Write a summary of what steps you went through to complete the entire documentary.

  1. I decided a topic with my partner (Cuban Missile Crisis).
  2. We each researched 3 articles about our topic.
  3. We printed the articles and annotated them.
  4. We transferred the information on our articles to a graphic organizer online.
  5. We sifted through our 2 graphic organizers to narrow down to only the information needed for writing.
  6. We collaborated on the script on our topic, which had to inform about the various impacts of the event.
  7. We recorded our voices reading the script.
  8. We created our documentary video.

One thing I did well in my Documentary.

I believe my group did well in writing the script/essay for our documentary. We successfully described the chronological events of the Cuban Missile Crisis as well as its short and long term impacts on the world. I think we did well in using highly academic language as well as deep analysis and reasoning.

One thing I still need to learn to do or would do differently.

In the process of making the documentary video, I feel like we could have produced higher quality graphics and used more effects.

ELA Unit 5 Abuse of Power/End of Year Reflection

In the last unit of the year, we did research about a specific abuse of power in recent times. I chose the 2024 money laundering scandal of United States vs. Samuel Bankman-Fried (SBF). In this act of embezzlement, SBF misappropriated mote that $8 billion of customer funds between his companies. In my research, I realized that to tell the unbiased version of a conspiracy, I have to assess all the different perspectives regarding the subject of my research. For example, there is of course the point of view that SBF is a crook and that the decision of his 25-year prison sentence was well-founded and the sentence was even too light; however, the other side of the story was that SBF was a philanthropist and a believer in effective altruism (benefitting the greater humanity by making the most money).

For my Pecha-Kucha Presentation, I had to prepare PPT slides that specifically matched each section of my abuse of power, and express the information only with graphics. It was challenging for me to have my presentation within the designated 5 minutes, as I found it difficult to express the information concisely. I had to spend a lot of time shortening my presentation from the original 7.75 minutes to the final 4.5 minute version. In the future, I have to better plan out my script so I won’t have to stress over which parts to omit.

Since the beginning of the school year, I have learned to better analyze different texts using CERs. I have also learned to write dystopian fiction, participate in Socratic seminars, and present in Pecha-Kucha format.

One book I would recommend it To Kill a Mockingbird, a bildungsroman that masterfully explores themes of empathy, morality, and racial injustice. One book that was difficult was The Lord of the Rings, because it had too much linguistics and mythology.

Math Unit 5 Probability/End of Year Reflection

Essential Question: How can we use probability to make predictions and informed decisions?

We use probability to make predictions and decisions by quantifying the likelihood of different outcomes. Probability quantifies the odds of certain events, making it easier to compare and decide between varying options. It replaces guesswork into measurable calculations that allow clarity and certainty in decision-making.

Looking at your Unit 5 Summative, what are your relative strengths or areas of improvement?

In the Unit 5 summative, my main issue is not reading and therefore comprehending the question fully, which results in varying degrees of mistakes. I need to read the questions and given values in order to make my calculations accordingly. I must also ask the teacher if there are any ambiguous problems in the test so as not to misinterpret the question and get it wrong.

If you could share something with your Grade 8 Math Teacher, what would it be?

I enjoy studying deeper into mathematical concepts in contrast to only going over how a certain theorem works or the easiest or most simple form of a problem; I like to explore the rigorous proofs and solve complex problems based on simple concepts. I also prefer paper tests rather to projects as I believe that the tests can better gauge my understanding of the math, whereas some projects don’t involve a lot of math and have a lot of art.

What advice would you give to incoming Grade 7 students?

Science Unit 4: Matter and Energy Cycling in Ecosystems

Part 1: Essential Question and Standard Reflection

From my learning of ecosystems and the cycling of matter and energy through biotic and abiotic factors in them, it can be deduced that the surface color of Pleasant Pond took on a green hue due to the excess runoff of nitrogen and phosphorus-rich fertilizer into the pond. Nitrate and Phosphate-abundant fertilizer boost crop yields, but farmers often use extra amounts for redundancy. Therefore, the fertilizer that the plants are unable to assimilate is brought into the pond ecosystem through means such as surface runoff, streamflow, and groundwater discharge. These excess nutrients are absorbed by algae, which the reproduce rapidly, ultimately forming Harmful Agal Blooms that sometimes stretch across the entire body of water. The HAB the blocks the sunlight for all the underwater organisms. The plants will not be able to perform photosynthesis, as it requires sunlight as an input source. Photosynthesis of the algae will spike during the day, but when night falls, the biomass grown by photosynthesis and the carbon cycle eventually dies. The amount of decomposers is not enough to support the breaking down of all the algae, which results in eutrophication of the ponds and therefore the disruption of the biogeochemical cycles.

In our ecosystem in a bottle variable change project, my partner and I decided to influence the carbon-oxygen cycle by breathing into the bottle. We predicted that with the excess amount of CO2, the plants would benefit from it as there would be more input for photosynthesis, but then the oxygen levels would decrease, leading to the organisms unable to perform cellular respiration. Our prediction did not come true, as that amount of extra carbon-dioxide might not have had a large impact on the plants and photosynthesis. However, this conclusion might also not be precise, as the animals all died over the weekend after the variable change due to lack of food.

Part 2: Improvement

I would try to improve my reading of the Summative rubric in future projects, as I did not sufficiently show the connection between the 4 cycles and photosynthesis. I need to read the Exceeding requirements more carefully next time. This will allow me to fulfill the rubric completely.

Math Unit 4: Problem Solving (Algebra and Geometry)

U: What do you understand in this unit?
I understand how to solve equations and inequalities. I also understand how to calculate area, perimeter, surface area, and volume in 2D and 3D shapes.


N: What new information did you learn in this unit?
I learned about the Reuleaux triangle through my Summative Project.


I: What was interesting in this unit?
The mathematical properties of the Reuleaux Triangle are interesting.


T: What was tricky for you in this unit?
It took a long time for me to plan my project, as there were not a lot of equivalent relationships about my project.


Essential Question: How can we use prior knowledge to connect ideas and solve unfamiliar problems?

In math, we can use older knowledge to derive newer ways to solve problems by connecting related concepts.

SLC Reflection

How did the SLC go?

The SLC went well and I think I was able to communicate my progress and ideas clearly. However, I was going too fast and finished the PPT in 10 minutes.

Key Takeaways

I learned as a student that I should improve on my collaboration in class and also my participation in encores. I should also improve on my CER writing and do better in formative CERs.

Application for This Year

I learned about what mistakes I have made this Semester and I could apply them into similar scenarios in the future.

Plans for Next Year

Next school year, I plan to be more successful in my encore grades and finally reach my goal of 20 Exceedings. I also wish to improve on my CERs.

Science Unit 3: Growth, Development, and Reproduction

Part 1: Essential Question and Standard Reflection

There are numerous factors that contribute to the variation of taste size, and other characteristics between different species of apples. Some genetic factors include advantageous characteristics passed down from parent to offspring plant through sexual and asexual reproduction. In sexual reproduction, the offspring’s alleles and a combination of that of the parent plants, creating genetic variation. When a plant reproduces asexually in processes such as grafting, the offspring inherits all of the parent’s traits, which may result in advantageous characteristics being passed down, which increases the likelihood of farmers selling their fruits. Environmental factors also play a role in the successful reproduction of plants. Variables such as soil fertility, climate, and animal behaviors could contribute either beneficially or adversely to reproduction.

Part 2: Hands-On Experience

Two learning practices that benefitted me the most in this unit are: 1) hands on activities such as DNA extraction; and 2) the independent research project (Franken Fruit Summative). I like to see what I learn and also adapt my pace according to the level of understanding I have achieved, so these. two activities best suit me. The DNA extraction was fun and I got to see what the DNA strands actually looked like under a microscope. For the summative assessment, I got to extend my learning by researching topics that were outside of class, such as germination and external fertilization.—-

Part 3: Improvement

One thing that I will have to improve on in future learning is to include all elements of a proper model in different cases. In the new apple variety project (see directly above), I had to be reminded to add consideration of scale to my model. In terms of aesthetics, I need to remember to make sure the labels don’t overlap over each other.

Social Studies Unit 3: Visual Presentation

For the visual presentation of our Historical Person Speech, we made a short video on iMovie to complement our vocal delivery. We had to include videos and photos of our historical figure and sync it to the sentences in our speech.

I think I did a good job of using a variety of images and clips and I timed them well. The pictures mirrored exactly what I was saying.

One detail I could improve upon is to make my video longer, as my speech was a little rushed to keep up with the speed of the video. I could make each frame longer or add more graphics.

Social Studies Unit 3: Essay 

In this unit, we researched about the impact of a historical person and wrote an essay about their life experiences and later impact. The historical figure I chose was Willie O’Ree, the first Black NHL player.

To write the essay, we first researched the person and annotated 3 articles. Then, we transferred the annotated information onto a graphic organizer. Finally, we wrote the essay in CER and cause-effect format.

I think I did really well on my essay, which got all 4s in my report card. I think I did well in describing O’Ree’s early-life experiences as well as his long term impacts on racism in hockey.

I need to improve on the step of transferring annotated information onto my research graphic organizer. A lot of information was repeated throughout my 3 articles. In the documentary unit, I hope to finish my research quickly and get varied information from my sources.

PE Unit 6: Dragon Dance

In preparation of the Chinese New Year Assembly, the seventh grade performance was the dragon dance, a traditional Chinese dance, which uses a long, flexible, multi-person puppet.

I think our group did well in this unit and we were able to master all of the moves quickly. We collaborated well with each other and minimized arguments.

One thing we should improve on is our timing, because are moves are usually out of sync with the other dragons.
