Apprenticeship Task Reflections

Collaboration:
During a school project, I had a disagreement about how we could find a solution to a problem that we faced during a project. My teammate wanted to go for a quicker and easier way that required less work, while I wanted thought redoing it would be better for our project. Facing this problem, we had a discussion about it and we analyzed both ways where I made sure to really listen to what my teammate’s idea was, which helped me understand their point of view better. We both realized that we wanted the same thing which was to use our time efficiently to get the best results while learning something. By focusing on our common goal, we brainstormed a solution that combined both of our ideas, and it ended up working really well. This experience taught me how important it is to communicate openly when we come across problems. Listening to each other carefully can lead to better outcomes. In future projects, I want to keep being open-minded and find ways to bring together different ideas. I learned that disagreements can actually strengthen collaboration if approached with respect and a shared vision.

Creative Learner:

During the T-shirt designing task, I felt my creative output was challenged since I didn’t have any clear ideas for my design. Initially worried, I decided to search online for inspiration, exploring various elements like lettering styles, icons, and color themes. This online exploration helped me discover new ideas. Later, I had a conversation with my friends that enriched my ideas even more. Discussing their ideas opened my eyes to concepts I hadn’t yet considered, blending our thoughts into something fresh. As I began to mix these inspirations, I realized that some of my ideas were too complex or difficult to print, especially given my artistic skills. This prompted me to simplify my approach and focus on more manageable concepts. I spent time experimenting with different combinations, testing what worked best visually and practically. After numerous repeated adjustments, I finally arrived at a design that felt right. The process was a valuable lesson in terms of being a creative learner, showing me that creative challenges can lead to unexpected breakthroughs. Ultimately, I was proud of the final design, which reflected both my vision and the insights gained from others.

Critical Thinking:

While completing the survival task, I faced the challenge of choosing between multiple incredibly essential resources for surviving on a deserted island. At first, I scanned the list from top to bottom, spotting several items that seemed pretty important. But, as I continued evaluating the options, I realized that some resources were even more important than I initially thought (e.g the machine that could turn salt water into drinkable water). This required me to weigh each item carefully, considering not just the amount of something but weather or not it was reusable. My thinking process was to break down the resources into three main parts. I started by categorizing the resources based on the level of importance — very important, somewhat important, and not important. I then looked over the list carefully, considering that in each of these categories I needed to have these three aspects: food, water, and protection. Finally, after establishing these priorities, I looked at each resource’s potential impact on my survival, and ranked each resource’s importance in each large category.

Communication:

One time, I had a conversation with a mentor where I had to listen carefully and actively while they spoke, and this experience had a significant impact on me. By focusing on their advices, I was able to gain lots of new knowledge that I hadn’t considered before. My activeness allowed the conversation to flow naturally as well, since I could ask questions that came across my mind during the discussion, addressing any hanging questions. This back-and-forth not only clarified my understanding but also helped point out specific areas I needed to improve in. As a result of our conversation, I left with a clearer sense of the direction I needed to go in with realistic steps to take. And over time, I noticed some significant progress in the areas that we discussed. Through this I learned that by being fully present and engaged, I could unlock new valuable ideas where it would also be very efficient.

Resilience:

I remember I struggled a lot with web design entering 9th grade, and there were a lot of things I just couldn’t remember and I couldn’t get. This setback made me start to doubt myself as I just couldn’t get good marks. Recovering from this, from these experiences, it made me start to think about reflecting on the things that I was specifically struggling with and I made sure to go back and look at it once more and sometimes seek help from the internet so I could understand it fully. Additionally, before tests I would also look over my notes and look at some examples that we were given to that I could remember how write the code and some rules that followed those codes. And from this experience I learned that failure is a very normal part of learning and that as long as you don’t give up on it it will lead to success.

Mindful Walking – Task 5

  1. We saw the trees that were bare during winter turn green, and the magnolia flower bulbs start to emerge
  2. We saw the wind blow through the bushes on the side of the paths, and other students spending time on the basketball court.
  3. We heard the wind bells ring when wind blew past the trees

In what ways was I…

  • a critical thinker: considering carefully about what could possibly link with my image
  • an effective collaborator: listening carefully in order to find key information that could possibly link my image with their’s
  • a skillful communicator: being specific about my image and being clear with my words
  • creative learner: studied my image so that I could have an idea of what perhaps the other people’s images would look like
  • resilient: I didn’t give up even when I couldn’t find people who has images that resonated with mine

AI 🤖

Goal – I want to make an effort to do my own independent thinking (++🤔💭)before turning to AI.

Having this AI-related goal is important to me as this helps me develop my thinking skills instead of being reliant on AI. Also, this goal helps build a habit of independent thinking which in my opinion would help a lot in life. And to achieve my goal, I will try not to use AI for finding crucial information first and try doing some research or thinking for myself, then if I really can’t think of anything, I can then seek help from AI.
