Unit 2 Reflection & Semester Check-In

Part 1: Unit 2 Topic A and B Test Reflection (Functions & Statistics)

I chose Question 3 as evidence of my best thinking because I accurately described the association of a scatter plot in context.

I also chose Question 6 as evidence of my best thinking because I used evidence from many sources to explain why a linear model was appropriate for a data set.

Throughout Unit 2, I improved the most at describing set of data and answering questions statistically.

One skill from this unit that I still need to work on is interpreting the correlation coefficient of data.

The biggest challenge for me on this assessment was the above.

One strategy that helped me on the test was remembering to add the word “predicted” when working with statistics.

Part 2: Goal Reflection & End-of-Semester Check-In

My goal was to improve my active learner by turning in my assignments on time.

I have done okay on this, as I have missed assignments a few times but more not than so.

Using a reminders app has greatly helped in helping me achieve this goal.

My procrastination was the main block in achieving this goal.

The strengths I have shown last semester:
Starting to use a reminders app
being aware of assignments I have missed

Areas I need to improve on:
Doing assignments after they are due (if I haven’t done them)
Keeping track of assignments

In the next unit I aim to submit all assignments on time.

Again, my procrastination and lack of organization may get in the way.

I will keep to my reminders app and look at it whenever I feel like I’m done with my assignments.

Designing a Story Problem

Johnny and I made a story problem modeling gradually increasing discounts.
This is our story: Ljubljana City Schools are buying calculators in bulk for their students. If Ljubljana buys 1-50 calculators, there is no discount. The discount increases additively by 2% for every 50 calculators bought, capping at 30%.

The part of our project that I am most proud of is making the graph. There are 16 different-sloped intervals in our graph and we had to restart due to there being price gaps between different levels of discount.

The hardest part of creating our piecewise function was figuring out if it was bad we didn’t have any zero-sloped or negative-sloped portions.

In my document, I would definitely explain the answers I had to the questions better, and make a more diverse piecewise function with various slopes.

This project taught me that piecewise functions don’t have to be all over the place and can still look like a useful graph.

Healthy Relationships Unit Reflection

In this unit, we were taught how to identify and differentiate healthy and unhealthy relationships. The purpose of this project was to apply our knowledge to fictional characters and show our findings. Our conclusion is that the relationship between Jim and Pam in The Office is healthy.

The main things i learned this unit:

  1. always being your with your partner and spending no time apart is unhealthy
  2. the people in the relationship should enjoy time outside being together to keep the relationship healthy
  3. respecting others boundaries and giving and asking for consent effectively is key to keeping a healthy relationship

Unit 2 (Health) Reflection on Learning

I feel like I’ve been caring about my own mental health more due to getting less sleep and feeling a bit tired every morning. The main idea I learned this unit is that mental health disorders are much harder to go through than I originally thought.
For example,
I found out people with OCD involuntarily take a very long time completing their compulsions and that it’s very mentally and physically tiring.
People with anxiety are very susceptible to not being able to sleep as they commonly activating their sympathetic nervous system.
Eating disorders are caused by a very warped perception of oneself and leads to the highest death rate of any psychiatric illness.
While PTSD is active, there is basically a inability to complete any normal task, as you constantly find linksto the traumatic event that aren’t there and act like so.
Addiction is mainly caused by social pressure and culture, and your body can feel strange or even hurtful if the addicting substance is not taken. Withdrawals can cause the person to go back to their addiction. Most of these addictions are with potentially harmful or harmful substances such as alcohol or drugs.

When researching my group’s disorder, PTSD, I learned that victims of assault, especially women, get PTSD more often than military veterans, but they get basically no time in the spotlight.

There’s an App for that L4

Hypothesis: The Session app will allow me to complete all my assignments on time and in high quality.

Caption: WOOP Goal

Measurable Outcomes:
At least 7 hours of sleep every day
No late homework assignments
Consistently doing homework before

Features of Session:

Pomodoro Timer:
A Pomodoro Timer is a special timer used to limit procrastination and maximize productivity. It is seperated into 25 minute work times and 5 minute breaks. After a few cycles, there is a longer break, typically lasting 30 minutes.

Before you start a Session, the app tells you to take 3 deep breaths.

After you complete a Session, the app records it in your calendar.

The main feature I used is the Pomodoro timer. When I start assignments, I start the timer. One key limitation is that the free version completely lacks any blocking features. There is no incentive to keep on-task without paying $5/month. The calendar was useless as I had my own organization strategies, and I don’t have a schedule for when I do my homework.

The main advertising point in the App Store is staying focused.

As I already said, the blocking is paywalled. Also, I don’t have any issues with notifications. The background noise is actually quite distracting, being a ticking clock.

One thing that is a helpful listed feature is when the app reminds you when your session goes too long. This is mainly just quality of life, as I often forget to finish my sessions.

Evidence:

(Yes these are all on different days)

For the last 4 weeks, my average screen time has been steadily decreasing. But, because of the break and all, this is most likely not caused from using this app, though I don’t have enough evidence to prove that it is not.

Also, I have turned in only one assignment late during these last few weeks, and unfortunately that is this portfolio post.

Lastly, I have consistently been sleeping from 11 to 7, and on weekends, sometimes to 9. I am also not sure if this is caused by using this app, but this is an improvement compared to August, where i was sleeping from 12 or even 1 am to 7.

As I mentioned earlier, there is no incentive to NOT go off track when using this app, and I did not exactly notice less distractions. But, in the last few weeks, I have been starting to use other ways to focus, such as listening to music. My hypothesis is already false from this assignment, but I guess this project as a whole gave me new ways to focus.

Design:

The way this app reminds you to make sessions is a daily reminder. I have it set at 10 am, but I usually am not on my computer at that time. You can set multiple reminder times though, I just haven’t used more. If I bought premium, I could definitely build some healthy habits, and I can definitely see potential. The app and website blocking is key to making me focus.

LA Grammar Unit

Caption: Alien Paragraph

While teaching my alien English, I learned a lot about different parts of speech; mainly, articles and interjections.

For our interviews, we had to annotate our paragraphs in 3 ways: Parts of speech, types of sentences, and tones of emotion.

Types of sentences was the hardest, as my alien only generated compound sentences and some simple sentences. The only complex sentence I saw was “I am Talu from Kiva-9.”

Tones of emotion was also quite hard, as I didn’t know much about connotation and denotation, and Mr Stanley pushed me quite hard there in the interview.

I also forgot the term for conjuntions in the middle of two phrases, which was split conjuntions.

WOOP Hypothesis

The Session app will help me minimize procrastination by allowing me to schedule my work and help me utilize a Pomodoro timer. The Pomodoro timer is a time management tool used for focused time and short breaks.

I hope to see these in the next week:
1. No overdue assignments

2. Do all my assignments before 9:00 pm

3. Keep my time on video games under 2 hours/day (excluding weekends)

The main metrics associated with this are tech use and sleep hours.

Stress Unit Reflection

After this unit, I am more aware of my emotions and when my amygdala is triggered. For example, when a project is almost due, I can feel the change in my body.

I was most surprised when learning about the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous system because I didn’t know our brain had different modes for different levels of stress.

The scenario is very relatable because I always feel very stressed before my swim heat. I’ve experienced both sides: in 100 free I am very unconfident and get a slower time than in practice. In 50 breast I am very confident and always get a personal best.

Understanding the teen brain could help teens communicate with adults as if the teen becomes agitated they could use what they learned to calm down.

My favorite stress management techniques are talking and creative outlets. They are usually scattered in between my homework among other things.

Our project did not include sources, which isn’t the best. Also, just 2 days before we presented, our peer feedback was abysmal. Fortunately, we managed to complete a significant portion of the project before the presentation.
