We learn more from mistakes than success

Designing a Story Problem Project

Q1. Describe your story and what real-life situation it modeled?
My story was about minions on a mission and they snuck into a hot air balloon. The graph modeled the altitude of the hot air balloon over time. The story became more entertaining through what happened to the minions on the hot air balloon. I researched the speed and altitude of a hot air balloon for the project so the numbers are very accurate.

Q2. What part of your project are you most proud of? Why?
Q3. What was the hardest part of creating your piecewise function?

I am most proud of my graph because the hot air balloon went above the atmosphere for a very high altitude, (26,400ft) it was hard for me to draw the graph. However, because I put a lot of effort into it, I am proud of the graph. It also clearly shows the story.

Q4. If you could revise one part of this project, what would you improve and how?
If I could revise one part of the project, I would use more diverse forms in order to write the function for the line that suits the problem more. I would use a mix of slope-intercept form and point-slope form and contemplate more about which form suits which line.

Q5. What did this project help you understand better about piecewise functions?
I learned that piecewise functions have many parts to it and it may be actually quite interesting if we make it interesting.

DT Robotics Unit

During our DT unit, we got to build our own robots, even though our gear ratio was really good, it moved too fast that it didn’t move well. However, the whole unit was about reflecting, so I think I did a pretty good job evaluating. We recorded the process of what we changed and how we did on the actual test in the process journal. One of the races was wall racer where we had to code. We nearly succeeded, but it kept hitting the edges and didn’t come back. Our second challenge was a clawbot where we had to lift up cubes. In this challenge, I had new partners, but our gear ratio was wrong again, and our robot didn’t turn so that was another area to improve on. I think I learned a lot about gear ratio and robots in this unit.

DT Box Unit

In the DT box unit we had to go through the whole design process to build a hygienic tissue box. The art style I chose was art nouveau and it took me a long time to brainstorm ideas since it was hard to connect art nouveau with ocean and sea creatures. I made my design on Inkscape when Mr.Hatt commented that it didn’t look “art nouveau” enough, then it took me a whole two-three classes to actually think of a way to make it more nouveau-ish with the help of AI. After I finished inkscaping, I was able to laser cut the box and it actually looked descent. It took me a long time since there were many colors and leaves I had to color. I stayed after school sometimes to finish my tissue box and glue it. After I did this, I asked my peers and my client(Mr.Hatt) to evaluate my tissue box, and there are more details about the process in the process journal. Even though it took me a lot of time, I am proud of my tissue box.

Portfolio Artifact for ELA Socratic Seminar

Why did I choose this artifact?
I chose this artifact because it shows if I participated in the conversations in a balanced way. Also, the data was very clear of what I did and I thought it was the easiest for others to interpret, so I chose this artifact.

What does this show about me as a communicator?
My speaking frequency was 4 times, and the class average was 4 times, suggesting that my contribution to the class discussion was average and it was balanced compared to others. However, my time spoken was 01:26 (min: sec) when the class average was 55 seconds. This shows that I need to speak less in order to give people who didn’t speak as much an opportunity to speak.

Reflection on Swimming and Soccer

In swimming, we learned how to do water polo. We learned how to pass and catch a ball with one hand, how to tread water, swim without a goggle etc. I improved by actually defending a ball when it came to me. It was kind of scary. I need to work on my passing skills because I always caught the ball but couldn’t give it to my teammate.

In soccer, we learned how to pass and dribble. The area that I most improved was in passing because I somehow passed to my teammate midair once, and my passing accuracy increased. I need to work on dribbling because most of the time I didn’t dribble at all.

Science Semester 1 Active Learner Reflection

What is your current goal?
My current goal is to pay more attention in class in order to fully understand what we learned during class.

What progress have you made towards your goal?
I think I did a pretty good job to not talk to my peers, and also random seating was a big part of it because since I am now away from my friends, it is harder for me to talk to them and get distracted.

What are you most proud of in this class so far?
I am most proud of my growth in learning because I didn’t really know anything before I started the unit, but after the unit I fully understood what the differences of meteor, meteorite, and meteoroid along with connecting the waves to the concept of space rocks. I am also very proud of the interactive model because I added animations so that they would move.

What has been your biggest challenge in this class?
My biggest challenge is managing time because most of the time I bring my project home and I work on most of it at home. Ex. when I had to do my meteor model, I had to do the animations at home and it was time-consuming.

How have you demonstrated the qualities of an Active Learner? Are there any areas where you want to grow or improve next quarter?
When I was gone for some lessons, I always asked Ms. Neal what they learned that day to fill in what I missed. I want to improve on being more productive during class and finish my work that I was supposed to do.

Math Unit 1 Sticker project reflection

The first picture is the sticker blueprint where I wrote all the points down with prime notation. The second picture is the final design where we voted for the top 3 stickers that will actually get printed out. I liked how we could come up with our own design by using geometry and transformations. I also liked how there was a set template and many examples that helped us understand better about the project because at first it was very sudden and kind of confusing.

I wish that the instructions were clear from the start so we actually had an idea of what we were doing. It was kind of complex to come up with our own sticker designs which actually could be made from transforming different shapes.

Math Unit 1 Reflection and Goal Setting

I chose question 2a as evidence of my best thinking because I detailedly explained why (1,7) is the center of dilation using the vocabulary like projection lines and corresponding.

I chose question 8 as evidence of my best thinking because I successfully identified the imposter and stated the congruency statement for the other three with evidence that was provided.

Throughout this unit, I improved the most at nearly everything because all the math concepts I learned this unit was mostly new concepts. If I look at the pre assessment I didn’t know how to describe a sequence. For example, dilations. However, in my COL, I successfully identified the center of dilations and explained, correctly dilating and describing sequences for rotations, translations, reflections, and dilations.

I feel that I still need to work on reading the question carefully because it said to describe a sequence which is multiple transformations, but I just did a dilation which is not a sequence.

One strength I had during class was critical thinking because with Momo and Isabella, we thought of a single mapping rule for a reflection for any vertical or horizontal line and .

List three things you want to improve on in the next unit.
1. Read carefully
2. Don’t get distracted
3. Use vocabulary learned in class

In the next unit, I want to read the question more carefully,

What might get in the way of this goal?
The set time for the assignment, which causes me to rush and not read the questions.

What can I do if I get stuck or need help?
I can ask Ms.Baldwin a question, or ask her if she can read the question for me because then she would read the whole thing for me unlike me who would just skim through the questions and look at the numbers.

Orchestra Unit 1

The two pieces above are some of the pieces we are playing in our winter concert. Along with the two, we are also playing overture to Lucio cilla which is a classical piece. I decided to not play bass this time for 8th grade but instead play for 6th grade which is a lot of extra work. We worked on our bow hold and spiccato bow strokes during class. The piece carol of the bells gives a very Christmasy mood and Ice sculptures remind audiences of winter. Our winter concert is on November 25th so we are practicing our pieces constantly.

ELA Unit 1 Reflection

The first unit of ELA was first contact. During the first unit we learned grammar through a simulation where we interacted with the alien and taught it grammar. During this process, we learned about shades of meaning, different parts of speech, and sentence structures. I am proud of successfully teaching my alien English because I struggled a little bit when teaching the alien to speak in sentences. Now, the alien uses more advanced vocabulary and can detailedly explain their situation. A growth that happened was to be able to edit the alien’s words to have more shades of meaning. Before I learned about shades of meaning, I used vague words. However, after I learned shades of meaning I could upgrade the words to another word that suits the mood of the paragraph more. The first picture above is the paragraph that my alien wrote, and the second picture is an alien of interest poster that advertises the alien’s situation.
