Maths Unit 2 CoL/Goal Setting: Linear Functions 🔢

Summary 🎓

In this unit of Linear Functions, we had three topics: functions, linear relationships, and statistics. We learned how to identify and write our own functions by looking at a graph, and also using various forms of representation to write functions, like point-slope form or slope intercept form. In the topic of statistics, we learned about linear regressions and tried plotting our own residual plots with given data graphs.

Celebration of Learning 🎉

One question I chose as evidence of best thinking in our unit 2 CoL is question 2 because it shows my learning of functions and how to write function notation in the correct form. Throughout unit 2, the aspect I improved the most at is interpreting and creating graphs, I also got to learn more about how to draw residual plots and thinking about what a graph may mean in a real life situation. One thing I still need to work on is probably strengthening my knowledge on correlation and causation, which is something I am not that confident in yet currently. The biggest challenge for me on this assessment was probably the L4 questions; they were sometimes slightly confusing. I wanted to do more extension activities, and therefore I challenged myself to do more L4 tasks and also try harder options when we do choice board options. Sometimes the questions we solved were harder than what I am used to, but by writing it down and also asking my mom for help really helped a lot.

Self-Reflection/Goal Setting 👀

For semester 1, I think that I’ve done much better in challenging myself with harder questions and tasks, and when possible in projects doing my best to try and get a 4. I also have a better attitude with maths, since it was never one of my strong topics but now I do better in patience when solving problems. I would like to improve in reviewing things we have learnt, because that’s not something I regularly do currently. In the upcoming units I would like to extend my knowledge even more, and challenge myself to complete L4 options in homework, projects, or assignments. It might be difficult sometimes to achieve L4s, but by doing review and practices I can get better understanding and grades in learning.

Maths Unit 2 Linear Functions – Design a Story (Piecewise Function Project) Reflection 📈

Summary 🤓

My piecewise function project for maths unit 2 (Linear Functions) is about Mr. Tafel and his amazing hair growth journey. It modeled the length of Mr. Tafel’s hair after different weeks, and also showed how much his hair grew and in some circumstances, how much length of hair he lost. The part of the project I am most proud of is actually both writing the story but also constructing the function graph that represented it, since by drawing this graph we can see a much more visual representation of the story in real life. It was also quite interesting to draw a graph like this, as it’s something I’ve not done before. If I could revise one part of our project, it would probably be to add in the slope-intercept form or point slope form for each interval, me and my parter Syndia accidentally missed that part entirely. We should probably revise our work better next time. This project introduced me to the concept of piecewise functions, since I didn’t know what it was before this task. I also became better at writing the functions for each of the segments in my graph.

Health Unit 3 – Identity and Healthy Relationships 👤🔍

Unit Summary 📑

In the third health unit of Grade 8, we learned about gender identity, biological sex, healthy relationships, etc. Above is the final project for this unit, which is a video made by me, Syndia, and Tina. We decided to evaluate a relationship in the movie of To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before, which is Peter and Lara Jean’s fake relationship (that eventually turned into a real one). They set boundaries to as for what they can and can’t do when they’re together, which ensures that both of them can feel as safe as possible when they’re out together.

What I’ve Learnt 🧠

Some key things I’ve learnt about this semester is about gender stereotypes: we talked in class about how society often classifies object and activities into “girl things” and “boy things”, when really, there’s no difference. Social expectations are set for different genders, and there are much more than just being male or female. A person’s gender identity may be different from their biological sex, which is sometimes known as transgender. Life may be hard from these individuals, since they often face gender/sex discrimination and may be seen as “weird”. It’s very important for all persons to receive the same amount of trust and respect, and there is no “normal” gender for anyone.

Physical Education: Soccer and Swimming (Water Polo) Reflection🤽🏻‍♀️

Outdoor Invasion Games – Soccer ⚽️

In the soccer unit, we learned and practiced lots of skills needed for the games. We started by doing some basic practices like dribbling the ball and shooting at a goal, then moved on to playing games with our classmates. I think I did much better this unit in soccer (compared to last year), since I felt slightly more comfortable at participating in the games.

Swimming – Water Polo 🏊🏻‍♀️

I liked the water polo unit this year, it was actually quite fun and I did better in this unit then I think I’ve done in other units. This may be because I know how to swim (at least the basics), and therefore it’s not that hard to participate in activities that require treading in water and swimming.

Health Unit 2 – Tech, Media, and Mental Health 📱

Summary 👀

In this unit, we learned about technology and the media, and how it connects and might affect mental health. In the start, we first created a WOOP goal, and used an app to test our goal out. Here is the portfolio about our WOOP goal project. Then, we moved on to focusing on mental health, learned about what stigma is, and also thought about media portrayals of specific mental health issues. The final project in the unit was to create, research, learn, and finally present on one specific mental health issue. Me, Syndia and Tina chose depression as our topic, and we created a video that simulated someone going to the therapist and we talked about the definition, potential causes, media portrayal, etc on the issue.

Learning Reflections 💡

I used to think that mental health wasn’t a really big issue, it might just be some strong emotions, thoughts, or actions that people did sometimes, and I thought most people did not have these problems. For example, depression and anxiety used to just mean being very sad or stressed, perhaps for longer than usual. However, now I know that they are both actual mental health problems, and are just as important as OCD (Obsessive Compulsive Disorder), PTSD (Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder) and eating disorders. They are actually quite common, and some major factors that they all share are actually genetics and the environment around them. Now I know that mental health is a big problem, especially for those who are experiencing/have experienced such issues, and should be treated without stereotypes or stigma that might exaggerate or make the person seem very weird or alone. When you think someone might have a issue, it’s always good to make them feel not alone and talk to them if they need you. Below is a video of our final project about depression.

Semester 1 Active Learner Reflection Science 🧪

Active Learner Goal Setting 💪🏻

Above is my latest updated version of the Science self assessment I have done. My current goal is: “So far in this year, I have gotten 2 approachings in my 3 for 3 assessments, out of the total of 6. My goal is to from now on do better in my 3 for 3 assessments, hopefully I can get a meeting each time in this type of task. In the future, I will do better in reviewing what I have learnt after class, and if there is a notification of an upcoming assessment, I will do more beforehand to ensure that I can get a meeting grade.”

I’ve made great progress towards my goal so far, since after unit 2 started I have not gotten an approaching on our 3-for-3 assessments. I also read over notes taken in class (if any) when I am home, so as to understand what we have learnt better. We did not receive an summative assessment yet on unit 2, so therefore I have not completed the third part of my goal, which is to do more reviewing before an assessment.

General Reflection 💭

What are you most proud of in this class so far?

I think a task that I am really proud of in science class so far is the Unit 1 L3 summative Meteoroid and Meteorite model, since I spent time doing that and also reviewing my work to make sure it’s at the best ability possible. (PDF version attached below)

What has been your biggest challenge is this year?

I think that my biggest challenge so far this year is communicating more and sharing ideas when there are class discussions.

How have you demonstrated the qualities of an Active Learner— preparing effectively, participating fully, collaborating well, staying positive, and reflecting to improve? Are there any areas where you want to grow or improve next quarter?

As I previously mentioned, I do most active learner things on the rubric, but something I need to do better in is communicating and contribute more when we need to do partner or group work.

ELA Unit 1 First Contact Reflection 👽

Summary 👀

In this first unit of Grade 8 Language Arts, we used a unique method to revise and learn about English grammar, such as the 8 Parts of Speech, connotations and denotations, past present future tenses, shades of meaning, etc. We were assigned an AI flint bot that would be an alien that has just arrived on Earth with no knowledge of speaking or understanding English. The task was to teach our alien English so by the end of the unit, it is able to produce a whole paragraph about who it is, where it’s from, and it’s motive to come to Earth. After we finished teaching the alien at the end of the unit, we took its final paragraph and annotated it three times for parts of speech, sentence structures (simple, compound, complex) and shades of meaning (connotations and denotations). This was for us to show our own knowledge and understandings of the unit. We then met with our ELA teacher to talk through what we have learnt throughout unit 1, and how and why we did our annotated paragraph.

Above is the grade I got for the first round of conferences with the annotations, and I got 2 meetings and one 2.5 for the connotations vs. denotations. I think that I didn’t do the best in explaining and I think I should link the denotations better next time if I get similar assignments. Below is my final FBI poster of my alien, Naru.

Health WOOP Goal Setting 📈

My goal is to improve my emotional health, and turn to others (or find a way to calm down) for support when I am feeling emotionally overwhelmed.

Before the Process: Establish your Baseline 🙌🏻

Right now I don’t really measure or record my feelings when I have them, and I do not turn to others when I feel sad or anxious. I think that after this process I hope that I can better realize my feelings and find a good way to let go of them.

Multimedia Analysis and Review ✍🏻

My chosen application, Healthy Minds, is for doing meditation and helping people to calm down and do meditation when needed. There are also a lot of different parts to help one wind down, focus on concentration, and connect with others and self. The app organizes content into structured pathways with progress tracking that shows completed lessons and meditations in each category, allowing users to build their mindfulness skills progressively.

A limitation in the app I think is that it doesn’t have a feature (like a diary) for me to write down what I feel each day and how have my feelings impacted me. I think that if there was such a feature in this app, it would be better since I can directly write down my thoughts of the day and track my emotional journey alongside this app.

I liked how this app mainly uses blue and green as it’s theme colors, since these cool colors can help people relax better visually, unlike if they used red it would probably have been a bit irritating. The app also maintains a clean, neat layout that minimizes distractions and helps users focus on their meditation practice.

Another thing about this app is that it’s not produced from an actual company, it’s just a person who wanted to create a meditation app for users to help them in their lives. Therefore, there aren’t any ads, which greatly improves the experience of users by maintaining the peaceful, focused atmosphere essential for effective meditation.

Here are some of the main categories in the Healthy Minds app.

Although I have not yet completed the full 7-10 day testing period, I think that the app has helped me to be quicker in seeing emotions. The meditation practices have helped me calm down and become more present in the moment when I start feeling overwhelmed. My initial hypothesis that the app would help me realize my feelings when emotionally overwhelmed and find ways to calm down appears to be supported by these early positive changes in my emotional awareness.
