Weather vs Climate, Ocean Currents, Climate Change & Greenhouse Effect

Unit 4 – Earth and Human Activity

Ecosystem Dynamics (food web), Synthetic vs Natural, Resources and Consumption

Unit 5 – Designing Solutions (Shark Tank)

Using SDGs to create a service or product that can benefit the environment or reduce something that impacts the environment

Progress (improvement) in organization

My science notebook is an organized artifact that will be very useful during the school year, as using the details of each topic, I can easily revise for each test.

Evidence of Growth in Science Skills

Since arriving during winter break, I have adapted to the curriculum and significantly improved my science skills. Additionally, I have improved my Obtaining, Evaluating, and Communicating Information skills.

Graphic Organizer #1

This was an activity where we had to brainstorm our ideas for the SharkTank. They each had to be sustainable and beneficial to the environment. Here, we further explained what each idea was about and the goals for each one.

Graphic Organizer #2

The graphic organizer #2 was added onto graphic organizer #1. We had to choose the 2 best ideas that we were passionate about and that were viable and sustainable. We then had to elaborate on the original ideas by researching similar products that were already on the market and thinking of improvements. We then had to think about ways to minimize the impact on the environment and how the product must work in the real world and make a profit.

Personal Project 4.0

My passion project is about tennis mind games.

Tennis mind games focus on the psychological strategies players use to gain an advantage over their opponents. These tactics, such as bluffing and mental manipulation, play a crucial role in the dynamics of the game. My passion project explores how these elements influence player performance and match outcomes. By examining various techniques and their effects, I aim to deepen my understanding of the mental aspects that can define success in tennis.

Core Subject: Social Studies 🌏

I will now share my progress in Social Studies…

This was a project that explained the migration of my mom.

  • Push/Pull Factors
  • Physical/Human Characteristics
  • Perspective Change

Through this project, I improved my research skills by gathering information on migration trends and experiences. I also enhanced my ability to analyze and synthesize information, connecting her personal story to broader cultural contexts. Finally, I developed my writing skills by articulating complex ideas in a clear and engaging way.

In this excerpt, Lee Chew shared his first-person account as a Chinese person who moved to the US in the promise of economic opportunities and went through the Chinese immigration act. We were supposed to analyze the key points of his account. I included Lee Chew’s account to illustrate the complexities of the immigrant experience, emphasizing the challenges and resilience faced by Chinese migrants. Through this analysis, I improved my skills in critical thinking and synthesis, allowing me to connect personal narratives to broader societal issues effectively.

Unit 5

  • Economics and Profit (for shark tank)

Core Subject: Math 🧮

I gained the skill of combining math with a story. This develops vocabulary and applies skills and knowledge (math-related) into contexts. A mathematical story is not the same as a word problem. Mathematical stories are literary stories (that include beginning, climax, the process when you solve the problem, and a conclusion) with a maths theme that can be explored. It allows children to reinforce skills they are learning by applying their knowledge in other ways, not just through calculations and problem solving.

The challenge I faced was trying to make an equation into a question. This was difficult because I could not determine the relationship between the known and unknown quantities using keywords. I overcame this question by starting with an easier question involving linear equations, then gradually building my way up to form a question about quadratic functions. I also had issues with the lack of time. Although I had stayed organized and had worked effectively, I did not have enough time to finish the story and explain the answer/ other factors thoroughly. Because of this, I stayed back in class (for example during lunch) and worked at home to complete this.

This shows my progress in math because before coming to SAS, I did not know how to combine a math problem with a story. After completing this, I am now aware of the steps of doing this. This shows my growth as a critical thinker (thinking in which you question, analyse, interpret) and somewhat as a creative learner.

I chose this artifact to include in my portfolio because this (so far in SAS math) demonstrated the most growth to me, both personally and learning-wise, as it conveyed both the value of critical thinking and creative learning.

This is an example of how I improved in organization. I began structuring my work by clearly labeling each part of the assignment. For example, I labeled the equations and their respective graphs, making it easier to follow my thought process. I broke down problems into smaller, manageable steps. By showing my work clearly, I can easily track my progress and identify any mistakes. I ensured that my graphs were neat and included all necessary details, such as axes and points. This visual organization made it easier to interpret the data.

Unit 3 – Linear Function

Unit 4 – Systems of Equations and Inequalities

Core Subject: Language Arts 📖

This assignment was about motivational speeches. The main purpose of my speech was to inspire perseverance. Looking back at what I wrote, I feel like I captured the main message of the speech well—perseverance and pushing through setbacks. Writing it made me think more deeply about how often we view failure as a stopping point when it’s really just part of the process. I liked how I connected Michael Jordan’s story to a broader lesson. That example really stuck with me because it showed that even the most successful people have faced rejection. While I initially just saw him as a legend, hearing about his struggles made his success feel more real and achievable. One thing I might improve is expanding on how the speech made me feel personally. I touched on how it made me reflect, but I could have added a specific moment where I applied perseverance in my own life. That would have made the response feel even more personal and connected.

I learned a lot about body language and eye contact, but I also recognize that we didn’t demonstrate our skills as effectively as we could have. Reading off a script hindered our ability to connect with the audience and showcase my understanding of impromptu speaking. I realized that effective delivery requires not just information about what to do but also the ability to engage with listeners through eye contact and gestures, which we did not show. Despite the challenges, we understood what pacing, tone, and impromptu speaking and how these elements can impact our message. Moving forward, I aim to practice to not only deliver my message (information), but in a way so that it showcases how it works, so I can truly embody the skills we discussed.

Unit 4:Exploring Impact Navigating Passions Through Research and Persuasion

Chinese

This is a PPT about how to help teenagers maintain physical and mental health

  • Meditating
  • Eating Healthy foods
  • Exercising

I chose to include this because I think it showed my progress in Chinese, mainly because I didn’t understand the vocabulary at first but later on, as we learned more about the topic and did the PPT, I understood the meaning of the words and how to use them.

This showed my progress in Chinese. I found this very difficult; therefore, my teacher had to help me through the process. However, after completing one, I tried to understand the characters and meanings of the book so I could complete it independently.

EnCore: Design Technologies

  1. Empathize

I chose to include this table because it demonstrates my understanding of the Memphis tissue box by analyzing its key features, such as aesthetics and materials. It shows my objectives to evaluate consumer appeal, understand market differences, and prioritize sustainability in design. The comparative approach highlights the balance between visual appeal and functionality, reflecting current consumer trends. Additionally, it addresses the ethical implications of material choices, aligning with the growing demand for responsible products. Overall, this analysis showcases my intent to inform decisions in product development and marketing strategies effectively.

2. Define

I chose to include this design because it showcases my creative exploration of spatial and structural elements within the Memphis design style. The various perspectives highlight my understanding of dimensionality and form, illustrating how I envision the interaction of space in a unique way. By incorporating different shapes and patterns, I aim to capture the playful essence of Memphis aesthetics while ensuring functionality. This approach reflects my objectives of merging creativity with practical design considerations. Overall, this design represents my commitment to pushing boundaries and innovating within the realm of contemporary design.

EnCore: Art

On the left side is the reflection on the pottery work on the right. We tried to incorporate a bowl are coils. Then on top, we embedded it with circles and more coils. At the top, we made diagrams that looked like trees without leaves to depict the winter. I included this because, as I did the clay project, I learned a lot of techniques for making this pottery (molding, sculpting, rolling, etc.). I also learned to some extent the history of pottery.

Impact of Art Exhibitions

This was a reflection on takeaways from the IB Visual arts exhibition. I included this because it illustrates how I improved my critical thinking skills through analyzing and reflecting on the impact of art exhibitions. By considering the relationship between artwork and its presentation, I gained a deeper understanding of audience engagement. This reflection showcases my growth in interpreting complex ideas and evaluating their significance in an artistic context.

Welcome to Your New Portfolio!

Why have a digital portfolio at SAS?

Creating a portfolio, or blog is a great way to collect all the work you’ve done throughout your academic career. You can include academic, athletic, and personal artifacts or experiences that you want to share with a wider audience. This is a great way to organize all your learning in one place and you can take it with you when you leave SAS.  When you make your portfolio, you create posts that are categorized according to your subject. Some categories have already been set up for you, but if you need more categories you can add them as needed. It’s important that your posts have the following:
  • An engaging title – this should not include the name of the subject since this is referenced in the category. Think of this as the first opportunity to engage and hook your reader!
  • Body – this is where you share your learning. This should include a combination of text and media in the form of images, graphics, and embedded videos. You should always consider how your post looks to your audience. Is it engaging and organized? Do they want to keep reading?
  • Category – select one that has been set for you or add a new category. Posts can have more than one category e.g. Humanities and Myself as a Learner
  • Tags – create tags that can be used as keywords to describe your post. Tags help organize your post a little more! Aim to have 3-5 tags for each post. For example, if you are posting about a novel you wrote, you might want the following tags: #Fiction, #MurderMystery, #Theme, #PlotDiagram
