PE Unit 5: Badminton

In our badminton unit, we worked on forehand and backhand serves, net shots, forehand clear, and forehand attack. We mostly played games in doubles and practiced in groups of three.

I think I improved on my net shot and clears, so I always make my opponent run suicide across the court (see: Junchen :P). I still need to work on the accuracy and power of my smashes, as they get returned more often than I would like.

TTG Progress Reflection

TTG Chosen: Effective Collaborator

Goal: Work better with my classmates and use their feedback and information to improve my work.

Subject 1: Language Arts

I have made improvement on last semester by being more attentive to my classmates and be more accepting of their responses. I need to keep working on giving more sophisticated peer feedback and also listening to my classmates’ feedback.

Subject 2: Social Studies

I have improved by better dividing work among my project partner and myself to maximize work efficiency. In the future, I would like to contribute more positive information in discussions such as Socratic Seminars.

Vision Board/SMART Goal

Goal 1: Improve my grades and get at least 20 Exceedings in the S1 Report Card

Goal Progress: I currently have mostly. exceedings for my Schoology grades. However, I don’t think my grades are high enough to achieve 20 Exceedings in the report card, as still more than half of my grades are Meetings.

Challenges: One challenge I faced throughout the semester was that I rarely received 4s in active learner, which is a substantial chunk of report card. This caused a dramatic decrease of the total amount of 4s in my grade book. Another problem was that I had all 3s in my Social Studies grade, which is a result I am not satisfied with.

New Insights: I found that doing well on active learner and my less proficient subjects would have a positive impact on my grade report.

Accomplishments: One accomplishment that I am proud of in S1 were my grades for ELA, math, and science. I had all 4s for all the ELA summatives, and I pretty much had full marks on both math and science. This is definitely something I want to keep up going into S2.

Revised Goal: I will choose not to revise this goal, as I have not fully achieved it in S1 and will continue working on it in future semesters.

Support System: I received a lot of help and guidance during semester 1 from my teachers, as they were patient enough to explain what I needed to do better.

Next Steps: For semester 2, I will aim to improve my grades on my more lacking subjects and standards and hopefully achieve 20 Exceedings.

Goal 2: Increase Shot Power and Zone Entry in Ice Hockey

Goal Progress: So far, I have greatly improved my snapshot and my close-ranger wrist flick. I have learned the Matthews/Bedard toe-drag release, which has made my shot more deceptive. The wrist flick has helped me score consistently in games. As for zone play, I have improved my mobility along the boards as center.

Challenges: Some issues I faced were that I do not have a lot of arm or wrist power, so I deviated from the standard snapshot to the toe-drag release, which is more energy-efficient but slightly reduces the power. I had trouble protecting the puck along the boards as well.

New Insights: I have found the success of the toe-drag release, and the fact that the two best snipers in the NHL are using it further warrants this method.

Accomplishments: I took my shot to a next level and made it work in games.

Revised Goal: My goal will now be revised as “Quicker pass release in offensive zone and stronger backcheck”.

Support System: I have received a lot of help from my parents and coaches.

Next Steps: In the future I will work on having a quicker pass release in offensive zone and stronger backcheck.

Social Studies Unit 2: Visual Presentation

As part of the presentation of the project on transportation and communication technology, we had to do a physical presentation. For my presentation on the impacts of airplanes, I made a 3D cardboard model of a commercial airplane. I choose this presentation form because the audience could more clearly see the changes that occurred to the aircraft and would provide a better visual aid.

One thing that I did well on my presentation was that I got a lot of information across concisely, but I should keep working on having eye contact with various parts of the audience instead of just staring at one spot.

Social Studies Unit 2: Essay

In Unit 3 Transportation and Communication Technologies, we had to write an essay detailing the positive and negative impacts of a certain form of transportation or communication technology. For my project, I selected commercial planes. The first step of writing was to gather articles and different sources. Then, we printed out the articles, annotated them, and transferred the information onto a digital graphic organizer. Next, we wrote our 3 body paragraphs – positive impacts, negative impacts, and how the negatives were fixed (or not fixed) – and gave it to the teacher for feedback. When our drafts were returned, we edited the information and wrote our introductions and conclusions.

One thing that I did well on my essay was that I had good claims and evidences in my body paragraphs. However, I still have to work on elaborating more in my reasoning.

Unit 2 Cells and Human Body Systems Reflection

Part 1: Essential Question and Standard Reflection

The essential question I chose to answer for the final project of this unit was “How do our body systems work together when we play our favorite sport?”. The sport I chose was ice hockey. I used my learning about how cells and body systems to explain the specific cells and systems that worked together during ice hockey and to write my CER. I could also describe the structure of the cells and organelles better using what I learned in this unit. This further proves that the human body is a system composed of smaller subsystems because the organelles form cells, tissues, and finally organs to serve the final purpose of the activity, in this case, ice hockey. Each working part of the body is made up of smaller parts that support its function.

Part 2: Learning Experiences

The two learning experiences that helped the most in this unit were the pig lung/pig heart/bullfrog dissections and the final independent research blind box project. I like to see exactly what I’m learning, so the dissections helped me see how the organ systems were arranged and interconnected. The final project gave me the opportunity to research about a topic I am interested in.

Part 3: Improvements

If I had to improve one thing in this unit, I would work more on my CER writing. My reasoning sometimes repeats my evidence and claim. I also spent a long time on the CER, so next time I would like to finish is quicker.

Math Unit 3: Proportionality and Percentages

U: What do you understand in this unit?
I understood how to calculate percent change.

N: What new information did you learn in this unit?
I learned the tip is normally added to the original bill without tax

I: What was interesting in this unit?
Seeing how the price fluctuated based on multiple percent changes.

T: What was tricky for you in this unit?
The vocabulary of price changes such as markup and commission.

Health Unit 3 DECIDE Model

The DECIDE model can be used to make difficult decisions. It analyzes the situation and provides a useful and systematic method to deal with hard choices.
D: Define the Problem
E: Explore Your Options
C: Consider the Consequences
I: Identify Your Values
D: Decide What to Do
E: Evaluate Your Decision.

In this unit I learned about the negative impacts of different types of drugs and substances. For example, smoking and vaping both involve large amounts of nicotine and chemicals, and vaping can be potentially more dangerous and addictive than smoking. I also learned about multiple other types of substances, such as nicotine pouches.

Math Unit 2: Proportionality and Scale Drawings

U: What do you understand in this unit?
I understand how to calculate the scale factor of 2D shapes.

N: What new information did you learn in this unit?
In this unit I learned that the scale factor is calculated with the formula sf=copy/original.

I: What was interesting in this unit?
It was interesting proving the area scale factor is the square of the 1D scale factor.

T: What was tricky for you in this unit?
It was hard to keep track of units when computing the scale factor.

PE Unit 3: Outdoor Invasion Games (Soccer)

In our soccer unit, we learned skills such as dribbling, passing, and shooting. I think the unit was interesting and I improved my passing. I scored goals in the games, too. However, I need to improve on getting shots on goal from all angles, as sometimes I have to adjust for a long time to get into a comfortable position to shoot.
