Designing a Story Problem(Piecewise Function Project)

Our story was about 2 brothers investing money in a company and recording their gains and loses. It is similar to real life where there is risk of loosing money when investing in a company. One part of the project I am most proud is accurately drawing a graph that follows the story accurately. The hardest part of the project was when we had to calculate every slope and it was hard to not make a small mistake. If I could revise one part of the project, it would be the neatness of our work when showing each slope calculation. The project helped me understand piecewise function better by applying to a possible real life situation and creating a creative story based on that.

Unit 2: Robotics

Michael.Bai.8C2.SpeedChallenge.v1

During this unit, we did 3 challenges with the robot such as the speed challenge, wall racer and stacking challenge. For the first challenge, we had to build a good gear ratio on the robot in order to make the robot go fast and our objective was to make the robot go as fast as it can around the classroom and we would time it. Our results turned out pretty good and we got 20.13 seconds which was 2nd in the whole class. For the second challenge wall racer we had to construct a code where the robot goes to the wall and turns back. However, we failed that challenge as our robot crashed directly onto the wall. For the last challenge, we had to make a clawbot which makes the robot pick up and stack blocks as many as it can. We were able to stack 1 block in the allowed time. We had to document all of our changes and evaluate our success for each of the challenges and make a process journal upon that.

Unit 1: The Box

Michael.Bai.8C2.thebox.v1

During the unit, we were asked to design a functional tissue box with a specific design movement given by the teacher and my design movement was memphis style. At the same time, we had to document our process every class where we jot down what we worked on that class. We also had to make a process journal where we evaluate our success, learn from out peers and overall document our tissue box process. Lastly, we had to use inkscape to make our tissue box. After we finished designing our tissue box, we laser cut and we stuck the pieces together to make our ultimate tissue box. Through this tissue box I learned to persevere through challenges and learn through our mistakes.

Unit 3: Identity and Healthy Relationships

For the end of unit project, we were expected to analyze a real life relationship from a movie scene. And we had to conclude whether it is a healthy or unhealthy relationship. We had to analyze whether or not there were gender stereotypes or like whether or not the relationship gives consent.

The 3 most important ideas I learned was a healthy relationship contains healthy elements such as trust, giving consent, respect personal boundaries and give each other space.

PE Swimming Unit Reflection

In the swimming unit, we practiced swimming different strokes, safety tips such as treading water and elementary backstroke, and we played water polo.

During water polo, we learned how to accurately pass to our teammates and receive the ball and shoot. It was pretty tiring to play water polo since you had to tread water nonstop. I actively participated in class by listening to the teacher when they were speaking and actively engaging in the water polo game.

Language Arts Socratic Reflection

I chose this artifact because it shows my speaking time and times compared to the average of my class. The times spoken time shows that I was actively participating in the socratic seminar and I built on to others ideas. The time spoken part shows that my speaking time is not too bad, but I could have spoken longer by sharing deeper thinking during the socratic seminar.

Math Unit 1 Reflection

I chose question 1 as evidence of my best thinking because it shows multiple standards that was required for us to be able to demonstrate. For example, in this question I demonstrated a series of translation and rotation, which is some of the essential skills learned during this unit.

I chose question 6 as evidence of my best thinking because it is also one of the essential skills. It requires me to be able to write a CER to prove whether 2 triangles are congruent are not. I used skills learned in class to name the different types of angles in triangles such as ASA (Angle, Side Angle), AAS(Angle, Angle, Side) and SAS(Side, Angle, Side). Then we had to write statements of whether the triangles are congruent or not.

Throughout the unit, I improved most at being able to perform dilations. I didn’t know how to do dilations at the start of the unit but after the unit, I am able to fluently perform the skill. I fell like I still need to work on identifying angle relationships since I think I am not very fluent in that.

Three strength of mine up to now are being able to ask clarifying questions, finishing all of the required work on time and with quality, and making up if I made any mistakes or something similar.

Three things I want to improve on next unit are being able to challenge the L4 questions at the COL, being able to go beyond what is expected, and do all of my homework on time with high accuracy.

In the next unit, I want to challenge the L4 questions at the COL. Something that might get in the way of this goal is not finishing the homework, which may lead to not understanding lessons. If I get stuck, I will find the teacher and ask for help

Unit 2 Health Reflection

How thinking changed:

During this unit, we learned about mental health. Before, I thought that mental health was just something that is wrong with your brain that causes you to think differently than others. I thought it was going to affect how you think.

After this unit, I learned that mental health is also as important as physical health where something might be wrong with your thinking. If you have mental health problems, it is not only going to affect how you think, but it could also make it harder to complete everyday tasks such as difficulty thinking.

For example, for depression. First I thought that is was just a small illness that will make people feel sad. But after watching the presentation I learned that it could give people constant sadness and cause low energy throughout the day. This is important as it may lead to struggle to listen in class.

Surprising thing:

One thing that surprised me most in the unit was the presentation about anxiety. I thought that people are constantly worried about things. But after learning about it, I learned that it is the natural response to pressure and it will make us feel afraid. Anxiety does not only affect our mind.

This learning might help me be more serious when coming up to talk about these mental illnesses and show respect to the people that actually are experiencing the tragedy.

L3-Prendre rendez vous / take appointment

During this oral assessment, we had to meet with the teacher and modify a conversation. We had to make a conversation to take an appointment. We are the patient and the teacher is the doctor.

One feedback I got was to speak without filler words and speak with confidence.
