down random stuff and I didn’t use mathematical precision. But on the COL I wrote every step very clearly and I also used mathematical precision for every question I answered. I feel like I still need to work on finding the center of rotation because I missed that out on one question and got a partial correct.

Strengths

Things I still need to work on

  3. Reading the question more clearly

In the next unit, I want to work on double-checking my work and reading questions more carefully because I lost some points because of it.

Something that might get in the work might be focusing a bit less since I can spend a time too much on one question.

If I am stuck or if i need help I can just meditate for a few seconds and start focusing on the question or work again.

Health U1 Reflection

During this unit, we learned a lot about brain science, we specifically learned about the hippocampus, amygdala and the pre-frontal cortex. We learned how all of these parts of the brain work together and how they relate to our stress. These were the parts of the brain that triggers our FFF system. The FFF stands for fight, flight and freeze mode. Then for a project me, Julian and Surajh made a presentation explaining how the teen brain works and how the parts of the brain work. Learning about brain science helped me in understanding my own behavior by telling me how to control my feelings.

There was a lot of surprising things I learned about the brain system this unit. The most surprising thing I learned this unit is that the brain needs 25 years to fully develop. I thought that when I was a teenager the brain was already fully developed but it turns out that there will need a lot of time for the brain to fully develop.

Also by learning about the teen brain, it helped me by communicating relationship with teens and adults, since the adult brain and the teen brain is very different, I didn’t really understand my parents but know I think I can understand my parents.

I think breathing will be the best method for me in by controlling stress. I think that will be the best one because I spend a lot of time by myself and I think I could squeeze in some time to practice to control stress by breathing.

Probability Fair

Our game was called ‘Mission Impossible.’ The purpose of our game was to make the ping-pong ball into one of the cups and the higher the prize is, the harder it is to make it onto the cup. The participating prize was a burger candy and the third place prize was also a burger candy. The second place was drinks but after it ran out we changed it to 3 burger candies. The first place prize at first was 2 bags of chips but since there was a odd number at the bag of chips we changed the first place prize to 1 bag of chip.

There was a bit of conflict when we chose a different game. That happened because we agreed on the game but then my partner did not know how to build the game. I also did not know how to build it but I thought my partner would know how to play it since he gave out the idea. After a long conflict we settled on this game. The solution of the conflict was making a new game by ourselves and then mixing our ideas together.

Something that went well on our probability fair was that even if the person missed the ball, we would still keep on giving them positive comments and cheering them on. Additionally, when the person got nothing we will give them a burger candy. That went really well until we ran out……. Something that we could improve on the next probability fair would be that having more prizes so that we make sure that we don’t run out of prizes this time.

The experimental percentage was 30% and the theoretical percentage was 50 percent. This happened because it was actually really hard to make it into second place and first place. When we first tried our game it was pretty easy but we added some extra levels so I think that is one of the reasons why the probabilities were a but different than we expected.

U6 Matter and Interactions

There are a lot of chemicals found in my favorite food which is fast food. In fast food some simple structures that are found is, carbohydrates, disaccharides, lipids, proteins and vitamins. Some extended structure that are found in fast food is Polysaccharides, Polypeptides, and Glycogen. Chemical changes appear in fast food because there is frying, heating, mixing and stuff like that. All of those can be a physical change because heating can make the food melt or change size which is basically just changing the mass. Changing the mass is one of the characteristics in physical change. Some physical change can be cutting because there is no change in mass it is just getting split up.

Some improvements I would make if we could do this unit again is double checking everything. I would want to double check everything because when we finished all our stuff we noticed that we were missing some parts so we needed to do extra work. I would also like to work on cooking because we messed up some parts. I think I have no improvements for the teacher.

Science U5 Reflection

The carbon cycle can affect the algal blooms. First of all because of the carbon dioxide. Carbon dioxide makes the algal blooms grow faster and when they are released they might fall in the pond which will make agal blooms grow faster. Also the temperature and climate change matters. When there is warm water, that makes algal blooms to grow rapidly. Lastly, eutrophication which is where there might be harmful chemicals being run-off into the pond and that might cause algal blooms.  The water cycle affects the algal blooms. First of all there is precipitation. When there is increased rainfall, they can carry nutrients and that might cause algal blooms. Next there is evaporation. Evaporation can affect algal blooms because when there is warm temperature, the water levels might decrease in the ponds and the cocentration of nutrients can increase from that.  Lastly, I the carbon cycle there is photosynthesis which is where plants use water, sunlight and carbon dioxide. But if the photosynthesis is affected by harmful affects, then that might cause algal blooms because the sunlight kills the algal blooms and the remaining can make them to photosynthesize and feed on other nutrients.

The ecosystem bottle and Gizmos helped me deepen my understanding of this unit. For the ecosystem it helped because I actually made the model so it is also saying that I made the cycles worked. After that, I could actually see how the models worked. For Gizmos I compared the results and I could see how photosynthesis could affect the environment.

If I could do this unit again, I would have studied more on the quiz because I did not get a really good score. The main reason why I think I got a bad score on the quiz might be because I did to really get the meaning of all the definitions. If I actually worked on the definition I think I could have gotten a better score. Therefore, if I do the unit again, then I would probably practice more on the quiz.

Math U5 Portfolio Reflection

Something I did well this unit is being able to solve questions easily since this unit was not that difficult to me. Also I am proud that I got a pretty decent score on my math summative. Lastly, I understood that unit very fast so I could help other students if they asked me.

Some challenges was that I had too much confidence that I kind of rushed and make stupid calculation errors. That kind of made me slow down on the question since I was practically blinded by my skills that I had to really concentrate to find my errors.

Something I really liked about this unit was that this unit was linked together with geometry so I could expand my understanding on problem solving and I also learnt other ways that inequalities could be used.
