Badminton Unit Reflection

In this unit, we practiced badminton, and specifically trajectory (where you place the shot; drop or long) and speed (fast or slow) with the correct hand placement.

During our badminton unit, I learned how important it is to control where the shuttlecock goes, not just how hard I can hit it. I got pretty good at hitting high, deep clears from the back of the court to push my opponent back and give myself time. I also feel confident keeping up the speed during fast rallies. The hardest part for me was the drop shot. My drops often didn’t fall steeply enough over the net, so they were too easy for my opponent to reach.

To get better, I really need to work on changing the trajectory and speed of my shots on purpose. Right now, I use a lot of the same powerful swing. I have to practice using a softer touch and a shorter swing to make my drop shots more effective. My goal is to get better at mixing up my high, fast clears with slow, sneaky drops to keep my opponent guessing.

Visual Presentation

After writing the essay, we had to make a visual presentation to go with it. Here’s my process: I decided that I was going to design something like a choose your own adventure. At first, I made a presentation on canva, with hyperlinks that leads to each page where your adventure leads you. However, I was done 3 days before the deadline. I knew that I couldn’t sit around and do nothing. Therefore, I decided to make a gimkit because we were playing that a lot in class. Since I have never made one before, I had to do some research. The end result was really cool, with buttons you could press that teleports to other places. I am really happy that I chose to make this.

I think I did well on the creative part. As far as I know, there has never been a person who made a gimkit in the history of this project; so that was something new that no one knew before. I also combined both a fun game with education, which was cool.

One thing I can improve is the variety of choices. My choose your own adventure had 3 character you could be, 1 possible question, and 2 answers for that. If I had a bit more time, I would definitely make more questions or characters. Overall, it was really successful.

Social Studies Unit 2: Essay

This was my essay on the topic How does technology have an impact on society? for unit 2. This unit was mainly about research on transportation and communication. This essay mainly contains 5 parts: the introduction, the positive impacts, the negative impacts, how the problems were fixed and the conclusion. For this, we used the research graphic organizer to take notes from 3 different credible resources. After that, we wrote a CERER (claim evidence reasoning evidence reasoning) using those notes into 3 different paragraphs according to the information. Lastly, we wrote the introduction and conclusion.

One thing I did good on my essay was the framing of evidence. In this unit, I learned how to frame my evidence to keep it as concise and to the point as possible. For example, I wouldn’t just put the whole quote into the evidence, instead, I would quote key words and phrases. This really helped my evidence be extremely clear.

On the other hand, I still need to improve my conclusion writing since I was relying too much on the given sentence structure while I should’ve had edited a bit more and created my own bit.

Me as a Collaborator

I think I would rate myself a MEETING for collaboration, not exceeding, not approaching, but meeting. I stay on task most of the time, participate and listen most of the time. I think that another student would describe my collaboration with one word as “Participate” since I participate a lot. I will try to improve my listening so that I hear other people’s ideas.

Unit 2 Learning From Imagined Worlds Reflection

How do you think your summative compared to your formative?

CERER- My CERER was really good in the formative. However, my summative was worse. I got a 2.5 for both evidence and reasoning since it assumes some things that aren’t there.

Pitch Presentation-We didn’t have a formative for this, but I think that I did wonderful on the presentation since I memorized everything and came up with a hook different from everyone else

Outline-For this, we also didn’t have a formative. However, I think I did ok on the summative since I analyzed the round and dynamic pretty well.

What are you proud of and what were some challenges?

CERER-I am most proud of my convention writing since that is where I am most confident in. The reasoning writing was really challenging though, because I had a hard time trying to connect it back to the claim.

Pitch Presentation-I am really proud of the fact that I memorized my script since usually I would basically “read” my script completely. However, I could be a bit more enthusiastic.

Outline-I am proud of how I came up with a whole entire story. I would never write or even plan a story from scratch. On the other hand, I can improve my time management since that took quite a while for me to finish.

Set one goal for the future:

For the CERER, I would like to practice every now and then with the chatbot. For my presentation, I want to do a few more presentation, practicing more and more to become more confident. Lastly, I want to plan my time wisely to avoid rush.

Unit 2: Cells and Human Body Systems

Part 1 Essential Question and Standard Reflection

My essential question is: What happens inside our bodies when we get sick? I learned about how the human body system works together in order to perform a specific function to answer this question. When you get sick, the battle starts super small—like a virus taking over one of your cells to make more of itself. This tiny attack alerts your immune system’s “soldiers,” such as macrophages and T-cells, which talk to each other to plan a defense. Your whole body joins the fight: your blood carries immune cells around, your lymph system works like a filter to catch germs, and your nervous system might even turn up your temperature (cause a fever) to help out. So, being sick—and getting better—is really your body’s systems all communicating and working together to fight off the invader.

Part 2 Learning Experiences

The analogies were really helpful since they could help us visualize stuff. The group work was really helpful as well since we could understand and learn from other people. The best thing for me was the dissections; we could learn from real things.

Part 3 Improvements

I could improve on CER writing. This is because sometimes I can’t really connect my reasoning back to my claim or evidence. I can improve by writing more and asking for help.

Unit 3: Proportionality and Percentages Reflection

U: What do you understand in this unit?

In this unit, we learnt how to solve percentages (finding the percent, whole or part), tips (tip rate, tip amount with provided meal total), tax (tax rate, finding the tax with provided meal total) and the simple interest (interest and total).

N: What new information did you learn in this unit?

I learned about how tip and tax works. For example, you have to tip before tax and you don’t tax your tip. The most important thing is…GIVE TIPS :).

I: What was interesting in this unit?

The final project was really interesting because we could see how percentages and the concepts learnt are applied into our daily lives. For example, while eating, we need to calculate the tip and tax and the total of our meal. I usually don’t really use math as much in the real world as I do on worksheets, so this was a first.

T: What was tricky for you in this unit?

The calculations part was the trickiest. I’m not that accurate when it comes to calculating percentages and/or decimals because of the small numbers. However, I can improve by doing more of these problems without relying on a calculator.

DECIDE model: The Life Changer

What is the DECIDE model?

The DECIDE model is a six-step model for effective decision-making, especially within healthcare. For example, you can use this to decide things like whether or not to take a medication with side effects.

How can it be helpful?

  1. The DECIDE model promotes efficiency in terms of deciding for an important event
  2. It helps the outcome of a problem become more positive.
  3. Increases accountability
  4. Helps people think through whether or not something is actually right, even under peer pressure

What did you learn about the effects of different substances?

I learned how harmful substances are. For example, vaping can cause harm to all of your body, and can cause more than 5 types of cancer. Another example would be how nicotine causes things like mouth cancer, which is really harmful. Not only does these substances not help deal with stress, it causes more and can lead to depression and anxiety.

Unit 2: RC cars, electronics and 3D modeling

What did you do?

In this unit, we assembled remote control cars and remodeled a part of the car or remote control using onshape.

Strengths:

I think I did well on designing and measuring the controller. I did a lot of measurements, leading to a really successful controller that fit on the first time. I got inspired by the playstation controllers and their controllers all looked somewhat cool for me. So, that was my design.

Weakness:

I didn’t have great time management, causing me to not get a higher grade because I didn’t take a photo of my finished RC car and submit it to Schoology on time. Next time, I will try to finish everything quickly so I can submit everything on time.

Unit 1: The Clock!

What are we doing?

In this unit, we learned about how to laser cut with Inkscape to make a working clock for a client.

Strengths:

I was clean and neat about gluing the CDs on the clock and making sure the clock was still working while trying new material. I also tried to write in detail for my process journal.

Improvements made throughout the unit:

I learned how to spray paint and how to assemble a clock. Spray painting was easy, but you also had to hold the spray can in an angle, which was harder.

Weaknesses:

I could be a bit more creative with the shapes and other functions on Inkscape, making my design a bit more complicated. I could also do a little something with the numbers on the clock, for example, make numbers with number like science objects.
