Unit 4 Dystopian Fiction Reflection

What did I learn about Dystopian Fiction?

I learned about what Dystopian Fiction is and how it can change the view of our modern world; dystopian fiction is an imaginary world where the society is being oppressively controlled in a dehumanizing way. The message of this style of writing is to usually question the methods of how our modern way of life is being managed.

How does Dystopian Fiction Encourage me to think about Real Life?

Dystopian Fiction commonly encourages one to see the inequalities of this world, and how it is managed. For example, in the Giver, we are shown to be in a “perfect world”, with no major issues. This, however, was at the cost of dehumanizing the population using conformity and social control. In our modern world, thought it would seem more inhabitable, the consequences are far more immense, such as deforestation, warfare, and destruction.

Was the Giver Enjoyable?

I enjoyed the Giver, for a vast variety of reasons. The Giver was a very suspenseful book. The author Lois Lowry would constantly delay or separate major events between chapters, making the novel exciting to read. Additionally, it had made me personally think and question, whether it was within the book or in the outside world.

How was my Ability to write Academic Paragraphs Improved?

Due to the constant usage of academic paragraphs within assignments, my ability to write one has been massively improved. More specifically, my ability to be flexible when writing a paragraph has been boosted, with myself always being able to create a new paragraph.

How have I Became better at Literature Discussions?

During this Unit, we had done quite a few Literature Discussions, through a few topics by choice. Through these, my ability to respond and adapt to others ideas has improved, therefore making me a more confident speaker in general.

Unit 2 Otzi Unit Portfolio Reflection

 What did I work on?

During this unit, ‘Why should we care about the past?’, I worked on a large variety of skills. We started the unit by making observations, inferences and wonderings on a vast amount of pictures, before using photos, videos and articles as evidence to solve the Otzi murder case. After making our decision(s), we wrote a CER paragraph to express our ideas. As time went on, we went to asking and answering open and closed questions to prepare for the trial. Finally, we took part in the Otzi Mock Trial, with my role being an expert witness; my job was to answer questions from both sides relating to the arrowhead.

What did I learn? Why should we care about the past?

We should care about the past because it can teach us many things; for example, it can teach us the state of living in the past, whether it was. Artifacts or fossils. Furthermore, it shows the connection yet contrast of Neolithic life compared to the present, highlighting the evolution from mankind. However, most importantly, it teaches us how to avoid mistakes from the past, because, as said by many, history repeats itself.

    What worked well?

I am proud of the following work : my edited CER paragraph, .the L4 Graphic Organizer, and my notes relating to the KWL. I am proud of the work above because it has given me the chance/ability to express my thoughts and ideas to the paper at a high level of formality. Moreover, it was just overall interesting to think and write about Otzi’s murder.

    What did not work well?

I found some of this work challenging, including my first CER paragraph, the L4 Graphic Organizer, and the pre-trial feedback. I found the work above challenging because it had practically forced me to think very hardly, with each answer require a decent time of thinking to answer.

    Personal Relevance

Collaboration and communications skills are important in my future because it would be difficult to progress in any job or just real life without anylevel of communication. For example, if I were to go to a job interview (where they would actively ask questions), I would have to actively use my communication skills to be able to answer accordingly.

    The Math Baking Sale

    What did I do?

I created some goods for the baking sale; my group made churros.

    Day One

We chose our dish to make and three reasons for our choice.

    Day Two

We found ingredients and the unit cost.

    Day Three

We found the cost of one batch and the sell cost.

    Day Four

we prepared for the bake sale with posters and a pitch.

    Day Five

    Bake sale!

    What did I learn?

Over the course of the preparation of the bake sale, we, as a class, learned things related to rates and unit rates:

    Day One

we used measurements (rates) to change from imperial to metric.

    Day Two

We used the previous day’s info to find the unit cost of each item.

    Day Three

We used the unit costs to find how much one batch would cost totally, before having a markup price to decide our sell cost.

    Day Four

we used the math from before to create posters to highlight our learning.

    Day Five

    Bake sale!

    What Worked?

A thing that worked out during this process was the bake sale itself. Sales were quick, with our stock running out approximately within 10 minutes. Additionally, my collaboration with my partner was rather efficient being able to pull out of tricky situations.

    What did not Work?

One notable thing that made struggles were how unorganized we were. For instance, when we were starting the sale, we could not find a way to present the churros. To solve this, we had both of us explaining our ideas one at a time, seeing if it would be effective to attract customers.

    What Personal Relevance is there?

To me personally, this project had made me very excited – baking, selling, even the math. To me, this is not only just a project to learn math, it is more of just a good memory that I would remember for quite some time.

    Egg Car Investigation

    What did I do?

I created an Egg Car that would be able to safely drive down a ramp without cracking the egg.

    What did I Learn?

I learned about the how Newton’s Laws are applied within the Egg Car Challenge. For example, when the car crashes into the concrete, the egg will continue to go forward unless acted upon by another force. The car, on the other hand, would of course hit the concrete with N force, but the concrete will push back with N force.

    What Worked?

The car’s safety mechanisms were able to prevent the egg to be met with a high amount of force, significantly reducing the impact, therefore keeping the egg safe and not cracked. Some safety systems may include a seatbelt added with a safety cell, with a crumple zone to make the force smaller.

    What did Not Work?

First and foremost, the car was not able to systematically sustain itself; the wheels would often separate, making the car inconsistent. Additionally, the car would occasionally tip over, as the center of balance is not very strong. This would further prove that the Egg Car’s inconsistency being a major issue.

    Personal Relevance

The design of cars have many things to note. If a car lacks the adequate safety systems, the car would not be remotely safe enough to be used. The implementation of a safety system which may include safety cells, airbags, and/or seatbelts are very crucial to a car’s safety. The use and explanation of Newton’s Laws have further boosted my understanding of the functions of the mechanisms.

    My Art Project Reflection

    What is it?

My proudest art project was my cardboard project. When we were discovering the material of cardboard, I did a group project with others, choosing to make a bedroom.

    Why I was Proud

Though the project may seem lackluster in terms of overall detail or completion, what truly made me proud was that I had learned to make cardboard connect to other pieces without a glue-gun. This has highlighted the true capabilities of cardboard.

    Creative Writing Reflection

Writing a fictional story based on a theme that matters to me.

Theme (my purpose for writing this story, my message to readers)

Character Development (creating believable characters with positive & negative traits)

Plot (the sequence of events in my story; Western and Eastern approaches to storytelling)

Setting (the world that I create for my story)

I enjoyed writing the plot, because of how interesting the story was, despite the difficulty of showcasing it. I also enjoyed creating the setting; the idea of creating the whole new world of magic where the inequalities are evidently shown. Parts I was proud to write were the intro, giving a decent explanation to the systems of my world, as well as how the weak will stay as the weak, and the inequalities of such.

    Areas for Growth

There were some rather tricky things to write, especially the introduction of some characters. These may include the antagonist and the side character. Additionally, the overall consistency of writing was questionable. Dealing with these problems would be difficult, with editing being very hard to do, with the need to rephrase everything.

    Personal Relevance

This unit has made me realize many things; I can use my ideas into words to highlight what I want to express. This can be applied to many things in life – essays, or just self-expre

Science – Critical Thinking and the Indi Cars

    What did I Do?

I played with Indi robot cars and Gravitrax to strengthen my critical thinking skills.

    What did I learn?

Critical Thinking is carefully analyzing a certain topic or moment, usually to solve a problem.

    What Worked?

I was able to think most critically when met with the Indi cars, where the robot car had to maneuver orderly under the specific colors. This helped me with not only succeeding the task, but also improving my critical thinking skills, making me “find the problem” before solving it.

    What did Not Work?

During the Gravitrax activity, I struggled in finding an efficient way in changing the track’s direction. This means that I would waste more materials on one action, making the contraption not be able to function most fluently.

    Personal Relevance

I believe that this helps me in my personal life towards the future; there will be moments where I will have many problems. By using my critical thinking, I can analyze the root of the problem, making how I solve more efficient and quicker. This simple benefit will make my future far easier, both in academics and in the moment.

    Fiction Reading – Character Analysis

    What are we Doing?

Reading The Lord of the Rings: the Fellowship of the Rings and determining important character traits.

    What are we Learning?

How to analyze character traits based on evidence (Character’s Actions, Words, Thoughts, And Other Characters’ Reactions)

    Where I Improved

The way I decide which trait is the most effective and most important to the story is improved, additionally how I view and try to find things that contradict each other. This has helped me develop a way to examine a person/character by what they do, such as their actions, dialogue, reactions, etc.

    Areas for Growth

The way I interpret and find valuable evidence is still lackluster, and my efficiency in finding them are not very proficient. If I could improve on this, then I would be able to quickly analyze one’s traits in an impactful manner.

    Personal Relevance

This unit has made me realize many things; I noticed that every character has many advantages, but also flaws. For example, Frodo is adventurous, yet he has a large sense of anxiety. I wondered if most people are like that too. Additionally, I feel a slight sense of connection to Frodo. I feel like I am adventurous at what I do, but I am just not able to produce at the last moments.

    My First Portfolio

    All About ME

This is my first year in not only Shanghai American School, but in Middle School. Everything feels so different. Mostly in a good way. This post is like a new beginning. It is.
This will be the start of many great things.

    My First Post

    Why?

I chose to make this “All About Me” poster for many reasons: firstly, I was able to further introduce myself to teachers and my classmates. Additionally, the increasing use of new posts rendered me to do this in the first place, being new to this.

I hope this platform can accomplish many things, in the span of these years.
