Dystopian Fiction-The Giver

What did I do?

I learned about dystopian fiction by writing academic paragraph and discussing topics collaboratively related to the book. The Giver.

What did I learn?

In class, we built vocabulary, wrote academic paragraphs using transition words and had collaborative discussions.

What worked?

Something that work really well in this unit is the summary. I wrote more than 5 sentences and also, I wrote about the book, not going out of the topics. I was able to connect the topic to other topics when I wrote the summary. Another thing was the vocabulary words. I learned them with the magic school AI that the teacher provided for us. I studied them and reviewed them oftenly. I practiced writing sentences with the vocabulary words before the test.

What didn’t work?

Something that didn’t work for me during this unit is the commonlit assignments. I did my best at them, but I only got a three or a two and sometimes a four. Another thing in this unit that didn’t work for me is the discussions. I did the motes really well, but I just kept reading off of the notes and not adding on the discussion oftenly.

Personal Relevance

This unit was really helpful in writing summaries, writing academic paragraphs, and studying vocabulary words about the book. I think the commonlit assignments, the daily summary that we wrote during the past few weeks, and the magic school AI were the most helpful. It will help me in the future because I can talk to different people using advanced vocabulary words that I studied before.

VolleyBall

What did I learn?

I learned how to bump, set and serve with an underhand throw. I learned how to recieve a volleyball when my partner bump/set/serve the ball to me.

What did I do?

I played volley ball and some games against other teams. I passed it to my partners and I also bumped, set, and seved to my partener.

What am I proud of?

I am proud of me improving my bumps and serving and passing well to my partners.

What do I have to improve on?

I still need to improve on my set and I need to be less scared of the ball.

Personal Relevance

I think this unit was pretty okay and I think the most fun activity was passing the ball around with my partner.

Unit II – Ötzi Unit Reflection

What did I work on?

In this unit, I worked on my observations, inferences, and wonderings. I watched a video about archaeology and wrote down my observations, inferences, and wonderings. I worked on my CER paragraphs, and I also worked on answering and making closed questions.

What did I learn?

I learned that observations are what you observe with your 5 senses, looking, touching, tasting, hearing, and smelling. Inferences are what you think or decide about your observations. Wonderings are questions that are used to help you make or prove inferences.

We also learned about writing CERs, which is claim, evidence, and reasoning. CERs are paragraphs that state your claim (one sentence) and the evidence about the claim which is found normally in a source like an article and news, and your reasonings about the evidence and your claim. Another skill that I learned in this unit is answering and making open-ended questions and closed-ended questions. Open-ended questions are questions that need specific and long answers and usually start with words like why, where, what, when and how, for example, if you had a million dollars, what would you buy and why? This is an example of an open-ended question. A closed-ended question is a yes or no question and mostly starts with words like do, may, would, is/are and does. For example, “Is this an apple” is an example of a closed-ended question.

What worked?

What really worked for me in this unit was writing reasonings for the CER paragraph because I was able to come up with reasons that relate to my evidence and prove my claim to be true and to make people believe that my claim is right. Another thing that worked for me in this unit is that I was good at observing stuff and making inferences based on my observations from the videos and podcasts that we listened to in class. I observed different things and came up with different theories about my observations.

What didn’t work?

Some of the things that didn’t work were finding evidence from the text for my CER paragraph. It was hard to find evidence in the news articles because there was multiple repeated evidence in the news articles. Another thing that didn’t work was writing good open-ended questions. On the mock trial, most of my open-ended questions were from the AI that Ms. Ryan made, so I think I must improve writing strong open-ended questions.

Personal Relevance

I think for the whole unit, I was strong at writing CERs, and I was also good at determining open-ended and close-ended questions. Another good one was that I had good observations and inferences. I think I may need improvements in the evidence of findings and writing strong open-ended questions. I think the Mock trial was the most fun out of all lessons in this unit because we got to experience a mock trial that was normally on TV. I think that the mock trial was great, especially because our side and defense won! I hope that this amazing project and unit continues for years afterward. I learned a lot of things from this unit, and I hope to use these skills in the future!

Bake Sale Portfolio Post

What did we do?

We baked vanilla cupcakes and sold them in the Math Bake Sale. We determined the cost per one cupcake which cost ¥9.77 because one batch makes 9 cupcakes and we added all the ingredients costs together and then divided it buy 9. We also determined how much profit we wanted to make , ¥10 and added them together and then sold the cupcakes with the price of ¥20.

What did we learn?

I learned how to find the unit price per cupcake, and I also learned how to transform the unit in U.S system to the Metric system. Another important thing I learned from prepping the Bake sale, is how to use the double number lines and the table to cauculate the sell price and the mark up percentage.

What worked?

What worked is that we got fairly good profit, ¥98.29. Another thing is that we were sold out before 11:15 so that means our cupcakes tasted and looked good. The most worked out thing was that me and my partener didn’t argue and we communicated often. We decided that I can do the advertising and the explaining, while she wrote people’s names down.

What did not work?

What didn’t work is that the original sale price that we decided to sell was ¥23 and it was too expensive, so we had to change the original sale price. Also, we had alot of problem baking the cupcakes, because we had limmited time and we were kind of short of ingredients.

Personal Relevance

I think overall it was a really fun project to do, and it was really tasty too! I also think that I chose my partner well because she is my best friend and we can be serious even when there is something funny. Also, I think me and my partner communicated well and we solved problems and discused like when the cupcake’s icing was short. I think our cupcake was pretty good for a beginer, and I think this project helped me alot because we got to use different methods of finding out the unit rate, the mark up percent and the final sell price. I think it is a really good idea to continue this project on the following years!

Soccer Reflection

What did I learn?

I learned how to dribble a ball and I also learned how to shoot the soccer ball and how to cooperate with my team mates and passing the ball around to my parteners.

What worked?

I shot 8 goals during this class so I shoot really well and I also cooperated with my team mates well by passing the ball around.

What didn’t work?

I still have to improve on dribbling the ball well and also, trying to make accurate shots because sometimes when I try to shoot, I accidently shoot in the wrong direction even thought I make it most of the times.

Personal Relevance

I think I am proud of me being a part of the team and I am also happy about me shooting goals and being able to help my team mates scoring the points and helping them win.

Science Egg Car

What did I do?

I built an egg car 16.5 cm long and 6.5 cm wide and I used wheels, straw, axel, 3 A4 papers, 1 meters of masking tape and an fake egg. When building the egg car, the egg had to be visible and the wheels couldn’t have any stuff attached to it.

What did I learn?

I learned that when the egg car hits the concreat block, the block hits the car back with an equal force. This is related to Newton’s 3rd law, the law of action reaction.

I also learned that when the egg car stops, the egg wants to fly forward because of it’s Inertia. This is related to Newton’s 1st law because the egg wants to keep going like how newton’s 1st law of motion states that, an object at rest tends to stay at rest and an object at motion tends to stay at motion unless acted upon by an unbalanced force.

What worked?

Our car’s wheel didn’t fall out, and it also protected the egg really well so the egg didn’t crack while in the car. We also met the criteria of length which was 16.5cm long and 6.5 cm wide.

What did not work?

Our car did make it to the end, but it flipped in the middle and came sliding down the ramp.

Personal Relevance

I liked the egg car experiment because I liked the thrill of watching the egg car coming down the ramp and the egg either goes CRACK and break or it is a sucess. I wished it was a success but our car flipped in mid way but at least it came all the way down. One thing I didn’t really agree on this project was I wished we could choose our own parteners.

Science Balloon Car

What did I do?

In science, we built a balloon car. The balloon car was built using styrofoam base, straws big and small, rubber band, wheels and balloons. We used it to learn about Newton’s 3 laws of motion. Law of inertia, law of acceleration and law of action reaction.

What did I learn?

I learned that Newton’s 1st law states that a objet at rest will tend to stay at rest and an object at motion tends to stay at motion unless acted upon by an unbalanced force. This is used in the balloon car because when the car doesn’t move when we don’t put air in the balloon. But when put air in the balloon, the unbalanced force, the balloon car moves.

I learned that Newton’s 2nd law states that the more mass the object has, the more force is needed to accelerate the object. This is used in the balloon car because when we added the weights to the balloon car, the car needed more air to travel the same distance as the car that was empty.

I learned that Newton’s 3rd law states that every action has an equal and opposite reaction. This is used in the balloon car because when the force is applied to the balloon car, (the force is the air in the balloon) the balloon car eventually will stop because of its opposite force, friction.

What worked?

Identifiying the net force worked for me because it was mostly easy to add and subtract the numbers. Memorizing Newton’s law worked for me to because I practiced memorizing, I also read the definition over and over again. That helped me memorize the three laws.

What didn’t work?

Identifiying the connections between Inertia and the example that the teacher gave me was a little hard. I can improve this skill by trying to find Inertia in real life. For example, if an object is at rest, that is inertia. The object tends to stay at rest so it’s Inertia.

Personal Relevance

I really liked how we got to do experiments based on Newtons three laws, Law of Inertia, law of acceleration and the law of action reaction. I can use these skills to identifiy Newton’s three laws and that will help me because in tests, there might be a question saying to find a real-life example of one of the Newton’s three laws. I hope I can keep improving on my learning in science.

Proud Project

I am proud of the pintch pot because I like it’s smooth surface and the golden spots on it. I also like the dark blue background. I made it by first, I made a ordinary smooth pintch pot. Second, Then, Ms. Kiran helped me put it inside the kilem to cook it in high temperature. Thrid, I gazed it with black and purple which turned out to be gold and blue. Then, Ms. Kiran helped me put it inside the kilem to again cook it in high temperature and my pintch pot was finished.

Winter concert

My favorite piece in the winter concert is ginger bread man in the piece sweet petit winter suit. Because Ginger bread man is exciting and also I like how it sounds. I also like how it has the jingle bell melody in the Ginger bread man.

We learned how to organize the S.T.A.R.S in the music and we also learned about playing techniques and Musical elements.
