Unit 4 Dystopian Fiction Reflection

What did I learn about Dystopian Fiction?

I learned that Dystopian Fiction had 7 main types of Control, Conformity, Social Control, Totalitarianism, Constant Surveillance, Dehumanization, Control of Nature, and Illusion of Utopia. Conformity, is where everyone is the same, and differences are suspicious and feared. Social Control, is where people in society pressures peers and others to conform. Totalitarianism is where the government controls everything in society through fear, in the giver society, the elders. Constant Surveillance, is that you are watched at all times, and you have no privacy. Dehumanization, it where people have less or even no human rights. Control of Nature, is where nature is feared for its unknown, and the society has very advanced technology. Illusion of Utopia, is where it may look like a perfect society, but it is actually very messed up.

How does Dystopian Fiction invite me to think about real life?

Dystopian fiction makes me think about real life because sometimes something in the giver society might seem messed up and really dehumanized but when you think about the good side of it it might reveal some of the flaws we have in real life and it invites us to think about it more deeply.

I enjoyed The Giver

Because The Giver had a lot of twists and reading it was very exciting and also it had a lot of surprises. For example, when it was revealed that “release” is actually murdering people was very shocking and it was surprising.

How have I improved my ability to write Academic Paragraphs?

During the Dystopian Fiction unit, through the Common Lit assignments I improved on my ability to write academic paragraphs. First, now I can use the academic paragraph structure well to fit my writing. Second, I can now write a proper topic sentence that is short and has a main idea. I can also write a proper conclusion, with a conclusion sentence starter that can paraphrase the topic sentence.

How am I better now interacting with others in Literature Discussions?

I now know how to validate others before speaking, and also paraphrasing their point. I also improved on bringing ideas to the table, and building on to other’s ideas to make the discussion more interesting

PE SOCCER REFLECTION

What did we learn?

How to shoot, pass and dribble.

What worked?

I was good at every skill and I could pass dribble and shoot.

What did I enjoy?

I enjoyed the games and it was really fun

What can I do to improve?

Communicate better with my teammates.

Unit 2 Otzi Unit Portfolio Reflection

  1. What did I work on?
  1. During this unit, ‘Why should we care about the past?’, I worked on
  1. Making observations, inferences and wonderings
  1. Using photos and articles as evidence
  1. Writing a CER paragraph
  1. Asking and answering open and closed questions
  1. Taking part in the Otzi Mock Trial, my role was expert witness
  1. What did I learn? Why should we care about the past?

We can learn how Neolithic people lived, they were resourceful, hunting for food, created clothes, tools, and medicine from nature. Started to grow crops. They were same as us also because they also had conflicts and diseases. They were very innovative and resourceful

  1. What worked well?
  1. I am proud of the following work my CER paragraph, my note cards, and my visual aid.
  1. I am proud of the work above because my paragraph was well written and my note cards and visual aid were useful, and I was well prepared.
  1. What did not work well?
  1. I found some of this work challenging, presenting to an audience, writing a CER paragraph, and extracting evidence from articles.
  1. I found the work above challenging because I don’t present to an audience very often and I get nervous. It is my first time writing a CER paragraph, and I had a hard time extracting evidence from articles because there weren’t very many articles.
  1. Personal Relevance
  1. Collaboration and communications skills are important in my future because it can help me in my jobs and also working with other people because communication skills are important for working efficiently and collaboration skills can help me work with different people.
  1. This is a photo of my work about the CER paragraph

Math Unit 3 Reflection

What did we do?

We made a bake sale and we calculated all the ingredients. We baked the goods ourselves, which was chocolate filled donuts. On the bake sale we coordinated with our teammates to sell our baked goods to people with fake money as currency.

What did we learn?

We learned how to calculate units and rates. In day 1 we looked for the recipe and the ingredient. In day 2 we converted the measurements. In day 3 we calculated the unit prices and the batch prices. And on day 4 we determined the cost and the sale price.

What worked?

Our collaboration was really well and we also sold out all our donuts. We also worked well on the days we did the booklet because we were working together and it wasn’t just one person doing everything.

What did not work?

We could’ve improved on working more efficiently, because we were pretty rushed sometimes. We also could’ve cooked earlier to make the donuts yummier and look better.

Personal relevance

This project was really fun for me because it wasn’t any old math test that was kind of stressful but it was learning in a fun way. It also helped me learn more collaboration skills and I enjoyed it really much.

Egg Car Reflection

What did I do?

Our egg car had to go down a ramp with an egg in it and when it hit the concrete block the egg couldn’t crack.

What did I learn?

There is 2 Newton’s laws seen in the challenge. One of them is Newton’s 1st law, which is inertia, it is shown when the car hits the wall and stops, but the egg is still flung forward because of inertia. There is also Newton’s 3rd law and it is shown when the egg car crashes into the wall.

What worked?

The crumple zone was not so rigid and it protected the egg. Also There was a “seatbelt” at the end protecting the egg from getting flung out the car.

What did not work?

The car slid down the ramp and we got disqualified. Also we could’ve made the container that holds the egg straight so there is no risk of the egg getting flung out

Personal Relevance.

I now know that crumple zones are very important to keep the passenger safe. Also it can’t be too rigid or else the car would still crash and do a lot of damage. I also learned that seatbelts are a very important part of car safety and if you don’t put it on you might get severely injured.

Science Balloon Car

What did I do?

I learned about Newton’s 2nd law using the balloon cars. We built the balloon cars using some axles and wheels a big foil plate, some straws, and a balloon. The focus was to see who’s balloon car could go farther and how far it could go with how many weights on it.

What did I learn?

I learned about Newton’s three laws, including the law of acceleration, the law of inertia, and the law of equal and opposite reactions. Newton’s 2nd law applies to the car because the more mass we put on it, the shorter it goes and with no weights on, it goes the farthest. Newton’s 1st law of inertia happens when even the balloon is out of air the car still goes forward because of momentum. Newton’s 3rd law happens when the balloon pushes air towards the back the car goes forward because of an opposite reaction.

What worked?

My collaboration with my partner worked well because we listened to each other’s ideas and we made changes. I also could understand everything in class well. Building the balloon car was also good because we worked together and finished it very efficiently.

What did not work?

We kind of struggled on problem solving on the balloon car because we made the balloon more in front to stop it from creating friction with the wheels but it drooped on the floor creating even more friction. We also kind of struggled on data collection because sometimes people would accidentally kick our car, step on it, and we kind of have to fix it again. I was also struggling to make the balloon car go straight because sometimes it drifts off the road and under the table.

Personal relevance

This can help me understand the laws of physics, and basics of it. Knowing this can help me in life so I know how to problem solve better. Building the car can also improve my skillful communicator and critical thinker skills.

Unit 1 Winter Concert Portfolio

What we worked on

In orchestra we learned a lot of things such as posture, new songs, playing techniques, and fun games.

What’s working

I’m good at playing the songs and I can also identify musical elements and playing techniques.

What’s not working

I still need to improve my posture and make sure both my feet are on the ground.

This is a correct bow hold.

Personal relevance

This can help me so I have more talents and also it will help my resume for university and college.

Health Unit 1 Puberty Reflection

It is important to learn about puberty so you don’t freak out and everything is normal

I feel the most confident about my height change because its good for me.

I feel concerned about my voice change because I’m used to my voice.

I can look if it’s cited and if the website is known

I want to pay more attention and behave better in class.

Creative Writing Reflection

What are we doing

Writing a fictional story based on a theme that matters to me.

What are we learning?

Theme(my purpose for writing this story, my message to readers)

Character Development(creating believable characters with positive and negative traits)

Plot(the sequence of events in my story eastern and western approaches to story telling)

What’s working?

I enjoyed writing and describing the scenes in the story and to make them more realistic, and I’m proud of the scene where they are under the oak tree because I showed character emotions well. I got the idea from the story because there is bias in the world right now and many adults think their kids can’t be friends with someone who’s weak or slightly less smart. In Luminara, magic made rivers sing, flowers bloom, and fireflies glow. But that day, the village learned something deeper: magic was a gift, yes, but kindness made you gentle, creativity helped you see beauty, and loyalty made you brave. I like this line because it sounds very peaceful.

Areas for Growth

The story elements I struggled on was making the conflict. I overcame it when I thought of a bully and it was a pretty good idea. My least favorite part was also the conflict because it wasn’t really smooth.

Personal Relevance

This can help me in future days and it can help me when I’m writing other fictional things.
