End of Unit Language Arts Reflection

What did we do?

I learned about the Dystopian fiction by reading the book The Giver and writing academic paragraphs responding to questions about the text. I also learned about how to write summaries by first putting down bullet points then writing the summary with transition words.

What did I learn?

I learned how to write academic paragraphs, academic discussions and new vocabulary. I really worked a lot with taking notes for the discussions and just for dystopian fiction notes.

What worked?

what worked for me in this unit was that I was able to learn about dystopian fiction and being able to read The Giver at the same time taking good valuable notes. Something else that worked for me is that I got all my commonlit done mostly on time.

What did not work?

What did not work for me was that for the discussion I feel like I was not able to speak as much compared to the notes I took because I was nervous. But later on I was able to speak more because I found the discussions were not that scary, in fact it was fun being able to talk about the book with my friends.

Personal relevance:

This information would help me in the future because I am going to be reading for a life long and now while I read a dystopian fiction book, I could connect to this unit including all the notes and discussions.

How does Social Media Affect your Sleep?

I think the most important safety behaviours for me is that to control your amount of time of screens, this is not only because of the harming blue light, but also there are a lot of things you can do on screens and there are always more to explore on your devices. This which could lead to distractions, bad sleep habits, addiction and a lot more.

The five trusted people I can go to when things do not feel right online or in person are these: parents, any teacher I know, a friend, family member or the school counselor.

I think social media and technology impact teens the most when they look at it too much, this is because the more you scroll on the videos, or chat with your friends the more you want to keep doing it. Which can most likely lead to addiction, according to my own experience. For example, everytime I am done with my homework I subconsciously just go to my phone and open Wechat.

Some strategies that help me protect myself in everyday like online and in real life are these: I try to only use one hour and a half on social media so I do not get distracted or addicted. I avoid talking to people I do not know so I will not give other people my information. I also avoid unknown links from adds or random people.

The biggest learning I have from health class is about how social media affect sleep because before I made my comic I actually read a lot about it, so at the some time making my comic, I also got to learn.

Math Bake Sale Reflection

What did we do?

We made a caramel cookie basque cheesecake for our bake sale. In class we figure out the ingredients, the cost, the size, and the final price. At the bake sale we sold our cheesecake, answer questions that the customers asked, and finally we also got to try out some goods our classmates made.

What did we learn?

We learned about a lot of things. For example how to find the cost of a serving, we first add all the cost of each ingredient together to get the cost of the cake, then we divided it by the amount of servings. We also learned how to make a basque cheesecake, including each step like getting the right amount of ingredient, using a oven correctly and more.

What worked?

What worked for us is that we got through the whole process. Like all the math parts, the posters, baking the actual food and of course selling it. What worked the best and which surprised me the most was that we were sold out very quickly, I thought that no one would buy our cake because it did not look so pretty.

What did not work?

What did not work for us was that we did not get as much profit compared to the amount we were supposed to get. This is because we had to decrease the price, at first we priced cake one 32 per piece and cake two was 21. Then because we found that each student only had 30 in total and a lot of students would like to buy a few items so we lowered the price to this: cake one was 20 per piece, cake two 10 per piece.

Personal Relevance:

This would be very important in the future not only because of the math, but also selling things and making money. I learned how to push the customers to buy our product by introducing it a lot and stating all the good points instead of just standing there and hoping someone would buy it. In the future maybe if I open a store I could use this strategy too.

Unit II – Ötzi Unit Reflection

What did I work on?

I worked on many things during this unit. We first researched a lot about Ötzi the iceman, for example his belongings, what he ate and about his life. Then, we worked on writing CER paragraphs, which are claims, evidence, and reasoning. Lastly, we worked on a mock trail about if Ötzi was murdered by another pre-historic man or that he died from natural causes, which at the end we found out that he was murdered.

What did I learn?

I learned about a lot of things in this unit. First, of course about Ötzi, we learned about his life and how he lived along with his belongings and what he ate. Second, I learned about the CER paragraph. I practiced a lot to write a CER paragraph, we need to find the information, site it, plan the different reasoning make an opening statement and closing and more! During that process I learned a lot and improved my writing. Third, we learned how to do a Mock Trial, we had roles and scripts, I got the role “lawyer”, and I learned to write open questions.

What worked well?

What worked well is that during this unit I could actually learn a lot. This is because sometimes in other units I would feel like I have learned a lot of information already. But in this unit, I found a lot of new information. Also, even though I was really nervous and not that confident, during the mock trail I got to ask my questions well and project my voice.

What did not work?

For me, I think almost everything worked well, except that for the mock trial, I didn’t really know what was happening. Even though I knew about the mock trial and what I was going to do, I didn’t understand why. For example, I didn’t know why I needed to ask the witness questions until I learned more and asking questions to the witness was to make them say that Ötzi was murdered.

Personal relevance:

In this unit, there were a lot of collaboration skills needed. For me this is a big benefit because in the future if I do not work well with my classmates or I cannot explain my thinking I will not be able to learn as well. Also, I do not like learning about the past that much, so I don’t really learn about it, but in this unit, I got to learn about Ötzi the iceman which is just one more thing I get to relate to in the future as I keep learning about the past.

Science Egg Car

What did I do?

We built a egg car, we only had one hour to make it using the materials a straw, 3 pieces of A4 paper, one meter of tape and 4 wheels. The egg car need to keep the egg in the car safe when we roll on the tube.

What did I learn?

I learned about Newton’s laws. First, it is the Law of inertia, this law applied to this part: when the car bumps the concrete wall the egg would want to keep going because it was in motion, but to stop we added a seatbelt to keep it in place. Second, the Law of action and reaction, this law applied to this part: when the car bumped the wall the car is pushing to the wall which is the action, the reaction is the wall pushing back, to not have that much force pushing back we added a crumble zone in the front to absorb most of the force.

What worked?

What worked for me was that our egg in the car did not break which was a big surprise! After adding the crumble zone and the seatbelt our car got a lot better and did survive.

What did not work?

What did not work for me was that I didn’t have a positive mindset the whole time, this is because in the first class my partner and I noticed that the car keeps flipping and we kind of gave up. But in the second class we thought back and added a better crumble zone, took off the rubber on the wheels and added some extra pieces of paper in the car. This changed our whole mood because we found that it worked much better.

Personal Relevance:

Now I got to know more about Newton’s laws and about how different cars make sure that the people in the car are safe. This is very important because if I get a car in the future I would know what to check. For example the seatbelt and crumble zone.

Science Balloon Car

What did I do?

The balloon car was built using a balloon, a foam plate, straw, hot glue and some tape. We needed to make the balloon car within 45 minutes. To win, the balloon cars had a race and the fastest car wins. We learned about Newton’s third law, every action has an opposite and equal reaction.

What did I learn?

Newton’s first law says an object at rest will tend to stay at rest, an object in motion will tend to stay in motion unless acted upon an unbalanced force. We see this law in action with the Balloon car when the balloon on the car is deflated, the car will not move. But when there is air in the balloon and it is released that will be the unbalanced force and will push the car. Newton’s second law says the more mass an object is the more force you will need to move it. We see this law in action with the Balloon car when we added washers on the balloon car and seeing how it affects the distance the car goes. Newton’s third law says every action has an opposite and equal reaction. We see this law in action with the Balloon car when we release the balloon, the air that comes out is the action, the push is the reaction.

What worked?

This experiment worked well because I got to work well with my partner including making the car, testing it and racing (we got first place). Also I got to learn a lot about Newton’s laws, and seeing how these different laws work made it easier to understand. Lastly I got to have fun and stay in a positive attitude, thanks a lot to Ms. Cutter!

What did not work?

What did not work for me is remembering all the different laws and what each one means. This is because I did not really get it at first when we just started, even though I can remember the names and their definition, but if I needed to explain it in another way, I would not be able. I solved this problem by looking at more examples of each of these laws and learning how each of these things can apply.

Personal Relevance:

The Balloon car was like a mini version of a car in the real world. It is almost like I opened a car and watched how it worked. This will help me in the future because when I start driving I will know that the more force pushing the car, the faster in will go, also the more mass the slower it will go.

Creative Writing Reflection

What are we doing?

Writing a fictional story based on a theme that matters to me.

What are we learning?

Theme (my purpose for writing this story, my message to readers)

Character Development (creating believable characters with positive & negative traits)

Plot (the sequence of events in my story; Western and Eastern approaches to storytelling)

Setting (the world that I create for my story)

What’s Working:

I enjoyed writing the climax part because I could really show how the character feels and is, makes it easier to show the characters traits.

I am proud of writing the parts where there is a lot of detail, I was able to get an image in my head just from one sentence. Not only I can see the things that were happening, I could also hear things. For example the pencil scratching on the paper.

I got my idea from my own experience, this actually happened in school.

The Best Scene/Paragraph from My Story:

I think this is the best scene because I love the details and how this connects to my life.

Areas for Growth:

What was challenging to write for me was when Ruby stood up to Annie. This is because I needed to write a lot of dialogue and also descriptive words to make the story more realistic.

To deal with these challenges, I go to the books I been reading and see how the author writes the story, especially the dialogue.

Personal Relevance:

I enjoy creative writing very much, I can generate many ideas and write them down, at the same time I am learning. Most importantly I can share my stories with my friends and learn about their stories.

Creative writing can help you in life by making your imaginative skills much better, so if you want to write more stories later in life you can think of many to write about! Also it helps your vocabulary.

Campaign for the Olympic reflection

What did I work on?
I worked on making a persuasive presentation to persuade the IOC to choose our country to host. We first found evidence for our country to host, like the climate and culture. Then we started a script where we put all the information in our own words. After that, we made a ppt for our presentation to the IOC. Lastly, we did the presentation with note cards and slides in the back.
What did I learn?
I learned a lot about our host country, which is Seoul, since we spent hours
researching. In class I also learned ways to take notes like sketch notes, making a simple presentation with note cards and how to write with persuasive language. Because I was able to learn all this information in class, it helped me make my presentation better in many ways.
What worked?
What worked for me is I was able to submit most of my activities in time while at the same time taking notes about the things we learned in class, and at home. For example, I finished my notes for the presentation in class, but I took them home and practiced so I could be prepared for the next classes IOC presentation. Also, what worked was I could understand how to revise my work, like when I made a mistake in my homework, I was able to read the comments and edit it.
What did not work?
What did not work for me was that I got everything done but when I actually did my presentation. My partner and I forgot the time and talked for almost 25 mins, when we were only supposed to talk for 5 mins! Also, what did not work is I did not submit some of my homework in time.
Personal relevance:
I practiced how to talk with less filler words and look at the audience. This will help in the future because next time I do a PPT, I would know what to do. And get a better grade. I also need to improve on keeping track of the time next time, since this time I learned to remember to time and not speak for 20 mins!

Critical Thinking activities in Science

What did I do?

I used my critical thinking skills to complete challenges with Indi robot cars and build rollercoasters with Gravitrax.

What did I learn?

I learned about how I would be graded for critical Thinking. Critical thinking is my ability to solve problems and make the right decisions.

What worked?

I got to learn how to use the different games while using my critical thinking skills. For example making the different paths for the Indi robot.

What did not work?

What did not work was sometimes my teammates were wondering off or not staying on task. But we still got to work things out.

Personal Relevance:

Critical thinking will help me because I would know to think before I act. For example, not to touch boiling water with my hand to check the temperature.
