Designing a Story Problem (Piecewise Function Project)

In our piecewise function project I worked with my partner Steven to make a story problem that can be found in someones daily life. Our story was about us starting a zoo and this connects to a real life situation as in our story we are measuring the amount of visitors that come to our zoo each week.

I am most proud of our explanation of our graph because I think we explained each part of the graph well and how they connect to the story problem.

The hardest thing in my opinion was making the story itself. This includes what happens each week and the cause & effect of each week.

I would revise some of the explanation of the graph as I think we could have described it better.

This project helped me understand the different parts of a piecewise function such as the interval of decrease and increase.

Mixed Media Self-Portrait Reflection

When creating my mixed media self-portrait the message that I wanted to send to the audience was that I have nationality of Korea and that I love eating Korean food, especially spicy foods. I also wanted to share to the audience that I am usually a joyful person and a person that likes to help others if needed. I communicated my message through symbols and adding them to my self-portrait. I added a white tiger which symbolizes resilience but is also a national animal for south Korea. I added some traditional spicy food from Korea which I love to eat. Additionally I drew a open mouth and placed the peppers in a certain place to make a visual of me eating peppers. I made my self-portrait yellow since it is a color that symbolize joy and happiness. Lastly I added a hand sort of reaching out to communicate my message of helping other people.

During the creation of my mixed media self-portrait, I didn’t really know where or how to put my peppers across the canvas. At first I thought of it as making it into a background where there are peppers flying everywhere but after some testing I felt like it would look better if the peppers were to work with other elements. And thats why I added a mouth and some air flow lines to make it seem like I am eating the peppers on the canvas.

DT Robotics Reflection

In this unit we did three different challenges using our Vex IQ robots. The first challenge was the sumo challenge where we had to make our robot stay on the battle arena and be the last one standing. The second challenge was the speed challenge where we had to go around the classroom as fast as possible and go across and back as fast as possible (we used gear ratios to make our robot faster than others. The last challenge was the box stacking game where we had to work with other teams robot to stack and put as many boxes as we can on top of this platform.

DT Box Reflection

In this unit we were required to make a tissue box with the given art style which for me was the art deco style. We went through this process where we first made a prototype foam tissue box to see if our blue print tissue box pieces fit together without any flaw. After that we researched already existing tissue boxes to use some of their idea to come up with our final design. Then we started to create our final tissue box using ply wood and spray paint.

Soccer Reflection

In this unit we learned how to make space in our game to move forward with the ball. we also learned dribbling smoothly with our feet so we can go past defenders. But sometimes my team wasn’t very active so passing the ball was difficult, on the other hand some team that I had were very active and participated in the game trying to score goals.

Swimming reflection

In this unit we learned basic swimming such as breath-stroke, freestyle, back-stroke. But we also learned how to do these basic swimming with our head up since it was needed when playing water polo. Our main game that we learned and played was water polo.

ELA Narrative Writing Socratic Seminar

I picked this artifact of my time spoken info for my reflection because I thought this data showed how many times I joined the conversation to get our socratic seminar going. This shows me that I talked about average amount of times and the average amount of minutes people spoken was 1.5min=1min 30 second which I was really close to. It shows me that I don’t have too much trouble joining in conversations as a communicator.

Kool Koor Workshop and Reflection

1. Cultural Influence on Aesthetic Choices:

I think Kool Koor’s background of Bronx led him to using a certain style and techniques on his art works. This includes having him to draw fast since in Bronx if people got caught doing graffiti in the streets they would get charges. Also when Kool Koor was in bronx he had these certain type of spray paints that he used (same brand most of the times). When he was in Bronx he mostly used to spray paint on top of other already finished graffiti works, this led to him using one color to make a thick guideline (mostly black) so that after he does it, he can cover it up and spray things that he wants to draw. Whenever Kool Koor went out to do graffiti works he always wrote something such as his name with quick spray paint since he thought a wall that is unauthorized is vandalism.

2. Environmental Impact on Art Creation:

Because Kool Koor use to move around different places and spent times in different cities, it gave him different styles of art. When he moved to studio work from the streets, he probably brought his street art style with him. But something that he got from studio art was time since he didn’t have to finish his art works in hours because there is no one to catch him and stop him from doing his work. I think I felt his art style when finding our DNA since in most of his works we can see similar shapes that represent him (which is his DNA).

3. Personal Reflection on Aesthetic Development:

I can use different symbols that represent me such as the white tiger because I come from Korea and our national animal is a white tiger. I would also have a lotus for calmness which come from my personality, a pepper or something that represents spicy things because in Korea I used to eat many spicy food and I like eating them, and I can use lego blocks in my self-portrait since from a young age I did lots of lego. I can use all these elements in my portrait from putting them on my background before I draw my actual self-portrait.

Unit 1 Reflection and Goal Setting

Select two questions from the Unit 1 Celebration of Learning that reflect your best thinking in this unit:

1.    I chose question number 7 as evidence of my best thinking because I was able to find the three evidence and state my reasoning of why the two shapes were congruent.

2.    I chose question number 3 as evidence of my best thinking because I was able to describe the different sequence of transformation to map one shape onto another one.

Complete each of these sentences.

3.    Throughout this unit, I improved the most at finding congruent angles using different angle names.

4.    I feel that I still need to work on being aware of writing my angles more precisely, for example angle E no, angle CED yes.

5.    List three of your strengths so far this year:

  • being able to do many different transformation
  • being able to write a math CER on congruent shapes (triangle)
  • explaining my reasoning on why I think about something

6.    List three things you want to improve on in the next unit.

  • Writing my angles more precisely
  • Being able to find congruent shapes in a harder and more difficult shape and question
  • explaining why I think about something more clearly

 7.    Create an academic goal by completing the sentences and answering the questions.

In the next unit, I want to be able to do harder and more difficult questions than usual.

What might get in the way of this goal?

If I don’t understand the math concept of the unit.

What can I do if I get stuck or need help?

ELA Unit 1: First Contact

In this unit, first contact, we learned about different parts of speech, sentence structures, shades of meaning and more. After that we went to this site called flint. ai where we got an AI alien that knows nothing about english. We were required to teach this alien with the things I learned to know the purpose of the alien and how they ended up on Earth. After we taught our alien, we told them to write a one whole paragraph with the things we taught them. Then, we analyzed the alien’s paragraph to find the parts of speech, sentence structures, shades of meaning that they used in the text. We also fixed grammars that were incorrect and reflected on how they did.

In this unit I was able to learn about the different structures of sentences such as complex, compound, simple, complex-compound sentences. I also learned something new which was denotations and connotations. Denotations are words that are just their literal meaning such as spaceship which means space craft. Connotation are words that adds feelings, such as advanced spaceship, the word advanced adds a feeling of modern, high-tech, and complex onto the word spaceship.

This is my alien’s paragraph:
