Math Unit 2 Reflection and Semester Check-In

Part 1: Unit 2 Topic A and B Test Reflection (Functions & Statistics)

A. Evidence of Best Thinking from U2 Test

  • I chose Question 5 as evidence of my best thinking, because it contains multiple parts (a, b, and c) that show my understanding of scatter plots and residual plots, by identifying elements of the line of fit, drawing the line of best fit, and describing a residual plot.
  • I chose Question 2 as another piece of evidence of my best thinking because it shows my understading of functions, tables, equations, and graphs, by matching an equation to a representation listed.

B. Skills Reflection

Throughout Unit 2, I improved the most at using formulas to solve questions related to geometry. One skill from this unit that I still need to work on is identifying all parts and elements of functions and creating myself. The biggest challenge for me on this assessment was the critical thinking part, because I didn’t make enough inference. One strategy that helped me on this test was reviewing before the test, so that I can make sure I didn’t forget any concepts or formulas.

          Part 2: Goal Reflection & End-of-Semester Check-In

          A. Looking Back at My Last Goal

Last unit, the goal that I set was: In the next unit, I want to do better at critical thinking. Some challenges that might get in the way while I’m reaching this goal is procrastination and time management. If I get stuck or need help, I can reach out to my teachers or try to figure it out myself by looking into Schoology.

How well did you work toward this goal?
          ☐ Very well ☐ Somewhat☐ I struggled with this

          • What helped you make progress toward this goal? I learned to manage my time better, and there has been a lot less procrasination for me recently, which gives me more time to review for tests and do homework.
          • What got in the way of this goal (if anything)? I think not reading questions carefully and paying attention to details became a challenge for working toward my goal. Looking back on my tests, a lot of mistakes I made were because of careless errors and lack of attention to details.

          B. End-of-Semester Self Reflection

          • Three strengths I have shown last semester:
          1. Understanding of different graphs and formulas
          2. Improvement on time management
          3. Use evidence and reasoning to justify answers
          • Three areas I still want to improve:
          1. Precise mathematical language in explanations
          2. Extend understanding through reasoning, solving unknowns, and constructing a geometric argument
          3. Critical thinking

          C. New Academic Goal Moving Forward

In the next unit I want to be more careful with details in questions, and use more precise mathematical language to explain. Something that might get in the way of this goal is when the question looks familiar, I tend do use the exact same way to solve it, but sometimes it’s actually slightly different, and it could be easy to make small mistakes. If I get stuck or need help, I would either reflect and try to get back on track myself, or reach out to other people.

Designing a Story Problem (Math Piecewise Function Project)

My story is about Doctor Khalil’s migration journey from a war-torn country to the United States. He had to go through many economic challenges rebuilding his career and life. The piecewise function focused on the changes of his balance ($) over the time he moved to the United States.

I am most proud of the explanation of the financial impact of the depression and the description of intervals to show how slope represents changes in income and expenses throughout the timeline.

The hardest part of creating the piecewise function was trying to make the explanations consistent, and making sure the equations or mathematical expressions align with what we wrote, but there were still some mistakes.

If I could revise one part of this project, I would want to improve on is to be more accurate for the calculations of the slopes and equations, because some of them were tricky and we made some calculation errors.

This project helped me deepen my understanding of the equations and slopes about piecewise functions. I learned about the effectiveness of different forms of equations when modeling problems and how to use graphs to solve real life situations.

Unit 3: Identity and Healthy Relationships

For this unit’s project, we chose to do a presentation on The Summer I Turned Pretty. We analyzed the relationships between the three main characters and discussed the red flags, green flags, and specific scenes. At the end, we talked about how effective communication, honesty and clear boundaries are crucial to a healthy relationship.

The most important idea I learned this unit is about consent. Giving consent is important, and other people should respect your boundaries in order to make a healthy and respectful relationship. The person should be in their right mind and a safe, equal environment in order to give an enthusiastic “yes”, or else it wouldn’t be considered as a proper consent. This builds understanding between the person giving consent and asking.

Health Unit 2: Reflection on Learning

In this unit, we learned about different mental health issues, like depression, OCD, anxiety, PTSD, etc. My thinking changed a lot during this unit.

For example, I used to think that OCD is just when someone is overly obsessed about getting things neat and organized, but after listening to my classmates’ presentation, I learned that it’s more about having the urge to do some specific ritual repeatedly, and it could cause great emotional damages to a person’s life.

The reason why my thinking changed is because I learned that a lot of mental illnesses are often being stigmatised by social media, films, etc., creating false assumptions, stereotypes, and misconceptions, leading to discrimination or misunderstandings.

French Reflection: La Guerre des Jumeaux (Oral)

I read a short novel about La Guerre des Jumeaux. I think the vocab was not too difficult to understand, though there was a lot of new words for me. I practiced the vocabulary with Quizlet, and I usually just memorize the vocabulary by looking at the flashcards on Quizlet. After reading the novel and doing a few practices, I had to retell the story using several pictures . I wrote some key vocabs and phrases to prepare for this oral.

I think I did better than I thought I would, I reused many new words learned from reading the book, and I am able to use them in context. I tried to conjugate some verbs in past tense, too. One funny mistake was that I said Charlie leche la main de Otto when it was actually Otto leche la main de Charlie.

One thing I am proud of is reusing many new words learned from reading the book, and being able to use them in context. One area for improvement would be to work on pronouncing verbs with -ent. Sometimes, I still pronounce the -ent out loud, but it should actually be silent.

          PE U1 Table Tennis Reflection

I think I did well on serving and forehand, because I feel like it’s very similar to Tennis. Something I could improve on is adding more spin for the backhand, maybe I can practice more rally to improve.

Science Semester 1 Active Learner Reflection

          My Goals

One goal for this year is to participate more actively in class. In 7th grade, I believe I did well in terms of preparation and completing assignments, but I still need to engage more during discussions or other class activities. Moving forward in 8th grade, I will work on collaborating more effectively in group projects, contributing more to discussions, and responding to questions more often. Another goal is to
demonstrate positive attitude in class and be more aware of self as a learner. Moving forward, I will be more focused in class, and always answer when a question is asked.

Progress I made towards my goals

I tried to contribute more to discussions in groups and with my elbow partners. Most of the time I give my best reasonable effort on discussions and assignments. I also tried to always follow instructions carefully and demonstrate a more positive attitude.

I tried to contribute more to discussions in groups and with my elbow partners, such as sharing thoughts and offering. Most of the time, I give my best reasonable effort in discussions and assignments. I also tried to always follow instructions carefully and demonstrate a more positive attitude in class.

What are you most proud of in this class so far?

I am most proud of my improvement on understanding new concepts and vocabs.

What has been your biggest challenge in this class?

Consistently demonstrating a positive attitude has been my biggest challenge, so I create the goal to work on this.

How have you demonstrated the qualities of an Active Learner — preparing effectively, participating fully, collaborating well, staying positive, and reflecting to improve? Are there any areas where you want to grow or improve next quarter?

I came to class prepared with prepared materials and finished assignments. I worked on collaborating well with my peers and staying positive in class. I also reflected on my learning as an active learner to see places for improvement.

Comment from PTC: Participate more in class and bring more positive attitude.

          Social Studies Unit 1 Reflection

In Unit 1 Inquiry Into Interest, I made a poster about China’s geography and collectivism. My inquiry question was, “How have China’s geographical features contributed to its collectivist cultural values throughout Chinese history?” My thesis, which was also my answer to the question was, “The Central Plains’ natural barriers and water management challenges fostered agricultural and hydraulic needs that made collective organization essential for survival. Confucianism transformed these geographic necessities into a comprehensive cultural system that prioritized group harmony over individual interests.

          Reflection Area Prompt My Response
Overall Learning What was the most important thing I learned during this project? The most important thing I learned was that geography is a fundamental factor for China’s collectivist culture; however, it was not the sole factor. Other things like politics, people, or the choices that society made were essential to collectivism.
Challenges & Persistence What was the hardest part of this process, and how did I work through it? The hardest part of the process was finding enough information of the geography of the Central Plains, because most of the websites and sources are about the general geography of China, not a lot of them were talking about specifically the Central Plains’ geography.
Growth in Thinking How did my ideas or perspective change as I researched and developed my inquiry? I thought geography directly shaped Chian’s collectivist culture at the start, and that’s why I asked this inquiry question. But after researching, I think Confucianism and the needs that geography had impacts on were more important to leading to collectivism.
Best Evidence What piece of research or evidence do I feel was most powerful in answering my question, and why? I think the flood control and water management of the early Chinese society is the strongest evidence in answering my question, because it shows how the constructions and hydraulic projects required organization of massive labor forces.
Use of Flint AI How did Flint AI help me (e.g., brainstorming, paraphrasing, organizing)?  What decisions or thinking were still up to me? Flint AI helped me by checking my sources and claims for me and alsoorganizing ideas into a clearer structure。
Use of Flint AI Provide 5 screenshots to show evidence of use during the overall process.
Active Learner Habits Where did I show persistence, preparation, and effective use of class time?  Where could I improve? I showed persistence, preparation, and effective use of class time by completing the research and CERs mostly in class and on time.  I could improve by doing better on time management and stop procrastinating.
Final Product In what ways did my final product effectively communicate my thinking? What would I change or improve if I had more time? It effectively communicated my thinking by showing thesis staement, evidence, and reasoning, and also organizing them into a structure that is easy to understand. If I had more time, I would add more images to myposter.
Personal Growth What new skills or insights did I gain (about myself, about learning, about the world)? How might these connect to future projects or passions? I learned that I am interested in Chinese culture, and I could connect this with future projects by doing related topics.
