You can have it all, just not all at once.

Portfolio Post Reflection: Designing a Story Problem (Piecewise Function Project)

My story is about a doctor from a war-torn country migrating to the United States, who tried to rebuild his career there. He rented an apartment and started with a job as a delivery truck driver, then a job as a hospital orderly after he passed his exam with a promotion later, then finally ending with a job as a staff physician after he got his doctor’s medical license. However, just after he got his promotion, he was diagnosed with major depression, which cost him almost all his money to treat. And on his 23rd month in the US, he died of a car accident. Our story modeled the changes in his balance after he moved to the US.

The part of your project that I am most proud of is being able to figure out a way for our model to have a x-intercept, which meant that his balance had to clear to zero. The hardest part of creating my piecewise function is figuring out which points are open circles and which points are closed circles. If I could revise one part of this project, I would strengthen clarity in my written explanations. This project helped me understand the intervals in piecewise functions better.

Unit 2 Portfoliio

Part 1: Unit 2 Topic A and B Test Reflection (Functions & Statistics)

A. I chose question 6 as evidence of my best thinking because it’s was an extension and I got it right. I also chose question 7 as evidence of my best thinking because even though I forgot to explain the y-intercept for part a, I was still able to complete parts b, c, and d and get them correct.

B. Throughout unit 2, I improved most at interpreting linear models using slope, intercept, and correlation and distinguishing correlation from causation. One skill from this unit that I still need to work on is identifying outliers. The biggest challenge for me on this assessment was distinguishing correlation from causation. One strategy that helped me on this test was using residual plots to evaluate how well a line fits the data.

Part 2: Goal Reflection & End-of-Semester Check-In

A. Last unit, I set this goal: in the next unit, use more precise notation when doing my work, and I think I worked well towards this goal, because I was able to remember how to explain what the slope and y-intercept each mean in context. Ms. Fisher’s reminders helped me work towards this goal.

B. Three strengths of my strengths so far this year are being able to interpret linear models using slope, intercept, and correlation, distinguish correlation from causation, and use residual plots to evaluate how well a line fits the data. Three things I want to improve on in the next unit are engaging more in class discussions, reading the problem carefully first to avoid making careless mistakes, and leaving extra time in the end to check my work before submission.

C. In the next unit, I want to be more careful and double-check when doing my work, whether if it’s an assessment, a quiz, or just a practice. Something that might get in the way of this goal is running out of time. I don’t think that I will get stuck, but I might forget; however, I could remember to do it every time I do a practice, so that I can remember during an assessment.

Unit 3: Identity and Healthy Relationships

The purpose of this project is to help us apply what we learned in class (boundaries, communication, unhealthy characteristics, consent, etc. ) into actual relationships, both in media or in real life. We had to identify whether the relationship we were analyzing was a toxic or healthy relationship, so that we could be more aware in real life. The relationship we analyzed, Damon and Elena’s relationship, was clearly a toxic relationship, since there were many scenes were Damon trespasses boundaries, perpetuates dominant male characteristics to control Elena, and depicts signs of toxic relationship characteristics.

Three of the most important ideas I learned this unit are boundaries, communication, and consent. In relationships, both sides should set boundaries, such as personal space, no texting when one side is out with friends, etc. And both sides should respect each other’s boundaries. A healthy relationship should also have direct and assertive communication, so that both sides could clearly communicate their needs and express their feelings, which would make it easier for both sides. Last but not least, consent is also a very important part in a healthy relationship. Before sexual activities, always get the other person’s consent, which means a clear “yes” or words or actions with the similar meaning when they’re not incapacitated.

Unit 2 Portfolio: Reflection on Learning

I used to think that mental health wasn’t as important as our physical health, but now I learned that severe mental health conditions can also lead to our bodies malfunctioning, which is why I value my mental health as much as my physical health now. This is also why I understand people with mental health issues better. Now I know what they’re experiencing, I realize that it’s worse than it looks, so we should be more supporting and understanding for them.

I also used to think that mental health just meant our general moods and emotions we feel, but after this unit, I think our well-being, obsessions, and many others that can also affect our physical body are also a part of our mental health. For example, wanting to wash your hands over and over again because you’re afraid of germs getting on it can also be a mental health condition – OCD. This might be look like a habit, but it can also be a result of anxiety or another mental health problem. And over time, it might even worsen and interfere with our daily lives.

Chinese Reflection

I’m most proud of writing my 神话故事, because it was challenging to write a story that’s unique, interesting, and meaningful at the same time. My biggest challenge was taking notes for the two Mulan movies because the movie was really long, and I tried to be really specific. I demonstrated qualities of an active learner, and I think I just need to keep up next quarter.

PE Reflection

I most proud of earning a meeting for striking and fielding unit. My biggest challenge was playing doubles in table tennis unit, because it was hard to figure out whose turn it was to hit the ball. I demonstrated qualities of an active learner, and I want to work on collaborating better next quarter.

Social Studies Unit 1 Reflection

I’m most proud of my final product of my inquiry into cartoon adaptations. My final product included sections that were clear and informative. My organizer demonstrated persistence in structuring your ideas, and my API analysis identified the key source details, and building on this by discussing reliability and limitations will help strengthen your evaluation. My biggest challenge has been writing clear CERs with evidence and connecting claims and reasoning. I demonstrated the qualities of an active learner, and I want to work on participating more in class next quarter.

Science Semester 1 Active Learner Reflection

I’m most proud of meeting all the standards for the unit 1 final modeling project. My biggest challenge has been understanding sound energy and vibrations. I did demonstrate the qualities of an active learner, and I want to work on participating more fully next quarter. My current goal is to be better at participating in class. I will do this by answering Mr. Tafel’s questions and following directions, such as turning around and facing him, the first time he gives them, rather than making him say it the second time. I’m now able to turn around to face him the first time he gives instructions, but I’m still working on answering his questions.
