Unit 4 Dystopian Fiction Reflection

What did I learn about Dystopian Fiction?

I learned that Dystopian Fiction is divided into eight parts, at the first of this unit I didn’t know anything about Dystopian Fiction and I don’t even know what’s does this word mean. However, now I know what Dystopian Fiction contains and what’s the difference from each different parts like Illusion of Utopia, Dehumanization, and Social Control.

How does Dystopian Fiction invite me to think about real life?

In the book The Giver, the Illusion of Utopia is well presented in it, it shows that their world doesn’t have pain, but they also doesn’t have loss, love, and warfare. In real life, Disney is like the Illusion of Utopia for the kids, because they think that everything in Disney is magical and all the things that they enjoyed in Disney makes them think that they wouldn’t want to go and they would want stay there for ever and they could experience what does the “princess and knight” feels.

I mostly enjoys The Giver because at first Lois Lowry gave us many hints about what there world is like and also making us expecting the Ceremony of Twelve, but after the Ceremony of Twelve we noticed that only pale eyes gets to receive the memories so he wanted to give all the memories to everyone in their community. Then, the most interesting part that I think is when Jonas knows his dad releases child, so he planned a escaping with Gabriel, but the part that I don’t like is that Lois Lowry didn’t tell us what happens at last so I have to guess it, however I still want to know the last part if Jonas and Gabriel is dead or not.

How have I improved my ability to write academic paragraphs?

I didn’t know that there is a specific way to write an academic paragraph before, so I will just write like a normal story and not getting point of writing these stories. Now, I know the difference with an academic paragraph and a normal story, and I can use the structure to write a good academic paragraph.

How am I better now interacting with others with Literature Discussions?

At first, I thought it is just a discussion that is very boring, but now I know that Literature Discussion helps us to learn the ideas of each other and knowing the parts that we are not sure, also we get to validate each other when we appreciate their thinking.

Blue Light = Less Sleep=Sleepy

What safety behaviours do you think are most important for you?

For me, the most important safety behaviors are getting 9-10 hours of sleep each night, looking both ways before crossing any street, wearing a helmet every time I ride my bike, not touching sharp tools or hot stoves alone, washing my hands a lot before I eat, keeping my backpack straps tight so I don’t trip, and letting an adult or teacher know right away if something feels off or dangerous.

Who are your five trusted people you can go to if you feel something isn’t right either online or in person?

The Five trusted person is my dad, mom, sister, and my two best friend. My sister acts like my friend when I need help and I will ask my sister and my best friends first, then i will ask my dad and mom because they can give me advice then tell me what can I do, so that makes me feel that they are trusted and because of them I can be confident telling them these things.

How does Social Media and Technology impact teens the most in your opinion?

Too much use can cut into their sleep or time for physical activities, which affects their daily energy and health and it can also harm friendships because everyone is looking at their technologies, so that nobody plays with the ones that doesn’t have phones and they will feel left out and it will harm their friendship just because of using technology. They might encounter harmful things: things like online bullying, false information, or pressure to match “perfect” online images can stress them out.

What strategies can you use to help protect yourself in everyday life – online and in real life

ONLINE: I keep my personal information like address, phone number private and only sharing it with trusted people or platforms. I use strong, unique passwords for different accounts and turn on two-factor authentication when possible. I avoid clicking suspicious links or downloading unknown files, and I double-check the credibility of messages before engaging.

REAL LIFE: I stay aware of my surroundings—like avoiding isolated areas at night and keeping my belongings secure (e.g., zipping bags, not leaving items unattended). I follow safety rules for daily activities like wearing a helmet when biking, using crosswalks for streets, and listening to instructions in public spaces. I trust my instincts: if a situation feels unsafe, I leave immediately and reach out to someone for help like a nearby adult or emergency services.

What would be the biggest takeaway (learning) you have?

My biggest takeaway is like staying proactive and mindful about safety and both online and offline—isn’t just about avoiding harm.

Orchestra Reflection

DAY1: What was challenging about forming the groups?

At first, me, Miranda, and Anna already decided that we are going to be together, but Nicole wats to be with us and we agreed because we only have violin but not any other instrument so we chose to be with her and because she is viola.

What was challenging about choosing music?

We have different ideas of choosing the music and we also have to find a piece that only has violin and viola.

What are anticipated challenges for this music?

We all want to have a chance to perform in front of the class and we need to combine violin and viola together since we have three violins and one viola. Anna, Miranda, and me have to play more quiet, otherwise they won’t hear the viola. Their’s also solo, so we are a bit nervous if we can play good enough or not.

DAY2: What did you accomplish today?

We played a part of Havana for most of the time today, but we realized that our song didn’t have the viola part so we quitted and finding another music.

What was challenging about playing together?

Everyone has different tones and we are the first time playing this song, so we are not that familiar with it. Also, we find out that the viola part is incorrect, so it is challenging for us to find a music in two days.

After we finishing finding the music, then we want to play together and see if we can do it well and put it together.

DAY3: How was your performance in the previous class?

Not bad, but we still have to improve on our collaboration skill because we didn’t really play together and some of us are playing louder and some of us are playing quieter. I really appreciate our work for this piece because we all did a really hard job on practicing this song at home and also at school. So overall, I think our group did a really good job.

What feedback did you acquire?

They said that our group had stomps between the notes and also our group was very in tone and also they told us that we have to play together and we can use a metronome. So we tried making beats from the leader and let our beats played together.

Are you ready for your performance on Monday?

Even though i think our group is ready, but we still have to practice more to not make any mistake. Although the song is really short, we still can make some mistake sometimes, so we said to each other that we still have to practice at home and on the weekend.

DAY4: How did your performance go today? Were you prepared?

Our performance went nearly perfect but our group went too nervous so we didn’t do that perfect as we had thought of. However, most of the part are as expected as we wanted. Most of us in our group are prepared, only one of us didn’t prepare, but I still we did a good job together and this is a really good collaboration with them the first time, but we still made a little mistake in the beating part and playing together.

If you were not prepared, what would’ve helped you become prepared?

If our group realizes that we didn’t practice that much and we aren’t prepared, then we will use our breather and lunch time to practice and be prepared for this performance. Also, we will talk about the parts that we need to improve and the main part of the song where we need to improve.

Do you feel the feedback from peers was helpful? Why or why not?

The feedback that our peers gave us worked really well on us because some of the parts, we couldn’t realize where we went wrong and where we didn’t play together, and their feedback helped us realize the mistakes that we had, and that made us having enough time to practice to fix our mistake.

How did you grow and how do you know?

I grew the way that I knew being nervous in a performance is a normal feeling and everyone has it. Every performance helps me gain more ability to be confident, although I am afraid if I will make mistake in the performance and thinking that I don’t have enough collaboration with them, but I realize that being nervous is a normal feeling and everyone has it.

Unit 2 Otzi Unit Portfolio Reflection

What did I work on?

During this unit, ‘Why should we care about the past? I worked on making observations, inferences and wonderings. Using photos and articles as evidence, writing a CER paragraph, asking and answering open and closed questions, taking part in the Otzi Mock Trial, my role was defense lawyer 3

What did I learn? Why should we care about the past?

We should care about the past because we can learn how Neolithic women and men lived. They were very resourceful, hunting for food, created cloth, tools, medicine from nature. Started to grow crops. Same as us; Conflict; diseases. Very innovated+resourceful.

                What worked well?

I am proud of the following work, like writing a C.E.R., taking part in the mock trial, and opening+closing statement.

I am proud of the work above because this is the first time I wrote a C.E.R. and learned using quotation marks to represent the evidence. Being a defence lawyer and participate in the mock trial is really fun, collecting evidence using the resources. Also, I learned what is the difference with opening and closing statement.

                    What did not work well?

I found some of this work challenging, analyzing images, control the court, and expert witness knowledge.

I found the work above challenging because it’s hard to find the little details in the images and find out the story behind it. Controlling the court is also a challenge for me because many people talk with their friends under the court. Expert Witness is challenging because they don’t know what question they need to answer, and they have to think if the question is their expertise.

                            Personal Relevance

Collaboration and communications skills are important in my future because if I want to be a lawyer in the future, this helps me very much in presenting in front of the classes and collecting evidence.

This is a photo of my work about my own C.E.R. paragraph

                                Egg Car Reflection

                                What did I do?

Me and my partner together built a car that has safety system which can deliver the egg safely down the ramp.

                                What did I learn?

Newton’s 3rd Law appeared with the airbag, the egg car rolled down and hit the brick (action), then the egg hits the airbag (reaction) to make it safe. Newton’s 1st Law appeared with the crumple zone, the crumple zone protected the egg to make it not crack. Also the crumple zone can make less force hurting to the egg.

                                What worked?

Our car didn’t crash the egg both time which means it worked well. The speed of the car didn’t affect the egg to make it carsh.

                                What did not work?

The crumple zone could be too heavy and the egg car tilts and then slide down. The paper could have touched the wheels and made it slid down.

                                Personal Relevance

If we don’t build the crumple zones, seat belt, airbag etc. the people in the car can be hurt very much. All the things is inserted can make the car really safe.

                                Design Technology Reflection

In the 3D modeling, I first followed tutorials to learn how to use basic tools like shapes and alignment. Then I got into group and choosing our own theme and design chess pieces, turning my idea into a real 3D model by printing it. I also did creative earrings for my client is a fun unit. First, I make sure to really listen to what each client wants and their favorite colors, styles, or even small details they love. Then I get to craft the earrings by Inkscape, picking details that match their vision. Finally, I add the perfect paint or finish to bring their idea to life. In Robotics, I don’t have much interest because I have an ASA that is Robotics. I already knew all process and how to play it.

                                Balloon Car Reflection

                                What did I do?

We did building a balloon car with our parters and the Criteria is that building a car powered only by a balloon that can travel the farthest distance in straight line. The materials that we used are cardboard, straws, metal pin (axle), 4 wheels, balloon, tape, hot glue, and rubber band. The balloon car shows Newton’s 3rd Law which is Action-Reaction.

                                What did I learn?

I learned that if an object is pushed, the object will keep on moving but if any force pushes back the car will move by the other side or slows down. Newton’s 3rd Law applied in the balloon car where the air goes out from the balloon ( Action )and makes the wheel move ( Reaction ).

                                What worked?

The car building worked really well, in the building part Daisy, Yuan Yuan, and I worked well on collaboration. We talked about how big the base should be and where we should put the wheels. We also talked about how to stick the straw on the car.

                                What did not work?

The parts that didn’t work on us is sticking the straw on the car. The tape seems to be not sticky we tried many times and we finally find a way to stick it which is sticking it like a X. Another part that is hard for us is the wheel, when we are testing the wheel kept on moving left and makes the distance shorter.

                                Personal Relevance

I see Newton’s 3rd Law in real life when the car worked the same as the balloon car. The energy. that gives from the engine make the car moves.

                                French Reflection

What did you choose to research and why did you pick this country?

Besides France the best place is Luxembourg that I would choose because this place is beautiful and have many things that other country don’t have.

What is the feedback the teacher gave you?

This is a great presentation Scarlett ! It looks great and you found accurate facts about Luxembourg. You could have research how to say Fish / sweet peas and potatoes in French. One page of your presentation is in english. Next time please double check (the one about the national day ) Spelling Capitale (add a E_)

What are you proud of? What are the area of improvments?

Although I did really well on the research but I still have to work my timing because I nearly late for this presentation.

Explain what is hard (or a bit hard) to you and why?

The pronunciation is hard for me because I’m not yet that familiar with the pronuncing so I can practice on that more.

Explain how was your pronunciation the first days of school and how it’s now. Did you improve ?

I did improve on my pronuncing and at first I dn’t even know how to say it but know I’m more confident on the pronunciation than before.

                                Orchestra Reflection

                                Area for Growth

I can work more on poses and bow hold

                                What have we learned

we have learned many musical elemets and playing techniques. We have played many pieces, my favorite piece BURST!

                                Creative Writing Reflection

                                What are we doing?

Writing a fictional story that based on theme that matters for me.

                                What are we learning?

Theme (my purpose for writing this story, my message to readers)

Character Development (creating believable characters with positive & negative traits)

Plot (the sequence of events in my story; Western and Eastern approaches to storytelling)

Setting (the world that I create for my story)

                                What’s working?

I really enjoyed my planning and my favorite sentence is “I can’t handle this anymore, letting her do the learnings is as difficult as climbing up to the sky.”

                                Area for growth

I could write more planning because four pages of writing is the first time I tried it and I thought it would be enough but actually the last page is what I think immediately.

                                Personal Relevance

Even though good grades are really attractive but it can also be something that is hurtful to you. So what think is that your feeling is the most important thing, that is what I learned in the creative writing unit.
