Knowledge is power

Unit 2 Reflection & Semester Check-In

Part 1:

A – I choose Question 1 (L3 Critical Thinking) as evidence of my best thinking, because I was able to consider the fact that there is no guarantee of a rise in grades, but the correlation coefficient is moderately strong, so the school should consider introducing a music listening program. I choose Question 3 (L3: Statistics) as evidence of my best thinking, because in this question I was able to completely describe the graph using DOTS.

B – Throughout Unit 2 I improved the most at using correlation coefficients to determine the strength of relationships, and inferring what numbers mean in context. One skill from this unit I need to work on is being able to graph residual plots. The biggest challenge for me on this assessment was question 6 (L4), because I wasn’t sure how to create a scatter plot based on a residual plot. One strategy that helped me on this test was writing out all the important given information so I could reference it.

Part 2:

A – Last unit I set the goal of trying some math extensions. I think I completed my goal somewhat well, because I did some questions that seemed quite challenging for me at first. Something that helped me make progress towards my goal was the choice board options, because we were able to choose which option we wanted to start with. I think something that got in the way of my goal is insufficient time to learn the concepts and then adding onto them with extended exercises.

B – 3 strengths I have shown is being organized, submitting assignments on time, and being able to collaborate well with others. 3 areas I would like to improve is not spending too much time on a certain question during a test, double checking my work and reading the questions carefully (drawing diagrams when possible).

C – In the next unit I want to make less mistakes due to carelessness. Something that might get in the way of this goal is limited time or feeling that is unnecessary to double check my work. If I get stuck I think I should remind myself that I often get partial correct because I am not careful enough when reading the question and checking my work.

Designing a Story Problem (Piecewise Function Project)

My story was about a girl named Haley, who liked to stan idols, and it’s the story of her journey to Korea to watch a concert. It models the real life situation of watching a concert (the flight costs, the actual ticket costs, hotel costs, food costs, etc.) I am most proud of the piecewise functions we created, because before the project I had absolutely no idea what a piecewise function is, and although we did make some mistakes, I think we tried really hard and collaborated well. The hardest part of creating our piecewise function was finding the point for the negative part of the function, because we had to find the negative point and work upwards. If I could revise the project, I would make sure that the lines described by our functions actually pass through the points we mentioned. This project helped me to better understand what a piecewise function is and how to create one.

 Mixed Media Self-Portrait

I want my audiences see me, both the more surface parts and the more core parts that make up me. I communicated this by using a trail of yarn to connect all my symbols that represent me. The audience will first notice my self portrait, and they may notice the light blue yarn. The second thing they will notice is the border collie , which is a more surface part of me (I really love dogs and I have always wanted a border collie). However, at the same time it shows a core trait that I value a lot: loyalty. Under the dog, there is a cut out of a line regarding dance, that is the most surface level symbol, it’s simply what I enjoy doing. As the yarn goes up, the symbols get deeper. The next symbol is a weight, which represents justice and fairness. Further up, there are several (5) interlocking circles that show honesty and trust. At the very top, there is a ball of yarn, this ball of yarn is what “unraveled to become me”, symbolizing that although the neatness and order of the yarn has become unraveled, it has become something new and meaningful.

The most important risk I took was putting the yarn going across canvas, I was debating whether or not to put the self portrait on first. I knew that if I put my self portrait second, it would uneven, but I wanted the effect that under my outside appearance there was a lot to me. Eventually, I decided that it wouldn’t matter that much, and even if it did end up looking imperfect, it would fit my idea better, because nothing is perfect and there are wrinkles (negative parts) to everything.

PE Swimming Unit

For the swimming unit, I think I improved the most on head up swimming, such as freestyle, and breaststroke. When I first tried it, it seemed pretty impossible to keep my head up whilst swimming, but over the lessons I developed the skill. I’m surprised to find that it is actually not that hard to accomplish.

Kool Koor Artistic Choices

  1. After meeting Kool Koor, I have discovered that the environment in Bronx influenced his art to start out as “explosive” and bold. The 1970s and 80s graffiti environment was fast paced, it was all about quickly spreading messages. It was risky and valued speed, because there as the risk of getting caught by the police. This caused his style to be full of dynamic movement with bold colors and abstract shapes, and all the graffiti at the time to present bold statements. This environment impacted his artwork deeply. Even now, even though his artwork is more controlled, the same elements and principles of art remains. His art is still large and bold with the colors popping out.
  2. I think the change of environment will impact an artist’s work a lot. For Kool Koor, he said he was inspired by the sound of his surroundings, and the sound of daily life. Originally, on the street there would be bustling people and lots of sounds and noises of daily life. However, in the studio, there would be less of these, which means potential lessening of creativity, and artistic blocks. I felt these influences when trying his painting style, because although it was still bold and bright, but it was more controlled, and quieter.
  3. I think my environment will be reflected in my art, because China’s culture is more orderly and with a lots of rules. This will be shown in my art by a ball of yarn that is properly rolled up, very neatly. However, I also think I am also impacted by my school environment, which to me is very chaotic and loud. This aspect is going to be represented by an unraveled ball of yarn, which would represent more freedom and chaos. I (my self portrait) would probably be somewhere in the middle, I am a mixture of my surrounding environments and my own identity.

Semester 1 Active Learner Reflection

My progress on my new goal is not the best. I have been responding louder when prompted, but I need to work on responding as soon as I should be, because my class often has to be told twice to respond.

I am the most proud of my science L3 model from the first unit, because I think I fully explained all the concepts we learned during the unit. Although, my writing could have been more concise, I incorporated all the things required in my model.

My biggest challenge originally was reviewing well, I know this because I wasn’t doing great on my 3 for 3s. However, as of now I think I have improved on reviewing, as my scores have been improving, I hope I can keep being consistent with my 3s.

I prepare effectively for class and I collaborate well ,am positive, and reflect to improve. However, I think I can participate more fully by raising my hand more to answer questions.

Math: Unit 1 Reflection and Goal setting

I choose the critical thinking question (8) as evidence of my best thinking, because the thinking needed for a critical thinking question can sufficiently show how well I have been learning and thinking and questioning throughout this unit. The question is to identify the “imposter” triangle, or the one that is not congruent with the others. I was able to identify that triangle JKL was the imposter through elimination.

I choose question 2a of the level 4 optional section as evidence of my best thinking, because in this question, I demonstrated that I am able to think of a sequence of transformations in different orders.

Throughout this unit, I improved the most at remembering the notation aspects, such as prime notation and the ‘maps to’ sign. I had some trouble remembering this at first, because I didn’t think it would be that important, but throughout the unit, I realized that proper notation is very important.

I feel like I still need to work on more difficult transformations, such as negative dilations and rotating around a non-origin point. With negative dilation, I often flip the shape the wrong way, and end up very far from where the correct image should be.

My strengths:

  1. I can understand the material fairly well, and I can work on lessons I don’t understand by practicing problems related to that class’s concepts.
  2. I can collaborate with others well, I always contribute and can help lead the group if needed.
  3. I am organized and have brought all the materials I needed to class with me every time for this unit.

My weaknesses:

  1. I often don’t feel confident enough to aim higher and try out more challenging options, so I want to try my best to attempt some extensions next unit.
  2. I want to improve on my explanations to make them more accurate, because I have seen that a lot of my answers are partially correct. I want to improve on this and have less partial correct answers for the next col.
  3. I can improve on my working speed, sometimes I don’t finish my work before the end of class, making it homework. Therefore, I wish to improve on the speed that I work, and hopefully finish before the end of each class.

In the next unit I want to attempt some extensions if I think that I understand the concept well enough. I might not be sure enough about my knowledge of a concept to try an extension. I can just attempt some extensions at home if I really want to try them, and I can always ask for help at school to understand the extension material better.

Unit 1: First Contact

I learned many new things during this unit of learning, and not just grammar and vocabulary. This unit inspired me to think about the power that languages have. Languages are not just a way for people to communicate, they are a bridge to express ideas and create shared understandings. Languages are also big parts of the culture in which they are spoken, and when speaking different languages, people often seem to embody different personalities. This is due to the different “feelings” that people get when speaking different languages. When people fluently speak a language, they form a special bond with, this language now possesses emotional meaning as well just simply literal meaning. This is sort of like connotation and denotation, which is another area that I have learnt a lot in. For their definitions, connotations are the emotional attachments to a word, and denotations are the dictionary definitions of words.

In the artifact above, I have demonstrated my understanding of connotation and denotation through annotating the paragraph. I put denotations for most of the words, but what truly demonstrated my comprehension of these two concepts are 2 points (vague or weak word choice). The first word that I think an unsuitable word choice is “designed”, designed gives a negative connotation, because it makes the alien seem like a machine programmed for a specific reason, and only for that reason. A better word for designed would be entrusted, showing that the alien is a reliable and humble servant of the power that sent it. The second word choice I originally thought was unfitting was map, and I thought a more suitable word would be devise. Because, map is recording information that already exists, and devise is to create. However, I now understand that map is a better word choice, as the information in context already exists.

The Impact of Exhibitions

I believe that an exhibition can influence our ideas and experiences, but in cannot fully destroy or create beliefs. Beliefs are formed over time, from the repeated realisation of an idea, so I theorize that it would be impossible to completely form or destroy a belief. What an exhibition can do however is to plant the idea of a new belief, cause doubt to an old belief, or strengthen an existing belief.

The picture above was my original thoughts about the answer to this question, and I do think they are right, but I feel that they do not completely express what I want to communicate. For the lesson about how artwork always has artistic intentions behind them, I think that is more of a belief. Even with the artwork that taped a banana on a wall I think it had artistic intentions in that it questioned what was considered art, and it also proved that people would be willing to pay for anything made by someone famous, sort of similar to Banksley’s concept. It also strengthened the my belief in that you can learn a lot just studying different art exhibitions and fully experiencing art.

For how these ideas, beliefs, and experiences are communicated to the audience, we would have to take a look at the curation and artistic intentions of the exhibitions. I still believe that most of the ideas present in an exhibition come from the artists in the form of their artworks, and that curators work with those ideas to create the immersive and awakening experience of the exhibition itself. I think this because, anyone could just put a bunch of random artworks together, but to really make everything seem coherent and the entire thing to tell a story or a central idea, you would need to really think and plan out precisely where each artwork would be.

The photo of the El Anatsui wrap up question, connects to what I said about artists bringing ideas to an exhibition, and for El Anatsui’s ideas, it’s mostly centralized on thinking about artwork that you see and being curious, in addition to integrating his culture into his art. These ideas were probably seen by the curator, and worked with to present the world and the waves by each other, and the wall by itself (although El Anatsui may have curated himself). This placement makes me feel that the wall is placed alone, not just because of it’s huge size but also because the wall represents solidarity and the feeling of loneliness , whilst the world and the wave seem more about connection and unity.

For the paths of modernity wrap up questions, I feel like it is a good representation of curation working with artist ideas, because I feel like the artworks are arranged in the way of a chronological order almost, and it keeps the audience interested, because the artwork flows well.
