Blue Light and Sleep

What safety behaviour do you think are most important to you?

I think some safety behavior that are most important to me is how I wear a helmet when I ride a bike, look both ways before crossing the road, and having good sleep habits. These are really important to me since I if I don’t do some of them, it might means that I will be in danger since if I fall off my bike, my head will have protection and if I have good sleep, it can make me have better performance at school and I know what I’m doing since I am more clear about what is happening.

Who are your five trusted people you can go to if you feel something isn’t right either online or in person?

I trusted people I can go to if I feel something is not right is my parents, my uncle, my sister, my grandparents and the counselor from school. I can go to them if I feel that something is not right and they might help me solve the problem, and I am comfortable talking to them.

How does Social Media and Technology impact teens the most in your opinion?

In my opinion, social media and technology impacts on teens most since they have social media and technology and they don’t really know how to use it since they’re new to it and that makes it really dangerous for them to use it. They don’t know what’s there and what’s not there and what’s bad and what’s good so am they are impacted on the most because they don’t know when they’re addicted or when they need to stop.

What strategies can you use to help protect yourself in everyday life – online and in real life – list 3-5 strategies.

Some strategies I can use to protect myself in everyday life is are you so much social media and technology so I don’t get addicted to it. That means that I can be safer since I’m not using so much social media. Also listen in class so I can know more about what is right and what is wrong and how we can get affected and what to do when something is wrong.

What would be the biggest takeaway (learning) you have?

The biggest takeaway from learning is learning about how teams are most affected and that we have to be especially careful about our safety online when something is wrong. We have to talk to trusted adults or trusted people so they can help solve a problem and make sure the problem doesn’t happen again.

Language Arts: Dystopian Fiction

What did I do?

I learned about dystopian fiction characteristics by reading the Giver and writing academic paragraphs responding to the questions about the text. Some examples of dystopian fiction characteristics are constant surveillance, social control, control of nature, etc. We read the book and we learned about the characters in the book and the community about how it connects to dystopian fiction characteristics.

What did I learn?

In this unit, we learned about academic paragraphs and having academic discussions building vocabulary through reading books and understanding them using a AI chat bot to help us build our vocabulary, when we would have vocabulary test, the teacher would give us a topic and we would have to use the vocabulary and write a story about the topic. We also learned about using transition words to write an academic paragraph like “for example”, “unlike”, “however”. This helped with my reading comprehension because I learned to use the story to write paragraphs, and that made me understand more about the characters and the book.

What worked?

something that was how I could read the book and understand about it with assignments and reading comprehension paragraphs. This helped me learn more about the book since I could think more deeply about the book and how the characters connect to the things that happen in the book. Something I’m proud of is how I can have a discussion with my friends about the book and have interaction between our conversations like saying “I agree” or “I didn’t think about that” to make people feel more included to the conversation and discussion.

What didn’t work?

I didn’t work was how sometimes I didn’t really understand what was happening in the book and I couldn’t really do the reading comprehension assignment assignments the teacher gave us. I solve this problem by rereading the chapter chapter or chapters in the book more more times, so then that means that I could understand it more and that helped me finish the reading comprehension assignments, and understand what happened what was happening in the book more.

Personal relevance

This is really important in the future because when I am working, I have to understand what I’m doing or what I’m reading in order to finish and do something so reading comprehension can help me in the future. If I don’t have good reading comprehension, it can cause me to not understand things right and that can cause me to make mistakes in my future work life.

Math Bake Sale

What did we do?

In this project, we made caramel basque cheese cake for a final bake sale. We used rates and percents to figure out the cost, profit, markup percent, etc. At our final bake sale, we sold our products, answered some questions our customers had, and we got to use the profit we made to buy some products our friends made.

What did we learn?

We learned about a lot of things in this unit. We learned how to use the ingredients price to find the batch cost and markup percent. We especially learned about how to use different ways to solve things like scale factor or ratio table. We also learned how to bake a cheesecake in this project, about getting the ingredient amount right, etc.

What worked?

A lot of things worked. When we made the cake, it was a success because the cake looked good and it tastes good. We actually sold out, which is a surprise since when we sliced the cake at the bake sale, we kind of ruined the looks of the cake and it looked ugly, but we still sold out. The math was also went very smoothly. We knew how to do most of the math.

What didn’t work?

Something that didn’t work was our cake’s price. At first, we wanted our cake to have a markup percent of 200% and after we rounded it the markup percent was about 204%. However, afterwards we found out that a lot of people only got 30¥ and our price was 32 for a bigger size cake. That is why we lowered our price so more people can afford it. The bigger cake was 20 a slice and the smaller one was 10 a slice.

Personal Relevance

Selling things can be really important in the future, especially if we need to advertise a product. I learned a lot about how to persuade the costumer to buy our product. When we want to sell something, we need to stand up, that way, we can engage with the costumer. They will feel better about you and that will make them want to buy your product.

Unit II – Ötzi Unit Reflection

What did we do?

In this unit, we worked on a lot of things to investigate Ötzi the iceman. We mainly focused on whether Ötzi was murdered or not. First, we worked on an observation, inferences, and wondering sheet. Then we learned read lots of articles that had different perspective on Ötzi death. We learned how to write a CER, and we used the information we read about to write a CER about if he was murdered or not. Then at the end of the unit, we had a mock trial about whether he was murdered or not, and some people were lawyers, some were expert witnesses, and people from the other team were Jury.

What did I learn?

I learned about why we should care about the past. We should care about the past because the past shaped the present. What our ancestors did is important to what and who we are now. For instance, Ötzi the iceman helped us learn about how life was back in the days when he was alive. What people ate, how they lived, what they used, etc.

What worked well?

Something that I am proud of in this unit is the mock trial that we did. I was a prosecution lawyer, and I made a concluding statement. I think the last statement I made was persuasive, and I think I am proud of myself. In the end, we won, and Jury decided that Ötzi was murdered. I also think my partners and I worked well together, and we made a good case.

What didn’t work?

Something that didn’t work that well was how our team was all kind of nervous, and we didn’t really know what I was doing. For instance, when I asked the questions to the expert witness, I didn’t really know what I was asking about and what questions I already asked, and it was kind of messy. If I got to do it another time, I would ask the questions in order so it would be more organized.

Personal Relevance

These skills of collaboration and communication can be really helpful in life. Especially when in the future when I need to work with others, being able to communicate good with people is really important. Having good communication skills can help me with my life when I am working.

Science Egg Car

What did I do?

We built an Egg car using Newton’s 1st and 3rd law. We had 3 pieces of A4 paper, wheels and axels and about an hour to work on our car. We needed to add things to our car to make sure the egg in the “Passenger Seat” wouldn’t crack when we put it on a ramp.

What did I learn?

I learned about how Newton’s 1st and 3rd law can help us to be safe in our car. For instance, the 1st law states an object in motion will stay in motion, an object in rest will stay at rest unless acted upon by an unbalanced force. When the car stops at the end of the ramp the car would stop but the egg would still want to move forward, so. a seat belt prevents the egg from fly out and cracking. Also, the 3rd law say that every action has and equal and opposite reaction. When the car bumps on the concrete ground, the ground pushes back up onto the car, therefore we built Crumple Zones so the force would be acted on the crumple zone and less onto the egg.

What worked?

Something that worked well was how our car survived the ramp and the egg was safe! The seat belt and the crumple zone worked really well, it helped our egg to be safe. The base was also secure enough for the egg to hold on it.

What didn’t work?

Something I might suggest other groups that had the egg cracked is that they can test their car more. They can try to test instead of keep building their car, when you test, you can find our some key problems. Also, they can make their base stronger so the car can hold the egg’s weight.

Personal Relevance

Now I know about how the cars and trucks are designed so we can be safe. The seat belt is very important to have in a car, so I will be extra alert to tell my family and friends to use their seat belt even when it is only a close distance. I actually didn’t know about the crumple zones until we learned about them at school and I think this is a very smart invention to keep us safe in the car. I always thought there was just airbags and seat belt but I never knew there were crumple zones to protect us too.

Design Technology Reflection

In this trimester, we learned about three units. The first unit we leaned was about Graphic Design. We started with Inkscape tutorials and leaned how to use Inkscape to draw a product for a client. I gave my mom a pair of earrings shaped like a moon. We needed to ask our client what they wanted and we needed to make the product in the client’s standards. In the second unit, we learned about 3D printing. We started with TinkerCAD tutorials, learning about how to use basic tools like aligning, changing movements, etc. After that, we got into groups and found a theme we were interested in and made a chess piece of our own on TinkerCAD with all the skills we’ve learned before. In our third unit, we learned about Robotics starting with building the Lego Spike bot and coded the bot to do things like turning away or pushing something.

Science Balloon Car

What did I do?

The balloon car was built using a balloon, a foam plate, straws, hot glue, and some tape. We used 45 minutes to make the balloon car. We used it to learn about Newton’s 3rd law which is every action has an opposite and equal reaction. The air is coming out of the balloon and the balloon car move forward.

What did I learn?

Newton’s 1st law say, an object in rest tends to stay at rest, an object in motion tends to stay in motion unless acted upon by an unbalanced force. We see this law in action with the balloon car when a balloon car is at rest its stays at rest unless the balloon air is blowing out and that is the unbalanced force. Newton’s 2nd law says the greater the mass of an object, the more force need to move it. We see this law in action with the balloon car when we added mass onto the car in an investigation and the car didn’t move as far. Newton’s 3rd law says, every action has an opposite and equal reaction. We see this law in action with the balloon car when the air comes out of the balloon, the car moves forward.

What worked?

This investigation worked well because my partner and I were really good at collaborating together. We figured out lots of things like how Newton’s laws applies to the car about how when we put more weight onto the car it didn’t go as far. We were really good at collaborating together in the investigation.

What did not work?

It was a struggle when the car my partner and I made didn’t really get the car to move. To solve this problem my partner and I tried lots of things like putting more air in the balloon so it could go farther or align the wheels. At last, we found out that when the wheels are not aligned, the car would only move for a little and then it just stops.

Personal Relevance

I see Newton’s 1st law in real life in my house. When plates are on the table, it stay there unless I move it with an unbalanced force. Also, when I am in the car, and the car turns left, I move right. This is an example of Newton’s 3rd law because the action is turning and the opposite reaction is my tilting to the other side. The Balloon Car was like a real car in the real world, when there are more people (weights/washers) the car wouldn’t be able to move as fast (Newton’s 2nd law).

Language Arts: Creative Writing Reflection

What are we doing?

We are writing a fictional story based on a theme that matters to me.

What are we learning?

We learned about the theme which is my purpose for writing this story, my message to readers. We also learned about character development by creating believable characters with positive & negative traits, strengths and flaws. Next, we learned about the plot which is the sequence of events in my story; Western and Eastern approaches to storytelling. Last, we learned about the setting which is the world that I create for my story and where my story will happen.

What was working?

I enjoyed making the characters because all the characters have their flaws and strengths and they all have interesting quirks and how I can embed the character trait in my story. I am proud of how I got to do show not tell by showing how my characters were mad or sad by showing their actions, not just saying that they were sad or mad. I got the idea because in the movie we were watching during advisory, Wonder, how the character Auggie was betrayed by a very good friend Jack. My favorite part was the ending and how I ended on a cliffhanger.

Area’s of Growth

It was challenging when I got to the conflict because I didn’t know how to describe the feeling of surprise the the main character Abby had when she heard that her best friend Shelly was betraying her. I put myself into Abby’s shoes and got the feeling about how I would describe Abby’s feelings. My least favorite part o f the story is the part where Abby gets betrayed by Shelly. It bothers me because I wouldn’t really like it if it was me and it’s just cruel.

Personal Relevance

I think that even if you are not becoming an author, creative writing helps make you have better imagination and you can look at things differently. This can help you in the future because imagination is very important. I do enjoy creative writing because I can be creative and put all my ideas on the paper.

Unit 1 – Campaign for the Olympics Reflection.

What did we do?

During this unit, we did campaign for the Olympics, we mainly focused on why the IOC should choose a city to host the Olympics. I worked with a partner, and we had 4 reasons why we chose that place, in our case, we chose Vancouver. We made an Olympic Logo with Flint AI and made it generate photos according to the characteristics we asked Flint for before. Last, we made a presentation that has images to present to the IOC.

What did I learn?

Global sporting events exist because they help bring countries together in peace and they can compete with sports together. They also help honor culture because different people from different countries come together. Different countries can come together in a friendly way and make friends with each other too. That can help with the friendship between different countries too.

What worked?

Something that was working was how my partner and I split the slides for us to be more efficient. This helped us to be finished quicker, so we had even more extra time to practice our presentation with our notecards. Also, there weren’t a lot of words in the PPT so we could look at the audience more than staring at the PPT, that helped us make better eye contact.

What did not work?

Something that didn’t work was how it was a little challenging to work with a partner since we both wanted to do the Logo Meaning part where we explained the logo and why we added the things we did. However, I think it would have been even harder if we had to work on them by ourselves because it would be too hard to finish all that work by myself without any help.

Why are the collaboration and communication skills you practiced in this unit important for your future?

Collaboration and communication skills are important for my future because I need these skills in order to be successful in the future with my job. Every job requires you to communicate and collaborate with others. If you are very smart and have a lot of skills, but you cannot present, then all of that is wasted.
