Dystopian Fiction:The Giver

What Did I Do?

I learned about the dystopian Fiction by writing academic paragraphs related to the text.

What Did I learn?

Building Vocabulary, Writing academic paragraphs , using transition words, and having academic collaborative discussions.

What Worked?

Thing that I am extremely proud of are the things like my group academic discussions because I feel like I contributed a lot to those discussions and I really liked how my discussions turned out because they were really insightful and fun to do.

What Did Not Work?

Some things that were pretty challenging were also during the discussion groups because the people who disagreed with me always ended up in a whole debate which expended a lot of our already little time.

Personal Relevance?

These skills will help me a lot to achieve my goals in life because having the skills to respectfully disagree are incredibly important because I can disagree with someone without causing a huge problem or rift between us.

RollerCoaster L4 Lab And Model

The entire class first created a lab report based on information we’ve learned to try to predict the outcome of our rollercoaster. Then we built the model to collect data. we collected data from the model and then wrote a conclusion with the CER paragraph formatting.

Math Bake Sale

What Did We Do?

We made Fried Chicken for the bake sale. The Bake Sale is our end of unit project to demonstrate our understanding of rates and percents. We decided to make fried chicken for the bake sale so we had to use our knowledge of rates and percents to find out how much money we needed for the ingredients, and how much money we needed to make to make a profit, etc.

What Did We Learn?

Things we learned were how to markup prices and how to find our final sell price or how to find the unit prices, etc. We learned how to do these things so we could find out was is an acceptable price or how much money is it for a gram of pepper or something else.

What Worked?

Some parts of this project that I am proud of is that how the chicken turned out because this is the first time I made fried chicken. I was also surprised at how much money we made because I expected a lot less income because we spent so much money on pepper but after we decided to increase our prices we made much more money.

What Did Not Work

One thing that I believe that we could do better at is make more money because just the pepper alone cost 1/4 of the entire budget so I think that we could’ve worked on getting slightly cheaper ingredients.

Personal Relevance

During the making of this project I learned how to cook which would greatly help my everyday life in the future, Because now I have an ayi but in the future when I don’t have an ayi I would be able to cook for myself.

Ötzi Unit II Reflection

What Did I Work On?

I worked on how to write a C.E.R paragraph I also worked on answering and asking open and closed questions. The C.E.R paragraph is super important because it helps me form strong paragraphs and reasoning because of the format. asking and answering closed and open questions is also super important to learn during this unit because I could limit the amount of information someone says so the evidence would rule in my favour.

What Did I Learn?

I learned that we should care about the past because in the past people also make mistakes but if we care about the past and study it, we could learn to alter a course of certain doom because someone else has made the same mistake before so people can learn from the mistake and not make it again. Caring about the past also has another benefit, because we can find hidden cultures and practices which might be able to benefit modern civilizations and societies.

What Worked Well

My C.E.R paragraph writing went well because learning the formatting of C.E.R I’ve learned to write longer paragraphs with more evidence and stronger reasoning. For example, the C.E.R paragraph formatting helped me write my closing speech for the mock trial. I’m proud of learning this formatting style because it is something new that I’ve never heard of before, but I still managed to work with it so I’m super proud of my achievement.

What Did Not Work

Something that I need to improve on is that I need to ask better open and closed questions because during the mock trial my questions were not specific enough, so the expert witnesses just started babbling some random things. I also need to work on my answer predictions because I expected something close to what the articles said but the expert witnesses said something completely different, so I need to work on my answer predictions as well.

Personal Relevance

These skills that I have learned throughout this unit are crucial for my future because these skills would prove to be important throughout my life like writing C.E.R paragraphs so I can write longer paragraphs and stronger reasoning, or asking open and closed questions so I can get the information out of a person without revealing too much to the other side of the argument. This is why I believe that these skills I’ve learned throughout this unit is super important.

Egg Car Challenge Reflection

What Did I Do?

The criteria of the Egg Car challenge is to make an Egg Car with only three sheets of paper, wheels and axels, and 1 meter of tape. That is able to protect the egg from breaking upon impact from the concrete.

What Did I learn?

I learned that Newton’s laws are useful when applied into real world projects, for example our Car was very light because the more mass an object has the faster it accelerates on a ramp so we designed the car to be as weightless as possible, this is an example of the law of acceleration, because normally the heavier an object the slower it goes, but because the car is going down the ramp it gets pulled down by gravity and the heavier a thing is the faster it accelerates because gravity pulls the heavier object down faster. Another example of Newton’s laws at play is when the car crashes into the concrete and the egg flies out because of it’s inertia that is also the reason our egg cracked because the inertia of the egg was to strong it flew forward despite our box, the egg still cracked itself.

What Worked?

Two thing that worked with our design is that the box we made was like a compartment to stop the egg from going forward after the car crashed which worked to some extent. Another design feature that worked was elevating our compartment so that the egg faces less force when crashing.

What Did Not Work?

A part of our design that did not work was the crumple zone because we shredded it to make it not that stiff but it just didn’t work altogether letting the impact hit the car and the egg directly which caused some of the cracks on the egg’s body.

Personal Relevance

This relates to my personal life a lot because first of all, now I know how cars are tested for safety. I also learned about Newton’s laws through this experiment which would greatly increase my understanding of the natural world, so now I understand how the world works.

Balloon Cart Investigation Reflection

What Did I Do?

The Balloon Car was built using a styrofoam base and a few axels, We used it to learn about Newton’s Laws. The criteria of the investigation was to use 2 straws and 1 styrofoam base along with 1 balloon and the wheels and the axels to make a Cart that went the farthest the fastest. We investigated how weight affects the distance an object travels with the same amount of force and we also investigated how the amount of air inside the balloon affect the distance and speed it travels.

What Did I Learn?

Newton’s first law says “An object at rest tends to stay at rest and an object in motion tends to stay in motion unless acted upon by an unbalanced force.” We see this law in action when the balloon cart wasn’t moving it didn’t move until an unbalanced force the air inside the balloon pushed it. Newton’s second law says “The more mass an object had the more force it requires to push it.” We see this law in motion when we added weights into the cart and it went slower and shorter. Newton’s third law says “Every action has an equal and opposite reaction.” We see this law in action when the cart bumped into a wall and the wall pushed it back with an equal amount of force.

What Worked?

Collaborating with a partner went well because my partner and I worked really well and completed all our tasks. We had to make the car together which went really well for us because we put our ideas all together and made a very good car. So I believe we worked together really well and completed our tasks with efficiency and quality.

What Did Not Work?

It was a struggle when our balloon cart was not going the fastest or the farthest. Another problem that we had was that our cart was breaking down too frequently. To solve these problems we decided to take the best parts from the best carts like the big straw as the motor so we went farther and we also used tape not glue so we can repair it easier so we worked together to solve these problems.

Personal Relevance

The Balloon Car challenge challenged my critical thinking skills and my skills to solve problems when faced with one which is super useful for when I need to solve any type of problem so by doing this challenge I’ve grown my skills once more. I also learned about Newton’s laws through this challenge which will help me throughout the highschool (Probably).

French Unit 1 Project Reflection

The Task was to create a Powerpoint, Canva, Or a Video about a french speaking country, I chose to create Canva presentation on Switzerland. The things we needed to do were quite simple like introduce the culture of the country we chose introduce some places and a little more.

I chose to research about the culture of Switzerland finding many interesting facts like it’s national holidays and beautiful castles and cities. I chose this country because I’ve always liked Switzerland for no reason.

In my presentation I mentioned a few things like the design of Switzerlands flag, places to visit in Switzerland and it’s national holiday.

My teacher has told me that “It’s a good presentation Joshua. You meet all requirements. You shared accurate information about Suisse using the previous vocabulary and Grammar we studied in class. I think you could have organized a bit more your ideas/pictures to allow more clarity. I appreciate that you translated for your classmate the words you researched such as Depuis / croix. In the case Men and women FROM Suisse, you can’t use Depuis. You need to use DE Les hommes De suisse.”

I am proud of myself for putting effort into this presentation, but some areas of improvement can maybe be to use more slides because I kind of jammed everything into only 3 slides.

Creative Writing Reflection

What are we doing?

What are we doing?

Writing a fictional story based on a theme that matters to me.

What are we learning?

Theme (my purpose for writing this story, my message to readers)

Character Development (creating believable characters with positive & negative traits)

Plot (the sequence of events in my story; Western and Eastern approaches to storytelling)

Setting (the world that I create for my story)

What’s Working:

What story elements did you enjoy planning and writing? I enjoyed making the setting and the antagonists in my story because overall it was very interesting.

What elements of my story are you proud of? I am proud of the setting of the story which my story heavily relied on to make the entire story make sense and move forward.

How did you get the idea for your story? I was inspired by the book Gregor the Overlander and The Unstable SMP (It’s Staged) Minecraft Storyline and combined some of my favourite parts of each story like the betrayal.

The Best Line from My Story: My favourite part of my story is the part where the city the main character was defending with his life got bombed into smithereens.

Areas for Growth:

What story elements were challenging to plan and write? I personally think that the character development was the hardest to write.

How did you deal with these challenges? I just kept on writing and tried my best

What is your least favorite part of the story?  Why does it bother you? My least favourite part of the story is when I made Bubba reject the application to the bad guys because he needed to be a good guy since he’s kind.

Personal Relevance:

How can creative writing help you in real life (even if you’re not planning on becoming an author)? It can help me become more creative and help me make more decisions more confidently.

Do you enjoy creative writing – would you possibly like to continue using your imagination to tell stories that matter to you? I enjoy it but I don’t intend to continue to tell stories.

Growth And Development Unit 2 Reflection

Why Is It Important To Understand The Changes during puberty?

It is important to understand the changes during puberty because you might get and feel different emotions, and if you don’t understand what’s happening to your emotions and your body you might feel angry for no reason so you’ll think you’ve gone insane or something.

What Is The Change You Feel Most Confident About?

I feel most confident about my voice deepening because it won’t really change anything about myself other than the way I talk.

What Is The Change You Feel Most Concerned about?

The most concerning part about puberty is nothing because I’m not afraid.

When Looking For Information Online, How Can You Ensure It’s Credible And Appropriate

Always turn on safe search on Google and try to find websites that are trustworthy and official.

What Is One Aspect Of Your Learning You Want To Improve On Working Forward

I want to manage the amount of things I say because I talk too much. So I can become a better listener and a better collaborator in general.

This is my end of unit project

Critical Thinking Activity In Science

What Did I Do?

I used my critical thinking skills to complete challenges with Indi Robot cars and build rollercoasters with Gravitrax

What Did I Learn?

I learned about how I would be graded for critical thinking. Critical thinking is my ability to solve problems and make the right decisions.

What Worked?

using my Critical Thinking skills worked for me very well because I used it to help me better understand and fix mistakes in the Gravitrax and indie cars.

What Did Not Work

Everything worked well because I’m built different

Personal Relevance

Developing my Critical thinking skills is super important to solve future problems which may include some of the following business decisions, time management and taxes.
