What happens inside our bodies when we get sick?
I chose to research about sickness in this unit, and I chose the sickness Leukemia, a type of cancer. My claim to my CER and my answer to this question is: when a person has leukemia, the immune system, skeletal system, and sometimes the nervous system gets affected, when a hematopoietic cell’s DNA mutates in a bad way inside the nucleus, and the cell starts to multiply uncontrollably, which floods the bone marrow with leukemia cells instead of healthy cells, limiting the amount of healthy cells in your body and oxygen in your body. While I was researching this, it was helpful knowing about the the different parts of the cells and what each body system does, which we learned in science class, since I needed to research on what organelles and body systems does leukemia affect. By knowing this information, I was able to figure out what systems and organelles were being affected. This relates to the idea of how the body is made of subsystems that are made of cells because leukemia develops as a mutated cell and starts to affect the subsystems in the body, like the immune system and skeletal system, which affects the whole body. When Leukemia develops, it clogs the skeletal system with itself, making the skeletal system unable to develop healthy cells to support the immune system, which affects your whole body’s health.
Impactful learning experiences:
Throughout this semester, I was able to learn through activities, like from dissections and the final modeling projects. I like doing things hands on and these can both have creativity in them and we can also learn a lot by doing this.
Improvements:
I think I did pretty well this semester but if I wanted to imrpove I could by trying to reach exeedings. Most of my CERs are meetings but I feel like if I try to be a little more efficient in writing, I could reach 4s. I could do this by connecting what we’ve learned into real life.
