This unit we learned and practiced many badminton skills. For instance, we learned the forehand and backhand serves. In addition, we learned about different grips, the handshake grip, the thumb grip and lots more. Then, we learned about the drop shot and the long shot. We practiced these skills by playing the King of the Court where we move up and down the gym depending on whether we won or not.
One thing that I am good at in badminton is doing the forehand serve. I am able to serve really far with that serve and sometimes my opponent won’t be able to hit the birdie back. I am really good at this serve because I practiced this serve a lot during class and after class.
One thing that I still need to practice is the drop shot. When the opponent hits the birdie towards me, I am not that confident to hit back with a drop shot. I don’t really know how to control my strength so sometimes the drop shot becomes a long shot.
I would rate myself as a 3 as an effective collaborator.
I gave myself a meeting as an effective collaborator because I always listen and participate in class. Sometimes I also help my table mates to get the notebooks when I get to class. In unit 1 I also worked really well with my partner creating the product branding project, and we finished really quickly. But, I don’t really raise my hand to answer questions in class so overall I think I got a meeting.
How would another student describe your collaboration skills in class?
You always do your part of the work and you are easy to communicate with during class. Whenever we have to work together during a project we always complete high quality work and finish it in time before the due date.
What will you do to improve starting from January?
I will improve my collaboration skills starting from January by raising my hand more in class and answer the teachers question. I would also discuss more during class/group discussions to improve my grades of effective collaborator.
How do you think your summatives compared to your formatives?
I think I did a lot better for my summatives compared to my formatives because for my formative CERER I struggled with conventions. I didn’t know where I was supposed to write a comma or how I was supposed to cite so I got a approaching on conventions. On the other hand, for my summative CERER I improved a lot, I only made a tiny mistake but I got a meeting for conventions. My reasoning, claim, evidence also improved from a meeting to a exceeding.
What are you proud of?
I am proud that I was able to improve a lot on my CERER, mostly on my reasoning. Because during the formative CERER I didn’t know how to connect the evidence to the claim so I got an approaching plus for that part. On the other hand, for the formative this time, I was able to practice with Flint the AI to improve my overall skills, and I got exceedings for my claim, evidence and reasoning.
What were some challenges for you?
Some challenges for me was when I was doing the pitch presentation. Even though I already practiced my pitch many times at home, I still got really nervous when I was saying my pitch because I was worried that I might forget something. So, that led to me showing little expression during the pitch so I got a meeting on the pitch presentation.
How effectively did you use feedback from your peers and teachers?
I think I used some feedback from my peers and teachers but not all. Because sometimes I had a different perspective than my teachers or peers, so I decided to not use some of the feedback they gave me. For example, for the outline of the story, one of my classmates said that maybe I could make the conflict more complicated to attract the audience, but I thought that it was already enough so I didn’t change that part. At last, it also turned out to be pretty good.
If you could redo the summative assessment, what changes would you make?
If I could redo the summative assessment, I would remember to not make any mistakes for conventions. I added a comma instead of a colon, because of my mistake I got a meeting instead of an exceeding for the conventions. Next time I would remember to practice conventions with the AI bot to make sure I don’t make any mistakes.
What advice would you give yourself for unit 3?
I would tell myself to always practice all parts of the rubric by myself or with AI for unit 3. Because there would be a lower chance for me to make mistakes in the future. For instance, I didn’t practice conventions before the summative CERER, so I got a meeting for that part.
Set one goal for future work.
My goal for future work is to improve my conventions and speaking skills.
Something that I understand about the topic is that percentages and fractions are related to proportional relationships. Proportional relationships and percentages represent change in the real world because it helps us solve problems in real life.
N: What new information do you have?
Some new information I learned in this unit is calculating the percent change, and also using equations, double number lines, tape diagrams to solve problems. For instance, using these strategies I would be able to see the problem visually, which would make it easier for me to solve a problem.
I: What is interesting about the unit?
Something that was interesting about the unit was the summative project at the end of the unit. It was interesting because we got to choose our own topics that we were interested about, calculate and compare their prices to pick the one that we would most likely buy. For example, I chose to shop for playstation videogames between Taobao, Amazon, Alibaba and I found out that Taobao offers a better deal because it doesn’t have a shipping fee.
T: What was tricky for you?
Something that was tricky for me was calculating the percent change between different objects. Even though it was really easy for me to find whether it was decrease or increase, it was hard for me to find the exact percent change.
The task was to show and explain the technology we chose in any form. For example, using minecraft to make your technology, drawing a poster, making a stop-motion video or making a video game. The form I chose to present smartphones is making a monopoly board game. I chose this because I really enjoy making arts and craft, and I also like playing board games, especially monopoly.
One thing that I think I did well was colors and drawings of my game board. I used a variety of colors to make it look nice and I also drew small drawings to make the game attracting for the audience. I am proud of it because I’m not a really good artist, but it actually turned out to be pretty good. One thing I still need to work on for next time is using my time. For the first two classes I was just taking my time to make the game and not making sure that I had enough time. But, after two classes I realized that I only had the question cards done and if I continued at this pace, it would be highly unlikely for me to finish the board game in time. So I kind of rushed through it for the rest of the classes. Next time I should make sure I had a sense of time when doing a project.
First, I chose a communication/transportation technology, which was smartphones. Then, we had to research about the technology and choose several articles about the impact it had on the society. Next, we filled the information the article had on a research organizer which included positive/negative impacts, how it was solved, and how solved the negative impacts. Afterwards, we filled out a paragraph planner that helped us write the final CER easier. Finally, we finished the CER by using the help of the paragraph planner.
One thing I did well on my essay was the reasoning supported the evidence and was able to connect it with the claim. One thing I still need to learn to do is writing the conclusion paragraph. My conclusion was a bit too short and also lacked of information so I still need to learn to write a conclusion.
Sticker 1: NO POLLUTION- The intended message I want to deliver in this sticker is to remind everyone to not pollute the planet. The intended audience is everyone because almost everything that we are doing everyday is polluting the Earth. For example, cars, trash, oil, and gas. I used the use of icons design strategy in the sticker because the Earth wearing a mask might make people think its experiencing a severe state of pollution which would make people emotional. In addition, I used a catchy slogan for the next design strategy because the slogan was easy to remember and also catchy.
Sticker 2: NO POVERTY- The intended message I want to deliver in this sticker is to stop poverty happening. Since many people in the world is experiencing poverty causing a lack of basic needs, for instance food, water, shelter and healthcare the intended audience would be everyone around the world. I used the simplicity design strategy in this sticker because I only added the message I wanted to deliver and a small image, nothing else. But, it still represents a lot of things for the audience. I also used pathos as the next design strategy because this sticker might evoke strong emotions and feelings.
In this soccer unit we learned to dribble, pass, and kick the ball into the goal. We practiced passing the soccer ball with our friends and make sure that our aim was straight. In addition, we also played games as a team of 5 to 6 people. We would compete against each other and switch teams after a while.
Something that I am proud of is I am able to pass the ball directly to my teammates. My teammates would be able to receive the ball without moving towards the ball, the ball would just move towards them.
Something that I should improve on is scoring the goal. Whenever I try to score a point, the ball just rolls towards the goalie which would be very easy for the goalie to stop. I want to be able to kick high and powerful balls so that it won’t be as easy for the goalie to stop it.
Something that I understand about this topic is that by using ratios and proportions, it will help me calculate the scale. The scale is a ratio that compares the dimensions of a real object against the dimensions of a scale drawing. I also understood that scale drawings are always proportional.
N: What new information do you have?
Some new information I learned in this unit is using the scale factor to find missing measurements. In addition, I also learned that scale drawings are always proportional, their corresponding angles are always equal and their corresponding side lengths are always proportional. Using this knowledge, it will help me find the unknown side length for a shape.
I: What is interesting about this unit?
Something that is interesting about this unit is that we played the unfair game to help us practice more problems that relates to proportionality. Basically as a table group we had to pick a number and answer the question that’s under that number, and then depending if we got the question correct or not, our points would either decrease or increase. This game was really fun and interesting because we could play as a whole class.
T: What was tricky for you?
Something that was tricky for me is calculating the surface area of an object. For example, during the unit 2 math summative we had to calculate the amount of paint we needed to use to paint the eiffel tower using a scale object of the eiffel tower. I forgot that we had to multiply the scale factor against the scale factor before calculating the surface area so I got the question incorrect.
In this unit of PE swimming, we learned about all kinds of moves and actions in artistic swimming. For instance, floating, the oyster, many kinds of dives and also a lift, etc. We practiced all of the moves together as a class and then we had to join together as a 3-6 people group to complete a combination using the moves, actions we learned.
What’s working?
Something that’s working is I am really good at treading water and keeping my head above the water. I am able to stay above the water for long amounts of time. Also I am also pretty good at diving, since I am a competitive swimmer I am pretty comfortable with water so I am able to complete many different high skilled dives.
What’s not working?
Something that’s not working is that I still have to work on floating because I can’t float for long periods of time. Sometimes I still choke on water and start sinking when we have to float for a long time.
