Unit 4 Dystopian Fiction Reflection

I learned from dystopian fiction that the world that we live in has multiple problems, multiple flaws but there are also a lot of nice things. If you want to make a perfect world then you have to take away those nice things in life that we need to have as humans.

Dystopian fiction makes me think that our world isn’t perfect. There is war and pain all of these things. But in the same way we have wonderful things like color and love.

I enjoyed The Giver because in the book the world that Jonas lived in is perfect. If you think about it nothing is wrong, everyone is healthy and everyone is happy. But, it also showed me how to embrace the things that we have in this world that they don’t. It showed a lot of feelings and touched the reader. They author wrote the book really well by building suspense and feeling. She made the reader think about the world that we live in and what could change to make our world perfect while making us feel like the people in the book live in a messed up world. I also liked the ending of the story because it didn’t give use a real conclusion. The author made use decide how the book ends.

This improved my ability to write academic paragraphs in the homework by making us write more and showed us examples and some feedback to improve on.

I have gotten better at being a literature discusser by having things prepared and learning how to

Math Bake Sale

What did I do?

I work on finding something to bake and found and calculated the weight of the ingredients along with what the price of my food. I also made posters for my food with math equations that got my result. finally I couldn’t make the food but I sold some apple pie.

What did I learn?

I learned how to work with the weights to transfer weight of a ingredient in the U.S system to the metric system. I also learned how to sell food.

What worked?

the math worked well for me with a lot of help from Mr. Merino. I worked well with the math and selling the products along with the poster makings.

What did not work?

I couldn’t make the food that I prepared due the the high level that it takes to make and the resources that I did not have in my hand at the time and now. I needed a lot of help from Mr. Merino and I had to do all the work alone.

Personal relevance

I think that it would help me in the future if I were working in a shop or if I had to sell something. Other than those I can’t think of anything else.

Unit 2 Otzi Unit Portfolio Reflection

  1. What did I work on?
  1. During this unit, ‘Why should we care about the past?’, I worked on
  1. Making observations, inferences and wonderings
  1. Using photos and articles as evidence
  1. Writing a CER paragraph
  1. Asking and answering open and closed questions
  1. Taking part in the Otzi Mock Trial, my role was an expert witness
  1. What did I learn? Why should we care about the past?
  1. We should care about the past because we should learn about what life was like in the past. What do people do every day. The lifestyle of the people in the past. What they used and what they valued.
  1. What worked well?
  1. I am proud of the following work, such as my CER paragraph, the prep work that I have done as an expert witness, and the final trial.
  1. I am proud of the work above because I worked hard for the prep and the answers to the questions that the lawyers are going to ask me. I loved being an expert witness and I think that I have done a great job acting as one. And in the trial, I answered every question perfectly.
  1. What did not work well?
  1. I found some of this work challenging, My mock trial Cer rough draft, the expert witness drafts and prep work, and my expert witness presentation.
  1. I found the work above challenging because in the CER rough draft I

didn’t work at my top and made weak reasonings and claims. I also need to work on my expert witness prep work and presentation because I think that I didn’t pay a lot of attention and put in my full effort.

  1. Personal Relevance
  1. Collaboration and communications skills are important in my future because I could work up and my communication skills will be higher and answer questions with logic and evidence and not with anger.
  1. This is a photo of my work about my CER’s

Balloon Car

We made a balloon car to see the distance it travels. It is made out of foam, plastic, tape, hot glue, weights, and a balloon. We used this to investigate Newton’s Law.

Newton’s first Law is how an object will stay at rest unless its acted upon an external force, or known as inertia. Newton’s second Law is in an equation F=ma which is also F is the net force, M is mass, and A is acceleration. Newton’s third and last Law is and action there is an equal and opposite reaction, you could also say action and reaction. This connects to the balloon car because it shows with Newton’s first Law how the balloon car is acted on the balloons air pumping out. it shows Newton’s second Law by showing how the more weights there are on the car the distance it travels is shorter, for the final law it connects t the car because when the balloon car pumps out the opposite force pushes it back but the force from the balloon is stronger.

We made our car really small so the opposite force has less power so we could go faster and further. We also filled the balloon as much as we could to put more force to it to accelerate faster and stronger. So we got really fast and thats what worked well.

What didn’t work well is how the balloon car went too fast and we couldn’t control it as too much force was put into the balloon and too much was let out so we lost power fast and moved even faster with too much energy let out. So if I wanted to fix this problem I will add less air and make the car larger.

This connects to our everyday life because Newton’s Laws are everywhere, and the car shows how force let out of a object could move and depends on how much you let out and how you let it out and use it.

Egg Car

The criteria for the Egg Car is to protect the Egg car from a fatal crash from a high ramp.

We see Newton’s 1st Law in action with the Egg Car when the car crashes into the wall and the car stops and doesn’t move unless acted upon. We see Newton’s 3rd Law in action with the Egg Car when the car hits the wall and the egg still wants to move.

The Egg Car the we made worked well because we made a strong seatbelt and crumple zone that helped the car survive.

What was not successful was how the egg kind of fell out of the car because of the force on the front pushed back the the middle of the car. To solve this problem I will make something to absorb the force.

It is important to know Newton’s Laws because the science is used to develop the understanding of how to be safe from a crash and the science in a vehicle which is shown Newton’s 1st and 3rd Laws and how it could keep us safe.

Portfolio Post Unit 2 – My Next Chapter

#puberty #health

Its important to know what will occur in puberty because if you don’t you won’t know what will happen and you will question yourself.

In the survival guide I found out that it is not just a L4. Its helping other people get ready for puberty. Its teaching people about puberty in a fun way. And I had fun making it

The change that I feel confident about is almost everything even the bad things like temper and the loss of friends but I know now that these are all just a part of puberty. But if I have to chose one then I would say temper, the reason being how i already have really bad temper and every year I learn a new way to solve it. I never argue with my parents and when I feel like something that they are doing is wrong I never show my temper in front of them.

The change that I feel most concerned about is how my body will change and I don’t think that I will accept that and how sometimes I just never want to grow up. I want to look like what I look now and feel what I feel now. I don’t want things to change and I think that it will take me a long time to accept the new me.

To see if the information online is safe and credible I only use the sources that we have on our website and if I do need to use a source outside of that I use many different ways to solve it like searching up the source and see if its safe and credible.

An aspect of my learning that I want to improve is to pay more attention in class so I know what will happen in the future and soI will know what I should be ready for and what I should get to be ready anytime puberty comes.

Creative Writing Reflection

What are we Doing?

Writing a fictional story based on a theme that matters to me.

What are we learning?

Theme (my purpose for writing this story, my message to readers)

Character Development (creating believable characters with positive & negative traits)

Plot (the sequence of events in my story; Western and Eastern approaches to storytelling)

Setting (the world that I create for my story)

What’s working?

My favorite element in my story that I enjoyed planning and writing was the plot twist when you tense the reader more and more. The story element that I’m proud of is the setting the story in which is in 1998. I did a lot of research but I could never get that feeling that you had during that time. I got the idea to make this story because I was watching a lot of old movies and a lot of them based around this kind of story telling. I like the parts where Dmitry says the 3 mistakes that he made.

Areas for growth?

It was hard to get the same things and feeling during 1998 New York. I tried to deal with this challenge by doing a lot of research, but I never seemed to get what life was like back then. The least favorite part of the story is the end because I had very little time to finish it so I just rushed it through.

Personal relevance?

I don’t think that this will be that important me in the future but I love writing this and using my imagination. But for sure this will be a hobby and there is a chance of me being an author.

Science Critical Thinking

What did I do?

I played with Gravitrax and with indi robot cars to improve my critical thinking skills.

What did I learn?

Critical thinking is how you think when you have the questions, “What do I know about this, And what did I do or learn to know this,”

What worked?

I used many different ways to solve the problems that failed in my work.

What did not work?

I struggled to work with my partners because we all have different opinions on how to do things and how not. I struggled when we were working on the Gravitrax because when I wanted higher builds they wanted to stay low and safe.

Personal Relevance

Todays learning is like the everyday life, you always have to make decisions in your everyday life sometimes you make good decisions other times you don’t but you know what to do the next time. Todays learning will help me make smarter decisions as a student. And to keep working even when I make a bad decision.

Fiction reading-Character analysis

What are we Doing?

We are working on analyzing characters and writing paragraphs of their main or important traits. Determining important character traits.

What are we learning?

How to analyze character traits based on evidence (character’s actions, words, thoughts, and other Character’s reactions.)

What’s working?

I can identify a characters strong and weak, good and bad traits.

Areas for growth?

I think that I need to work on the

Personal relevance?

My brother is sometimes, somewhat is narcissistic at times. But at other times he buys me snacks, buys me things, teaches me what to do and what not to do, etc. He takes care of our mom and dad.

Nonfiction Writing Reflection-Paragraph structure

What are we Doing?

We are working on analyzing characters and writing paragraphs of their main or important traits.

What are we learning?

I learned of the burger method where you have to work on the topic sentence, supporting sentence, and the conclusion.

What’s working?

I know how to make a powerful conclusion and evidence to support my main ideas.

Areas for growth?

I think that I can take more notes in my story but I always get to into the story and don’t want to take any notes.

Personal relevance?

In the future when I write about my self for a job applications and when a work on assays.
