Health Unit 2 (Mental Health)

In this unit we learned about the different mental health disorders that exists and also their symptoms. We also learned about how they can affect people’s daily life, about how we should reduce the stigma arounds these mental health disorders as it may be more serious in the inside where others can’t see. Furthermore, we learned about the impact of social media on mental health conditions and had a discussion on whether social media should be banned for teens under 16 or not.

Before having this unit I used to think that mental health disorders were things that had to do with only emotions and anxiety. Also since there are stigma around these mental health problems with social media and movies I had misconception on some of these mental health disorders. The misconception I had was that I thought people with mental disorder are people that are violent and can’t control themselves and saw it in a negative way.

After having this unit I now think about mental health differently. I learned that mental health disorders are more than just emotions and anxiety. I learned that people with mental health disorder could be going through a lot such as hallucination, anxiety, perfection, stress, negative thoughts, depression, and way more. Now that I know more about mental health conditions my thought changed from a negative way into a way which makes me think that others should help people with different mental health conditions rather than seeing them negatively or taking it as a joke. Furthermore, people should share awareness and share the different mental health conditions to people who don’t know so that people can reduce the stigma we have on different mental health conditions

Social Studies Reflection for Unit 4

UNIT 4: MIGRATION

REFLECTION

Reflection Area Prompt Your Response (4-8 sentences)
Active Learner Habits How did I show effective use of time (in class and at home) during the development of the final product? Where could I improve? I effectively used my time in class and at home. In class, I used my time efficiently trying to finish my overall script, finding images for my video, and finding a platform to create my product on. At home, I used my time for editing, putting all the collected sources together to finish my video. But still, I think I could have done more work in class with some of the editing and recording since it took quite a long time at home.
Challenges & Persistence What was the hardest part of the process of developing the product?  How did I work through it? The hardest part for me was editing and writing the script but the thing that surprisingly took a long time was recording my speech. For writing my script, I took some information from my interview outline to get the bases and the chapters organized, then I took some of the information from my interview analysis paragraphs to make my script. Editing was quite difficult since I had some trouble with capcut but the things I didn’t know how to use, I searched up in youtube to learn how to do them. For my recording, I split some of the paragraphs up into smaller parts so that I have less space to make mistakes.
Use of Flint AI How did I use Flint AI?  (e.g. develop my interview questions, brainstorming, organizing, final product)?   I really only used Flint AI to help me generate some questions, but that is all. Flint AI was very helpful with generating ideas for my questions such as the topic, general idea, and more. And when I got stuck with making more questions, it helped me come up with new ones.
Final Product In what ways did my final product effectively communicate my thinking?  What would I change or improve if I had more time? I think my migration video effectively communicated like the why parts of my migration analysis. This includes communicating why my dad had a certain perspective, why the push and pull factors were effective for my dad’s decision to move, and why the physical and human characteristics mattered to him and how it could have impacted his choice of migration. Something that I would have changed and improved if I had more time are some parts of the speech and the images. I feel like I could have added more important information in my script and I think I could have had some videos or short clips of Korea and China at the time of my dad’s migration in the documentary video.

Science Semester 1 Reflection

Evidence of Organization:
Science notebook artifact: table of contexts, the before is page 12 and 13, the after is the unit 2 paper works being organized in order into the notebook page 29.
Claim: My science notebook became more useful as the school year continued, as I took more care to add details and clarity to my work.

Evidence of Active Learner Habits:

Improved Learning skills:
1) My CER writing skills have improved a lot from the start of the year especially the reasoning part.
2) My creating Model skills improved a lot through my meteor model project.
3) My critical thinking skills improved with the discussion board

Area for Growth:
1) Some of my 3 for 3s I can go ask Ms. Neal to clarify some question if I get under 2/3

Evidence of Understanding of Key Concepts
My 3 for 3 scores-

I mostly get full marks on my 3 for 3 but there was two times that I got a score less than 2 on a 3 for 3, which shows that I am mostly ready for 3 for 3 quiz but sometimes that may not be the case.

Evidence of Growth in Science Skills

My ability to obtain, evaluate, then communicate has improved from the start.

PE Pickleball

In this unit we played pickle ball and we learned the basic rules such as double bounce rule and the kitchen rule. We learned how to serve and relay sort of thing. Afterwards we played the actual game which is two player on one team. the double bounce rule was that after the someone serve the ball each team has to let it bounce once for 2 turns then can play without any bounce. And the kitchen rule was you can’t go into the front small rectangle space to play unless if the ball bounces.

Health: WOOP Goal

To achieve my wish in my WOOP goal I chose the Habit Tracker and I wish it can help me be able to read at least 45 minutes a day.

My current baseline wellness metrics for my wish which is to read 45 minutes a day is basically zero/none since I haven’t been reading any book in my house when I have free time.

Specific credible source that explains why reading is a good self-care practice to build stress resilience.

The image above is from National Geographic where they tell us that reading puts us in a state where we enter focus mode yet contemplative mental state, helping us reduce stress.

Self-Care Practice:

  • A tracker which I turn on for 30min and while that timer is going I read until it rings
  • I used the timer feature and the streak checker of how many days I succeeded doing my goal in a row the most
  • The feature I used the least was the data graph feature where it shows you your overall rate, best streak, perfect days, habits done, and daily average because timers I always use when starting my reading sessions and the others doesn’t really matter
  • I think technology can be both positive and negative towards our wellbeing. For example if we are playing video games or scrolling all night it is really bad for our wellbeing, but on the other hand if we are using it for purposes such as goal setting and helping achieve our goal it can totally be positive towards our wellbeing

Self-Care Progress:

  • Compared to my baseline data I am doing way better now. Except for one day I have read 30 or more minutes of books each day before I sleep
  • Successes I faced was being able to read 30 minutes each day
  • Some Challenges I faced were daily schedule such as having a competition and changing my usual night routine which was tech then bed

Future Self-Care Plan: Getting regular exercise even walking for at least 30min

Short-Term:
1-2 tools/strategies to regulate my emotions:
“Name it to Tame it”: Identifying and labeling intense emotions as they happen
“Box Breathing or any Relaxing Breathing”: A breathing exercise to make you relax

My hope: I hope these tools can help me regulate my emotions better, enhance my stress resilience, and help me achieve my future and present goals.

Skill help with my goal: These skills can help me enhance my stress resilience and also these skills would help me achieve my goal since these tools help relax while I read or do exercises. Most importantly it would help regulate my emotions better.

Long-Term: To build my resilience habit in the future I will continue to read more books, exercise more, sleep more, and use these emotion regulating strategies more often. These habits will be important to have as it would help me become more resilience to stress and other emotions. This can be also said from Nat geography from Part 1.

Integrated Mathematics 8 Semester 1

  1. Active Learner Habits

My Strengths

One strength I bring to math class is determination. Another strength I bring is persistency. A third strength I bring is being focused when doing classwork.

Area of Growth

One habit I want to improve this semester is thinking more critically and thinking deeper into the questions. This is an area of growth for me because in some of the L4 questions or just critical thinking questions I get stuck sometimes.

Plan for Growth

I will work on this habit by trying out more critical thinking questions and developing my deeper thinking skills to solve harder questions.

Math Notation and Communication

2. Understanding Key Concepts

Reflection:

My math work improved since now I am taking notes with less words but more image to show and explain my learning and concept better. This includes the model on the left side (past) work being less detailed and the model on the right side (Now) work being more detailed.

Example sentence starters:

Over time, my math notebook shows the increase in the amount I take notes and the quality which includes more model that is more detailed with better labels.

3. Evidence of Understanding of Key Concepts

Sticker Project:

Design your own Story Project:

Reflection (for each example):

The sticker project shows that I understand the different kinds of transformations in Math. One strength in this work is showing the general mapping rule for all of the different transformations and how and why they work. This work shows growth because before I started this unit I knew some of the transformation and their rule such as transition and rotation but I didn’t know the general rule for reflection and more and why they worked as they are. But after this unit I am able to explain why they work and what the general mapping rule is for different transformations.

The story design project shows that I understand the different parts of a graph which includes domain, range, minimum, maximum, x-intercept, y-intercept, and slopes (zero, positive, negative). One strength in this work me being able to show how to solve different slopes (zero, positive, negative) using different methods such as slope intercept form and point slope form. This work shows growth because before this unit I didn’t know every part of a graph and how to solve them.

Final Reflection:

Overall, my work shows that I can use different math concepts to solve different math problems.

PE Badminton Unit Reflection

In this unit we learned to do different things in badminton. For example, we learned drop shots (far and short), serving (backhand and forehand), and we also learned how to clear the shuttle. In this unit we played both 1s and 2s based on out choice. We also learned the proper stance and variety of ways to hit the shuttle to specific positions that help us win the game. For me I improved the most with drop shots and clear shots which was huge but I feel like I could get more creative with my serves.

Designing a Story Problem (Piecewise Function Project)

In our piecewise function project I worked with my partner Steven to make a story problem that can be found in someones daily life. Our story was about us starting a zoo and this connects to a real life situation as in our story we are measuring the amount of visitors that come to our zoo each week.

I am most proud of our explanation of our graph because I think we explained each part of the graph well and how they connect to the story problem.

The hardest thing in my opinion was making the story itself. This includes what happens each week and the cause & effect of each week.

I would revise some of the explanation of the graph as I think we could have described it better.

This project helped me understand the different parts of a piecewise function such as the interval of decrease and increase.

Mixed Media Self-Portrait Reflection

When creating my mixed media self-portrait the message that I wanted to send to the audience was that I have nationality of Korea and that I love eating Korean food, especially spicy foods. I also wanted to share to the audience that I am usually a joyful person and a person that likes to help others if needed. I communicated my message through symbols and adding them to my self-portrait. I added a white tiger which symbolizes resilience but is also a national animal for south Korea. I added some traditional spicy food from Korea which I love to eat. Additionally I drew a open mouth and placed the peppers in a certain place to make a visual of me eating peppers. I made my self-portrait yellow since it is a color that symbolize joy and happiness. Lastly I added a hand sort of reaching out to communicate my message of helping other people.

During the creation of my mixed media self-portrait, I didn’t really know where or how to put my peppers across the canvas. At first I thought of it as making it into a background where there are peppers flying everywhere but after some testing I felt like it would look better if the peppers were to work with other elements. And thats why I added a mouth and some air flow lines to make it seem like I am eating the peppers on the canvas.

DT Robotics Reflection

In this unit we did three different challenges using our Vex IQ robots. The first challenge was the sumo challenge where we had to make our robot stay on the battle arena and be the last one standing. The second challenge was the speed challenge where we had to go around the classroom as fast as possible and go across and back as fast as possible (we used gear ratios to make our robot faster than others. The last challenge was the box stacking game where we had to work with other teams robot to stack and put as many boxes as we can on top of this platform.
