Designing a Story Problem (Piecewise Function Project)

Describe your story and what real-life situation it modeled?
In the “Designing a Story Problem” project, we created a story about a logo designer named Jay. The story models a real-life business pricing situation, showing how prices change based on workload, time, and effort. In addition, it also explains how businesses earn profits and net gains, and shows examples of discounts and cost-efficient purchasing.

What part of your project are you most proud of? Why?
The part of the project that I was most proud of was the process of creating the story. We used a lot of critical thinking to develop a realistic story, making sure that it included mathematical thinking but also an engaging storyline. By creating a multi-step problem, it showed a clear understanding of the math concepts, but also how they could be applied to real-life situations.

What was the hardest part of creating your piecewise function?
The hardest part of creating our piecewise function was answering the question that we created. This was because we designed a difficult multi-step problem that required critical thinking and a lot of math. To answer our question, we not only needed to find out whether the client’s assumption was correct, but we also needed to graph the different intervals and find the slopes of each. This part was not only challenging but also very time-consuming.

If you could revise one part of this project, what would you improve and how?
If I could revise this project, we could improve it by using negative and zero slopes. Throughout our project, we only used positive slopes. By including a variety of slopes, such as negative and zero slopes, we could demonstrate a deeper understanding of the concept and create more interesting graphs and questions.

What did this project help you understand better about piecewise functions?
This project helped me develop a clearer understanding of piecewise functions while also building on my knowledge of linear functions and equations. By learning these concepts, I was able to see how piecewise functions work in real-life situations, which deepened my overall understanding. Additionally, by combining mathematical reasoning and creativity it made this unit became more enjoyable.

Unit 2 Reflection & Semester Check-In

Part 1: Unit 2 Topic A and B Test Reflection (Functions & Statistics)

A. Evidence of Your Best Thinking

Select two questions from your Unit 2 test that best show your thinking.

  1. I chose Question 2 as evidence of my best thinking because it shows my strong understanding of functions. I can correctly identify functions in point-slope form and slope-intercept form.
  1. I chose Question 3 as evidence of my best thinking because it shows my strong understanding of statistics and how to analyze a scatter plot. I can correctly identify the DOTS of a scatter plot and describe the graph.

B. Skills Reflection

Complete each sentence honestly and thoughtfully.

  1. Throughout Unit 2, I improved the most in the skills of describing a scatter plot and looking at residual plots to identify the line of best fit is relevant.
  1. One skill from this unit that I still need to work on is drawing the scatter plot while only knowing the residual plot.
  1. The biggest challenge for me on this assessment was the critical thinking part, where I forgot to write about causation versus correlation.
  1. One strategy that helped me on this test was remembering to write predicted, since the data from the predicted line of best fit is all predicted information, not confirmed.

Part 2: Goal Reflection & End-of-Semester Check-In

A. Looking Back at Your Last Goal

In the last unit, you set this goal: I want to consistently turn in all my assignments on time and keep track of my deadlines.

  1. How well did you work toward this goal?
X Very well ☐ Somewhat ☐ I struggled with this
  1. What helped you make progress toward this goal? I remembered to write all assignments and the due dates in my to-do list, and I looked at them every day.
  1. What got in the way of this goal (if anything)? Sometimes, when there are big projects and other work from other classes, it can be hard to finish everything.

B. End-of-Semester Self-Reflection

  1. List three strengths you have shown last semester:
    i. Able to solve proof problems and explain the thinking process
ii. Ability to collaborate effectively with classmates during group work.
iii. My persistence in trying out challenging problems
  1. List three areas you still want to improve:
    i. I hope to improve at checking my answers whenever I do homework.
ii. I want to enhance my understanding of critical thinking and remember to read the question carefully so that I don’t miss anything.
iii. I hope to use the class time more effectively and focus.

C. New Academic Goal Moving Forward

  1. In the next unit, I aim to improve my ability to read the question carefully so that I can include all the information asked in the question.
  1. What might get in the way of this goal? Sometimes I just assume that the question is asking for one thing, but that might not be the case.
  1. What will I do if I get stuck or need help? If I get stuck or need help, I would ask the teacher or anyone else available for clarification.

Health Unit 3: Identity and Healthy Relationship

In this unit, we learned about healthy relationships and identity. Our final project involved examining a relationship through the media and analyzing it. I analyzed he relationship between 葉湘倫 and 路小雨 from the movie 不能說的秘密(secret) by Jay Chou. The purpose of this project was to identify healthy and unhealthy traits of relationships. From my analysis, I learned about how relationships should include trust and honesty, instead of keeping secrets from each other, and then that leads to misunderstandings.

Most important ideas:
1. Identity: Different people have different identities, and we shouldn’t assume their identity and make gender stereotypes.
2. Healthy Relationships: Open and honest communication is essential for building trust and understanding in relationships.
3. Boundaries: Clear boundaries protect people from unwanted actions.

PE: Outdoor Invasion Games

During this unit, we practiced outdoor invasion games, and it was mostly soccer. Something that I did well was defense, because I wasn’t scared of the ball. Something that I need to improve on is teamwork, because I struggled to communicate with my teammates.

Health: Unit 2 Reflection

Mental Health

I used to usually get influenced by stigmatization and stereotypes, thinking mental health illness to be normal or fine. I also used to think that mental health conditions were rare and only affected a small and specific group of people. I thought that people with mental health issues were just simply not trying hard enough to overcome this issue. This perspective could be influenced by the media or a lack of personal experience.

Now, I understand that mental health can affect everybody, not just those with illnesses. My perspective changed, since I now understand that mental health is as important as physical health, and that everybody experiences mental health fluctuation. I learned about the importance of intervention for mental health and how supportive environments are important. This also helped me recognize that people with mental health illnesses are often beyond their own control. This understanding also helped me reflect on my own mental health behavior and the importance of self-care and seeking help when needed.

Final Project:

Math Unit 1 Reflection

Select two questions from the Unit 1 Celebration of Learning that reflect your best thinking in this unit:

1.    I chose question 8 as evidence of my best thinking because it is a critical thinking question, but it also tests my ability to prove triangle congruency, which shows my thinking really well.

2.    I chose L4 question 2 as evidence of my best thinking because it is a question about transformations, and it is more advanced. It requires us to find a solution ourselves, along with figuring out if the provided solution works.

3.    Throughout this unit, I improved the most at understanding the concepts of congruence and proofs, like triangle congruence and angle theorems.

4.    I feel that I still need to work on the concepts of transformations, like dilations, translations, and rotations.

5.    List three of your strengths so far this year:
i. Able to solve proof problems and explain the thinking process
ii. Ability to collaborate effectively with classmates during group work.
iii. My persistence in trying out challenging problems

6.    List three things you want to improve on in the next unit.
i. I hope to remember and note down the homework for every class, since sometimes there is multiple homework and I only note down one.
ii. I want to enhance my understanding of transformations by practicing more problems and visualizing them through drawings.
iii. I hope to use the class time more effectively and focus.

 7.    Create an academic goal by completing the sentences and answering the questions.

In the next unit, I want to consistently turn in all my assignments on time and keep track of my deadlines.

What might get in the way of this goal?
I might get messed up with multiple assignments and forget to check my planner, or forget to record the homework down.

What can I do if I get stuck or need help?
I can set reminders on my phone for due dates, ask my teacher for clarification on assignments

Semester 1 Active Learner Reflection

What is your current goal?
My current goal is to improve my skills in making improvements based on reflections as a learner.

What progress have you made towards your goal?
I have tried to make some changes to reflect on my past and plan for improvement.

What are you most proud of in this class so far?
I am proud of how I completed the handouts and understood the concepts from the first unit, and finished the final project well.

10.What has been your biggest challenge in this class?
My biggest challenge is that sometimes I am not able to complete the 3 for 3 tests well with a perfect score.

11.How have you demonstrated the qualities of an Active Learner — preparing effectively, participating fully, collaborating well, staying positive, and reflecting to improve?
Are there any areas where you want to grow or improve next quarter?
I have been preparing effectively and have all the class materials. I still need to improve on reflecting to improve, since I reflect but don’t usually use the feedback.

Orchestra: Winter Concert

During this time, when we prepared for our winter concert, we practiced many pieces and also practiced lots of strategies. We place classical music like Overture to Lucio Silla, and also different pieces with different styles. Ice sculptures and Carol of the Bells sounded like they had a story in the music. While practicing these pieces, we also practiced scales and different bow techniques. Spiccato was one big part of Overture to Lucio Silla, so we practiced this technique a lot. The teacher gave us some assignments and playing evaluations to see our progress in the music, which was helpful for our improvements and learning. The formative playing evaluations were a great chance for us to know what we need to improve and to play better for the summative.
