Math Unit 2 Piecewise Function Project Reflection

In our Unit 2 Math project, we were asked to create a real life project that included functions and then solve it with graphs. The following document is my final project.

Our project described the French re-re-re-re-re-re-re-revolution in 6769 where headless people connected to their head via bluetooth is the new fashion. Our question is to use the graph to model the change of the new number of headless people each year.

I am most proud of our work in the part of which we were asked to identify the intervals of increase, decrease, and constants. I am very proud of it because not only did we included specific equations with variables, but we also showed all functions in the right format, which took a long time and effort.

It was very hard to design a solvable questions and create a graph that models it. It was very hard and we had to redo our graph several times in my notebook. But we eventually overcame it by revising our problem from asking about 1 year to over a course of years.

I would improve our last part of explaining the functions in our story’s context, if we had more time, we would include more details into our responds so that someone who did not read our background story can also easily understand our model.

This project helped me a lot at understanding the piecewise function as it provided a chance for me to actively engage in learning and design the problem ourselves. It helps us deepen our understanding of how the functions connect to the real world.

Art Mixed Media Self-Portrait Reflection

For this unit, we were using a special technique to create a poster effect for a selfie that we chose for our portrait. We used Procreate to make our image into different shades of the same colors, creating a posterized image. We then printed out the image and incorporated other elements with it into our canvas that we spray painted earlier. We used a lot of different materials to make collages and mixed media elements that represents ourselves and our identities.

The following picture is my portrait.

I wan the audience to understand a bit about me when they see this portrait. They can see that I prefer a dark and cloudy environment, as shown by my black background and the silver train of rain. In addition, my main portrait of my self is made in dark blue, also showing that I like darker areas. They may know that I am pessimistic as there is a sad eye crying on the left side of my portrait. I also love jellyfish, which they can get by looking at my jellyfish symbol under the portrait. I deeply believe in ghosts and supernatural forces, so I added a ghost as my main element. The colorful cut out people on top shows that I value my families and friends. Although the main background is black and white, there are many pops of colors that shows how I can be very energetic from time to time.

The following images are my planning drawings and process.

I took several risks throughout my process. For example, most students do not want puddles of spray paint on their canvas for it is hard to dry. But I took a risk and sprayed a lot of paint to create the rain drop effect, which turned out very nice. I also experience with pops of colors on black and white, which also turned out interesting. And it effectively showed my personality of quick switch between pessimistic and energetic.

DT Robotics Unit Reflection

The above file is our process journal. For this unit, we built a Vex IQ bot that competed in 3 different challenges – wall racing, speed challenge, and stacking challenge. I focused on building the bot and both of our teammates worked on the process journal. Our team performed very well in the speed challenge, driven by Frans, my teammate, as I was absent the day of the test. We broke the record of the speed challenge with 16.02 sec. However, we didn’t perform very well in the stacking challenge, as my driving skills were not very good.

PE Swimming Unit Reflection

For this swimming unit, we focused on our aquatic skills and also water polo.

I improved my freestyle stroke and my ability to swim with my head up and keeping a ball. I was good at passing the ball and talking to my teammates in water polo. I was able to score and also play defense. I struggled with the eggbeater kick because it made my legs very tired, since my daily exercise is climbing up the middle school stairs. Although I missed a few goals, me and my teammate Kristin dominated the offense because Aqua-spider man was too short to guard either of us. I am proud that I never gave up during the games even when our opponents were in the lead. I am also proud that I finally learned to breathe on both sides. My overall swimming stamina got much better. I also became more aware of the game and my surroundings in the water.

Art Kool Koor Workshop Reflection

For our semester 1 mini unit on graffiti and identity, we had a visit artist, Kool Koor, to our school and host a workshop. During the workshop he guided us through the basic artistic creation progress from automatic writing to creating bold brushstrokes on a big canvas. This picture is the final product my teammates and I created.

Throughout the process, Kool Koor led us explore our identity and encouraged us to incorperate the symbols that appeared in our automatic writing into our paintings. We chose 2 colors that we liked to paint thick strokes, one on top of the other, just like graffiti art that usually gets covered up by new paintings. The quick, big strokes without much thinking also relate to the graffiti art style as it was sometimes illegal and artists had to paint quick to avoid getting caught.

During our artist investigation, we looked into how Kool Koor’s culture and early experience with graffiti art had impacted his current art style. In my opinion, his background of graffiti style shaped his artistic color choices to be colors that are very bright and stands out when one sees it, often using bold painting techniques like the big brushes that he introduced us to, for most times he painted quickly to avoid being caught by the police. He also incorporate the same symbol of leaves like shapes to express his own identity, just like the core belief of graffiti to be rebellion and explore self-identity.

The environment change in Kool Koor’s working space also greatly impacted his art. When he was a graffiti writer in the streets, his art were just big bold text style that stands out without much details due to time limit. However, as he shifted towards studio work, one can see that his art became much more detailed with the use of markers with paint instead of use one media.

As you can see in the painting above, there are big, bold brush strokes as well as details in gold marker of his symbol. He also used more detailed colors that includes background painting for when he was a writer, the street and building’s original color or art was the background of his art. One can feel the transition when trying out his art style for it require several colors and then small details that most graffiti artists don’t have time for.

I believe that my Chinese culture will impact my future artistic for my mix-media portrait because I am from a very traditional Chinese family that values the culture of China, so I am thinking about incorporating aspects of unique Chinese legends in my artwork like dragons, Mingwang and NeiZha (not the one in the movie >:(, also I can use traditional colors like red, black, or blue and green. I can also add elements of Chinese traditional clothings. I add these background items into my artwork to show my identity and the origin of my culture.

Science Unit 1 Reflection

Throughout my science unit 1 learning of meteors, meteorite, comets, and asteroids, I am most proud of my final L3 Meteorite Model. It took a lot of time during our extended learning and I asked for many people’s opinions on my poster and revised it to be better.

I am satisfied with my final grade for I got full marks and my poster met all SAS poster requirements. As shown by my Science Schoology grade.

My biggest challenge in this class is understanding difficult concepts for sometimes I struggle to understand wordings or separate similar situations like in Unit 1, I sometimes mix up the order of geographic time scale of newest to oldest or concepts like the difference between meteor, meteorite, comets, etc.

However, I demonstrated active learning and overcame these issues that I faced by communicating with my teacher and teammates who explained the concepts to me. I always come to class prepared with my science notebook, pencil case, computer and my backpack to ensure that I have everything I need to maximize my learning experience. I further demonstrated my active learner skills by always collaborating with different teammates throughout the unit. For example, my table mate Evan was absent for most of our first quarter, so I was very flexible and worked with many new classmates. I am currently reflecting on my learning process through my portfolio post, and it enable me to look back at my previous unit, review, and also identify the areas of growth that I can focus on for next Unit.

Math Unit 1 Reflection and Goal Setting

I chose the first question for my L4 Unit 1 Celebration of Learning as evidence to show my understanding for I described with words a series of rigid transformations on a graph. I got the question correct, showing that I have understood the skill.

I chose the first question for L4 asking you to identify a series of triangles and their relations as evidence for my best thinking for I clearly and successfully identified with explanation 2 congruent triangles with reasoning. I used many mathematical language such as alt. int. angles and alt. ex. angles.

Throughout this unit, I improved the most with my understanding of dilations and how to describe non-rigid transformation. I feel like I still need to work on indentifyng or proves the general condition under which the transformations produce the same image. My strength are getting my work done on time, reviewing and previewing my lessons when I need to, and identifying different types of transformation. I want to improve on my presenting skills, project skills, and also my ability to show my learning like the sticker project.

In the next unit, I would like to find a efficient way to showcase my learning and understanding for my end of unit project. My procrastination skills might get into the way and I can ask Miss Baldwin during lunch or email her.

ELA Unit 1 Reflection

For Unit 1 in ELA we focused on grammar and parts of speech. We showcased our learning at the end of the unit by doing a stimulator of FBI agents and teaching an alien English grammar and parts of speech in order to figure out the alien’s intentions.

During the unit, we acted like FBI linguistic agents who intended to gather information from the aliens. We all had random and different alien AI, and my alien is named Naru and is a friendly alien that came to Earth to warn humans about the evil ‘Others’ who are trying to take over our planet and enslave human kinds. During the unit I built up trust with my alien and taught it English and grammar.

The following paragraph is the final project that I present to my ‘boss’ which is generated y by alien AI about its intentions and experiences.

As you can see, I am proud of my progress with my alien AI. It had successfully used parts of speech and different types of sentences. I am not very satisfied with my alien’s usage of shades of meaning, which means using different word choice to imply different feelings and possibly share bias. There are places where my alien could have used better choices of words like when it stated ‘…it was like finding a rare Pokemon…’ instead of finding it could have used verbs like tracking down that has a more intense and tiring feeling.

The following poster is the FBI poster for my alien, it has basic information about my alien like its name, origin, purpose coming to Earth, and threat level.
